Nice 3rd period coming out and burying the Ruskies. Fixed all the errors from the first 2 periods. Also it's been so great seeing Ryan Ellis evolve from a specialist two years ago into a complete player. Easily the best player on the ice tonight.

USA did not look that great today. I'll take the win against a country that can always manage to be tough, but it was not the most inspired performance. Palmeiri looked ridiculously slick, but there was a lack of finishing on both ends.

Brock Nelson looked like he could've separated his shoulder while taking/effectively giving a hit. Lame.

Being a fan at this thing is sooooo much fun. I've gone superfan for the Swiss and USA. So many canadians, though. Fighting is imminent.

I'm sure the USA will be okay. First game, especially on home ice against a solid team, I'm sure they had tons of jitters. It's weird cuz the last 2 years Canada got to start with Czech Republic and Latvia to work the kinks out as the hosts. And this year we got Russia and y'all got the Fins.

I wanted to be upset when Canada scored there, but I couldn't be when I saw that it was Foligno. Then I realized that it was probably interference on the goal, but I still have too many reasons to like Marcus. Being Foligno's kid and a Sabre, he might get the biggest ovations out of anybody from a Canada-heavy crowd in Buffalo. He deserves them with how he plays.

Riecicky was awesome today. Grubauer bounced back pretty nicely, as well.

Germany's been a lot better since the first period against Switzerland, but games against Finland and USA probably won't be so nice. They could make for some good relegation round games, though.

Pretty excited for Swiss - Slovakia tomorrow. Both teams have been a little underwhelming, but this game should determine who goes to quarters and who goes to the relegation round.

Marincin is suspended for pretty much the whole tournament, and Hrasko got quite a few games, as well. Slovaks could be in big trouble if they lose this one, as they'd have to beat out a Germany team that easily could've already beaten them at full strength and either the Czechs or possibly Russia to avoid being demoted. I would like to see a Czechoslovakia battle, though.

Yeah eh. You'd think they'd have their bases covered by having not one, but TWO French Canadians as the goalies. But hell, Canada's goaltending overall has gone south. It used to be our best and most useless on an international level strength, since we had Brodeur, Luongo, Turco when he was good, etc. But then in the Olympics and last couple WJC tourneys, it's been our sole weakness.

The omission of Patrick Roy here is mind boggling.

I was thinking mid part of this decade when the three guys I listed were considered three of the best at the position all at once. After Patrick had retired. Although now that you mention it, late 90s early 00s with Roy, Marty, Cujo, and Ed Belfour is an even better example.

Having a goalie get hot is huge in this tournament. It lets less complete teams have a shot in one and done formats. A few weak goals and you're gone and hoping your next goalie is going to catch fire is a lot to hope for.

My dream would be for a real schedule to be played between these teams and then real playoff series. The "fans" here that bemoan the development of Canadian players would get to see just how complete their Canadian players are when stamina, toughness, and defence become real factors in the game. Just once I would like to see a team like the Swedes contemplate a best of seven against Canada.

Yeah, a hot goalie is huge. I think Lehner and Campbell are both better than the Canadian goalies right now, and that puts us in a tough spot considering the three of us are clearly the class of this tournament. It'd be nice if one of Roy or Visentin could do something but who knows.

That would be interesting to see. Really, our recent "struggles" in this tournament are due to how our players develop, but in the opposite way to what people would think. There are so many guys who would be wearing the Red and White in this tournament, except they're busy in the NHL. I mean, just look at the list of eligible players in the NHL.

Matt Duchene
Evander Kane
Taylor Hall
Tyler Seguin
Jeff Skinner

The USA is short Fowler I know, but anyone else? Even look back to last year, when the list of guys we lost to the NHL included Tavares, 51-goal scorer Stamkos and rookie of the year Tyler Myers. Anyone in Canada who thinks our players aren't developing enough is just blind to reality.

For this year, with the roster we have, I dunno if we'd beat the US or the Swedes in a 7 game series. Most years I'd say yes, but I'm not sure this one. I think we'd definitely wear them down as it went along, but I'm not sure our goalies would hold up.

A little thing for the game tonight. Should be a classic as always. I know Canada can win it, but so can the USA. I think it's really just gonna come down to goaltending in the end. Even though Visentin has an even better save percentage than Campbell(hooray for stats), he's looked awfully shaky at times in both games. If he can't shape up, the Americans are gonna make him pay the way the Swiss and Norwegians couldn't. Unless Campbell is inhuman tonight, I think we can put 3 past him. I think we have the ability to do that, we get pucks in deep and we grind on those defensemen and the Canadian forwards have been a lot better than most anyone anticipated. I don't have a lot of faith that we can put 4 past Campbell, but I didn't think we'd put 5 past Lehner either. Obviously though, Lehner struggled like hell early on but by the midway point had settled in enough to finish the game with some huge saves. I don't think we'll get lucky enough to catch an opponent's star goalie like that twice. So that puts the magic number at 2. Can we keep the US to 2 goals or less? We have a great defense that is going to limit the quality chances, but it's all gonna be on Visentin's shoulders to stop the ones he should and to come up with a couple great saves here and there. And of course there's always the chance Campbell says **** you guys, I'm not letting you score.

All that said, this is still Canada vs. USA, so all sense and logic goes out the window. These games are just unpredictable. Also, Schenn's been having an incredible tournament, but if he wants to be remembered in Canadian lore the way Toews, Tavares and Eberle are, he needs to play his best game of the tournament tonight. All three of those guys stepped up their games when the spotlight was brightest and he can't be any different. He doesn't need 5 points, because this isn't the Czechs or Norway, but he needs to be the best player tonight.

Anyway, here's to a great game, and may the best team win.

Playing this tournament in Buffalo so didn't give Americans a home-ice advantage lol. 5 million Canadians live within like 2 hours of Buffalo. Its less of a drive for us to see games in Buffalo then it is to go up to Ottawa.

Holy hell, Jack Campbell is amazing. That game should not have been that close.

Visentin came up with some big saves when Canada needed them, too.

Has anyone seriously looked into going to Calgary next year? It's a real possibility to me, probably will go with some friends. Never got to go in Vancouver because the tickets were overpriced to all Hell (sort of like Canucks tickets, fork over 90 bucks for upper bowl, please).

I just felt bad for Campbell. His defense let him down a bunch and there was no offensive support. Of course he was the one receiving the heckling, because that's how it works, but he was awesome last night.

He's still eligible for next year by about 4 days.

How does the eligibility work? I figured it was cut just on January 1st, cuz last night Ellis turned 20. Also Campbell with another year is gonna be SCARY. I hope the Stars bring him up, lol. Cuz players at this age seem to improve exponentially as years go by. Just look at Schenn, largely a non-factor last year, tournament MVP if we win this year. Cowen was hurt last year, but even if he was healthy, I doubt he would have been nearly as good as this year. PK Subban in 2008 wasn't very good, best defenseman in the tourney in 2009. Pietrangelo sucked in Ottawa, was excellent in Regina. Also on that note, I hope the Devils take Couturier #1 and let him develop in junior another year!

DISQUALIFY CANADA!

Campbell would be great to have next year, but we could have Dominik Hasek circa 1998 in net and it wouldn't matter if the team played like it did in this tournament.

I'm hoping Bjugstad can be a guy to take a big step for next year. He looked really good at times, so take that 6'4 frame and add another year, he could be a star in Calgary.

It's funny cuz he's so baby faced, and then he grows that abomination of a beard.

I'm sure the US will be better next year. My guess is maybe they listened too closely to people telling them how good they were? It can be dangerous for players of any age, let alone a bunch of teenagers with big league aspirations. They'll probably be wanting to return the favour to us in Calgary.

Why would Dallas take the deal?

Because Kovalchuk is super talented! And that 1st round draft pick is important! Hey, this is a draft forum, right? Of course with Kovalchuk's contract, they'll have to let him walk after his rookie deal expires, but we'll just overlook that.

MichaelJordanEberle (sabf)

Or if that fails, how about Kovalchuk for the rights to Jared Cowen? Ottawa needs scoring and loves foreigners, right?

You can pile the snow up in my back yard, hollow it out and stay in there if you come to Calgary next year. I'd offer my floor, but internet posters and three kids gets a veto from the wife.

Calgary is cheaper than Vancouver as far as hotels, and transit isn't great if you are out partying late at night. A rental car may be the way to go then you could go out to Banff National Park and some other sites. Drinking age is 18, but they do enforce DUI laws rather expensively. Flights from Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Newark/NY, San Francisco, Vegas seem to be the easiest to come by. Feel free to pm any questions you have about Calgary.

And I believe you need a passport. At least we need one to visit your country so they probably expect you to have one to get back in.

Honestly, I think Canada just ran out of steam. They played with SO MUCH intensity in the first 2 periods. Russia was actually lucky to only be down 0-3 after 2.

In the 3rd, Kuznetsov, Tarasenko and Kitsyn started to skate circles around them. Canadian defenders didn't have enough left in the tank to keep up.

I think they just figured it was done after it was 3-0. And yeah, your goalie was insane. I was *SHOCKED* they pulled him. I guess that's why I'm not a hockey coach, lol. But yeah, maybe the rest of you can feel me here, but do you remember when playing a sport and your switch just turns off for some reason? I think that happened to Canada. They were up 3-0, the switch turned off and then it doesn't turn back on. I don't think we generated a single chance off the forecheck in the 3rd, and that's what we did all tournament long. The Russians showed a ton of heart, because it's just as easy to turn that switch off when you're getting run off the ice as it is to turn it off while running off the ice. Theirs was square in the "on" position, and it probably moved a few notches up. I couldn't believe it. Soon as it was tied, I knew we were going to lose. Absolutely zero intensity. I hope every returning member of the team for next year remembers that period and it's just burned into their psyche. I hope all off-season long they go absolutely nuts in the gym, so they can get it all back in Calgary and Edmonton. We absolutely *have* to win next year, no ifs ands or buts.

I didn't get to talk about it earlier, but the bronze medal game might have been the most fun I had at the entire tournament. I mean, everything leading up to USA-Canada puck drop was nuts, but this was just very enjoyable. It was nice to see a well played consolation victory over Sweden with some ceremony after. Yeah, bronze medal games must be tough to get up for. Big ups to the US for playing so well against the Swedes. Well, barring last night's awful collapse, he and the entire defense played well. I didn't hear Barrie's name a whole lot but when I did, he was doing good things. I think our two best defencemen in the tourney were Ellis and Cowen by a good margin, and everyone else played really well from what I saw. There really wasn't a weak spot on our defense this year until last night in the 3rd when everyone sucked.
