We have had these before, but after the recent interest in the X-Men thread, I decided to run another one. Any sort of graphic character will be accepted, but only if their original appearance was in a comic. Therefore, no movie comics/tie in characters are legitimate, or graphic novels based on other media. If it doesnt come from a comic first, it isn't fair game. I'll be running and participating, and afterwards we will have a judging and a voting session for both participants and the public. Categories to be considered before selecting are

- Popularity/Recognizable
- Strength
- Duration (How long have they lasted in their, or other, comics)
- X factor (What makes them unique, cool, badass, etc.)

Looking for about 12 people for 10 rounds. Let the registration begin!

Some will call this a reach, but hes definitively more powerful and much more versatile then anyone picked already except Superman, and his popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, and just last week received a new solo publication. I pick the merc with the mouth, Deadpool. Couldnt risk not getting him!

http://www.pollsb.com/photos/o/45711-deadpool.jpg

Popularity: Has skyrocketed in recent years due to several solo publications and the extremely popular Cable & Deadpool series. His inclusion in several videogames, aong with his wisecracking and entertaining personality, have made him one of the most popular characters of the modern era.

Strength: To put it plainly, he's immortal. After his brief love affair with Death, Thanos granted him immortality to put a stop to their relationship. Also, his healing factor is so strong he has survived decapitation several times. He is perhaps the best physical combatant in the Marvel universe, with Nick Fury once stating he would be the most dangerous man in the world if he wasn't so insane. He is a top tier martial artist and assassin, and is capable of handling almost any weapon with unparalleled skill. Also, he is 2nd only to Bullseye as a marksman and rarely misses. He has defeated Wolverine on numerous occasions, Spiderman, Daredevil, Captain America, and all of the Thunderbolts simultaneously in hand-to-hand combat. He is immune to telepathy and his style of combat, which is extremely erratic, cannot be duplicated by anyone, even the muscle mimic Taskmaster.

Duration: Relatively short in comparison to other characters picked to this point, but his publication history dates back to 1991. However, it is only within the past 12 years or so where his popularity has really begun to grow.

X-Factor: Come on...its Deadpool! Hes about as cool as they come. An iconic anti-hero, he is best known for his hilarious wisecracks and his tendency to break the fourth wall. He is aware that he is in a comic book, and he loves it. One of the most eccentric and entertaining characters in all of comics.

Shane P. Hallam

I select:

Magneto

http://www.earthsmightiest.com/images/users/uploads/21/magneto.jpg

Popularity/Recognizable: Magneto has to be one of the most recognizable villains and comic icons in the world. I'd guess he ranks right up there behind Superman, Batman, and Wolverine.

Strength: He is crazy powerful obviously. Powers are extremely useful, and he has shown some telepathic abilities too, which you can't deny.

Duration: Been around since the 60s, definitely durable as he has been a mainstay in the X-Men comics both as a villain and a hero.

X factor: Can you get any more badass than Magneto? I think not. The dude has depth as a character and is extremely powerful. Can't deny taking someone of this caliber at 11.

I select:

Phoenix/Jean Grey

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/JMPTX/ThunderdomeS3/kiribati/Phoenix.png

Popularity/Recognizable: Jean Grey is probably the 2nd most recognizable female super hero. Obviously a mainstay in the X-Men comics, she has had some famous storylines (specifically the Phoenix one which I am hitting on here).

Strength: Grey herself is an Omega Level mutant, but add in Phoenix, and you could very well have one of the most powerful heros in this draft.

Duration: Been around since the 60s, definitely durable as she has been on the X-Men from the beginning.

X factor: The Phoenix Saga is as bad ass a storyline as you can get. Dark and light sides of Jean Grey appeared when merged with the Phoenix Force entity and it has become a huge piece of the character itself. Powers and recognizability is there. Plus the depth of the character is just awesome. The love triangle, the reactions when Dark Phoenix and how she has to react to the X-Men afterwards. All gravy.

Just to be clear, I'm allowing him to draft Jean Grey and Phoenix here, even though in recent years Marvel has maintained that Phoenix and Jean Grey are two separate individuals. I was so torn on my 2nd rd pick, but I couldnt pass up the Hulk. One of the strongest characters in the Marvel universe. And the guy had a TV series and a couple movies. Plus people who are not into comics at all, all know who the Hulk is.

Pick 1. Joker. I was hoping somehow Batman would be here but hell who would I be kidding. I think for the longest time through the third grade for me I really believed I was going to be batman when I grew up. And no matter which new comic my dad would bring home to me when I was younger, no villain was ever living up to the Joker. Easily able to match Batmans brain power, the fact that Joker is nothing but pure chaos makes him so much more dangerous than any other villain in the batman universe. Maybe not the strongest of Villains, but he certainly would be one of the last I would want to fight. http://z.about.com/d/comicbooks/1/0/q/G/joker22.jpg

Pick 2. Not as popular as some of the other guys but certainly one of the more over powered ones, I gotta go with Dr. Manhattan. Its safe to say almost no one could measure up to the power he wields. Maybe a bit early, but my number one and number two were already taken. http://sanseverything.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/dr20manhattan203.jpg

I select The Silver Surfer.

http://ro42g.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/silver-surfer-movie.jpg

Popularity: Although his popularity has waned slightly in recent years, no doubt in connection with the atrocities that were the two Fantastic 4 movies, The Silver Surfer, with his iconic and striking appearance, was one of the most popular comic book characters during his heyday and his solo run. Also, in 1998, the Surfer starred in his own animated series. Most definitely one of the more popular Marvel characters.

Strength: In terms of pure strength, the Surfer is capable if going toe to toe with almost anyone in the Marvel universe. Wielding The Power Cosmic, the Surfer is capable of manipulating the universe at a subatomic level and some of his powers include being able to travel at the speed of light, superhuman speed, strength, stamina, durability and senses. The Surfer can analyze and manipulate matter and energy, and molecularly restructure or animate matter at will, even transmuting elements or creating objects. He can also project energy in various forms for offensive and defensive use, including the erection of force shields, and bolts of cosmic force powerful enough to destroy entire planets. He has gone head to head with Galactus and emerged victorious. He is arguably one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe.

Duration: The Surfer's publication history dates back to 1966, and he has been a central figure in Marvel comics since closely after that date. While usually tied in some way to the Fantastic 4, he has anchored several solo publications and an animated series. He is a lasting character.

X-Factor: The Surfer is unique in that he was introduced primarily as a villain with good intentions. Serving as Galactus's slave before encountering Earth, he bears a huge emotional burden and has on more then one occasion lamented at the loss of life on his behalf. Not to mention, how cool does he look? So awesome.

SS is a complete cosmic badass. And he was made out to been a complete wuss in FF2.

Popularity: While only comic book enthusiasts may have known about Iron Man before the movie arrived in theaters in 2008 after his popularity has skyrocketed. With the much anticipated Iron Man 2 due in theaters soon his popularity should not wane any time soon.

Duration: First appeared in 1963 and has been a key character in the Marvel universe ever since, especially as a member of The Avengers.

Strength: Tony Stark is an inventive genius whose expertise in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, computers, and engineering rival that of Reed Richards, Hank Pym, and Bruce Banner. He is regarded as one of the most intelligent scientists in the Marvel Universe. In addition, Stark possesses great business and political acumen. Iron Man possesses powered armor that gives him superhuman strength and durability, flight, and an array of weapons. Other weapons built into various incarnations of the armor include: the uni-beam projector in its chest, pulse bolts, an electromagnetic pulse generator, a defensive energy shield that can be extended up to 360 degrees, generating ultra-freon, creating and manipulating magnetic fields, emitting sonic blasts, and projecting 3-dimensional holograms. There are also suits built for other purposes such as taking on The Incredible Hulk and Thor.

X-Factor: Iron Man is cool as hell, is a ************* genius, and has the money to back up anything.

Iron Man is also one of the more versatile characters picked so far, as he can always adjust his armor for any situation. Also, you're right in saying he's never been more popular. You can thank Robert Downey Jr. for that.

That said, I've always found Tony Stark to be more compelling then Iron Man himself, but maybe thats just me. That said, still a great pick, especially in this round.

I'll do a little bit of explaining for my picks since I wasn't here to make them.

The Dr. Doom pick was easy for me as soon as Supes was off the board. He is probably the most popular villain there is, and if he isn't he's a close second or third. Doom is one of the most respected villains in all of comics, and he has rare popularity for a bad guy. People actually want him to win sometimes.

When it comes to strength, Doom is like a walking plot device. He is one of the most intelligent people in all of comics, he wears super strong armor, and he's a great sorceror. To beat Dr. Doom, you need a team of people. Even if you have a team, you still barely manage to beat him.

His duration is pretty clearly evident. He's been around for decades, and he will stick around for a long time.

The Green Lantern pick was about being versatile. He's pretty popular among comic fans, he's powerful, and Hal has stuck around for ages. He has been mentioned to have the strongest willpower of all the Lanterns, and he's one of the most experienced.

He has a movie currently being filmed for next year, and he has made countless appearances in cartoons throughout the years. He is one of DC's most recognizable characters, so he gives us a nice popularity boost.

His strength is incredible. He can do nearly anything if he puts his mind to it, and as mentioned before Hal has great willpower. He's called the greatest Green Lantern for a reason. If you need a GL to do the job, Hal instantly comes to mind as the most dependable.

It's hard not to like what has gone on so far. Some drafts I especially like:

APS: Deadpool is one of the coolest comic book characters ever created. Silver Surfer is solid.

Diabs: Wolverine and Iron Man are two comic book hero staples. Hard to hate that.

Broth: Looks like he's going for a planet destroyer theme. Doomsday is one of my favorite villains in comic book history. He is the only villain to ever *kill* Superman. Says a lot.

There haven't been any bad picks so far. A reach here or there, but the next few rounds are when we get into the meat and potatoes of this whole deal.

Speaking as an outsider, I'm totally impressed that people have shown restraint in picking The Sentry. He's as powerful as almost any character in comic book history, but it doesn't help the fact that he's hopelessly lame and uncool.

Also, Dr. Strange should have never fallen that far. He's both awesome and ridiculously powerful.

Only problem I see with Dr. Strange is popularity. While he is known, he is not as popular as hardly anyone picked before him or some people that are still left on the board.

Considering the draft is not based on powers alone I can see why he fell. I think some people are putting too much emphasis on cool, badass powers than fulfilling the whole criteria. If it was based on powers alone I wouldn't have picked Wolverine #4 overall and Batman would not have gone top 10.

I guess. I'd say that Batman's badass-ness and popularity probably double or triple anyone else I can even think of to draft, and that's being conservative.

Batman's a tough sell when guys who eat entire planets get taken after him, but I think we all understand why he goes early no matter what criteria you offer. Same deal with Morpheus.

Hrm, I don't even think it's close. Out of those 4, two of them made their name as a part of a team (Wolverine and Ironman) and let's face it, Superman hasn't been cool in a couple decades. His ridiculous powers are generally satired in the most famous DC comics of recent times and his own comic book stories have become almost unreadable esoteric voyages into Bizarro worlds and alternate dimensions

The only real argument I see is Spiderman, but if you're talking modern popularity, I still don't think it's all that close. It's probably a silly argument though.

I tried really hard to create categories that would offer some sort of equity between the different universes and different levels of powers these comic book guys would have. Also, I tried to emphasize that its the comic popularity and less focused on movie versions and such, although they undoubtedly play a role. That is why Batman is such a popular hero, and even though almost every single hero draft so far would wreck him in a fight, he was a completely legitimate top 5 pick.

http://www.worstpreviews.com/images/theflash.gif

Popularity: The Flash is one of DC Comics more well-known heroes. He has been a fixture in every version of The Justice League, starred in the cartoon, and had his own live action series in 1990. Most non-comic fans could even recognize him from how long he has been around (1940).

Strength: All incarnations of the Flash can move, think, react at superhuman speeds, vibrate so fast that they can walk through walls, travel through time and can also lend and borrow speed. Furthermore, all members have an invisible aura around their bodies that prevents themselves and their clothes from being affected by air friction as they move at high speed. He can harness even more abilities by using the Speed Force.

Duration: The Flash debuted in 1940 and has been one of DC's most popular characters ever since.

X-Factor: One of the more reliable and powerful heroes in the DC Universe whose popularity has been steady since the Barry Allen version of The Flash in 1956.

I select Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/uploads/11893/Gambit.jpg

Popularity: Far and away one of the most popular, if not the most popular (although recent years and several films have probably pushed Wolverine ahead of him) member of the X-Men, Remy LeBeau aka Gambit has always been loved for his charming Louisiana accent, affinity for women and playing cards, and a rather cool demeanor which is utterly hypnotic (in fact, its part of his powers!). He has been involved in several of the X-Men Animated series, in which he was an important and beloved character all in all. Based on comic fans, I'd say hes a top 3 X-Men in popularity.

Strength: While his strength has varied at times throughout the comics, mostly due to some tampering by Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse, Gambit has the ability to manipulate energy at an atomic level, particularly kinetic energy. He can "charge" items and the release of this charge results in a violent and deadly explosion. As we all know, his weapon of choice are playing cards, however he has been known to improvise and use any and all items to his avantage. His powers, at their full potential, allow him to convert his entire being into energy and travel through time by merging with the kinetic energy of the universe. He also possesses a hypnotic charm that allows him to exert a subtle influence over sentient beings, leading them to believe what he says and agree with his suggestions. On top of that, he's a master martial artist and skilled card thrower. He is a master thief and is bilingual. Hes definitely got the power to back up the attitude.

Duration: Another relatively young character, Gambit premiered in 1990, however he was immediately popular and has experienced more love and more importance during his 20 years then many X-Men have in double that amount of time.

X-Factor: Really, is there ANYONE in comics cooler then Gambit? His on again/off again relationship with Rogue has surpassed the Cyclops/Jean dynamic as the most popular in the series, and he oozes cool. From the comics to the animated series, hes been one of the biggest badasses that the X-Men franchise has ever seen. He's far and away one of the most dynamic, unique, and charismatic characters in the Marvel Universe.

- Strength - So, this is the question. Maybe he doesn't have mutant or alien powers, but if you can go toe to toe with Superman for 70 years, it means something. Luthor's intelligence and versatility are something I value as a strength. He has been the President, a business man, an evil genius, a scientist, and more. He comes up with unique ways to cripple Superman, and that isn't easy. Also, he is 2nd in intelligence in the whole DC Universe only to Brainiac [props to commie]

- Duration - Been around since the 40s? Very good.

- X factor (What makes them unique, cool, badass, etc.) - Anyone who doesn't say Luthor is bad ass is looney. Look at the picture above, that suit is awesome. Only problem with a guy like Luthor is he only survived so long because Superman is such a boy scout and refuses to kill him every time he gets a chance. If Luthor was going up against someone like, say...Deadpool :), he would most likely get shot, sliced, blown up, and made fun of every which way possible.

That said, at this point in the draft, hes an excellent pick, as hes a top 10 pick in 3 out of the 4 categories.

http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs27/f/2008/087/6/5/Super_Saiyan_2_Goku_by_XXXSpider_manXXX.jpg

Why Goku?

Popularity: Was the main character from the most popular anime and manga of all time. DBZ is huge in both Japan and America, so Goku gives us some international love. He's like Japan's Superman.

Duration: The DBZ manga came out decades ago, and it is still pretty popular to this date. Goku is both a comic and animated icon.

Strength: DBZ characters are stupidly powerful. When they were weak as hell they destroyed planets. After going Super Saiyan Goku could do a lot more than that. He would be like a god in the DC and Marvel universes.

X-Factor: He gives us a huge power player to let loose. We've got some intelligent people with experience on our team. Now we have a big time guy that could do major things. He's the ultimate versatile tool.

I select Norman Osborn, aka The Green Goblin

http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/77/388960-58139-green-goblin_super.jpg

Popularity: Arguably Spidey's most popular villain (really, only Venom gives him in a run for his money), Norman Osborn's popularity has grown exponentially in recent years due to the publication of the Dark Reign series, in which he is the primary protagonist and occasional leader of The Thunderbolts, a group of converted supervillains who are employed by the government. Norman's unstable nature, and his "crazy, not stupid" mentality have made him one of the more deadly and unpredictable villains Spiderman has ever faced. Needless to say, he's one of the more recognizable villains in Marvel, even spawning a few copycats and offshoots. For further evidence of his popularity, check the Wikipedia article on him and see how highly he ranked on many prestigious "Best Comic Book Villains" lists.

Strength: Even after his Goblin serum left him superhumanly fast, powerful, agile, and with a powerful healing factor strong enough to survive stabbings and close proximity explosions, Norman Osborn's greatest asset was his mind. Widely considered one of the smartest men in the Marvel Universe, his Goblin Serum only enhanced his intelligence to the point where has was able to surpass some other genius's like Tony Stark in the fields of technology and biomechanics. This allowed for the development of not only his superpowering Serum, but his highly advanced Goblin Glider and other weapons as well. Make no mistake, Osborn is more then capable of handling in his own in a fight with any hero (or villain, more recently) in Marvel.

Duration: With a publication history dating all the way back to 1964, the Goblin has been one of Spiderman's longest and most devastating foe's responsible for numerous atrocities in the web crawlers life including the iconic death of Gwen Stacey. He has most definitely passed the test of time with flying colors.

X-Factor: Norman Osborn is a highly complicated and incredibly dynamic character, not existing in the regular black and white binary universe so many comic book villains occupy. Acclaimed comic author Andy Diggle summarized Osborn best when he said "He's clearly fiercely intelligent and a natural born leader, with the ego and competitive drive to succeed against all odds. He also just happens to be crazy as a shithouse rat. I think the secret to understanding Norman is that he doesn't realize he's the villain. He thinks he's the hero. He truly believes that he deserves public adulation, and it bugs the hell out of him that so-called 'superheroes' are getting it instead of him."

http://www.tabletmag.com/images/features/feature_739_story.jpg

Popularity: Easily one of the most recognizable characters in all of comics and probably the most popular of the Fantastic Four has been a fixture in the Marvel Universe for decades. Most people know the phrase "It's Clobberin' Time!" which is The Thing's signature yell when he's about to unleash hell. Also comic relief in the two abominable movies but still it was more publicity for him.

Strength: As a result of a mutagenic effect due to exposure to cosmic radiation, the Thing possesses high levels of superhuman strength, stamina, and resistance to physical injury. His strength has continued to increase over the years due to a combination of further mutation and special exercise equipment designed for him by Reed Richards.
He is capable of surviving impacts of great strength and force without sustaining injury, as his body is covered with an orange, flexible, rock-like hide. He is also able to withstand gunfire from high caliber weapons as well as armor piercing rounds. It is possible to breach his exterior however, and he does bleed as a result. The Thing's highly advanced musculature generates fewer fatigue toxins during physical activity, granting him superhuman levels of stamina.
Aside from his physical attributes, the Thing's senses can withstand greater levels of sensory stimulation than an ordinary human, with the exception of his sense of touch. His lungs possess greater efficiency and volume than those of an ordinary human. As a result, the Thing is capable of holding his breath for much greater periods of time.

Duration: First appeared in Fantastic Four #1 in 1961, the Thing has been a popular character almost since his inception and should stay that way for quite a while.

X-Factor: While the Thing has battled many adversaries over the years in included The Hulk, despite the disparity in their strength levels, The Thing has never shied away from the fight. Yet, despite the sense of humour, there’s a tragic element to The Thing, as well. Trapped – for the most part – in a body he loathes (he was mutated in the cosmic ray storm that created the FF), Ben Grimm can be prone to bouts of depression because he longs to be his old, normal self so that he can be with the woman he loves the most. One of the most complex characters in comics that people can feel real sympathy for.

A Perfect Score

Just to clarify, X-Factor isn't meant to be how they would work on a team or how they fit into your plans. I use the term X-Factor to describe what makes that character unique and not just a stereotypical, run of the mill comic character. What makes them cool? What makes them badass? What makes them memorable? Thats what I mean by X-Factor, not like...what influence they would have in the comic world. Its what creates the lasting impression.

I select Nightcrawler

http://www.captionbox.net/images/bamf.jpg

Popularity: I'm honestly shocked to find him here at this pick, and I figured he would of been gone long ago. One of the most popular Xmen, especially in recent years due to his inclusion in the animated series and a solo series that saw us exploring alot of his background and his religious nature. He looks cool, acts cooler, and above all has an awesome power. Im really really shocked to see him here this late in the draft.

Strength: Nightcrawler's teleportation, while being one of the coolest looking powers in all of Marvel, is also incredibly useful. It was explained that while teleporting, Nightcrawler actually travel's to a separate dimension which he moves through almost simultaneously before reentering ours. Hes capable of teleporting himself and a predetermined additional mass up to 2 miles in any direction, as long as he can see or has already seen the place hes teleporting. Used in an offensive or defensive manner (teleporting leaves people who arent used to it disoriented and occasionally unconscious), Nightcrawler's ability allows him to attack in a variety of unpredictable ways. Furthermore, his mutation also grants him superhuman speed, agility, flexibility, stamina, balance and dexterity. Also, he possesses a prehensile tail that is strong enough to hold and skillfully maneuver a sword. Nightcrawler is one of the deadliest swordsman in the Marvel universe. He can also disappear in shadows and cling to walls like Spiderman.

Duration: Original publication occured in 1975, and hes been a steady member of the X-Men and occasional member of other teams during his tenure as a Marvel character, even anchoring his own supernatural storyline for a time.

X-Factor: Well I don't really think it needs explaining, hes one of the most visually stimulating characters in the Marvel universe. His powers look awesome when put into use, and he has a rich and fulfilling backstory. He's also one of the more contradictory characters in the Marvel universe, as his highly religious nature is in direct juxtaposition to his demonic looks and heritage. Also, while he was portrayed in the films as a stoic character, in the comics hes actually quite lighthearted and a noted practical joker with an affinity for pirates and a swashbuckling lifestyle.

Rogue

http://www.marveldirectory.com/pictures/individuals/r_1d/rogue/rogue3.gif

Popularity/Recognizable: Rogue is definitely on the more recognizable side of the X-men. Great personality, good back story, and people seem drawn in by her as the complexity of her character can often mirror human emotions.

- Strength: Can it even be defined? She can fly, has super human strength after taking both Ms. Marvel and the Kree's powers is awesome. A super hero who drains and absorbs the life she touches is not only deadly, but leads to a ton of scruples. She can also get the powers permanently at some risk.

- Duration: Not quite up to snuff with my others, since 1981ish.

- X factor: I think the complexity of the character is such an X-Factor. No human contact really requires sacrifice by Rogue and has led to plenty of disappointments in her life. The strong character really reflects human emotion, and the times when we all cannot be with the ones we love for whatever reason. She draws people in as well as kicking ass.

- Strength: A pure genius in the Marvel world, along with his bad ass mechanical appendages. You have to love that about Doc Oc.

- Duration: Another team member from the JFK era. Top notch.
