Kind of disappointing, lol. I like Best a lot, hopefully we take him at 34, I'd hope to trade down at there a few spots and then nab him.

So it's settled.. Jahvid Best won't be a Lion.

Unless, of course, an Offensive Coach yells "Take Best from Cal" from the back of the room when we're on the clock.

I don't think I'd be particularly upset with Scott's final mock (actually I'd be quite happy with it), but I'm not a huge fan of Joe McKnight.

Actually, I shouldn't say that. I love his potential, I just don't think he's really lived up to it yet. If he does, he could be amazing.

I don't see any way that Suh isn't our pick. Mayhew doesn't want to follow in Millen's footsteps and Suh is a nice safe pick.
If Im picking I'd take Okung and use round 2 to find a DT since this draft is loaded at DT.
I just wonder what we will all be saying if Stafford gets seriously hurt next year because Backus couldn't protect him.

Or for that matter if we pick Okung and Stafford still gets hurt and Suh lights it up in Tampa Bay? There is always second guessing.

But also I don't see us staying settled on OL just because we pass on Okung for the 2nd overall pick.

So apparently Kowalski is saying the Lions would be very interested if the Raiders were offering up Darren McFadden. According to him the Lions offered up their 3rd rounder (#66). How would you feel about that?

I honestly would not be happy. I know McFadden seemed like a stud in college, but the guy goes down way to easily. Seems like a straight speed guy to me and nothing else at this point.

The two scenarios I am hoping for today are:

Bradford goes #1, Suh is the pick

or

Suh goes #1, trade back with TB for a 3rd, they take McCoy, then trade back again with CLE or OAK for a 2nd and a future 2nd and take Berry, Haden, Spiller or reach for K Wilson or B Graham.

Personally I would love the trade scenario the most, I want Suh and all but stock piling picks should be priority #1 for us.

Have fun watching everyone!

I would just like to say that I am 26 and have been a Detroit Lions fan since I was born and brought into it by my mother. I have lived through pretty much only bad memories. One of my favorite moments as a Lions fan was drafting Matthew Stafford last year. This was a turing point in the franchise and I believe that today assuming Bradford goes number one, drafting Suh on defense will have the same "building block" feel that Stafford was/is. I can't wait. I will die as a damn Lions fan even if they don't have another winning season for the rest of the my life. Cheers to Mr. Suh...

I guess, since they lost Taylor this year the may need another RB, but if we gave 34, our 4th and a 7th I think we gave up too much.. no we have
no 4th, 5th or 6th round picks, with only our 3rd and 3 7th's left. I sure hope Mayhew knows what he is doing :)

ok so we swaped 4th round picks with the Vikes, nowI dont mind the trade as much, Suh and Best, nice first day. from what I find here are the details on the trade..

Lions receive:

30th overall pick and select Jahvid Best
128th overall pick (Minnesota's fourth-rounder)

Vikings receive:

34th overall pick (Detroit's second-rounder)
100th overall pick (Detroit's fourth-rounder)
214th overall pick (Originally Cleveland's seventh-rounder)

Well I think the Saint might of got it too, but they just swapped 4th's so it actually wasn't that bad of a deal.

Here is the Day One recap

1(002) DT / Ndamukong Suh / Nebraska
1(030) RB / Jahvid Best / California
3(066)

7(213)
7(220)

ironman4579
04-22-2010, 10:17 PM
Yea, it just scrolled across on NFL network

Lions get
Vikings 1st rounder (Jahvid Best)
Vikings 4th rounder (#128)

Vikings get
Lions 2nd rounder (#34)
Lions 4th rounder (#100)
Lions 7th rounder (#214)

Basically we just moved back into the first, dropped down in the 4th, and gave up one of the million 7th rounders we have. Really good trade from my perspective.

A few things to keep in mind about Best is that he should make a instant impact and will prob get over 1,000 yards from scrimmage his rookie year. His speed could be killer in the dome. You can never have enough weapons for a young QB and the lions have greatly improved the depth at the skill positions

LonghornsLegend

I saw Detroit taking Best, figured you guys would wait but seeing you only gave up a 7th really, and didn't risk losing him, I love the move. He's a play-maker, he can really do some special things on the field and you have to love what the organization has put around Stafford and Calvin.

Best is a great fit with or without K Smith. Great start to the draft for you guys I felt, and I could also of easily seen Minny taking Best if they didn't like Clausen.

Random names I'd like to see us get in the rest of the draft:: Brandon Ghee, Jerome Murphy, Corey Wooton, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Kam Chancellor, Walter Thurmond, Myron Rolle, O'Brien Schofield, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Clifton Geathers, Brandon Lang, Perry Riley, Javier Arenas, anddd Lindsey Witten. Now, having said those names.. we're not gonna draft any of them.. Oh well, I definitely trust Mayhew.

I'm not a big fan of the trade (I didn't think we needed to trade up), the Rams would probably have taken a Roger Saffold rather than Best and we coulda kept our own 4th, and not drop 28 spots.... but I do like both players. So in: happy camper.

Vikings claimed they got 4 other calls for pick #30 but decided to deal with Detroit based on where there picks were ... so it was not those teams who were left on the board (maybe NO?) but the unseen teams calling in to move up as well. The unseen teams were who Mayhew likely feared. If they had a CB targeted & Best (obviously) they were likely Wilson & McCourty. When thy were taken Best was all that was left & THE guy they wanted. So they maade it happen, I like that move.

Disagree.

We still need to add protection for Stafford. I wouldn't say mission accomplished until we get a few OLs with potential. I'm hoping someone like Asamoah falls to us a third and then maybe we get one of those 6'7" maulers with one of our 7ths.

ESPN's analysis of Okung wasn't too flattering.

What he brings: Okung is not an elite athlete for a left-tackle prospect and his footwork needs improvement. Still, he is quick and agile enough to hold his own in pass protection at left tackle in the NFL. He's also a tough, nasty run-blocker who looks to put defenders on their backs. He proved to be a consistent performer and hard worker in college who will continue to improve his game at the NFL level.

Man, with that report he was considered a potential #2 pick? Granted its only one scouting report and shouldn't be taken as gospel but its not a glowing report for a guy who should be a franchise LT.

http://detnews.com/article/20100423/SPORTS0101/4230381

"We felt like there were three running backs in this draft that we liked. The other two guys got drafted, and we felt we could move up there and get Jahvid Best, so we made that move. We wanted to get up there and get him."

Not shocking but interesting. I guess after Best, Spiller and Matthews they didnt seem much else at RB.

We still have an unproven CB S, & OLB slot to fill on an already league worst defense from last year! (starters there are penciled in as J. Wade, M. Manuel & Z. Follett) At least Backus, Sims, Cherilus, Dom & Peterman have starting experience & are decent lineman.

I am almost certain with picks 3 & 4 (as they sit now) Detroit will address defense. CB, S & OLB ... 2 of those 3 positions.

Javier Arenas & Kam Chancellor would really improve the secondary & overal D with the other AWESOME additions from the off season.

Disagree.

We still need to add protection for Stafford. I wouldn't say mission accomplished until we get a few OLs with potential. I'm hoping someone like Asamoah falls to us a third and then maybe we get one of those 6'7" maulers with one of our 7ths.

CB is such a bigger need than OT. Gosder has been nothing special but he's still young and should be given some more time to develop. Luckily he plays a position (RT) which can be easily filled at a later date if need be. Plus John Jansen is a serviceable RT. We don't have two starting CB's, and decent CB's are much harder to find than decent RT's. Chris Houston is a borderline starting CB at that. Jonathan Wade, Eric King and the rest of the bunch are merely depth. We need another starting caliber CB in the worst of ways. I'm really hoping for Murphy or Ghee at 66.

Round 3: IMO it should be defense.

Cook, Ghee, Cox, Owusu-Ansah, Franks, Bowman, Donald Butler, Ducasse, Asamoah, Veldheer, Wootton.

Round 4: Open to a WR that falls (Cooper, Shipley, Price, etc)
I just want BPA here. Preferably at a Need that hasn't been addressed.

Any CB or other player listed in my Round 3, Ciron Black, Mike Johnson, Lauvao, Greg Hardy, Rennie Curran, Myron Rolle. Top of the board, no matter position.

2 high impact starters is enough for me. The rest of this draft will just be about depth and competition. technically speaking though, we have our 2010 Oline starters already set. Picking Asamoah would just be picking a backup, whereas a CB would have potential to compete for one of the starting jobs. Donald Butler or a Bowman pick would add a high impact starter to our defense. However, I can see them waiting until the 7th and having a few favorites in mind at LB. I really hope our 7th Rounders don't have to make the team.

Disagree ...

I know this might sound crazy but I could see us grabbing another DT simply because he might be the best guy available....maybe a guy like Troup, who the Lions brought in for a visit.

Jimmy boy loves to rotate his DTs and we could probably move Williams next yr if he rebounds in his return to a 4-3.

I'm not his biggest fan or anything, but Bruce Campbell would be an awesome pick in Round 4 for us. Tons of potential there, it'd be worth the risk at this point. Also, I know we don't need a WR at all but I think Carlton Mitchell would be a nice pickup, he's one of the better deep threats in the draft. I could see us picking a Corner in Round 4, Spievey miiiiiiiiiight be better off at FS. I also wouldn't be so disappointed if we took another RB, like Jonathan Dwyer or Anthony Dixon. Be on the lookout for my homeslice Deji Karim!

Couple later round guys that sound like Schwartz types to me.. MLB Mike McLaughlin, and DE/OLB Danny Batten.

Sucks that Jerome Murphy went one pick ahead of us. I would've liked to see Brandon Ghee there, but I trust Mayhew and company.

Willie Young, DE NC State - 14 TFLs, 8 sacks last year

Found this in a toolbox...

At 6-4 and 250 pounds, Young is a big defensive end. He may not be the quickest end around, but he has the strength to blow over opposing linemen. While his speed may be a problem at times, it certainly does not mean he lacks quick feet and the intelligence to read a play and use his instincts to attack the ball. His age and experience mean he is ready for the NFL right now and a team who does not have the luxury to develop a defensive end should nab Young in the second round.
2/1 Update: Young's stock has slipped a little bit, but he is still an experienced defensive end who is ready to contribute right away. While a player like Jason Pierre-Paul is quicker and a more explosive athlete, Young should be able to step in and be a consistent defensive end from day one.

I checked out Willie's stuff on NFL

Strengths
Young possesses ideal height for the next level. He's an athletic guy who appears comfortable enough in space to get a shot at 3-4 outside linebacker. Productive during his career. Has long arms and hand quickness to get blockers off his body. Has a high ceiling for development.

Weaknesses
Young could afford to add some bulk. He currently lacks the natural strength and power necessary to hold up at the point of attack. Could benefit from an expanded pass rush package. Natural instincts and reactions need to improve for the next level. Needs to finish with aggression on a more consistent basis.

Not bad at all, Our staff really focuses on being in the wait room. So that looks like a sleeper pick

You guys did a very solid job. Suh will make the defense much better right away. Best will improve the return game and give the Lions a big-play threat and can get 5-10 carries. Willie Young tied for the DL lead at the combine with a 38 inch vertical. He's also gonna be a 25 year old rookie.

]The Lions drafted another edge rusher in Willie Young of NC St. He's 6-5, 251, with 34 1/2-inch arms. He's high-hipped, but highly inconsistent. However, he's a natural bender who can accelerate of the edge and get to the QB.

Blount must not have impressed the staff at the Senior Bowl like most thought. Probably for the best, but big, fast guys that people tend to bounce off of are always solid for depth. I thought he was going to be the irrelevant pick or Donovan Warren ... who .....

It looks like he is a Jet now.

...... got some really bad information to come out as a Junior! What a dumb move, obviously should have stayed put for hsi senior year. Got the degree, another year to improve on the weaknesses etc ... good luck now making the Jets practice squad!

Add on the draft picks spent on Corey Williams, Rob Sims, Chris Houston and Shaun Hill and you can add 3 more starters and a solid backup QB with starting experience.

I include these with the Lions picks which make me think they did an even better job. Those are all starters for Detroit and huge upgrades, Detroit needed to hit on as many starters as they possibly could. Granted Hill isn't a starter, and Houston is average at best, but they were still needed. Sims and Williams both though are significant upgrades I believe to positions much needed.

I'm not expecting too many UDFA's to come to Detroit at this point (after all if you can pick a situation my guess would be you go to a good team?) but this has been another excellent offseason, I just hope the results are good next year. That'd be nice.

as long as we pick outside of the top 5 next year then i won't be too disappointed. 6-10 range is alright since we'd have 4-5 wins at least.

Not sure if this is accurate, but UDFA signings so far appear to be:

RB Aaron Higdon- (5'8" 190) Charleston
FB Matt Clapp- (6'2" 246) Oklahoma
WR Michael Moore-( 6'0" 207) Georgia
TE Richard Dickson - (6'2" 245) LSU
DT Robert Callaway - (6'5" 312) Saginaw Valley State
LB Ryan Stamper - (6'1" 235) Florida
CB Aaron Berry - (5'11" 180) Pittsburgh
LS Sam Scroggins - (6'5" 240) West Virginia State
DE Chima Ihekwoaba - (6'3" 260) Wilfrid Laurier (Tryout)

I actually think that Ihekwoaba could make the team from his tryout. The guy is actually extremely athletic. At the CFL combine he had a 42.5" vertical, 4.37 short shuttle, and 10' broad jump.

EDIT: Just watched a highlight video of him, and he doesn't look nearly as explosive as those workout numbers would indicate.

Video I could find of some of the guys:

Stamper from UF could make the team and contribute. I'm glad to see Michael Moore get a chance he's a solid player nothing special though.

Higdon doesn't look too bad. He apparently led all NCAA RB's last year with a 9.9 YPC average. I doubt he ever ends up being a contributor as a RB, but from the highlight tape (not the best source, I know) he may be able to make the team as a kick/punt returner.
