Up to date: August 15th.

Here is my 53 man roster prediction (I used the patriots last year roster to help determine how many of each position make the team)

QB

Starter: Tom Brady
Backup: Brian Hoyer

---

WR+RB

Starters: Randy Moss (WR), Wes Welker (WR), Brandon Tate (WR), Laurence Maroney (RB), Kevin Faulk (RB)

Backups: Taylor Price (WR), Julian Edelman (WR/RB), Fred Taylor (RB)

---

TE

Starter: Rob Gronkowski

Backups: Alge Crumpler, Aaron Hernandez

---

OL

Starters: Sebastian Vollmer (RT), Matt Light (LT), Stephen Neal (RG), Dan Koppen (C), Dan Connolly (LG)

Backups: Ryan Wendell (G/C), Rich Ohrnberger (G/C), Mark LeVoir (T), Eric Ghiaciuc (C/G), George Bussey (G/T)

---

DL

Starters: Gerard Warren (LDE), Vince Wilfork (NT), Mike Wright (RDE)

Backups: Myron Pryor (DL), Damione Lewis (DE), Ron Brace (DL)

---

LB

Starters: Jerod Mayo (ILB), Tully Banta-Cain (OLB), Brandon Spikes (ILB),
Marques Murrell (OLB)

Backups: Gary Guyton (ILB), Dan Fletcher (ILB), Tyrone McKenzie (ILB), Jermaine Cunningham (OLB), Rob Ninkovich (OLB)

---

DB

Starters: Leigh Bodden (CB), Darius Butler (CB), Devin McCourty (CB), Brandon Meriweather (FS), Pat Chung (SS)

Backups: Terrence Wheatley (CB), Kyle Arrington (CB), James Sanders (S), and Brandon McGowan (S)
---

K: Steven Gostkowski
P: Zoltan Mesko
LS: Jake Ingram

---

Bubble (3 spots remaining):
Buddy Farnham (WR)
Jonathan Wilhite (CB)
Bret Lockett (FS)
Sam Aiken (WR)
Matthew Slater (WR)
Sammy Morris (RB)
Benjarvus Green-Ellis (RB)
Pierre Woods (OLB)
Eric Alexander (ILB)
Darnell Stapleton (G/C)
Derrick Burgess (OLB)

Potential Practice Squad:
Ted Larson (G/C)
Thomas Williams (ILB/FB)
Zac Robinson (QB)
Carson Butler (TE)
Rob Meyers (TE)
Rod Owens (WR)
Darnell Jenkins (WR) (not 100% sure of his eligibility)
Terrence Johnson (CB)
Sergio Brown (SS)
Kade Weston (DL)
Darryl Richard (DL)
Kyle Love (DL)
Brandon Deaderick (DE)
DeAngelo Willingham (CB)

IR:
Nick Kaczur (G/T) [unofficial as of now / possible PUP]
Josh Barrett (SS)
Ty Warren (DL)
Torry Holt (WR)

IDFK:
Logan Mankins (G) - RFA

Final Note: This roster 'cuts' Mankins, Brace (could be IR'd), and Burgess so if/when they return someone else will be pushed onto the bubble/out.

----------------

My thoughts after making this:
1. The Patriots should get more serious with Logan Mankins. Either sign him or trade him because they could use a DE or OLB.

2. OLB could use a starter but has decent depth. So could the DL.

3. Point 3 has changed. Ron Brace is still mysteriously not available for practice.

4. No longer relevant. Holt went to IR.

5. Benjarvus Green-Ellis is probably my favorite bubble member.

6. Fred Taylor could also be on the bubble (increasing it to 5), but that would mean that at least 2 of the 5 spots would be RBs likely.

7. The contract situation with Randy Moss, Matt Light, Logan Mankins, and pretty much all of the running backs leaves the team with 4 or 5 major holes in the off-season: OLB, RB, #1 WR, DE, and OL (G/T). With 4 top 64 picks next year, the Patriots seriously need to invest all 4 into those spots.

Ah s***.

Ty Warren is now being rumored to be hurt badly too.

Terrence Wheatley seems to be ahead of Jonathan Wilhite and two players have been released and two new players have been added.

Changes made to compensate.

Warren out for the year. :(

edit: I bump this (and maintain it) to show what the roster currently looks like. I try to keep it as accurate as possible, though I am not Bill Belichick nor do I claim to read his mind.

That looks about right, RoP. I'd have Ninkovich making the roster and Woods getting cut, but that's about it.

Edit: And Law Firm instead of Thomas Williams, since Morris and Law Firm both can play FB.

I'd rather keep BJGE then Morris or taylor at this point. Also, I'd like to trade Sanders somewhere, I think at this point even with his knowledge that we have better play makers at the position.

i saw we trade mankins to a team like the steelers who are in obvious need of oline for either a pick or someone like ziggy hood...BOOM!

Roster changes:
Holt to IR
Marques Murrell to starting OLB, demoting Ninkovich
added Derrick Burgess to the OLB (bubble) group
Added Ron Brace back (DL - backups)
removed Ross Ventrone (S) and added Buddy Farnham (WR)

I'd love to have Ziggy Hood, but the Steelers are not going to give him up for Logan Mankins. Hood is younger and plays a more important position.

Pierre Woods is not making this team. He's way down on the depth chart at this point. He's behind TBC, Murrell, Cunningham, Burgess, and probably Nincovich and maybe Dane Fletcher (ILB).

Dane Fletcher is the best coverage linebacker on the team. If he can play STs he'll definitely make the team as a dime backer. He's a name to keep an eye on.

The RB position is awkward because all of them are cut-able. Any of them could make the team. I really don't know who to pick (outside of Faulk).

As for Sanders being traded, I still think that's a very real possibility. The DBs are stacked and we could use depth or starters just about everywhere else on the D and at RB. Mankins and Sanders could be on the block for the right price.

Woods is one of the best special teams players on the team - he has an edge over someone like Ninkovich to make the team. Fletcher has a chance to make the team but I think it's an uphill battle, although like you said, if he can produce on special teams he has a chance. Sanders won't be traded - he's way more valuable to New England than another team.

Eric Alexander and Taylor Price will be on there somehow. That's a lot of OLs considering the versatility most of them provide (Connolly is G/C, Larsen is C/G/T, Ohrnberger is G/C...). Probably make a couple cuts from that group to make room for Alexander and Price.

That DE group is a bit too green as well. I imagine they'll keep Lewis. Sergio Brown becomes a numbers casualty and they'll try to sneak him on the PS.

I have him on injured reserve, but if they don't decide to do that, I think they'll probably keep him. It seems like he has a very long way to go though.

On my 53-man projection, I had included Rich Ohrnberger and Ted Larsen, who have been cut. It seems like Ryan Wendell will be making the team, seeing as all those guys had been competing for a job on the interior of the offensive line. If I had to venture a guess on the other, I'd say Taylor Price makes it without going to IR. It also appears that Quinn Ojinnaka won't count against the 53-man roster because of his suspension, so there should be another spot as well. If the team gives the other spot to a veteran, they guarantee their contract for the year, so it seems like they'll probably keep an extra young guy.
