Welcome to the "Build a Team of Prospects" challenge for 2011. This will be the 4th year I've run one of these, and I'm looking forward to this one. With Scott's rankings updated and some time left before the Senior Bowl and Combine, now is as good of time as any.

Due to the sheer number of submissions and lack of time to invest on my end, I was unable to declare a victor last year. So in order to lighten the load a little bit, I've enlisted the help of TACKLE in helping me determine the finalists this year.

Basically, you will be creating a team of 22 players (11 starters offense and defense) using prospects from the 2011 NFL Draft and one player who is still in college, with the exception of Andrew Luck.

Also, since it has been an issue in the past, your team will be judged based on how it would do as a pro style team. (As opposed to a college style team.)

Furthermore, as another change for this year, we will be using Scott's Top 100 prospects list as a basis for player limits. (As opposed to using his mock in previous years which left a lot of gray areas.) In addition, I've decided to try and make the process a bit more challenging. I felt that in previous years, I allowed the use of too many early round selections. So, there will be fewer early picks meaning you'll have to do some digging to try and find some "steals" with your late round picks.

If you think it would help you, feel free to include some details about the system you will be running on offense or defense.

The Top 100 list can be found at the following address:
http://www.draftcountdown.com/Rankings/TOP.php

Using that list, you will create a team of prospects within the following limits:

1 Top 5 pick
1 Top 15 pick (not in the top 5)
2 Top 30 picks (not in the top 15)
2 Top 50 picks (not in the top 30)
3 Top 75 picks (not in the top 50)
4 Top 100 picks (not in the top 75)
8 Players not ranked in the Top 100
1 Player still in the NCAA (NOT Andrew Luck)

You will have until 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, January 25th to submit your team in this thread. Any submissions after that will not be counted. TACKLE and I will then compile our top teams and come up with at least 5 finalists. (More is possible, but it will be at least 5.) I will then make a poll thread where everyone will get to vote for the winner. The team in the lead after 3 days will be declared the winner. That poster will get plus rep from me and hopefully the other participants. They will also get to gloat and feel good about themselves for a while.

Here is a team I threw together quickly as an example. It will not be included in the judging. Please stick to this format to make it easier on us to grade and rank the teams. It is very helpful if they are all uniform. If you venture too far from this format, your submission will not count. In fact, it would be recommended if you just copy/pasted mine and substituted your own players and styles.

You do not have to have these exact positions....for example, if you want a 3rd WR and not a TE, so be it. Just make sure you have a reasonable 11 on both sides of the ball. (IE 5 o-lineman, etc.)

I'd do this but it's so time consuming. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Offensive Gameplan: Between the tackles run game setting up a play-action oriented passing attack that focuses on pushing the ball deep and attacks the middle of the field. A handful of wildcat plays per game with Randall Cobb and Mark Ingram running the show.

Defensive Gameplan: Base 4-3 defense with some 3-4 thrown in on rare occasions. Emphasis on getting pass rush with front four instead of blitzes. Lots of defensive line stunts. Lots of zone coverage for the secondary.

As far as scheme goes, the offense would run a very balanced WCO in the Bill Walsh style, which is to say, short-yardage and high completion percentage passing to slants and similar routes, with lots of misdirection running. The idea on offense is to get the ball into the hands of your playmakers, be it through passing or running. And with an O-line this beastly, I love that I could run a ball-control offense.

On defense, which I feel is the strength of my team, we would run a John Fox style 4-3, as that best suits the available talent. The two safeties would mirror responsibilities, rather than your typical FS/SS combo, an outdated idea in the modern NFL given how favorably the rules lean towards passing.

If you haven't noticed, I like me some athletes on defense.

Run Heavy Offense with the occasional bootleg + play action.
4-3 defense, that is very aggressive.

My offense obviously isn't the best but I like my two running backs behind a great run blocking line with obviously the occasional pass.
My defense is the strength of my team. My line gets pressure every down, which means I can drop more into coverage or just attack more with the 5th guy on the blitz.

Tell me this isn't the best team in the thread. D is designed along the lines of a 3-4/46 hybrid...offense is led by a high percentage type passer with hands and YAC WRs and a jumbo interior OL for a power running game. I'd switch Carpenter to RG and Moffitt to LG.

I don't know a lot about schemes so instead of labeling them for offense and defense, I'll just try to explain what I was going for.

Offense: Built around Barkley to spread the ball around to the playmakers at skill positions. Utilizing strong offensive line to give him time.
Defense: Few blitzes. Letting strong defensive line dominate point of attack, also allowing athletic linebackers to roam around. 2 talented CBs with shut-down potential. 2 solid safeties.

Offense - limited playbook pro-style. lots of quick hits, screen passes, etc. anyone who does differently with a rookie qb (especially a true sophomore) is a fool. run a couple go routes to the WRs every game. versatile TE who can play in the backfield taken for a reason - safety valve. RBs are fast w/ upside but injury prone.

Defense - 4-3 with a big focus on shutting down the run. DTs main job is to eat up blockers to free things up for the 3 killer LBs. Also have a SS who can play in the box + other DBs are willing tacklers. Pass D pretty sick too - McDaniel really the only weak spot

I should have said no Matt Barkely either....I took Luck out because I knew that everyone in their right minds would use their 2012 on him. I was trying to get everyone to try and build a team playing to the strengths of one of the crummier QBs available this year.

Alas...I'll still find a way to sift through the entries, even if most of them have the same damn QB.

Thanks for doing this, ooh what fun.

Offense: Shotgun/Spread
Defense: 4-3, Primarily Man Coverage

Targeted premium position players early and built around their strengths, picking up Dime a dozen positions like safety, WR and interior O-line with later picks. . So for Newton, apart from a balanced group of WRs, he has a RB and a TE that can be weapons in the passing game. Ijalana at LT is an odd choice but Im a big fan and think hes the best LT in the draft if you really want to, you can swap Castonzo and Ijalana in your mind.

On defense, spent high picks on pass rushers so Smith and Burton can press and play man which is what I see as their specialty. Also gives the safeties a little more freedom. Wilson is obviously an OLB right now but I see him as an excellent fit at safety. Hes undersized and not very physical for a LB, but hes very good in coverage and can cover a lot of ground. Hell primarily be playing in the box with Williams playing centerfield.

I think I started that trend, so uh... you're welcome?

from what I can tell of the other teams if you did that everyone would just bypass the first round QBs to take Dalton and load up on defense and/or a sick running game. you'd probably get a few Cam Newton's. I might take Gabbert. He has the most arm talent of the 3 guys clumped together in the top 15 spot and he isn't addicted to crack. Either that or I'd take Kaepernick and Tyrod and just say **** it and run all the time

FWIW I considered putting Cam on my team as a TE. The top 15 value hurt him (if it was a 30 i probably wouldve done it) but can you imagine the trick plays? TE Reverse!

If you changed the rules now to make the QB position 2011 draftees only, I wouldn't complain. I'd just have to commit more time to the draft (and this contest), which is what I do at work most days anyway.

I won't change the rules this time after so many have already submitted, but if I do another one later in the process...maybe right before the draft, I'll definitely tweek the rules a bit.

Offense – Smashmouth style. Power run game that uses the run to set up the pass/play-action. Old style Pittsburgh Steelers, recent Miami Dolphins style. Passing game utilizes the West Coat offense. Leshoure is the all-purpose back while Helu is brought in to help soften up the defense and grind out the tough yards. Wide receivers are physical and can operate in the short/intermediate passing game of the WCO.

Defense- 3-4. Aggressive, blitz-heavy style that emphasizes putting pressure on the QB and stopping the run. Example would be Dick LeBeau's Pittsburgh defense. Pressure can come from anywhere with all of the linebackers capable of blitzing effectively. Corners will be left on islands quite often due to their capability. Johnson will act as the center fielder which will allow Black to play closer to the line giving his ability in stopping the run.

You gotta love these threads. Lots of fun and hilarious to look at in a few years potentially.

Offensive game plan; Built to pass from the line up. Not a power running game, but plenty of targets capable of picking yards up underneath in conjunction with lighter, more athletic linemen who can pull and block down the field. Lot's of hurry up. Not afraid to take shots down the field with Smith and Alshon Jeffrey.

QB: Ricky Stanzi, Iowa (Top 100 Selection)
RB: Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington (Non Top 100 Selection)
WR: Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina (2012 Selection)
WR: Torrey Smith, Maryland(Top 50 Selection)
WR: Greg Salas, Hawaii (Non Top 100 Selection)
TE/H-Back: DJ Williams, Arkansas (Non Top 100 Selection)
LT: Nate Solder, Colorado (Top 30 Selection)
LG: Danny Watkins, Baylor (100 Selection)
C: Kristofer O’Dowd, USC (Non Top 100 Selection)
RG: James Carpenter, Alabama (Non Top 100 Selection)
RT: Marcus Gilbert, Florida (Non Top 100 Selection)

Defensive gameplan; Really like this group. Two gap 3-4 where the line responsibility is to occupy blockers and rush the passer second. Lots of pressure from the second level with Brooks Reed and Robert Quinn both coming regularly and Martez Wilson and Mike Mohamed more than capable of coming on the blitz as well. Hopefully a dominating set of corners with Jimmy Smith and Prince Amukamara shutting down receivers to open up the blitz packages.

DE: Cameron Heyward, Ohio State (Top 30 Selectiton)
NT: Phil Taylor, Baylor (Top 100 Selection)
DE: Muhammad Wilkerson, Temple (Top 75 Selection)
LOLB: Robert Quinn, North Carolina (Top Five Selection)
MLB: Mike Mohamed, Cal (Non Top 100)
MLB: Martez Wilson, Illonis (Top 75 Selection)
ROLB: Brooks Reed, Arizona (Top 75 Selection)
CB: Prince Amukamara, Nebraska (Top Fifteen Selection)
CB: Jimmy Smith, Colorado (Top 50 Selection)
SS: Jaiquwan Jarrett, Temple (Non Top 100)
FS: Deunta Williams, North Carolina (Top 100 Selection)

Pyramid;

1 Top Five Pick: Robert Quinn
1 Top Fifteen Pick: Prince Amukamara
2 Top 30: Cameron Heyward, Nate Solder
2 Top 50: Jimmy Smith, Torrey Smith
3 Top 75: Brooks Reed, Muhammad Wilkerson, Martez Wilson
4 Top 100: Phil Taylor, Ricky Stanzi, Deunta Williams, Danny Watkins
8 Non Top 100: Jaiquwan Jarrett, DJ Williams, Taiwan Jones, Greg Salas, Kritofer O'Dowd, James Carpenter, Marcus Gilbert, Mike Mohamed
2012: Alshon Jeffery

Edit for accuracy;

I know I said I would stand by the team, but Watkins as a guy just outside of the top 75 is just too much to pass up and is a major upgrade for a weak offensive line.

Me neither! Sooooo much time left too haha.

Seems like the main strategy for most people was to stack defense and run a 3-4. That's not entirely unexpected given that's how the value stacks up in this draft.

I really hate this year's quarterback class, which I normally wouldn't devote so little resources to in an exercise like this. Accordingly, because the offense is shot without a top tier quarterback, I tried to focus on creating a dominant defense that would get lots of pressure (and have playmaking cornerbacks ready to pick off passes). I think that Ponder might be kinda OK, so I picked him. I swear that I'm not a North Carolina homer: they have so many defensive prospects that fall into need areas naturally.

Offense: Run-heavy team that uses the run to set up the vertical pass game/play-action. Two 6'1 WR that play bigger than their size and you better don't understimate their ability to get deep. Excellent pass catcher TE with some blocking ability and excellent lead-blocker FB with some pass chatching ability...

Defense: 4-3, Jim Johnson-esque type of defense. IMO perfect fit for my MLB. Great front-seven. Boom-or-bust secundary.

Team: Pennsylvania Eagles

D Scheme: High pressure 1-gap 3-4. NT controls centre of O-Line and attempts to draw Guards, setting up a heavy blitz from both OLBs including stunts through the gaps made by NT. Corners play close man, with the safeties playing a read and react 2 man deep look.

O scheme: Pro style with QB under centre. RB used and motioned in pass game for screens. Receivers play an intermediate route tree focussing on 5-10 yard routes with deep routes thrown in to keep opposing D guessing. TE as hot read when opposing D blitzes.

1 Top 5 pick (Quinn)
1 Top 15 pick (not in the top 5) (Julio Jones)
2 Top 30 picks (not in the top 15) (Sherrod, Jordan)
2 Top 50 picks (not in the top 30) (Mallet, Houston)
3 Top 75 picks (not in the top 50) (Leshoure, Wilkerson, Wilson)
4 Top 100 picks (not in the top 75) (Carmichael, Williams, Moffitt, Little)
8 Players not ranked in the Top 100 (Clay, Williams, Rackley, Gilbert, Hairston, Ellis, Marsh, Sands)
1 Player still in the NCAA (NOT Andrew Luck) (Burfict)

Offense:

(I run a power offense much like the Chargers, where we run a lot of power runs up the middle, for which Leshoure is a perfect fit, and then go off that with a very solid play action. Charles Clay is a guy who moves all over the place and creates mismatches at 6'3" 235+ who runs in the 4.4-4.5 range, But is also a great lead blocker as a FB. The WR's are not only very good deep threats, but they are also some of the best blocking WR's in the last 5-10 years. I built around that with Mallet as a QB who can really let it fly with pretty good accuracy (on the deep ball). I have a very physical OL who are great run blockers, as well as very smart and are more than serviceable in pass pro. Also much like the Chargers i use the TE in Williams and Clay to move all over the place and create mismatches.)

QB: Ryan Mallet (Top 50)
RB: Mikel Leshoure (Top 75)
H Back: Charles Clay (Non Top 100)
WR: Julio Jones (Top 15)
WR: Greg Little (Top 100)

LG: Will Rackley (Non Top 100)
C: John Moffitt (Top 100)
RG: Marcus Gilbert (Non Top 100)
RT: Chris Hairston (Non Top 100)

3-4 Defense:

(I run an aggressive 3-4 D with 2 VERY good pass rushing OLB's, one of which has great experience in that very same role in Houston and can drop back easily into coverage and be a multi purpose OLB and one who is the best pure pass rusher in the class, who has the ability to drop back into coverage, but is mroe a pure pass rusher. The DL is very stout and cabe forces against the run, but are also quick enough and play with good enough handwork and footwork to make impacts rushing the passer. Kendrick ellis is a good player who plays low, and is very athletic despite his size. My ILB's are very good athletes who play very aggressively and are very, very good in the run, and can easily stack and shed, much like you want a 3-4 ILB to do, but can also cover and if needed, rush the passer, like my D will bring alot. I have 4 Playmaking DB's who can make people pay when they try to go deep and beat the blitz, but are also very athletic and can run with guys. Williams is a great centerfielder type and Sands is great in run support, and even though he isn't great in coverage, he uses his length really well to break up passes, and wont be overly mismatched against TE's because of his athletic ability. Brown and Marsh are very good staying with guys and can play tight man coverage and easily run with guys.)

DE: Muhammad Wilkerson (Top 75)
NT: Phil Taylor (Top 100)
DE: Cameron Jordan (Top 30)
WOLB: Robert Quinn (Top 5)
WILB: Vontaze Burfict (NCAA)

Why settle for someone like Christian Ponder or Ricky Stanzi at QB with so many other choices out there. If you don't like someone from the 2011 class, someone like Landry Jones or Matt Barkley seem like must haves.

The first team I mocked up on paper was quite similar to many of those already posted so I went back and started over.

QB: Collin Kaepernick - Nevada (100+)
RB 1: Montee Ball - Wisconsin (NCAA)
RB 2: Daniel Thomas - Kansas State (100+)
WR: A.J. Green - Georgia (Top 5)
WR: Austin Pettis - Boise State (100+)
TE: Luke Stocker - Tennessee (97)
LT: Orlando Franklin - Miami, FL (51)
LG: Danny Watkins - Baylor (78)
C: Tim Barnes - Missouri (100+)
RG: John Moffit - Wisconsin (93)
RT: Gabe Carimi - Wisconsin (40)

DE: Brooks Reed - Arizona (68)
DT: Kendrick Ellis - Hampton (100+)
DT: Marvin Austin - North Carolina (61)
DE: Aldon Smith - Missouri (11)
SAM: KJ Wright - Miss St. (100+)
MIKE: Kelvin Sheppard - L.S.U. (82)
WILL: Mark Herzlich - Boston College (50)
CB: Brandon Harris - Miami, FL (23)
CB: Aaron Williams- Texas (28)
FS: Tyler Sash- Iowa (100+)
SS: Shiloh Keo - Idaho (100+)

(1)Top 5 - A.J. Green
(1)Top 15 - Aldon Smith
(2)Top 30 - Brandon Harris, Aaron Williams
(2)Top 50 - Gabe Carimi, Mark Herzlich
(3)Top 75 - Orlando Franklin, Marvin Austin, Brooks Reed
(4)Top 100 - Danny Watkins, Kelvin Sheppard, John Moffit, Luke Stocker
(8 )Outside top 100 - Collin Kaepernick, Daniel Thomas, Austin Pettis, Tim Barnes, Kendrick Ellis, K.J. Wright, Tyler Sash, Shiloh Keo
(1)NCAA player - Montee Ball

Offensively we are going to use a two back system (similar to the Jets with Greene and Tomlinson) and we have a QB that can get out of the pocket and move around a bit. Montee Ball might not be a popular choice for a current NCAA player, but he was productive when finally given the chance this year and I think he should prove to be a pretty good player in the future (plus it saved me from picking Barkley or Justin Blackmon). Kaepernick is another guy that doesn't seem to be very popular, but I like the fact that he had 1,239 pass attempts in his career and only 23 interceptions. In addition he is a four year starter and has over 130 combined career touchdowns. The addition of A.J. Green should give Kaepernick a solid receiver who can get open and go up for the ball in traffic.

Defensively we are going to try to get after the QB with the defensive line and the occasional linebacker blitz. If Aldon Smith and Brooks Reed are able to get a good pass rush, I think our corners (Brandon Harris and Aaron Williams) will be good in man coverage. Sash and Keo are two solid guys who play tough and aren't afraid to tackle. Plus both Sash and Keo are solid special teams contributors.

4-3 d-line was the top priority, followed by a cornerstone mlb and at least one olb to look to to blitz proficiently. cbs need to have some ability to jam at the line and be willing participants in run support.

thanks for doing this - very cool.
