I figure this is pretty big news with one month till draft day and two 1st round picks on the line...

No real news as to the possible reasoning behind this...

This franchise is a disaster.

The last eight years have been hard, but I wouldn't trade it for the legacy that it's built before that. Wouldn't say the franchise is a "disaster"...especially since the team went 8-8, best record since 2002, and is moving in the right direction. If we were Oakland I'd probably agree.

Yeah not a good 8 years for niners fan, jokes aside. They still have a little talent

See what happens when you say you want draft Tim Tebow?

Just kidding.

Jed York, youngest GM in waiting in the NFL, has already assumed most of the mgmt. & admin. responsibilities of the franchise. Maybe this will complete that process. Unlike other 2nd generation owners in the league he actually is getting some hands on experience in the real NFL including the draft, can't say the same for Mark Davis in Oakland or Stephen Jones in Dallas, who won't be anything more than placeholders until their fathers are 6 ft. under.

The 9ers pulled out of their downward spiral last yr. with dramatic defensive improvements (from almost dead last in points given up in 08 to 3rd vs. the rush in 09) & a whole new attitude imparted from Singletary, not bad for a team who didn't have their top draft pick signed & on the field until mid-October. With the departure of many pay me or say goodbye FA superstars in Zona, the complete rebuilding in Seattle & the joke that is the Rams under new ownership, right now the 9ers are the most stable team in the division & s/b the favorite to win it this season.

Per Peter Schaffer Scot's agent he is not stepping down.

49ers beat wrtier Matt Maiocco was on KNBR Radio earlier saying he would be, guess it might be a matter of working out a compensation package at this point, until then Scot won't resign and lose his money owed to him.

Wonder if this has to do with his unwillingness to reach for players and/or take the BPA philosophy. He comes from the Ron Wolf/Ted Thompson tree if there is such a tree. Possible there is push for an OT early or even CJ Spiller and he doesn't have more than a couple of the OT's as top 17 picks or Spiller in the top 17 either, and won't be willing to reach.

Terrible timing with the draft so close. Depressing for us 49er fans.

Since he has been working with the 49ers, our drafts as a whole haven't been worse than the Packers, Ravens or Eagles when you look closely at them.

That's a tired argument from armchair GM 49er fans who seem to think they could do better.

On that draft note, what the hell has been happening with Kentwan Balmer? His stats show 18 total tackles in 2 seasons...has he been injured, or just plain awful?

Hasn't been very good to date and has been tried at both nose and end in the 3-4 front.

Has been pretty good on the kick return team with over half a dozen returns for about 50 yards. That's REALLY good for a 315 pound man.

Seems like a good family. His brother David is Director of scouting and was nice enough to email me back regarding getting into the industry. So I wish Scot the best in whatever he does.

Haven't the 49ers hit on most of their 1st round picks the last few years? If McCloughan was the driving force behind those picks you'd think he'd stick around for this awesome 1st round group, especially with 2 picks.

Deciding on Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers is a big, big miss. Throw in giving Nate Clements the biggest defensive contract ever and a few other things and it's easy to see why people are down on him. I definitely agree that it's dumb for this to come up a month before the draft. Can't change things now.

It would help if they actually kept a OC in SF too. How many OCs and systems did they have there? Plus we don't know how good Rodgers would be if that was the case with him. He had an adv. of sitting and learning from a HOFer, perhaps too long, but in the end he proved that developing a QB like that worked.

The timing with this does not make a whole lot of sense, but it is a day that I saw coming. Most of team control has been turned over to Jed York, and I think he will do a great job. The timing of this really worries me I really want to know what Scott and management couldn't agree on. Either way if there is any success under Singletary a lot of the credit has to go to Mike Nolan and Scotty Mac for digging us out of the whole Terry Donahue put is in.

McCloughan wasn't the GM for the Smith/Rodgers decision. That one was on Nolan. I don't think he was GM for the Clements contract either, but I'm not sure on that one.

His overall Drafts, not just first rounders.... i'll only give him credit for the Gore and Goldson picks. And besides VD (just now starting to break out) and Willis, everyone you named aren't anything special... i mean C'mon, Kentwan Balmer? over Desean Jackson? then again, Chilo Rachal? over Desean Jackson? My little sister could probably draft better than this guy.

Compare them to Ted Thompson's in Green Bay, Ozzie Newsome's in Baltimore and Tom Heckert's in Philadelphia since he has been DoPP/GM which would be 2005 ?

There are on par.

And FTR 32 NFL teams that means 32 NFL general managers passed on DeSean Jackson at least once, some twice and he wasn't even the 1st player the Eagles selected in the 2nd round, Trevor Laws was. So I guess your little sister should start sending out resumes hunh ?

Chilo Rachal had a decent rookie year then regressed which appeared to be more coaching oriented than anything else if you watch his play on the line.

Why don't you bring some actual points to the table instead of just putting the man down ?

FWIW a reputable 49er fan site has uncovered that Scot's wife has filed for a divorce and this is likely what the "personal matter" is. It was not football related as reported by multiple media outlets.

Whatever the cause/reasoning here is it can't be good news to disrupt the personnel team this close to the draft. :(

You're acting like every draft you should get a superstar or decent starter. Doesn't work that way. Most people that are drafted in the NFL are forgotten about in a few seasons. McCloughn has actually done pretty decent during the time he's come here and provided us with a decent amount of quality players. There are only handful of drafts I can think of off the top of my head that were considered "great".

Him and ted are good buddies and have worked together a good deal in the past. Green Bay is a possible destination for him, TT tried to bring him there in 2005.

I doubt at this point in time he takes any jobs if in fact he doesn't still have one. 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco reports he is out altogether, Adam Schefter and ESPN report he is not out and that no release is forthcoming/it's a leave of absence. He could be back with the 49ers when the smoke clears from his personal matter (seemingly divorce).

If he is released he could land with TT in GB, with Holmgren/Heckert in Cleveland or back in Seattle. But none of those would be a in a GM type role, so he would likely first wait and see if he fields any interviews to be a team's GM first and foremost before taking on a lesser role with one of the other teams I mentioned he has a connection to.

Also don't rule out a job with Oakland as his dad works for and has had a longstanding relationship with Al Davis and with his soon to be ex wife and children living there (and likely have been since 2005), Oakland would allow him to stay closer to his family.
