Two russian and a couple of Japanese plan on cloning a mammoth is about 5 years.

I don't know how I feel about cloning. I think it can help greatly in the medical field.
Growing extremities (ears) and replacing them on victims of accidents.
Then you get the ideas like the movie "The Island" though- is that so far off of what really could be?
Or is it no big deal... same DNA but still a different person...

...Thoughts?

Well, at least clone me first so my son doesn't grow up a bastard :)

If this is one step closer to me walking a triceratops down the street on a leash, then I'm all for it.

Clone all the animals you want. I would love to see a real-life wooley mammoth, and it would be nice to repopulate the world with some extinct or endangered species.

Cloning humans to me is weird, as of now I'll say I'm not in favor. Cloning some parts, like ears or parts of the brain or whatever, is a gray area.

If they bring T-rex back I would probably jizz my pants. I can't wait to be the first person in the neighborhood riding my dinosaur up and down the street..... bitches love T-rex.

I want to play xbox while my clone goes to work so yes i am in favor of cloning. I also want to go to a real life jurassic park

I've avoided rewatching Jurassic Park for fear that the special effects will look stupid to me now.

That is part of the weirdness that I don't think humanity is ready to handle. Would clones be real people with rights, or just utility bodies for medicine/labor/sexual pleasure/etc? Governments or corporations determining personhood on any level seems like a terrible idea to me.

What sense could it possibly make to clone extinct animals? That completely violates the purpose of natural selection.

On that subject... you couldn't populate a species with clones unless you had a ton of DNA sources. There needs to be significant genetic variation within a species.

We do not have the infrastructure to handle dinosaurs. If Jurassic Park taught us anything it's that dinosaurs cannot be controlled. MADNESS I SAY! Jeff Goldblum isn't coming to save us.

Cloning is badass. But there's no reason to think that clones would be any different than twins... they could potentially have completely different personalities based on life experiences, and such.

Obviously Jurassic Park 3 taught us that dinosaurs can be contained if you just put them all on an island. The only problem would be pteradactyls, but then you just build a giant bird cage to hold them....wait...nevermind, because people leave the damn gate open so they escape...

Also, I would totally go to a Jurassic Park. If I was gonna die early, dying by dinosaur would be badass.

i disagree that the ability to survive an asteroid collision suggests un-fitness.

Well... the levels of oxygen in the atmosphere are currently insufficient to sustain a high number of extremely large land animals. So... they would have died eventually... or become much smaller... which is what happened.

well you could, they'd just all have freak-offspring. and you'd need to continue to clone the parents to keep the numbers up. it would, likely, be financially unsustainable.

I'm not sure the financial stability is the most important consideration, but yes... very unstable. Granted... Jurassic Park was a complete financial failure as well. Good luck getting investors. Scoff.

Screw riding. I'm flying everywhere on my pterodactyl.

iowatreat54
01-18-2011, 03:56 PM
Well if this was trully like Jurassic Park, there would be no need to worry about breeding. The dinosaurs on the island were asexual because of the reptile DNA they used, so they could reproduce no matter what. That's what caused the problem in the first place...

You don't have to clone women to be able to have them as sex slaves.

As a scientist that works largely with DNA transfection and cell culture, I absolutely feel that cloning should be allowed...BUT, regulated.

The advancements we can make are far too great to ignore. I'm all for cloning everything but full functioning human beings.

Did it not having the biggest deus ex machina for an ending in the history of cinema? I don't think it could have been bigger if Jesus himself came down and laser-eyed the raptors. Like, any time the T-Rex moves within a half-mile radius, the ground shakes. Yet he snuck into this building with them and remained unnoticed mere feet from the people until he snagged a raptor out of the air.

Cloning would be super duper awesome imo.

Forgetting the awesome medical side of the whole thing.

Forgetting the whole cloning Jessica Alba so that every male can have one as a "pet".

And just thinking of bringing back all those pimping animals that are extinct that we go to museums to look at the bones of would just be amazing.

Yeah... I'm all for cloning and I just don't get the whole ethical side of it to be honest but hell I don't get the fuss with abortions and the like so call me ignant :)

The problem is the older an individual gets their dna builds a long chain on the end and it causes complications, so when you clone an adult the baby clone has that long chain and will die way early.

But yea i want dinosaurs and im pumped to ride this mammoth
