View Full Version : Elvis Dumervil: Tendered a 1 & 3?

Someone here please explain to me the new rules, regarding the final 8 team rule, and the tender on Elvis.
Correct me where I'm wrong here (these rules confused me before, and now this CBA mess makes me worse):
None of the final 8 teams from the playoffs can sign a huge marquee FA until they have already lost one. That would mean the Cardinals could as they've lost Dansby.
Now, I also believe the poison pill is still in play, has not been outlawed. That's the thing that the Vikings used on Seattle 4 years ago to steal away Steve Hutchinson.
So, would it be possible for the Packers to sign away Dumervil for the Packers #23 & #96 picks?
I believe he is worth that, for the Packers at least.
What $ would the Packers have to pay to Doom?
The team's real only weakness was pass defense, and him combined with Matthews, IMO, would immediately upgrade the pass defense and make the CB's look a lot better.

Offensive line wasn't at all a weakness?
Antwan Odom and the Bengals would laugh at that... but that was the 2nd week of the season. By the end of the year it looked like that offense was hitting on all cylinders.

As far as I know any team that has a first and third round pick can sign?
They would have to work out a deal with Doom and his agent and Denver would have a week to either match the deal or get a 1st and 3rd in return.

Denver would match it. No questions asked. I'm sure they're hoping they can get a cheaper year out of Elvis, or are working on an extension, but if anyone on that roster is a long term Bronco, it's Dumervil.

I read somewhere last week about teams not using the "poison pill" since the classless Vikings used it to pry away Steve Hutchinson from Seattle.
The article said something like this:
A team trying to sign away a player from a team, and making it so that team cannot match it, could do something like this: Offer Dumervil a contract like this: X years, Y money, and clause that says the
"player must receive a bonus of $3 million for each game he plays in Denver".
Of course, this wouldn't cost the Packers much as they might never play a game in Denver in Elvis' career, and if they do, it will be one time. To stay in Denver, that would be an extra $24 million each year, making it a poison pill.
I know, I thought it was cheesy, classless. But apparently it is still allowed. I think. I can't remember exactly what the Vikings did to Seattle, but I know it pissed off Holmgren.

The Vikings put in a clause that said Hutchinson had to be the highest paid offensive lineman on the team or his entire salary would be guaranteed, something that the Seahawks couldn't afford to do with Walter Jones just signing a 7 year $52 million deal so the contract offered to Hutchinson would've immediately triggered the clause.
I wouldn't really call it classless, they took advantage of a loophole and got a premier player. Just my opinion though.

The Seahawks re-structured Walt's contract to make Hutch the highest paid and were going to match, but the arbitrator informed them that contract stated that he had to be the highest paid from the time he signed the tender. So basically the Seahawks would have had to know beforehand about the clause and restructured Walt's contract before Hutch signed his tender.
Basically they made it so the 1 week you have to match the offer was thrown out the window. Complete crap that the contract was allowed by the NFL.
Oh well though, Hutch obviously didn't want to be a Seahawk or he wouldn't have signed a contract that made it impossible for the team to retain him. So good riddance to the punk.

I feel like it had more to do with him not liking Shaun Alexander, them taking care of that overrated piece of crap first, and then him not really caring either way if he came back. So I say it's Ruskell's fault. So good riddance to that punk.

Believe the premise of the poison pill clause is saying the contract is fully guaranteed if the player plays x amount of games (could be 8, perhaps less like 4 would probably do the trick) in the city that the team with the opportunity to match plays in. So if you say the contract is fully guaranteed if Dumervil plays 8 games in Denver and the deal is (just throwing out random numbers here) 20 million guaranteed with a max value of 50 million, then that's 30 million of non-guaranteed money that all of a sudden Denver has to pay and that's just too big of a risk to take really.

The thing to remember with the poison pill is, after that one time it was used by the Vikings (and the Seahawks in a revenge move,) it hasn't been used since.
I think that after that, the owners got together and decided it wouldn't be tolerated anymore, even though there is no real ban on it.
I suppose if one owner wanted to be a classless dick in the eyes of the other teams, he could use it now, but I really don't expect to see it anymore until it is officially banned.

Not sure how the Vikes cop the blame on that one. They wanted him and were willing to give up the 1 and 3 to get him. Hutch is just as much the reason that the contract got signed, more so even because he signed it with that clause. Obviously the Vikes offered it but it took Hutch to make it possible and I'm guessing that the Seahawks would have played a pretty major role also. Normally teams work out to do the trade when a player wants to go elsewhere(see Whitehurst and Seattle for a recent example). This seems like a case of Seattle going, F U to Hutch and Minny, Hutch going FU to Seattle and Minnesota going ok to Hutch.

If Seattle wanted to keep Hutch so bad they should have just resigned him and instead of trying to give him the tender and risk losing him.

You have to give Seattle credit though. They found a very creative way to lose him for nothing.
If most teams wanted to do that they would have just done nothing.

While this is true, it doesn't change the fact that something behind the scenes has kept it from happening again since then.
I'm not directing this at anyone, just a general statement, but you'd have to be pretty naive to think that the owners didn't deal with this under the proverbial table. I don't expect to see the poison pill again and I believe the owners will officially ban it in the next CBA.
LOL, who's the clown calling the Vikings classless? If the Packers had gotten Hutch using the EXACT same method, you'd claim your front office was brilliant. Which is exactly what that offer sheet was. Brilliant.

I say it's classless because I feel confident that the other owners disliked it and have an under the table deal to not use it anymore.
That and, every other non-Vikings fan in the world throws that word around when talking about it it seems.
And I definitely wouldn't say it was ok by the Packers. Or any team really, even the Bears. If it was a good player, I'd be glad to have him, and Hutch is a good player, but I'd be the first to tell you it was a total dick move.

It is. I just disagree with the premise that the player can get fair market value. The fact that teams have to sacrifice a pick along with the contract would suggest that they would be unwilling to spend as much cash.
It's a means of restricting their labor rights to keep the costs down, ditto the franchise tag.

How so? It's not like the Vikes found a way to get around paying the draft picks and it's not like the Seahawks couldn't have matched the offer. Minny put his market value as the guaranteed best lineman on his team. Seattle did not and chose not to match. No reason they couldn't have matched and made his contract guaranteed if they truly wanted him.
Again, this is far more on Seattle than Minny. Minny were just smart to make the move, they essentially traded for Hutch and sacrificed a future flexibility on line contracts to get him. Again, Seattle chose not to re-sign him before his contract expired, they chose to be cheap and only use a transitional tag instead of franchise then they chose to let him go by not matching.
The poison pill itself is not that easy to use, I would say that at least partially explains why it hasn't been seen since, whether the owners are keeping it out is another issue but also possible.

They will get atleast 2 wins against us and the chiefs since for the last 3 or 4 years thats how it usually goes. We play the NFC West who has probably the worst team in football in the rams, a seahawks team that has a new coaching staff, 9ers who are kind of unknown at this point and a Warner-less Cardinals.

Yeah but reputation counts. There's doing things to get ahead and then there's exploiting the system and making yourself look bad. I'm not familiar with the situation, but from the sounds of things, a clause guaranteeing someone as the highest paid OL on their team is okay. The other thing offered up, saying that each game played in one city is an extra x amount of dollars is ridiculous, and I don't think the NFL would ever allow that.
But yeah, reputation is pretty important. If you go out of your way to **** over other teams, other teams will return the favour.

Legit. I won't argue that making a dick move to win isn't worth it in the short term, just that we've all got long lives ahead of us and will be fans for a while. So while that dick move helped in the short run, the bridges a dick move can burn could certainly end up out weighing one season of near success, because I don't think you guys find a QB capable of taking you guys on a superbowl run before Hutch retires, over the course of your fanhood.[/run on sentence]

Seattle overpaid Burleson the next year to try and piss us off, but that didn't work out as well for them. I don't know the exact loopholes or whatever that the Vikes went through to get Hutch, but most teams would have done the same thing in our situation, and if they weren't willing to, then I would be pissed off as a fan. Honestly I don't know. He's avoided the AE detector, so there's actually a good chance he is a real person we haven't encountered before.

I took the liberty of +repping RWFender, so now RC3 is 1st place. Or last place, as the case may be.

Nah seriously though, he is banned. That was fun while it lasted, though. We had some epic PM flame wars. Which basically was him yelling at me(see sig) and me replying with image macros and youtube videos.
Let's hopefully bring this thread back to the original intent. We had seriously better match whateva the **** anyone offers Elvis. He is the KING.

RC3 doesn't deserve to have the worst rep in DC history, you should boost him up, as is he's a desecration of the greatness that was GRF, Heather, IDD and, my favorite, Middlelinebacker54.

Elvis is a beast. Who would try and sign him away? The Jets? I can't really think of many teams who could afford to spend a 1st and a 3rd on him.

The Pats would easily give a 1st and 3rd and the money for this guy they have 3 2nd round picks and 2 firsts next season they could fill a major need at OLB and either sit there in the 2nd round take 3 young guys and not bat an eye or they can trade back into the first cheap real cheap. Eagles always do it trade back in and take that first round guy if there is someone there they love so much.

The Pats don't have a third do they? That's why I didn't count them because I assumed they wouldn't want to give up a first and a second, since they don't have a third?
