Unable to find a new NFL job despite making it to eight Pro Bowls, veteran center Kevin Mawae is retiring (http://ten.247sports.com/Article/Veteran-center-to-officially-retire-this-afternoon-497).

According to TitanInsider, Mawae, 39, has scheduled a 4 p.m. press conference to announce that he'll retire after 16 seasons.

Mawae has questioned whether his job as president of the NFL Players Association caused NFL teams to collude against offering him a job.

Mawae made the Pro Bowl last season.

I think the fact that he is 39 and probably wanted substantial amount of money had more to do with it. But this could also be a factor, being Prez of NFLPA. Troy Vincent had the same problem as well.

Titans should have brought him back to be a backup and a leader in the locker room. We need that plus our backup lineman suck.

It's not the money as much as him wanting to start and also not wanting to be away from his family. The Titans were willing to re-sign him at first, but only as a backup. I'm not sure if that changed at some point or not.

He was amazing for the Titans over the past few seasons though, and the OL didn't turn into the unit it has until he arrived. He really got it to gel, and was a team leader throughout. I was sad to see him leave, but there was no doubt he had lost a step. We had re-signed Eugene Amano a while ago, so it made most sense to play him at his more natural position at C and playing Leroy Harris, whose performance has pretty much forced the coaches to play him somewhere, at LG.

He's also a Strength and Conditioning intern at Vandy, so I bet he can get into coaching. Future Hall of Famer after several tries, in my opinion, but projecting non-OT offensive linemen is asking for failure.

I went to college with his younger brother Mark. Kevin is a stand-up individual and I have no doubt he will make the HOF.

According to many, as great a person as any one could be. A future Halll of Famer and a leader.

Agreed, he's a 1st ballot cinch for the Hall. Just wondering, is it possible to voted into the hoF as a LS ?

Mawae is not a 1st ballot cinch, in fact I'd be shocked if he did as interior linemen rarely get selected on the first go. Randall McDaniel didn't and Dermontti Dawson (with 6 1st team All-Pros to Mawae's 3) is still waiting. The backlog is getting very long too when you consider the likes of Dent, Dawson, Carter, Brown, Reed, Cortez, Sharpe. Haley, Doleman and Greene are on the waiting list.

The next 4 years also sees the following become eligible for the 1st time.

2011
Deion Sanders
Marshall Faulk
Curtis Martin
Jerome Bettis
Willie Roaf

2012:
Will Shields (12 Pro Bowls)
Bill Parcells

2013:
Jon Ogden
Michael Strahan
Warren Sapp
Larry Allen
John Lynch
Morten Andersen

2014
Marvin Harrison
Tony Dungy
Derrick Brooks
Zach Thomas

Mawae will be 1st time eligible in 2015 alongside Kurt Warner, Junior Seau, Isaac Bruce, Walter Jones, Edgerrin James and Orlando Pace.... Torry Holt too if he never plays again. Only a max of 5 modern era get selected each year. Once Dawson, Allen and Shields are elected Mawae will be the next 'interior lineman' on the waiting list but faces very stiff competition overall for places.

Is it possible to be voted to Canton as a LS? Yes. Its also possible that Giselle is going to dump Tom and move in with me instead. It will never happen. Look at the names above and tell me where Ethan Albright fits in?

I know a guy who went to school with Kev's bro Mark, and I've heard nothing but good things.
