First let's establish what the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award is. A lot of people always seem to get confused. Here is a nice blurb from wikipedia.com that clearly states what the award encompasses:

The NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award has been given out after every season since 1972 (except for 1985) by Pro Football Weekly. The player named Comeback Player of the Year shows perseverance in overcoming adversity, in the form of not being in the NFL the previous year, a severe injury, or simply poor performance. Beginning in 1992 the Pro Football Writers of America and Pro Football Weekly combined for their awards, including the comeback player of the year, and it continues to this day.

Usually the award is giving out to players who rebound from injury. I think this should be the defined rules for all recipients, but obviously this isn't the case since Drew Brees won the award in 2004 for finally breaking out.

In any case, my guess for the award is probably Brian Urlacher.

With Rex Ryans D he can make a scrub look like a pro bowler. If Gholston does nothing w/ Rex as his HC he is doomed

I think Leon Washington has a good chance at it. I'd like to see him win it, he seems like a good guy.

Tory Polamalu only started five games last year. He was plagued with leg injuries.

What I hope - Derek Anderson

What I think - Brian Urlacher

Urlacher would be sweet, mainly because I don't want it to be Bob Sanders or Polamalu because they are on rival teams even though I really like them both. They are just both so important to their teams that if they have good years their teams will be so much better, so I'll go with the NFC guy in Urlacher (who I am a fan of as well).

I just think it would be good to see a healthy Urlacher and see how dominate he can be again. Its been 3 years since he has been complete healthy?

He'll have a 1000 yard season. Mark it down.

I would go with Urlacher, but I am going to break his leg before the season, so count that out. I think it is gonna be EJ Henderson (homer).

Urlacher since the bears are likely to get a little bit more spotlight this year.

The media has a hard on for the colts and if Sanders can remain healthy (he won't) he'll be a big chance too.

If Delhomme doesn't **** the bed (he will) he could come through.

Shawn Merriman might surprise people and do well this year.

Ronnie Brown and Polamalu are in the mix too I suppose.

Isn't he starting the year on the PUP? There's no way he's gonna be ready for the start of the season...

Didn't you know sucking for your entire career and then breaking out is greater than coming back from Hodgkins Disease and making the Pro Bowl?

Nobody knows actually. Mike Reiss, who's a very respected Patriots beat writer, thinks that Welker will start the year on PUP. Others don't think that. Personally, IDK what to believe. Even if he's ready (85 - 90 %) he might be put on PUP by BB just so BB can see what he has in Edelman, Tate and Price. I wouldn't put that past him. Then Welker would be unleashed in week 7 and probably still have a 100 catches.

But overall my gut feeling is that he's on the team in week one and playing hard as always. He did a little work in minicamps and looks to be ready for training camp.

Mark Fields didn't earn that Pro Bowl nomination. What he did was amazing and I give him the utmost respect to returning to the NFL, but he sure as hell didn't play at a Pro Bowl level that season.

Honestly, both Fields and McGahee were much better candidates than Brees.

I'm surprised no one said Alex Smith yet. He seems to have a lot of supporters.

I'm going with Santana Moss. I think he breaks out with a real qb throwing him the ball.

Steve Smith on the Panthers.

Can't see him being quiet 2 years running.

4 years in with only two starts spells injury for the now full time Kolb. Not everybody can be Aaron Rodgers.

Can he be a nominee for this award? I figured the award was missing most of the last season, while he missed the playoff game only. I don't know much about the award just wondering.

With an ACL tear at the end of the season, he would likely miss most of this season so if he manages 100 catches and 1000 yards, I think he very well could win it.

I'm not 100% sure though, but I've heard his name mentioned before by people who should know.

To be fair he REALLY sucked.

To be fair, he was two years into his NFL career with an absolutely awful team. He was on the normal progression path for a young QB, and broke out in his third year. He wasn't coming back from anything.

Alex Smith hasn't had anything to come back from. If anything he could have a breakout season, not a comeback.

Paranoidmoonduck

Considering the dubious nature of the award, Alex Smith might as well be considered as a candidate. If he had a really strong season in SF, he'd be just as strong a candidate as Drew Brees was (which is to say not at all for this award).

I'll vote for Merriman, a whole nother year to recover from knee surgery he should regain some of his explosiveness. No way all his sacks were from roids right?

losing 2 of the 3 starting DL in the last two years and not replacing them with equal or near the talent they were isn't going to help him. Plus one of those guys where the NT

I'm going to pick Chad Pennigton because it seems like he wins it every other year
