View Full Version : Week 17: Bears @ Packers

This is our 2nd straight playoff game essentially.

JSonline poll today asked if the Vikings beating the Eagles was a favor to us.

It's about 59% yes, and 40% no.

I think it is.

I think Lovie will start his top guys, but sooner or later, he'll pull them. And that will become sooner if they have a guy or two go down.

I am worried about the fact that with Bigby out (Derrick Martin, Anthony Smith, and Morgan Burnett already out at S), Jarrett Bush now becomes a factor back there at safety, and remember Collins barely was able to go last week.

Don't worry too much man. All year guys have been stepping up.

Has there been any word from the Bears about if their resting their starters Sunday?

No team says they're going to rest their starters. But cmon, they will. Worst case they make it like a preseason game, give them a half and then yank 'em. Either way, expect conservative playcalling to protect them.

Lovie didn't use starters 4 years ago in the exact same situation so don't be surprised if they don't even hit the field. Why risk a chop block tearing up Julius Peppers or Urlachers knee? A raging Clay Matthews tearing Cutler's acl? Etc.

I'd expect to see Cutler, Peppers, Urlacher and maybe a couple other guys out really soon.

a perfect January day for this game!!!!

Possible for the injury luck turn around now thru the Super Bowl, and everyone else gets tons of injuries while we stay remarkably healthy (like the Bears have for 16 weeks) ?

princefielder28
01-02-2011, 01:15 PM
can we please quit bringing up injuries with every single post!?!?

injuries have hurt our depth, no doubt, but outside of Grant and Finley we haven't lost that impactful of a player...and i'll make the argument that with Finley out of our offense we have been more effective in passing the football because there's no obligation to try and get him the football and look how Jennings has taken off since then.

Here are the inactives for the Packers:

S Atari Bigby, FB Korey Hall, CB Josh Gordy, LB Frank Zombo, C/G Evan Dietrich-Smith, G Nick McDonald and DE Cullen Jenkins.

For Chicago, they are not resting any starters. Here are the inactives: S Craig Steltz, CB Joshua Moore, RB Kahlil Bell, G Herman Johnson, G/C Edwin Williams, WR Earl Bennett and DT Marcus Harrison.

(PF28, your comment on injuries doesn't take into account the impact it's had on special teams, which most fans forget is a big part of the game, and a part that has helped us to lose 3 or 4 games this season.)

Well Tampa Bay won, so we can't back into the playoffs from a Giants loss. Good thing I fully expect to handle the Bears. I definitely think we'd win even if they were playing all out, but if we can score first and then build an early lead it should be an easy win.

Sportsfan486

DON'T PUNT.

And Jennings, nice dude. wtf ANOTHER drop on an easy catch. The corner didn't have his arms in there, Jennings just dropped it.

I'm also shocked he didn't get a TD on that earlier catch.

DRIVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Cmon dude.

And was that a catch?

So drops and a fumble to end our first two drives. Did no one except Rodgers and our defense get the memo that we need to win to get into the playoffs? COME ON GUYS, STEP IT UP.

Yeah, what is going ON? I wish they'd show replays of this amazing coverage, cuz Rodgers has time to throw the ball but he's not.

ugly 1st half by a team playing for its playoff life. The offense couldn't look more lethargic. OLine looks like crap, the WR's are dropping passes left and right

the D and, surprisingly, the ST came to play today. Wake the F up, offense

This is what just amazes me about this team. One week they look unstoppable and the next week they just look foolsih. Drops and poor play calls to boot. Hey McCarthy you gotta run the ball. We ran last week and it was just effective enough to open up our offense. Get Jackson out and start feeding carries to Starks. He's the only guy who can truely run the ball.

Isn't it amazing how Jackson goes 1 yard, -1 yard, -2 yard, and Starks comes in and gets 3 yards, 6 yards, 4 yards on the same plays? DO NOT RUN THE BALL WITH JACKSON. I don't CARE how Starks practices, the dude RUNS THE FOOTBALL AND GAINS YARDS.

And how many drops so far? Including Driver's fumble, I've counted at least 5, including 2 to Jennings that either would have been TDs or inside the 10.

With the score as is, I doubt Lovie takes his guys out now. Pack needed to jump up early to make the decision easier. Since the Bears lead, I doubt we see him yank anybody

I agree. I'd differ if we were up by like 14 on their starters, but this showing is PATHETIC.

Cutler going 98 yards without throwing an interception is a tall order. Beautiful defense all game.

Sportsfan486
01-02-2011, 06:19 PM
Pros:
Playoffs.
Defense looked DOMINANT.
Special teams played well (wtf?!)

Cons:
Offense. Awful. What?
Rodgers had his worst game of his last 7 starts.
WRs need to learn that their job is to CATCH THE FOOTBALL.
Bulaga is borderline benchable after this game.
Playcalling was atrocious at times.

We're off to play the Eagles. Michael. *******. Vick. After that it'd be a rematch at the Falcons. Tough, tough road to the 'bowl.

it's funny how bears fans make these excuses of how they "won" the game, how in any way did you get a W when you put your rivals into the playoffs and if things fall in place for both teams, you have to face.

oh how would i love to see this Packers team eliminate the Bears, just for fun, so here's to hoping both teams make it to the NFC Divisional game.

Well it wasn't pretty, but it's a win and it gets us in the playoffs. Really it was just our offense failing to capitalize. Our defense was great and surprisingly so were our special teams. Hell, even Rodgers didn't have that bad of a game. Overall we could have done a lot better on offense though.

I don't think there's much to be concerned about even though it was ugly. The Bears are our rival and it's almost always a tough game against them even in years when they're terrible. They weren't fully motivated, but their starters did play every single snap and they were trying to win the game. It's not like we were in a battle against Todd Collins and the rest of their scrubs. Admittedly, I was expecting it to be a lot easier than it was, but I'm not exactly surprised that they put up a fight.

gameball to freakin Masthay. Dude was ridiculous today. Why can't we get ST performacne like that week in and week out.

How about 5th string OLB Erik Walden? Dude was all over the place today. Dom Capers realy gets the best out of whoever he has out there on D. The D overall was amazing, as usual. Talk about these 2 units putting the offense on their back and carrying them today while that part of the game struggled

oh ya, Bishop with over 100 tackles on the season! I don't want to talk about the offseason yet, but for some reason Bish/Hawk really have played well together this season, and I think the team might be better with them at the starting ILB spots over a Nick Barnett/Brandon Chillar combo. I wonder what they do for next season?

He has been the guy the past three since Zombo's been hurt, but I hope he keeps that spot even if Zombo is good to go.

Hawk doesn't even look like the same player this year. I thought it was all but certain he would be cut to avoid the $10 million salary next year, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Bishop I want signed long term. He's the physical LB that we need on the inside. He'll knock the RB backwards instead of letting him get that extra yard. He was very good in his first year starting and with a full season I think he could be a pro bowl quality player.

Barnett is underrated on here. Like Ryan Grant, he doesn't get the respect he deserves among Packer fans. He played very well last year when no one thought he could fit the 3-4. When healthy, he's still the best linebacker on the team.

Next year I want Barnett and Bishop as our starters. I might still keep Hawk around for his last year though. Chillar was never supposed to be a starter. He's a coverage specialist and good backup that will be useful no matter who the starters are. Being able to sub him in for Hawk or Bishop on passing downs would be huge right now.

Also I'd be kind of curious to see Bishop tried at OLB. Run some packages of Bishop-Barnett-Hawk-Matthews. If it works well leave him there as the full time starter and Hawk in the middle.

I know they started to run that more with Chillar when we lost Poppinga and Jones. Walden doesn't look half bad though and Zombo was filling in nicely as well.

Reguardless I feel good with the combination of guys we have. I'd love to upgrade the position but its been shown that we have capable guys on the roster.

Well said. Agreed on BIshop. He's the perfect type of ILB on a 3-4 team. I really hope the Pack bring him back and ensure he is a starter on the team. I thought I read earlier in the year that Bishop wouldn't accept an extension and wants to test FA, since he feels slighted by GB during his tenure here. I hope that was just rumor-mongering. I also hope the Pack keep Jolly for next season, AND Jenkins. I love the talent on this defense. Far cry from those early 2000's defenses the Pack had. Such garbage in those days and I hated that unit with a passion

Despite Cowboys fans thinking Capers is going to bolt to Dallas the first chance he gets, he's not going anywhere.

As for Greene, I don't think he's a future defensive coordinator. He's a damn good OLBs coach, but there's a lot more involved in running the whole defense that I don't think he can handle. In fact I don't think he'd even be interested in being a coordinator. Not that I have any inside information on that, but I think he's content being a position coach. There's a lot more work and time involved in being a coordinator. If for some reason Capers would leave his replacement would almost certainly be Mike Trgovac.

That was before he was starting, or just a couple games into it. If we gave him a competitive offer I'm sure he'd take it if he was guaranteed a starting job. The problem there is it means we'll have to make an early decision on Hawk.

I think we will bring Jolly back. He still keeps the one year $2.5 million tender he signed last year. I don't see any reason we wouldn't bring him back. If he's out of shape and ineffective we can cut him before the season, but I'm expecting him to return to form. Add Jolly to a healthy Cullen Jenkins, Ryan Pickett, and an improved BJ Raji and that will be nasty.

And yeah, Jenkins better be re-signed. He should be priority #1 of the offseason, ahead of Bishop.

I think we keep Hawk and let him and Barnett fight it out for the 2nd ILB job. If Bishop isn't starting next year, I won't even watch a single game. Dude has earned his spot.

Hawk has been the definition of solid all year long. He's always in position and a sure tackler. Not a playmaker but he's almost never bad. Barnett has a bit more playmaking ability and is, in my opinion, a better cover backer. Let them fight it out, our #3 ILB is going to get playing time anyway.

Walden. Wow. He looked like a legit pass rusher out there. Is he our new OLB on that side? I know it's one game against a poor OLine, but he looked dynamic.

Also, I continue to like Starks running the ball. Jackson isn't the guy. Starks needs to be our 1st and 2nd down guy. Period.

Barnett has a bit more playmaking ability and is, in my opinion, a better cover backer. Let them fight it out, our #3 ILB is going to get playing time anyway. I think we have to at least see what we can get for Hawk in a trade. $10 million is a lot to pay for a guy we don't really need. If we can shed that salary and pick up at least a 4th it'd be worth it.

Walden. Wow. He looked like a legit pass rusher out there. Is he our new OLB on that side? I know it's one game against a poor OLine, but he looked dynamic.Like I said earlier, since the Patriots game he's looked like the best OLB we have besides Matthews. He's not the long term answer, but he should definitely be the guy for the playoffs. The Bears line is the reason for him getting the big plays, but he has been solid the past three weeks.

Also, I continue to like Starks running the ball. Jackson isn't the guy. Starks needs to be our 1st and 2nd down guy. Period.
The only problem with Starks is that it took too long for him to get involved in the offense. If he was healthy the whole season he would probably be getting the majority of carries. However, since he's only been full go for 5 weeks I can definitely understand not trusting him to be the guy. I think he has a lot of potential, but he's not ready yet.
