Just my opinion. Really an illustration of how good this draft is. I thought about how to define "first round grade" and decided on "guys I'd be happy to get at #32 without knowing what our specific needs were or what our scheme was." Seems like a logical definition.

If you use V.I.P.'s criteria, I think it's really easy to come up with more than 32 players with a 1st round grade.

Players in BOLD are fringe 1st/2nd round talent... They have the option of going first, but also can be picked in the second-really depends on a team needs them / etc....

People not bolded are solid 1st round picks

Why is everybody giving Pouncey a 1st round grade, do you all really think he is worth a 1st round pick? He can't be a better prospect than Nick Mangold or Eric Wood, could he?

He is a better prospect than Alex Mack IMO and is IMO the best C prospect in the last few years which means he is better than Mangold, Charles Spencer and Eric Wood.

Well thats just ridiculous. Hes more versatile then Mack and Mangold, but he certainly isnt a better C prospect then either of them. Id have him about on par with Eric Wood from last year, who wasnt really as good as Mangold or Mack. Mangold was insane.

I'd say that Pouncey has all the same ability as Mangold, but Pouncey is more powerful and Pouncey has the ability to handle nose tackles one on one coming out of college, something that Mangold couldn't do. I'd also say that Pouncey is better than Mack in the run game.

C prospects in the past 5 years:
1. Pouncey
2. Mack
3. Mangold

Pouncey is the most versatile of the three, he has the pass blocking abilities of both of them but he is more powerful than both of them in the run game and he can handle the nose coming out of college. Mack could handle the nose and he could protect the passer very well but what Mack lacked that Pouncey has is the ability to create a consistent push in the run game. Mangold was a great pass protector but he wasn't able to handle the nose and he was probably the worst run blocker of the three coming out.

I would rank them like this:

1. Alex Mack - his size, strength, flexibility and awareness were exceptional. He also had very good mobility

2. Nick Mangold - Very strong and stout, nice feet and a very good feel for the position

3. Maurkice Pouncey - Like Mangold but just not as good in any area. Though Pouncey does provide a bit of extra value with his versatility.

You're a little friendlier than I would be with my first round grades. Especially in the WR class. I don't see how Damian Williams would make it into the first round, not even at #32, and I think Deymarius physical gifts would place him round 1, but not his actually play due to lack of route running.

Only 1 of the TEs you see as a first round need? I guess if I had the "soulja" I wouldn't be too concerned with TE either though, I do see Gronkowski as a guy I could be happy with @ 32.

I only disagree with 1 of the OTs, Valdimir Ducasse, he's a RT only to me, his feet aren't good enough to play left, and I just don't grade him out as a first round guy, he fits more in my 3rd round category, a guy with potential, but not ready to start day 1.

I wouldn't be happy with Patrick Robinson at all in the first. Again, first round based on #s guy, but based on his play on the football field the guy needs a whole lot of work, and seems to fit the 3rd round criteria of my book.

Overall this is a pretty good list though, just a few little things we don't see eye to eye on, but isn't that what this is all about anyway? Good post.

Who I would give a first round grade to. I'm not going based on just this year's crop of talent, I'm going based on an average year in the draft, so I may end up with more, or less than 32 players when all is said and done.

QB (3)- Sam Bradford, Jimmy Claussen, Tim Tebow (unpopular I'm sure, but the kid has the work ethic and the physical gifting to be a QB in the NFL, not only that he's got all of the intangibles of a leader, if I'm picking at 32, I likely already have a franchise QB, and this kid can learn from him and grow into my starter)

RB (3)- C.J. Spiller, Ryan Matthews, Jahvid Best

FB ()- thought about putting Jonathan Dwyer here, because if ever there was a fullback worth taking in the first round he'd be the guy I'd want, but I think a GM would lose their job for taking a FB round 1.

WR (1)- Dez Bryant
This WR class to me is horribly weak at the top, but at the 2nd tier incredibly stacked, it's quite a strange lineup of WR talent, but if I was picking @32 in any given year, I would consider the other WRs a little bit of a reach.

TE (2)- Jermaine Gresham, Rob Gronkowski
I know I know, Gronkowski had a terrible injury, but his potential is off the charts good. He's a guy I can put as an inline blocker and a guy who can stretch the field for me. There's 1 situational player I'd put as a first round TE, and that's Dorin Dickerson. If I was the Colts picking @32 this is a guy I'd have to consider, given how I like to use my TE to create mismatches, but that's the only team I would consider him a fringe 1st round prospect for

OT (4)- Russel Okung, Bryan Bulaga, Anthony Davis, Trent Williams
I'm not as high on this class as a lot of people are, I think it's a strong point in this draft, and I know that tackles are infinitely important in the pro game, but I can't grade a guy who I don't think could start day 1 as a first round prospect, that's why my list ends here.

OG/C (2)- John Jerry, Maurkice Pouncey
I know I know, I'm crazy for not putting Iupati in the first round, and honestly I likely would if I was picking @32, BUT, I don't like how much he holds, he got away with it in college, but all he does is hold, and that would kill my offense, until the kid learns to punch and not grab he's not starting day 1 for my team, and that knocks him off my first round board.

DE (1)- Derrick Morgan
***Note, I believe all of the following players will be drafted in the first in this year's draft, but I don't feel like they would in every draft, or even most drafts***
JPP is the flavor of the week, going to need a lot of coaching, and might start from day 1, but has too many similarities to other DE freak busts for my taste. Brandon Graham is the hardest working player in the draft aside from Tim Tebow, the guy never quits, never gives up, and will be a locker room favorite. With that being said, he has career backup written all over him. He's a hustle player, not a guy who's going to out skill the tackles in the NFL, he's got good not elite burst, he's got excellent technique, but so do the tackles starting in the NFL. He's a guy I'd love to have on my team because I think he'd be a fan favorite, but he's not a first rounder for me. Everson Griffen is the only other DE that I would take in the first round this year, but I wouldn't in most years, so he's off the list.
***Carlos Dunlap has too many character flaws to take in the first round, ever***

DT(4)- Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Jared Odrick, Terrence Cody
This DT class is phenomenal, and a guy like Dan Williams is worthy of a first round grade this year, so is Brian Price, but for me, depending what system I'm running, these are the 4 first rounders for me, Suh and McCoy fit any system, Odrick fits a good penetrating system, and Cody fits the 3-4 NT. Brian Price is a top flight 2nd rounder no matter what year imo.

OLB(3)- Sean Weatherspoon, Daryl Washington, Sergio Kindle
Honorable mention goes to JPP as a 3-4 OLB. I've got Weatherspoon, and Washington as OLBs in the first for a 4-3 defense, especially cover 2 schemes, and Kindle as a 3-4 rush backer, and possible SLB in the 4-3.

ILB(3)- Brandon Graham, Rolando McClain, Sean Lee
In the 3-4 I've got Graham as my #1 ILB, he fits the bill perfectly there to me. McClain in a 3-4 or a 4-3, and Sean Lee fits either scheme as well, but could also be an OLB in the 4-3 system.

CB(5)- Kyle Wilson, Joe Haden, Kareem Jackson, Devin McCourty, Perrish Cox
These guys I have going in the first round in any given year of CBs, I also have a few more who are fringe first round guys, Amari Spievey, Chris Cook, and Jerome Murphy. I see them all as solid top of the 2nd tier guys. But I have McCourty and Cox on the list due to their abilities in the return game as well as the CB position. I think it's exceptionally rare to find a CB who can be an effective starter from day 1 in the NFL, that's why those guys make the list, because of their ability to contribute on ST, as well as eventually being a solid #2 or better CB.

S(3)- Eric Berry, Taylor Mays, Chad Jones
Chad Jones may be a little bit of a reach, but I just really like this kid and how he plays I think his game fits in the pros very well and no matter what year if I was picking @32 he'd be a guy I'd have to consider very strongly. Eric Berry is the best football player in this year's draft imo, and Taylor Mays is going to bust, but I don't see how with those numbers he could ever escape the first round.

***Final Total***
34 first round grades

I think I was a little bit liberal with the Chad Jones pick, but other than that I think I played it pretty close, and even harsh at some points. This is an exceptionally strong top of the draft no matter how you cut it, and with all the CB talent out there this year, it's possible the best CB in the draft may not even make it into the first round, which I guess you could say that about any year, since no one is a lock, but I just mean the depth at that position especially is astounding.

Some of you guys are a bit generous I think haha. Here are the players I have with a 'first round grade.' My definition of a 'first round grade' is someone that would likely go in the first regardless of the year and talent around them. Someone that, even in a deep class at their position, would still warrant top round selections.

QB (2) - Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen
RB (1) - C.J. spiller
WR (1) - Dez Bryant
TE (1) - Jermaine Gresham
OT (4) - Russell Okung, Bryan Bulaga, Trent Williams, Anthony Davis
OG (1) - Mike Iupati
C (1) - Maurkice Pouncey

Total: 11 offensive prospects

DE (4) - Derrick Morgan, Jason Pierre-Paul, Brandon Graham, Carlos Dunlap
DT (6) - Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Dan Williams, Jared Odrick, Terrence Cody, Brian Price
OLB (2) - Sean Weatherspoon, Sergio Kindle
ILB (1) - Rolando McClain
CB (3) - Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson, Kareem Jackson
S (3) - Eric Berry, Taylor Mays, Earl Thomas

Total: 19 Defensive Prospects

That gives me 30 players that have definitive 1st round grades on them. Looks like, in my eyes, at least two teams will be reaching in the first haha.
