Let's get it started.
Two long, but great weeks ahead of us.

Some early notes:

Vegas insiders install Packers as slight Super Bowl favorite

The Glantz-Culver line made the Packers an early 2 1/2-point favorite and put the total score at 45 1/2 points for the Feb. 6 game in Arlington, Texas.

Jay Kornegay, executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton, said his book made the Packers a 2-point favorite and quickly moved the line to 2 1/2 points as bettors gambled on Green Bay.

"That steam engine is still rolling," Kornegay said. "It's going to be a very interesting Super Bowl because you have two heavyweights as far as popularity goes."

Oddsmaker Andrew Patterson of Las Vegas Sports Consultants said the firm, which provides betting lines to most casinos in Nevada, made the Packers a 1 1/2-point favorite to try to encourage action on both teams.

"I think it's a good number, but a lot of us feel it's a little high," Patterson said.

Still, the memory of Rodgers remains fresh for the Steelers.

"I wish we were playing them in the snow, sleet, rain," Pittsburgh free safety Ryan Clark said of the upcoming Super Bowl meeting. "And I wish Aaron Rodgers forgot to catch the bus to the game and didn't go. [The game is] going to be inside, and they are going to be throwing that ball all around. Two very good defenses, two amazing quarterbacks, two storied franchises in the NFL."

How the Steelers plan to attack Rodgers will be one of many Super Bowl storylines -- the league's most feared defense standing across the line from the league's hottest quarterback. "This is the team, going into the playoffs, nobody wanted to face them," Clark said of the Packers. "[That's] why Chicago played their starters all game [in Week 17] because they knew [Green Bay] wasn't a team you wanted to play in the playoffs."

Our WRs vs Steelers DBs is an advantage Rodgers can exploit. The Jets were able to get some big plays and Sanchez is no Rodgers, BUT Harrison/Woodley vs Clifton/Bulaga is a tilt in their favor and they will have to be handled to allow Rodgers to get the ball out to them.

Pack (obviously) in a close one.

Our tackle play will be huge in this game. Containing that edge passrush could be the key. Also, establishing any form of a run game is important. I know we likely won't run down their throats, but a couple big runs, and some first down conversions on the ground will be key.
On defense, Ben Roethlisberger scares me. We'll be able to pressure Ben, but he's so elusive... he definitely scares me when he buys extra time.

PS, can Nick Collins please play a better game? He hasn't had the best year, and he blew a couple big plays yesterday. Roethlisberger can take advantage of his overaggressiveness. I wan't the big plays to be kept to a minimum.

I'm probably in the minority in thinking there are going to be some points scored in this game. Rodgers and his recievers will get big plays pretty easily against the Steelers secondary despite their blitz and the Steelers offense can move the chains pretty consistently. I think we grab the lead early and don't give it up though.

I see this as a high scoring affair as well. Packers won't be able to run and will need to pass to put points up on the board and Big Ben will be chasing the Packers all night to catch up. I see us winning in a close one but it will be a shootout. Game ending interception to seal it. End it in 2010-2011 Packers fashion.

We all still remember the final play last year to lose to the Steelers, with Mike Wallace on the edge in the end zone, beating Josh (who) Bell.

But I still VIVIDLY remember the play before that, and that's the key to stopping the Steelers.

Anyone else remember the play before that final one?

the last play, Jolly was busting through the line and got held by 2 Steelers Olineman and it went uncalled. That pissed me off. You couldn't even read the number on his jersey because they grabbed a hold of it to stop him from gettign to BEn

I just watched the highlights here http://www.nflrush.com/video/steelers/1290

But they skip the play just before the game winner. If I recall correctly Cullen has Ben is his grasp but doesn't get him down and that allows Ben to throw it away and stop the clock. If Cullen gets the sack, time runs out.

Exactly. He had him dead to rights, nobody blocking him..... and he just ran so fast he was semi-deked out and glances off Ben. Had he just clutched onto him, you're right, game over. Clock would have expired.

In the end, that game didn't mean anything in the end result as far as playoffs and seeding.

But just watching some right now, I think it was Tyrone Carter instead of Polamalu. He makes a huge difference as Fox pointed out.

No way. Seriously, we better not throw to him. I'll be pissed if we do. We have 4 good WRs. There's no reason to ever throw it to a defensive lineman.

McCarthy joked about it after the game (perhaps to make Pittsburgh at least consider pass if we use that formation), but the chances of actually doing it are very slim and should be zero.

I actually didn't hear McCarthy mention it. I'm not advocating for it, but it just feels like something that would happen with the formation they've used recently and Raji showing some hands and being a fan-favorite.

Still, I want to see each of our front 7, plus Woodson, get sacks on Big Ben.

Raji, smash him.
Jenkins, pound him.
Pickett, smother him.
Walden, crush him.
Bishop, blow him up.
Hawk, flatten him.
Matthews, KO him!

NFL Network had a replay of the 2009 game. Rodgers took quite a few shots in that game, especially early, but once he got time he really burned the Steelers

I think the OL is improved compared to last season, but Woodley/Harrison will still be a nightmare for the OL to stop. Can't put too much stock in that game last year, either, as the Steelers D is completely different with and without Polamalu. It's ridiculous how much better the Pack secondary is this year compared to last, as well. Shields speed should be able to match up well with Wallace. Heath Miller really hurt the Packers in that game, along with Ward. Still, I think this group will do a much better job of stoppin both of them. Pack have really done well this postseason stopping some solid TE's(Celek, Gonzalez, and now Olsen). Woodson should be all over Heath while Williams and Shields rotate on Ward/Wallace. Mendenhall will be the key, along with obviously Ben's improvising/avoiding sacks. When the Pack get to Ben, they need to make sure they hit that right arm of his...make sure he doesn't get a clean pass off or hope to cause a fumble.

TimmG6376
01-25-2011, 11:17 AM
I watched NFL Replay last night too. Forgot how back and forth that game was. The talking heads have been saying that Rodgers is the highest rated QB vs the blitz. That will be tested for sure. I still like our WRs vs their secondary (even with Troy) as long as Rodgers can make the right reads we should be able to score points.

Defenses have been able to get to Roethlisberger. Matthews, Cullen, Woodson, etc., will get their chances. As has been discussed, when they get there first priority has to be to get him down. Ben is susceptible to getting the ball stripped but if they go after the strip and miss he can extend and make a big play.

I'm a little worried about Mendenhall. The Steelers would much rather run it 30+ times and not rely on Ben to chuck it. The best defense against that is to score early and often. In 2009 Tomlin called an onside kick because he realized that his defense wasn't able to stop Rodgers that night. I think the Packers D is enough improved that if the Packers offense can put the same kind of pressure on the Steelers offense to keep pace Tramon/Shields/Collins/Woodson will get their hands on some errant throws.

BloodBrother
01-25-2011, 11:25 AM
Yeah, containing Mendenhall is priority #1. Stop the run, score early and often. Doubt the Packers will be able to run the ball effectively vs Pitt, so the Pack can't let Pitt establish their run game, either

I don't know why, but I was very curious about this.

The Packers have a 3 game white jersey winning streak.

Mike McCarthy doesn't give 2 shits about streaks.

Possibly it sends a message to the team that he doesn't believe in streaks/superstition. Uniforms, beards, shoes, socks, any of that BS doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is how they prepare for this game and what they do on the field. They didn't win 3 straight road games because they wore white jerseys. They won because they put the time in to prepare and played their asses off on the field. That's what they need to bring in two weeks.

Or maybe he just likes green.

BloodBrother
01-25-2011, 12:46 PM
I like green, so I'm fine with it. Packers DID go 7-1 while in their green home uni's(ok, one game was a throwback game)

streaks were made to be broken, anyway. Last time the Packers wore Green in SB they won. Last time they wore white....well, we remember that ****** game. Plus, green looks better anyway

also, nice bit of news so far:

WTMJ reporting that ESPN is reporting so far Wisconsin is outnumbering Penn by a 2 to 1 margin in the purchase of SB tickets. If the trend continues, Texas stadium will have Packers far outnumbering Steeler fans and it will have the feel of a Packer home game.

Pack fans need to take over that stadium!

Not all is perfect news:

There was a discussion earlier on twitter among a couple of Packers - linebacker Nick Barnett and tight end Jermichael Finley - who got hurt playing this season and have been out for the year, on injured reserve. They've been told they will not be in the Super Bowl team picture.

And that doesn't sit well with them.

@NickBarnett "Kinda sad... Found out basically IR guys can not be in team picture... It's kinda sad to think.."

@JermichaelF88 "So that just saying forget the IR players. Disrespect! But its all good someone is going to pay."

@NickBarnett to @JermichaelF88 "More added motivation !!!"

@JermichaelF88 "We got hurt playing for the team. Its not like we got injury bs'in around."
"And its a team rule! Shame"
"I guess its what have u done for me lately!"

Finley was hurt after a teammate fumbled away the ball and Finley stepped in to make the tackle. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/114584679.html

I wonder if Steeler fans, used to this with 2 Super Bowls already the past 4 or 5 years, tend to wait on tickets til closer to the game as prices tend to drop.

I heard they are already starting to dip a bit.

It's just an issue in that if you let a couple IR players, you let them all in. And then our photo just gets silly, with 15 extra guys in there. Don't think it was meant as a slap in the face, more of, we just don't have room for a bajillion guys.

I think the initial prices are just to take advantage of the people trying to swoop in quickly to ensure tickets. Basically they have 2 weeks to sell the tickets so the supply and demand will factor the prices a bit.

I blew it off when I first heard of it but listening to Finley on ESPN right now, I have to say he went from being one of my favorite players to being a guy I could care less about keeping around. For 6 hours he posted **** on Twitter about not being in a ******* photo... At least Barnett apologized so I give him some credit for doing so.

there is no rule, this was a decision made by the Packers. Apparently the guys on IR have are on some sort of rehab schedule, and having them fly with the team tuesday(which is when they will take the pic) would have conflicted with the schedule that the IR guys were on, or something like that

I get that they are frustrated/upset about not being in the pic, it's a once in a lifetime sort of thing, but damn, they need to know that at this point, any little thing will get blown up in the media and spun whatever way the media chooses. I know they made their tweets in the heat of the moment, but seriously, use better judgement.

In the end I don't think this is a big deal, and I doubt we hear much about this from here on out. Both players backtracked/apologized and that should be the end of it. They should know the team isn't trying to slight them in any way. I mean, they will be on the field with the TEAM during the game, jeez

if any of the guys use this as a sign of disrespect from the organization, then well I just don't know what to say

J-Mike88
01-26-2011, 12:10 PM
The Packers made this decision.
Apparently the team Super Bowl photos are typically done on a Tuesday down there, and the IR guys aren't coming in til Thursday.

This team is not typical, so I think they should move the photo to Thursday, and include the players.

What's the harm in that? Everyone should be happy about it. Use some f**** common sense here... this sounds like a PGA Tour rule so far.

Monomach
01-26-2011, 12:50 PM
If the Pack is smart, they'll reschedule that photo or charter a special plane to get those IR players there. Imagine you ****** up your knee or whatever helping a team go all the way and you're not included in a photo that will be hung up at team HQ and stared at by future players for the next 100 years.

You'd feel like management doesn't give two shits about you, right? Like a piece of meat who doesn't mean a thing to them? That may have an effect on negotiations for your next contract, right? Free agency exists. You have to go out of your way to make your players feel like valued members of a family and all that other touchy-feely crap.

If they don't fix it, some guys are going to be disgruntled, and not necessarily just the ones who go on twitter and make asses of themselves. Some guys just let things fester and stay pissed off until they get a chance to go elsewhere.

BloodBrother

I'm assuming they didn't think the IR players would react so strongly to a logistical decision. I doubt McCarthy was even involved in this, although he might have become involved and got them to change it when he heard of it.

This is HUGE for us. Considering how well B.J. has been playing you could argue it puts our best defensive player against their worst offensive player all night long. They're going to HAVE to double him all night and even then he's going to be disruptive. Over/under B.J. Raji 2 sacks? I'm going over.

J-Mike88
01-27-2011, 06:31 AM
I wouldn't count out Pouncey until I see him in scrubs on crutches before the game starts.

Did you guys know that LaMarr Woodley has the NFL Record for fastest player to get 10 sacks in NFL playoff history?

They already have the terror beast James Harrison, and then Woodley opposite him. Guy always gets single blocking because of Harrison, and for us, that's gonna be Bulaga the rookie which scares the crap out of me.

I think this is the difference between defenses. They have 2 beasts at OLB, we have one. We need another opposite Matthews.
Walden had one beast game, week 17. But I think he now has a high ankle sprain so we're down to our 5th ROLB. Why can't one of their top 2 OLB be out instead of 4 of ours?

I like our DL better than theirs, although theirs is great as well. I just wouldn't trade.
Both have great LB's, but because of Woodley, I'd take theirs.
Our DBs are better overall, but Polamalu is flatout awesome and comes up with big plays at the biggest times. We need Woodson to be the guy this time to do that.

I just found out I got tickets yesterday, so I will be at the game!
I know a lot of people going.... most are Packers fans.

But there are a lot of Steelers fans who live down here in Dallas..... the good thing is all Cowboys fans are anti-Steelers fans so we'll get their support too.

From McGinn: "Don't beat your head against the wall," the coach said. "They understand their gap control. Every gap is filled. If I was going to play the Steelers, I would not even waste my time getting in regular personnel and trying to run the ball on them."

In the 43rd Super Bowl, Arizona spread the field with a flotilla of wide receivers, rushed merely 12 times for 33 yards and kept the 360-pound Hampton off the field for all but 14 snaps.

Kurt Warner passed for 377 yards and three touchdowns (112.3 passer rating) http://www.jsonline.com/packerinsider/114693439.html

We need to follow that formula and I think MM will. He knows getting Hampton out is a good thing for us.
He knows we can throw short quick passes to take the place of runs, and to keep 92 and 65 from pinning their ears back and flying at Rodgers every time.

That passer rating for Warner in that thrilling Super Bowl, that's Rodgers AVERAGE passer rating in domes... 111.5. I think we should throw it about 50 times, and only run when they think we're passing it.

That's where I watched the NFCCG last week... it's a total Packer bar so you'll feel like you are in a section of Lambeau Field with a few hundreds of other crazy Packer fans... all dressed up like they're at the game.
Cars all over with Packer flags and stickers and other memorabillia.

I think they are having it on outside as well in the parking lot because there are so many people.... I'd go there if I wasn't going to the game. My parents are going to go.

It should be back up into the 50s which is average for this time of year. This 20-degree stuff now is bulls****.

XLV: The difference a year makes (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/23886/xlv-the-difference-a-year-makes)

Bush and Bell were on the field only because of injuries to players who began the year ahead of them on the depth chart. Capers seemed to be protecting them for much of the game by limiting his normally thick playbook. Roethlisberger used his innate pocket elusiveness to buy more than enough time for his receivers to get open. The Packers estimate they missed at least five potential sacks in the game.

Something interesting. The Steelers really only faced two offenses this season that in IMO compare to the Packers offense at least in passing offense. In week 8 they gave up 20 pts, 305 yds passing, and lost to the Saints. In week 10 they gave up 39 pts, 349 yds passing, and lost to the Patriots. I think the Packers are better on defense than both of those teams.

Where is everyone else? Stranded in snowy ditches?
The weather here in Dallas is HORRIBLE! It's impossible to say how it is without cursing left & right.
Monday night overnight we got rain then ice..... and since then, every day, it's been ice on roads about 80% of locations including most major highways.

They don't have the trucks to plow and sand.... very very few so they don't get most areas.

Now I woke up to 5 inches of snow on top of that s***t.

Jermichael Finley will be coming up on Mike & Mike...... let's hope he doesn't shoot himself in the mouth again.

Very curious to hear what Finley says. I hope he does the right thing and says nothing but good stuff about the Packers and if (when) the photo thing comes up he just says it got blown out of proportion and it's all good.

Anywhere I can listen to the clip online? Has it happened yet?

Definitely don't want to silence our players. I'm glad they brought up the photo thing, I just didn't like the timing. They will learn from this and become better teammates for it. If they don't, then they won't stay on the team. The photo thing was mostly a non-story, and there is always going to be a non-story being reported and updated 24/7 no matter what they do. I don't blame Twitter or the players, I blame the media. The Steelers are dealing with it right now because Ben took his lineman out for barbecue and a piano bar on a Tuesday and was back by curfew. I'd rather let our players have fun with being in the spot light and stay connected to the fans whenever possible.

Alright. Freaking out. Game is tomorrow. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. As much as we all want to say we're just happy to have made it, we're all going to be CRUSHED if we lose.

I'm going 24-23 Packers. I think they take the lead with about a minute and a half to go, Rodgers marches us down and we all hold our breath as Crosby hits a 42 yard field goal to win it with no time left.

Rodgers 20 of 27, 287 yards, 2 TDs + 1 rushing.
Big Ben 24 of 36 324 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

Rodgers takes MVP.

Your scenario would be EPIC, and the all-time best feeling.
But I might die of a heart attack and miss it.... so I'd rather have a Falcons-game type route!

Seeing Crosby come thru would be great.... but I'd pee my pants because I don't trust him, even in a dome.

This game will largely be decided by who has the better quarterback, and despite Roethlisberger having two rings, Rodgers is clearly the better quarterback. Roethlisberger having won twice already means very little, and I fully anticipate that Rodgers outplays him. Pittsburgh has a lot of guys that have been here before, but we have a lot of guys that really want this.

I don't want to sound overconfident (I'm feeling about 60%) but my prediction is 21-31 Green Bay with Rodgers as the clear-cut MVP.

Awesome first half. Collins was ignored all week and now he's playing with a chip on his shoulder. Shields and Woodson both have shoulder injuries correct? They better damn well be able to play. At worst one of them. I will never stop biting my nails if we spend 30 football minutes protecting a lead with one good corner and a secondary filled with guys on par with those who lost us the game last time we played the Steelers. Rodgers is so much better than Ben it's a joke. Well, I can't say it was obvious before but now that they are playing it isn't even close who is playing better.

Collins went to the ground (his knees) which was the issue.

I thought Collins celebrated with teammates first and then ran to the middle of the endzone and and slid on his knees, which would've been excessive celebration.

New rule to 2006:
Individual players are prohibited from using foreign objects or the football while celebrating. They are also prohibited from engaging in any celebrations while on the ground. A celebration shall be deemed excessive or prolonged if a player continues to celebrate after a warning from an official. Previously, players were not prohibited from using props or celebrating on the ground.
Reason for the change: Promotes sportsmanship.

Ok, so it was the sliding to his knees that warranted the flag. Still seems like it was called to the letter of the rule and not the spirit. Just glad it didn't matter in the end.

Starks actually averaged 4.7 yds/rush, including some clutch gains. He had some lapses in pass protection though. Fortunate that Rodgers didn't get knocked out on a couple of those. As with all rookies that's something he needs to improve.
