View Full Version : Best players never to receive an All-Pro (Ass. Press) or Pro Bowl bid?
Hmm...Mike Minter? Andre Waters? Jake Reed? Brian Kellly? Tom Rathman? Donovan Darius? Aaron Brooks maybe? Just a few off the top of my head.

That's what FB are, you have to be... I wish I could remember watching him play, another reason that makes me wish I was born earlier.

Jake Reed doesnt put up those numbers without Cris Carter on the field.

Agree with Toomer. He and Shockey made Kerry Collins a 4000 yard passer for cryin out loud.

Derrick Mason, I know he's made a couple Pro Bowls, but IDK if he's even been named to an All-Pro team.
Jake Reed doesnt put up those numbers without Cris Carter on the field.
Okay...Jerry Rice probably doesn't have as many productive seasons without Joe Montana and Steve Young throwing him the ball. Eric Moulds probably would have had a better career if he had a consistent quarterback to toss him the rock. Reed was still a good player and still put up big numbers.

Okay I admit that was a reach.

Wow Toomer nothing? Very surprised.
My homer pick is Dat Nguyen. He was 2nd team All-Pro one time (no Pro Bowls), not sure if that's enough to disqualify him from this conversation.

When was Derrick Mason ever one of the 4 best WRs in the league?

When was Derrick Mason ever one of the 4 best WRs in the league?
Well in 2003 he was in the top 4 in receptions...if that counts. But I don't remember any one season where Mason truly dominated at his position and would be in the top three off the top of my head in any given year. But the man has been to a couple of Pro Bowls and made the 1st team All-Pro list in 2000, so he doesn't qualify.

Did Donnie Edwards ever make one?
Not the same, but crazy years not to make the pro bowl;
Rodney Harrison - 2000
Ladainian Tomlinson - 2003
Donnie Edwards - 2004

Lots of linemen should be on here, too. Since most people (media included) don't watch or know how to evaluate linemen, you see a lot of the same guys voted in year after year based on name recognition alone.

Not a super star, or close to being one, but Jeff Hostetler had a couple of solid seasons with the Raiders.
Reggie Hayward. He was a decent player. Not so sure about now with the Jaguars. I also though Ken Lucas was a good player back in the day. Ricky Sanders for the Redskins too.

Thought of another one...Mike Peterson

Was a beast of a WLB and MLB in Indy and Jax's Cover Two schemes. His best year he finished with 131 tackles, 6 sacks, and 3 picks.

I was about to mention Anthony Simmons. His career was cut short due to injuries, he only played 3 full seasons, but the guy was a monster when he was on the field and healthy.
His 2000 season he had 147 tackles, 4 sacks 2 fumbles forced and 2 INTs. Should have been in the pro-bowl that year over Keith Mitchell.

In 1993 a spot was reserved specifically for Fullbacks in the Pro Bowl as the position had changed since the days of Jim Brown and Larry Csonka. It meant players like Daryl Johnston, Larry Centers, Keith Byars and later Lorenzo Neal got a ticket to Hawaii.
There were and still are 4 spots on each Conference for running backs but the new ruling meant 3 halfbacks and 1 fullback would get selected for each Conference instead of the 4 halfbacks with all the big stats.
As such Tom Rathman never got the Pro Bowl recognition his career deserved. He would surely have been the NFC choice at fullback during the 49ers' glory years of the late 80's.

Fred Taylor has had a pretty underrated career.
It amazes me how he often gets overlooked. I know he's been an injury prone guy, but he was always a top RB when healthy. When looking at the best running backs in the last decade or so, he should be mentioned.
My homer pick is Dat Nguyen. He was 2nd team All-Pro one time (no Pro Bowls), not sure if that's enough to disqualify him from this conversation.
I loved Dat when he played. The guy was a smart player who played at a high level. I think he could have really carved out a name for himself if he didn't get that neck injury.
