Not one of the guys I would have expected to go thru $50+ million and end up filing for bankrupcy.

I read somewhere that he was having money problems, and could even be looking for a spot on a roster somewhere this upcoming season to help pay for his debt instead of retiring, but I didn't know he was in the hole that much.

Kind've surprising. He was fun to watch with the Jags and Skins. Hope he gets out of this rutt. And to be fair, he apparently got hit really hard by the whole housing/loan crisis (like many people did), so this shouldn't really be a bad reflection on him. Certainly not positive, but understandable - it's not like he squandered it away.

Gebus, worst time possible time to start a real estate development. Sounds like he footed the bill on their loan and that went to ****.

Brunell was my favorite player growing up before I saw Peyton at UT. Always will be a fan of him. Hope everything goes well.

I almost became a Jags fan because of Mark Burnell, he was so awesome around 1997 and that's when I started to get into football, but I was pulled to the dark side. I hope everything works out for him.

Blah, I still haven't heard a good explanation about how he lost almost $50 MIL.
A lot of folks got creamed in the real estate crash?? Was Mark attempting to build a 100 unit condo??

A friggin mall?? I don't get it.

The artcile said he made roughly $52 million over 10 years, so in that time you have to figure he bought a nice house, cars, or whatever. Its not like he had $50 million in the bank last year and lost it. He could've spent $40 million over the corse of his career and just lost the final $10 million during his real estate indentures.

Good point. But I know that Joe Gibbs gave him a $30 mil guaranteed contract to play for the SKins, so I always thought he had a mint in the bank.

I'd be nearly suicidal if I lost that much money!!

Having millions means you don't ever have to do anything reckless ever again in life to make money.

Sit on that cash, take a job doing what you REALLY enjoy, live off the interest, and stop trying to be the next Donald Trump/Bill Gates.

I heard a stat, 80% of NFL players within 2-3 year after they retire they are broke. They must be advised how to use that money wisely. Depreciating assets like cars, jewelry, etc are not the logical purchases. At least with homes they can grow in value. Real estate schemes that these guy drop millions in are stupid mock hedge fund type programs. They just need touy a millio in rental proeprties and have that as income for years. it is that simple.

I thik the rookie forums and off season radio boo camps are steering guys in the right direction for what to do with the money and what you can do after football.

I don't feel bad really. You make millions and millions of dollars during your career and somehow manage to go bankrupt. The majority of people would be lucky to make half what some of these guys make over their lifetime. Yet most seem to get by without filing for bankruptcy. If you really have that poor of money management especially with that much money I don't feel bad.

Sucks for Mark Brunell. He always reminded me of a poor man's Steve Young during his playing days. Always liked him as a player. Hopefully he gets out of this mess. Seems like everyone becomes a slave to debt sooner or later though whether you're rich or poor.

Terrible break for him. I can tell you that I won't miss him when he finally parts company with the Saints.

Wait, didn't Brunell get a ring last year as a backup?

Well Brunell signed with the Jets now so little by little maybe the old man can chop off the big debt.

He is still good as a placekick holder hopefully right? He cannot be any worse than Kellen Clemens in this department.

He did go bankrupt despite having lots of millions in his pockets. Don't underestimate his failing capacities.

Does he regard the ball in the fashion one might think of some kind of strange alien artifact?

No?

Then he'll be a better backup than Kellen Clemens.
