we should make an android thread. Like discussing which apps we should get and what not.

Good idea. So here it is. Discuss apps, issues, phone recommendations etc.

I'd say to any android user, the first thing you should download is advanced task killer. And make sure you set it so that it automatically kills tasks every half hr. I have it set on safe mode at every half an hr, and it has dramatically improved my battery life.

I love my X and recommend it to anyone. I like the droids better than the iphone.

I haven't really gotten into any aps other than games, so if anyone has any suggestions post them please. I do already have advanced task killer and it's awesome.

For games, I recommend to everyone Angry Birds. **** is so addicting and there's like 300+ levels. Plus, we get it for free where as iPhone you have to pay for it. Suckers.

My gf just got one of these phones and it is the best thing ever.

Also, I know little to nothing about Linux, but isn't Android basically a stripped down version of Linux or something like that?

Hmm interesting. But it is the full version of Angry Birds? Because there's a beta version (free on both iPhone and Droid) and a full version (supposedly costs $ on iPhone, free on Droid).

Also, I downloaded the ESPN score zone thing because it was free and I can now just have a list of my teams on my home screen. Is there any aps better than this for just being able to quickly look at scores?

Not all of you will think this is cool, but I like it, and its pretty useful. There is an app, Rain Alarm, that notifies you with vibrations how close, intense, and how big an area of rain/snow/ whatever is coming towards you. One vibration means basically nothing, but it goes up to 5 on my phone, and that means its either raining on you, or about to. I like it because it keeps the weather from sneaking up on me. It also has a radar, with zoom and animation for you to watch if you want to look at an actual image as well.

I think you can usually sign a 2-year contract even if you're already on a contract. They just want to keep you on the contract...they don't care how many contracts you sign to get new phones...

Nah, I tried going into the Verizon store and doing that and they wouldn't let me.

Edit: After a 30 minute phone call with a Verizon rep...I got a manager's approval for 2 year pricing for being a "high value customer." Booyah.

I have the Google HTC G2.

I downloaded bunch of games ie: Mario 3, air traffic control, paper toss etc.

For the apps I have:

advanced task killer

barcode scanner: scans barcodes and looks it up on the internet.
yelp: favorite app lol, find good restaurants around you using your gps.
rotten tomatoes app: to see if a movie is worth watching
Where's my droid: if your phone is on silent or sound is low, you send a text to it with a specific keyword from another phone and your phone starts ringing on the highest volume.
Retro Camera: takes retro artsy pictures
FX camera: essentially the same as retro camera, has options like fisheye, polaroid and andy warhol.

that's about all i have right now.

Paul
11-28-2010, 02:57 PM
Advanced Task Killer is useless and was battery drain. Most android phones have there own task manager, just pop that on the homescreen and it'll work fine.

FX Camera is awesome though, love it. And Angry birds will suck your life away.

I never heard of the Droid Mecha. Anyone have any pics?

I wouldve went with the EVO 4G at the time had it been available on Verizon. I've heard you can get an X or an Incredible for cheap right now. A buddy of mine got an Incredible for 45 bucks.

But if you can wait for the EVO 4G, maybe you should wait. I don't know anything about the Mecha either.

But if price is a valid concern for you, hell, go for an X or an incredible. They're both amazing phones.

I had the same problem. I thought I turned on vibration for texts, but apparently like "Notifications" or whatever =/= texts.

So I had to open my list of texts, hit the setting button, and then under there you can turn on vibrations or whatever. You just have to do it through like the actual text screen, I believe.

Yea, that's the one thing I found annoying to start was that most phones I had would have one giant settings menu for everything. With Android, it's like each ap or whatever has its own settings menu. I guess it makes more sense, and is similar to a computer in that way, but it's just like going from phones before it takes a little to get used to.

But now any time I get/open a new ap, I immediately hit the settings button to see what's in there haha.

Yeah, I've discovered that myself, heh. I'm loving the phone though. I use it for GPS all the time with Google Navigation. Hoping that it becomes a little more reliable, but otherwise it's been great.

I'm waiting for them to regulate the Android Market a little more, though. Right now it's just too crazy and people are pricing games all over the place. One thing I like for my iPod is how the vast majority of games are all 99 cents. Plus you don't have to worry about getting viruses and such.

I'm dead serious when I say my Droid X changed my life. I can't imagine life without this thing.

If you're a city guy, I highly recommend downloading the Yelp app and the open table app. Both of those apps are so awesome if you go to restaurants with your girl or whatever. Open table lets you make reservations on the spot it's soooo good to have especially in NYC.

Another must have for New Yorkers is the Subway/Train app that gives you the locations of every terminal.

Vlingo is awesome for the car when you need to use your phone but can't type.

The movie app is great for buying movie tickets too. And all these apps sync in with Google Navigation which is also great.

If you like having a lot of apps on your homepage, download multicon, it lets you have smaller icons.

If you're into stocks, bloomberg and etrade are great apps. Zillow is great for real estate. I even have my Walgreens app for my prescriptions. And amazon app for buying stuff, ditto for best buy, and cnet scan for reviews on electronics. Just scan the barcode and it will give you a review of the product.

I work full time and go to school part time, and I downloaded a tape recorder that allows me to record lectures, then I just sink my phone to my auxillary line in my car and listen to the lectures on my way to work and back home, so I basically hear every lecture 3 times, so I don't even have to study that much bc I just remember everything. Pandora makes my ipod useless, and the mp3 player on my phone does as well.

I don't even need a calculator, I just downloaded a scientific calculator app.

I can do so much with this phone I don't even feel like I need a computer anymore. I use my phone for almost everything now. All my social networks, everything.

01-17-2011, 07:31 PM
Btw, I just downloaded Lookout, which is rated as the best antivirus by PC Magazine for the androids, does this mean I can get rid of my AVG antivirus, or should I just keep both?

I'd imagine having both would slow down my phone. So I rather just keep one. Who has what and what do you recommend?

Brent
01-17-2011, 07:35 PM
anti-virus on your phone is not needed unless you're downloading stuff in your web broswer.

01-17-2011, 09:18 PM
I don't know much about AVG for the android, but I know i use Lookout and it's been awesome. If you lose your phone, it tells you where it is via gps, and when you're near it, you can make a siren go off. Idk, i just think that's kind of cool, coming from someone who loses his phone a lot. It also backs up everything.

Sprint isn't bad but Verizon is obviously better if you can get a phone with them. Droid X is great, and is similar to the EVO. I'd go to Best Buy to check out some of the Droid phones if you can. Great way to see them in person and get a feel for them.

I have Sprint and an EVO and for the life of me can't understand why it seems to be the consensus that Verizon is better. Sprint is an outstanding company, I've never had any issues whatsoever with them, the pricing is much better than Verizon, service is great, I am beginning to get 4g here in Miami...etc. etc. Love me some sprint. The EVO is truly a life changing device (someone else actually used this term, and I agree; it's not hyperbole!) and can do absolutely anything any other phone out there (and much more) can do. Don't consider it a phone, consider it a laptop that you carry with you and is constantly on at all times.

Hey, Sprint has improved a great deal, but Verizon's coverage is much much better. You may not have issues where you live, but as njx points out when you travel or go out of city it can be really brutal. It's not to bad for those of us on the East Coast, but elsewhere you can get hammered.

Not to mention the 4G technology Sprint uses is vastly inferior to Verizon's 4G network. It's the sad truth, unfortunately, because Sprint does have better pricing, but it comes at the cost of coverage and an inferior 4G network.

bigbluedefense
01-21-2011, 09:59 AM
I'll give Sprint this: their prices are really really good.

My girl's best friend doesn't even have a phone. She lives in the city and has optimum wifi which is free for cablevision subscribers and is all over NYC, and she just uses her ipod as a phone.

I'm probably getting the Evo in may (its when my cancellation fee drops $100). Does anybody on here have one or know anyone who does, and what they like/don't like about it? So far from the looks of it, it'll either be the Evo or an Iphone, but I'd would be majorly disappoint in myself if I ended up getting an Iphone.

Why would you go to Sprint?

I've had T-Mobile for about 5yrs and they've always been decent but lately the service seems a little worse that usual. My dad has the G2 and he hates his service, few of my coworkers hate it as well. I'm still rocking the Dash since about 4yrs ago so its really time for an upgrade just not with T-Mobile imo.

I rly dislike AT&T and Verizon is a little too expensive for my taste. So that leaves sprint who I haven't too many issues with when my family carried it.

Is the Droid X still considered a nice phone? Anyone have it? I read a review on it but the dude made it pretty subjective and it seemed like he had his heart set on ripping it apart. My HTC incredible got stolen, and now they don't produce it anymore. The thunderbold wasn't offered by verizon for my plan, so they gave me the options of the Droid X, and droid 2 by motorola. I wouldn't get a Nexus S. I looked into that for myself before getting the phone I had presently...and it just doesn't look like it's all that great of one. I like the fact it's vanilla and the specs are decent, but aside from that...meh. Suffer for a bit till the new Evo.

Picked up a G2X last week from my T-Mobile upgrade and I absolutely LOVE it to death already. Granted, I've been using my G1 since it launched however many years ago, so it's a really huge jump for me....but even still. Enjoying all the games I can finally play on it...but not too much. I haven't checked the marketplace for like a year, so I was disappointed to see that there's still a shortage of good mobile titles, although there's a lot more there than there used to be. Might be

Thinking of rooting it on a day off this week and flashing Cyanogen. The new official 2.3 coming down the pipe is like twice the size of the experimental nightly of Cyanogen...and I'm not so big on bloatware and slowdowns. Not many other ROMS out there for it right now, besides some real meh looking stuff on XDA. Should be a real project for me to figure out this entire thing now...very different from the last time I did it. Easier, supposedly, but I'm totally out of touch with this entire Android scene stuff because my enthusiasm just died for my G1 last year.

Nexus S 4G. The 4 inch screen will take a week or two to get used to, but it will be the best decision you make.

edit: I owned the first Nexus One. I got one launch day. it ended up being the best decision I made. Maybe the Nexus S isn't the revolutionary step that the Nexus One was, but having live updates from Google before anyone is definitely a major plus.

It also doesn't have a ton of crapware that slows your phone down. I hate carrier phones for that reason.

Here are the apps/games that I've downloaded so far:

9 Innings Pro Baseball 2011 - My favorite game. Full season baseball game.

Angry Birds - I'm sure most of you have heard of this one already.

Guns - Just a vanilla target practice game with a wide variety of weapons.

AJailBreak - Surprisingly entertaining game. Only 5 levels for free version though.

Hungry Shark - Another surprisingly entertaining game. Also free version is limited.

Live Holdem Pro - Poker game. I've played it only once so far. It's ok.

Sudoku Daily - I like Sudoku, but I haven't really played this game much.

Unblock Me Free - Not a bad puzzle game.

MathManiac - See Unblock Me.

Lookout - Anti-virus. I haven't used it yet.

RingTone - I haven't downloaded anything, so I don't know about this one yet.

NYC Mate - Great transportation app. Obviously most of you guys don't need this one, only NYC residents and those that might be planning to visit.

Navaile Electrical Calculator - Good app for Electrical Engineers.

Entrepreneur Mobile - Financial articles.

If any of you are considering replacing an old android phone, instead of throwing it away, selling it, or whatever you can turn it into a wifi only phone with Groove IP ($4 in the market). It uses a Google Voice account (which are available in the US for free) and allows you to call in the US and Canada for free and outside for a few cents per minute.

No voice/phone plan required, just WiFi a wifi connection.

I don't know much about that phone in particular, but one thing I will tell you straight up that will save you a potential hassle; don't flash using Rom Manager(not even sure that's the preferred method for the DroidX) like most people do. It's a neat little thing and works well most of the time, but if something goes wrong during flashing you won't be able to get back to the recovery screen. Make sure you've got the ability to do that before screwing with anything.

Not sure that you haven't already seen this, but there's good information on all this stuff here;

I use the small Sense Analog clock available from the market. The standard sense analog clock that resembles the HTC clocks is just too big. It takes up half the screen, and I like having as many apps on my home page as possible.

Plus I don't like using multicon bc I like seeing the names of the apps, it looks cleaner.

The small sense analog clock is big enough plus gives you all the info you need, like % battery left, weather, etc. I love it.

http://images.macworld.com/appguide/images/android/165/8355550927785465/1658355550927785465_0.jpg

That's a picture of it. It comes it different colors. And this guy has a basic set up, without the weather and battery % etc. But that gives you a rough estimate of the size of the clock.

Nalej
07-02-2011, 03:53 PM
I'm opposite. I don't mind the big clock/weather widget size due to the fact that I don't like clogging up the entire screen with apps. I think that looks messy.
I do the same with my desktop though. The only thng I have on my desktop is the recycle bin and a weather widget as well.

http://www3.pic-upload.de/26.05.10/i8s7ux1i3pvd.png

This is basically what it looks like. Looks like it's stretched out sideways though.
My home screen looks like that but there's only 4 apps on it instead of the 6, like shown
The reason I like that clock/weather widget is because when you take your phone off of standby, the app creates the weather conditions on your screen. If it's raining, it'll create rain drops on your home screen, if it's sunny, the sun will start shining, windy... leaves will blow from one side of the screen to the other...
I think it looks pretty nice

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/10/06/possible-nexus-prime-specs-sneak-out-this-afternoon-this-isnt-the-galaxy-nexus/

The Nexus S released in early December and the Nexus One released in early January.

edit: If anyone cares, there are definitely two phones.

The only thing I really dislike about Swype is the fact that it damn near constantly puts commas in instead of spaces. It's pretty annoying. Other than that, it saves some time for me.

Also, LauncherPro is godly. Love the way my homescreen looks right now.

What clock is this?^

I downloaded launcher pro basically for that clock, but then realized that the clock wasn't part of launcher pro. I really just want the clock, don't care much for the rest of the interface.

the free versions aren't too bad, but you're way limited on options, unfortunately... i''ve downloaded that and i'm kind of waiting for it to be on amazon for free.

on the other hand, it's all of like, 3 bucks. if anyone other than me ever looked at my phone, that'd be tempting.

I have a feeling I'm going to drop the 3 bucks and get it. Damn you Verizon. I told myself I wouldn't ever pay for an app, but they sucked me in.

Never heard of it... Though I am downloading it now and going to give it a shot.

Also figured I would show you the other great smart phone that is coming out soon.

The new Moto Razr:

Looks comparable to the new Nexus. Claims to be the thinnest smart phone and has a carbon fiber back.

Looks pretty sexy but I am still buying the Nexus. I don't want any of that bloatware that Verizon puts on there.

InCar mode: It actively listens for your voice.
Say "Hey, Vlingo" and it responds "What would you like?" or something like
Text/email/navigate to whomever/wherever...
It'll also read you you're incoming text messages...
(Though, when it happened to me, I was in the middle of sending one out... not sure if it automatically reads it or if you have to request it to.

Like I said, I'm still playing with it myself

Also, I'll stick with my EVO 3D :)

Girlfriend's Kindle Fire arrived. I haven't gotten to play with it all that much, but it's really a neat little device from what I've seen already. It's hard to recognize it's running Android at times, but Amazon's modifications make for a pretty slick user experience and I really haven't found anything limited about it yet either. Already transferred a few things from my phone that weren't available on the Amazon App Store and they worked out great.

The only real downsides are things that I already knew about; 8GB of space kind of sucks, but Amazon is pushing the hell out of this cloud thing and it's integrated into the UI pretty heavily. We'll have to see how that works out, but I really have no right to complain seeing as I paid half of what similar tablets are priced at, although the Nook Tablet at $50 more looks to be a better value from a hardware perspective just for the storage factor.

...it's already rooted too. No ROMs out yet...and it'll be months before she'll let me **** with it, but it's probably going to end up happening if the community puts out anything worthwhile. Seeing how vanilla Ice Cream Sandwhich runs on it would be pretty interesting haha.

I'm annoyed that the US is stuck without a GSM Galaxy Nexus until they decide Verizon has had it long enough. I know I could get one from Europe, but it will also cost me in excess of $700.

Plus, there doesn't seem to be a reliable source to get it from right now. I imagine they will be out of stock soon and eBay prices will probably shoot up passed $1000. By the time Verizon's exclusive ends (probably March or June), it'll be in that period where I won't buy something (if a product has a 1 year shelf life, I won't buy it 6 months in)

I still don't get the point of tablets. They look cool and I'd like to have one, but I don't want to spend money on just a "toy".

I mean...why not just get a laptop? Isn't a small laptop/netbook infinitely better than a tablet? I'm not a tech junky, so I could be wrong, but that's my assumption.

ImBrotherCain
11-19-2011, 10:26 AM
Well I have a higher end gaming a Desktop so buying a laptop is almost pointless. For me the Tablet has a lot of perks that work in my favor. Not to mention with the newer Tablets coming out that have a gig of RAM or more and quad core processors thats where technology is headed.

First off In my line of work I need to show my clients different sheets and currently I am carrying around a briefcase with kits and binders. A laptop would work but with the minimal battery life they have now it could be a hassle. Not to mention they are much bigger than a tablet with on average considerably less battery life.

The other thing is that for me it would be to watch Sunday ticket or netflix on when the GF wants to watch something else. So for me it is a faster more glorified phone that I can actually enjoy watching video on or show clients.

The only thing that would be compared to a Tablet at this point is the newer laptops called Ultrabooks. Still a bit bigger than a Tablet and have a little less battery but anywhere from double to triple the price.

Netbooks are terrible don't ever waste money on them... EVER. There are phones that have double the processing power and just as much ram.

Would you recommend a tablet to a guy like me?

All I use my computer for is the internet, and microsoft office. I'm not a gamer, when I want to watch movies or tv I just watch it on tv, I use my phone as my mp3 player as I only listen to music in my car and mostly just use Pandora.

I have a work laptop that I do my reports on.

So basically, for me, I don't see any use for them. Unless I'm missing out? What practical applications could I use one for? It seems like for me, it would just be a toy to have.

Since I already have an android phone, I figure a tablet is just my phone with a bigger screen.

ImBrotherCain
11-19-2011, 10:44 AM
It more or less is your phone with a bigger screen. It going to be considerably faster but basically the same. You wouldn't have any practical applications with it. You already have a laptop which satisfies all your mobile computing needs.

It would just be a toy, easier to carry around. Less intrusive if you are sitting on the couch or in bed because you don't have to have an attached keyboard.

So I may not say that you need a tablet no but I might say it would be a quality investment if you got something like the Kindle Fire which at $200 is a solid android tablet that can do a lot of things for a cheap price.

Yeah, I'm typing on a netbook as we speak, and I bought it for 150 bucks off a guy from craigslist. It runs like a champ, had a friend clean it up and put malware bytes on it, and it does everything I need it to do.

Its light and portable too, I have no issues with it.

My little brother bought a new laptop that's really nice. It's not big like a laptop, but not small like a netbook, it's right in btw. I think that's perfect for me, bc the only knock I have on my netbook is that I can't play cds/dvds on it.

He bought his for 500 bucks, if I can get one on black friday for like 200 bucks, I'll be all over that.

that's absolute bull**** and couldn't be further from the truth. i can buy a netbook for $100 that's more powerful than an ipad, for instance, and to suggest that there are phones faster than all of them is completely dishonest.

How is that absolute ********... Most netbooks have a single core 1ghz processor with one gig of ram... They basically became obsolete when Tablets came out.

I should probably just do that then. Save some money.

I practically use my phone as a mini computer these days, everything I need is on there with apps, from banking, to youtube, facebook, twitter, movies, opentable etc.

The netbook is for surfing the net at home and my work laptop is for reports and documents. To be fair, I'm a fred flinstone. I'm still getting used to a world that's going away from paper. I'm so used to doing things the old school way.

let's take, for example, the first netbook i googled:

http://usa.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_1215N/#specifications

so you were incorrect in your assumption. in fact, nearly anything modern is running with at least a 1.6 ghz processor. i'd further suggest that the lack of a true keyboard or input interface on a tablet or phone is generally a massive disadvantage out of the gate. i think i said later that tablets work *really* well for an extremely small number of people, so i wouldn't presume to suggest that your usage is wrong, just that i find the general suggestion that netbooks are useless about as valid as i find suggestions to 'just buy a mac'.

I stand corrected... Most Netbooks before Tablets really took hold had the 1ghz single core processor and a gig of ram.

Now that Netbooks have really fallen out of the limelight in favor of Tablets I really haven't kept up on them. New Netbooks might actually be worth it.

Throw the iPhone out.

I don't know much about the Xperia one, but I've gotten my hands on a Galaxy S2 and it is a nice, smooth piece of hardware. Consistently tops out most cellphone benchmarks out there too, although the Galaxy Nexus is finishing close as well and has a higher resolution screen(although I hear it's not quite as vibrant as the Galaxy S2). So you might want to consider that one as well. Not sure what you can get on that one in terms of price.

My main concern with it is that it's got a single core processor, everything i've heard about it is that it can more than handle anything that's thrown at it these days. just worried that it might not be all that future proofed considering i'll most likely have this phone for 2 years or so.

Did something happen to your previous phone? Close to your upgrade date? Or are you wanting to buy a new just cause? I work for a cell phone company and depending on your situation they should be able to work something out to get you into a new phone without having to pay full retail. If you're close to your upgrade see if you can buy out the remaining portion of your contract to be eligible that day. Paying a prorated ETF would be better than paying full retail for a phone. Depending on how close you are and how long you've been a customer they should be willing to work with you a little bit. Can't guarantee it will work but this is the route I always take when calling into customer service to see what can done to help a customer out. Also if you go that route don't be a dick about it, being civilized about the situation helps out a lot.

I still use Vlingo and I love it. It's definitely not Siri by any means but I love Car Mode. It's all I use it for.
I use the Google Voice search for all the other voice activated functions on the phone.
(Setting alarms, calender updates, navigation, etc)
It allows for 2 way texting without ever taking your eyes off the road. I don't know how you could dislike that.
I don't see how that could be more dangerous than actually texting either.
(Unless it's from the playa playa perspective)

Actually, I place my phone on Car Mode when I'm playing MW3 since as soon as I look down to check my phone, someone kills me.
This has helped a little bit but not much. I still suck at MW3.

As the official U.S. release date still hangs in confirmation limbo, Verizon sources have told CNET that the Galaxy Nexus has once again been delayed by Verizon. Earlier this week we heard rumors that the Ice Cream Sandwich-enabled smartphone would land in the U.S. on Friday, December 9th. Those leaked documents were from an “authorized Verizon retailer” that said the selling of the device could not begin until 12/9/11.

CNET’s Verizon sources say that most Verizon stores thought that they would begin selling the Galaxy Nexus on Friday, but are now hearing that the release will be delayed.

How is that absolute ********... Most netbooks have a single core 1ghz processor with one gig of ram... They basically became obsolete when Tablets came out.

1 ghz means the internal clock operates 1 billion times per second. That's all.

Phones/tablets are running on low power ARM processors, while modern netbooks run on a low power x86 based Intel Atom processor.

The difference between the two is basically MIPS, pipeline length, ops per cycle (some processors can do 5+ ops per cycle, per processing unit), IOPS to disk drive, RAM access time, etc. Also, x86 processors have a much larger set of assembly operations that are far more well tuned (ie, you won't find any AES-256 op codes on an ARM processor, or any native AVX ones either)

All of which favor the netbook platform. Furthermore, you have a larger power supply (battery) in a netbook.

The "gigahertz myth" is worth Googling. The same things Steve Jobs said about Power PC macs vs Intel PCs is true about ARM SoCs vs Intel/AMD systems, today - that is, the clock speed numbers lie.

The only advantages I would say a tablet has over a netbook are the touch screens (they tend to be nicer than the **** in a netbook, if it even has one) and the software is custom for it so that it basically loads instantly and allows you to get to facebook much faster. If you aren't a general social network user (or a few other things), a netbook will blow a tablet away.

Consider this: if you have programs that work on a netbook and there are not necessarily free apps of them on the tablet (of equal or better quality), then you are getting a significantly worse experience. (like Photoshop has nothing even close to it on a tablet. Every netbook can run it though, even if it sucks badly.)

I like my phone to browse the web when it is inconvenient to get my laptop out, but I would never consider replacing a laptop (or netbook) with a phone.

Like I stated earlier... I was comparing newer phones to older models of netbooks.

I didn't realize how far they have come in such a short time. There was a long time where netbooks only offered a single core 1ghz processor and a gig of ram. Compare that to new tablets that have 1.2ghz quad core processors and a gig of ram.

But what you said later is true as well and I stated something along those lines earlier. Windows 7 is a bloated OS for the netbook (older model) to run efficiently. Tablets on the other hand have a OS that is designed to run with those specs and tends to act quicker.

You should just have to log in using the same gmail account you bought them with.

Yeah i figured it out, apparently the gameboy applications I had on my droid x don't work with ice cream sandwich. sad. The battery life is pretty awful, i was playing with it for maybe 30 minutes and it drained 20% of the battery, screen is almost all the way dark...

you can still pop the back case off and replace the battery, right?

Yeah, you can, but it'd be a hassle to have to charge two batteries, I'm going to call verizon and see if they have an extended life battery yet. Cause that would be awesome if my battery would last more than 4 hours.

The battery isnt fully charged out of the box... You should run it dead before fully charging it. Also 4g is always going to be a battery sucker.

I got it and it is orgasmic!

meh, i always keep two batteries with me, one fully charged as a backup. it's not that bad.

We can do that with our Xs, which is great, but the new 4g phones coming out dont let you pop the batteries out anymore.

Having an external battery charger and 2 fresh batteries in my pocket has been a life saver for me. I'm not happy with the new designs that won't allow us to do this anymore.

I'll just connect it to my wifi when possible, that is probably faster anyways.

It's not like it's easy to get out. but you can get the battery out and it's not internal like the droid razr.

edit: sorry for the double post

You can just shut off the 4g when your not using it... and 4g is pretty damn fast depending on where you are. Just did a quick speed test and pulled down 10mbs and 3 up

My 4g isn't very strong where ever i go in sioux falls. I also work for my internet provider and get my internet free. I have a 50mb down connection by 10 up. I'm pretty sure my cable internet is much faster than 4g.

I'm almost positive that you guys are probably in a larger market that Sioux Falls, SD.

yeah, i know friends on sprint even, were beating my comcast speeds. but comcast is a pile of crap in denver. i'm lucky to get 10/2.
I have FiOS. No tethered phone is going to keep up with that.

from what i've heard/read, 4g (at least on the LTE network), assuming a strong signal, is typically faster than most people's wifi (a big side benefit for me is being able to dump comcast for internet and just tether to my phone at home).

Max speed is 50x5 (down by up) I think. And that's with over 100 latency average.

My home is 50x5, but actually regularly hits 50x5 instead of averaging like 25x1 or something that LTE does unless you have a perfect signal. I average a latency in the 25-30 range.

So, my home internet is still significantly better than 4G LTE service, but it's kind of nice to have... if you don't mind the 70+ a month for a single service line.

Has anyone played with google music yet? you can store up to 20k songs in the cloud and access it on any android device. I'm uploading my itunes play list now.

It takes a while to upload, but it basically allows you to have everything on your device...

as long as you don't have a major restriction on your data limit.

You won't notice the difference between the cloud and on the phone, either.

I have it and have now gotten rid of my antiquated Zune... Yes I bought a Zune.

Personally I love it. I had it on my last phone (Samsung Fascinate) and it was slow, buggy and just a pain to use. Since I switched to the Nexus its great. No load time between songs, built in equalizer and just all around awesomeness.

As descendency said though if you have a data cap it can be a burden and take up a ton of it. Though Google Music does allow you to download songs from the cloud at any point. So you can download 5-10 albums at home on your wifi connection and never use your data.
