"At this point I don't think I'm going to play," Schobel told the Buffalo News today. "I'm not ready to say I'm retiring but it's in the Bills' hands."

Schobel left the door open a crack when he said he might come back during the season if the Bills need him, but said he has no plans to attend any more organized team activities, minicamp or training camp.

So, in other words, he's moving on and the Bills will have to move on without him.

"But if they want to move on, I'm fine with that," said Schobel, who ranks second on the Bills' all-time sacks list behind Bruce Smith.

Pretty underrated player.

Pretty classy way to leave IMO. Puts the Bills in a good position where they can move on without maybe some bad press for cutting him but they know they can essentially keep him as a backup without keeping him on the roster or paying him unless they use him.

Not sure how he would have fared in the new scheme, probably not too bad, but this is a blow considering he was coming off of a great year and was probably our best player on defense (the team?) last year.

Take it however you want, but Schobel was the ultimate Bill of the past decade. A very reserved guy but a force on the field. I will greatly miss him as he has always been one of my favorite players in all sports. While his career is ending sooner than I had hoped, I'm glad to see him go out as a career Bill. He probably deserved better than us, but I loved every minute of his time in Buffalo.

He had 10 sacks last year, just more proof of how underrated he was.

Always reminded me of Aaron Kampman.
And now in a similar position as Kampman was last year changing into a 3-4, which didn't suit his skillset.

I can't believe how many teams now have gone to the 3-4. I was an advocate of it last year for my Packers, but now it's like, what, 60% of teams playing a 3-4?

Shame. He never got to the playoffs.

He didn't remind me of Kampman at all. Schobel was a much more fluid pass rusher and was much worse against the run then Kampman was, although I do feel that Schobel was underrated in all aspects. One of the better pass rushers of the last decade and a player I always enjoyed watching. I was actually looking forward to seeing him in the 3-4, and I thought he could of been a real mentor to Maybin.

Agreed. Hopefully they keep him around to rub off on Maybin and provide a smart guy to ask for help. Dude was such a hard worker and smart pass rusher I think he's got a future in coaching. I mean dude played around 240 and was not only a very good and consistent pass rusher, but he was able to use leverage well enough to be a good run stopper as well. You know a guy like Maybin could learn a lot from him.
