Brent is sour because he invested in Zune and it busted in his face like a Peter North film.

Eh, Apple tech support has always helped me out extensively when I've called, and I don't have a warranty at all. Just the Defender case which is the **** :D I've never had this problem, but I'd at least call tech support to see what they recommend.

If you don't mind wiping the iPod(as in your library is in tact and everything) you can use My Computer and format it, then when you reconnect it should automatically detect.

If it doesn't appear in My Computer then it is the iPod itself not iTunes causing the problem, only solution I have for that would be to put it into disk mode(normally holding up and left or right on the click wheel) but google it for your particular iPod model, the other option is to reset the iPod and see what happens(again it is a click wheel combo, google it).

If the reset works then you are good, if not use disk mode and see if it shows up on My Computer. If it still doesn't show your iPod is most likely dead. Disk mode basically turns the iPod into a USB stick so if it can't find it you are in trouble I would think.

If nothing else works, try a different USB port on your PC, it is possible that the USB port has died, alternatively test the USB port with something else.

actually it still works, but it's now just a backup drive for all my music. my phone functions as my mp3 player.
