Bruce Gradkowski looks like the early favorite to be Oakland's starting quarterback in 2010. But first the Raiders have to make sure he stays on the team.

With that in mind, Oakland informed Gradkowski's agent at the combine they will place a second-round tender on the restricted free agent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

It's not a great sign for the organization when they are so confident no team will give up a second-round pick for their best quarterback. But it's also a safe bet no one will go after Gradkowski at that price, so it's a smart move.

Gradkowski will make $1.759 million for one year if he signs the deal. The team doesn't sound interested in awarding the Polish Popgun a long-term contract yet.

This is just guess, but we suspect JaMarcus Russell won't be the only legitimate competition Gradkowski faces for the job next year.

Good news IMO. Gradkowski is clearly the best QB on the team. Putting this high of a tender on him makes me believe that Al trusts him and if Russell fails he will have no problem going back to Gradkowski

So this must of been what Al and Cable discussed, they actually made some sense in their decisions. Good Bruce works hard and he deserves his shot.

Is there any team with 2 second rounders that would do this? I personally like Gradkowski but I guess it is smart not signing him to anything big yet.

I approve of how the team has handled this situation with Bruce. Giving him a three or four year contract wouldn't give him the appropriate mindset heading into camp. If you truly wish to have a fair QB competition, then arrange the 'playing field' between the two competing QBs in such a way that neither QB has any sense of security. Complacency is the last thing this organization needs from that position again, not that I believe Bruce is that kinda guy.

In my opinion, it should be Gradkowski's job to lose based on last season.
He showed more competence in a handful of games than JaMarcus has in 3 seasons.

If he can come in last season and grasp the Offense well enough to move the Offense as effectively as he did, than I say "give him the reigns to start the season this year!"
