Anyone else going to be at the game tonight?

We could not ask for a better opponent for the 3rd pre-season game...we'll get a great idea of what we've got and what we lack

I hate that it's on a Thursday this week. Don't know how much of it if any I'll be able to watch.

Secondary caught off guard while they were trying to communicate. That's what the preseason is for

Burnett and Raji making nice plays back to back. Great to see

Nice push by the Dline on that 3rd down

Lookin forward to seeing Zombo get some extended action tonight, as well as seeing Mike Neal. The young corners will also get a good test from this Colts offense

don't care about end result...its preseason, just want to see no injuries

Rodgers started slow but looked very sharp. Let me be the first to make this ridiculous prediction: Aaron Rodgers throws for 5,000 yards.

Hard to gauge where our defense is with Matthews, Hawk, Jones, Jenkins out, but it hasn't looked very good. None of the corners looked good.

Zombo is a roster lock.

Very interested to see what we do with our five tightends.

I kind of didn't notice that we scored 59 points.

Keep Finley, Havner, Crabtree, Quarless. Try and trade Lee or cut him.

- I don't like any of our RBs behind Grant and Jackson. It's unheard of, but I'd rather keep our three FBs and go with just two running backs. I don't think there's anyone worth keeping. It's not like we'd use him that much anyway. Grant gets the vast majority of carries, Jackson pretty much gets whatever is left. Use Kuhn as the third RB if we need one. Should one of them get hurt then pull one up from the practice squad. That almost certainly won't happen, but we don't have a third running back that deserves a roster spot.

Bedard's pregame "Road to 53" has us only keeping two runnningbacks now, and I'd actually be completely on board with that.

I haven't liked any of his projections overall.

This is what I like

QB (2): Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn
RB (2): Ryan Grant, Brandon Jackson
FB (3): John Kuhn, Korey Hall, Quinn Johnson
TE (4): JerMichael Finley, Spencer Havner, Tom Crabtree, Spencer Quarless
WR (4): Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones, Jordy Nelson
OL (10): Chad Clifton, Bryan Bulaga, Scott Wells, Josh Sitton, Mark Tauscher, Daryn Colledge, TJ Lang, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Jason Spitz/Marshall Newhouse (if we can trade Spitz or not)

DL (6): Cullen Jenkins, BJ Raji, Ryan Pickett, Mike Neal, Jarius Wynn, Justin Harrell
LB(8.): Clay Matthews, Nick Barnett, AJ Hawk, Brad Jones, Brandon Chillar, Brady Poppinga, Desmond Bishop, Frank Zombo
CB (6): Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Brandon Underwood, Pat Lee, Jarrett Bush, Sam Shields/Al Harris (Harris probably on PUP)
S(5): Nick Collins, Morgan Burnett, Charlie Peprah, Will Blackmon, Derrick Martin, (Bigby on PUP)

If we keep Spitz, would you still want EDS over Newhouse?

GB12
08-26-2010, 11:09 PM
It's not ideal because of the positions, but Dietrich-Smith is better right now and he isn't practice squad eligible. Newhouse probably would slide through waivers and we could keep him on the practice squad.

And really position isn't that important when you figure that no matter what they're the last guy that'd go in. Colledge, Lang, and Spitz would all go in before either Dietrich-Smith or Newhouse. We'd shuffle around the line somehow to get those three in first no matter who goes down.

If Ted can get us a 6th round pick for a long-snapper a couple years ago, anyone think he can get something for both a TE and OL? How about a FB?

The league is well-aware that these guys can help their rosters. Most teams if not all. Sure we might have to cut the guy, but then they are just praying they can sign the guy.

I'd like to see Ted trade Donald Lee or Crabtree for whoever fetches the most, and trade Hall or QJ if either fetches anything, and then trade Spitz.

Ideally, I'd like to see a servicable CB and OLB.

Now, onto the game tonight: Injuries:

It seems nothing too serious, thankfully, and hopefully.
Pack lost cornerback Brandon Underwood to a shoulder injury, defensive lineman Jarius Wynn to a concussion and linebacker Desmond Bishop to a hamstring injury.

About the game, things that not everybody noticed:
-WR Patrick Williams looked great. He had 2 key nice catches with Flynn, at least one was for a key 1st down & I think both were.

-Graham Harrell looked good. Admit it, he looked better than the rookie Aaron Rodgers did his whole first preseason. Graham led the team on a nice long scoring drive with some nice passes, and with the 2nd unit OL and all the scrub WRs.

-Matt Flynn looked good and perhaps raised his value to the point that we might see another Mark Brunell or Matt Hasselbeck trade in the future.

-I like Kregg Lumkpin and wish he could make the team, but it's very unlikely.

-Lower WR's looked good. Cherry with the PR for a TD was sweet. Shawn Gore looked okay too.

-We lit up the Colts for 59, and our deep threat and best WR Jennings didn't even suit up.

-I thought one Masthay punt was better than both Bryan punts. With our offense, they don't get much chance to prove themselves.

-Sam Shields, great hands as CB.... why can't he field punts. Cherry's hands on punts looked smooth. Easy two catches.

-Korey Hall, nice work on the muff recovery for a TD. Most of you don't like Hall much, but he's solid as a rock and works hard. TT & MM want to keep all 3 FBs. Quinn Johnson is the biggest, but the worst of the 3.

-Jaws and Tirico both picked Dallas to go to the Super Bowl, while Chucky picked the Saints. I want that to be highlited and bolded...... still no respect for the NFC North. Both us and the Vikings basically creamed Dallas last year, while the Vikings actually outplayed the Saints, dominated them, in NO but the turnovers handed the game to NO. I don't mind them not picking us, actually like it. But I think our division with Minny & us continue to get slighted.

-Big Play ZOMBO!

I'm not sure what you do with the FB's. Quinn has really been lookin good with the blocks, but he can't catch and hasn't stood out on ST's. Hall is definitely making the team because he IS good on ST's, and that is somethign the Packers need help in. They may or may not keep 3 FB's, and if they don't, I don't see Quinn making the cut. Kuhn does just as well and seems like he'll be receiving a bit more carries this season

If we'd go with just two running backs though we could afford a third fullback. Heck we did it last year even with three RBs.

I agree we'll probably see at least one trade. I thought I remembered the MNF crew saying there were a dozen scouts from around the league at tonight's game, and there were a lot of guys with good performances. With that in mind, it may also make it harder for some of our guys to clear waivers.

A trade for a runningback wouldn't surprise me.

Against Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, 2006 NFLDPOY Bob Sanders and gang, Rodgers finished 21 of 29 for 195 yards and 3 TDs, 0 Ints.
The effort actually lowered his preseason passer rating to a still-scorching 142.3.

In just over four quarters of play this preseason, Rodgers has completed 41 of 53 passes for 470 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

To weigh in on the fullbacks, I think we could save room for all 3. I hated it last year, but in all honesty all 3 guys bring value.
Kuhn has been very good so far, he should be our main contributor. Hall is a very solid special teamer, and Quinn is finally developing right. He had a couple sick blocks tonight, Id hate to let him go. If he improves on his catching and continues to make strides he could be the starter in a year. I don't want to let any of these guys go for free.

I like Quinn, he's a good player, same with the TE crew(Finley, Havner, Quarless, Lee, Crabtree) but I don't know if I see them keeping all 3 FB's and 5 TE's

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these guys traded for another legit OLB down the road

Quinn seems like he'd fit in more with a power running team. With this offense, having a guy like Hall who can catch passes out of the backfield is huge. Quinn is good, but he's just not the best fit for this sort of team, so thats why I think he gets either cut or perhaps even traded. Same with one of the TE's(Either Donald Lee or Crabtree IMO)

Sam Shields is definitely making the squad, and with him taking over on 1st team ST unit...I think we may finally be rid of some baaaaad bush(nobody likes a bad bush) so thats a win/win situation right there

I'm really, really not seeing too much from Pat Lee tbh, and Underwood, while showing flashes, is still pretty inconsistent. Won't be surprised to see the Pack trade for an OLB/CB or even more Safety depth using some of the pieces they have at certain deep positions. Bedard also speculated that he wouldn't be surprised if the Packers traded one of the punters, which is possible considering they were able to trade a LS the other year

I think that's the biggest negative to take away from this game and this whole pre-season. I agree and that was our biggest worry coming off of last year when we allowed 400 yards a game passing to the Vikings, Steelers, and Cardinals, and then drafted a total of zero CB's in the Draft. It seems that the only way we can get real good CB's is to trade for (Al Harris) or sign as free agent (Charles).
The young ones just don't seem to develop here.

I still think Tramon is only a decent nickelback, nothing more. We get hurt if he has to to start and matchup with good WRs.

I don't see us trading for a corner, because we're going to get another team's fringe player that won't be above Underwood or Lee anyway. I think the team likes these guys, they're just not quite there yet. Hopefully, Al Harris gets back soon and plays like he used to. I'm comfortable with our corners once you throw Al back in.

I also can't see us getting a safety with Burnett, Collins, Martin, Blackmon all going to make the team, Bigby returning eventually, and Peprah having a strong performance last night.

Matthew and Brad Jones need to heal up and apply heat from the outsides.

But this is (hopefully) the difference this year.
We know Farve hates heat up the middle.
Enter Mike Neal. And BJ Raji.

Guys don't get too excited about Raji and Neal. We probably have the worst interior OL in the league right now. Maybe the worst OL overall. I'm sure they will eventually be good but don't take last night's game as an indicator of what they're going to do every time.

Neal has looked impressive against more teams than just the colts this preseason.
