McDonald went soft almost a day after Ohio State offered, and he grew up an Ohio State fan. It's us or them.

I'm not sure why he's even including Iowa in the discussion. He had an Iowa offer before he had a Minnesota offer, and never seemed to care. I'd put their chances at less than 5%.

But who knows, high school kids are stupid.

Yea, that's what I don't get. Maybe he just felt "stupid" for not taking all his visits or something, but why all of a sudden does he up and want to visit Iowa? Meh, whatever. Hopefully we can keep Darboh in state, but probably not.

South Carolina is doing an exceptional job...I just hope to see us land some prominent QB and LB prospects sometime soon, though.

SCAR got a verbal committment from 4 star LB Kaiwan Lewis. Another NJ product, South Carolina is really doing a fine job in that NJ/PA area as of late. At 230 and growing, he adds some nice size to what has been a small SCAR LB corps. I'm excited.

We also signed 6'4 320 lb, 4 star OL, Joe Harris, as well.

South Carolina is cleaning up this year. Loooooooooove it. They're looking at at top 10 class this year.

Some good news coming in the wake of G.A. Mangus' arrest.

4* Simeon HS, IL OT Jordan Diamond just visited Iowa this weekend.

Last night/this morning, 3* Simeon HS, IL QB/ATH Robert Gregory received a scholarship offer from Iowa.

Our only QB offer was to Kiel, and Ferentz likes to take 1 QB per class. Looks like that spot is now Gregory's if he wants it and is intent on playing QB.

Also, 4* MN WR Andre McDonald has decommited from Minnesota and is looking at OSU, Iowa, and Vanderbilt.

bearsfan_51
08-03-2011, 11:06 AM
Gregory was also recently offered by Arkansas. He was looking very much like a Minnesota commit (to play receiver or DB since we already have two QBs in this class), not sure now.

I think we're still the favorites for McDonald based on his comments and others, but if not I'm still pretty sure he's a Buckeye, it's the whole reason he decommitted in the first place, because he grew up a Buckeye fan.

Yup, I just read this morning that it is believed that Arkansas is his leader. I also read that he wants to wait until after his senior year to decide, whereas Diamond has said he will choose soon. So it looks like it doesn't matter that we offered anyway.

I agree on McDonald. I feel like he's going to wait and OSU will eventually offer. But hopefully we can keep Darboh instate and it all becomes moot.

How's it looking for Will Johnson? Not much has been said about him and Iowa in a while, and just reading some stuff is he might be leaning toward Minnesota now. He's a big kid and would be a great addition at either TE or OT.

bearsfan_51
08-03-2011, 04:10 PM
OSU already offered. That's why he decommitted, so he could check them out.

I think Minnesota is favored for Johnson, but he also really likes Ole Miss (position coach or something). I think the lack of job security for Houston Nutt will keep him from going there, but I dunno. I'm surprised Auburn hasn't garnered more favor since he was born in the South.

I also don't think Johnson could add the frame for him to play tackle. Wisconsin asked him if he wanted an offer to play tackle and he said no.

That's really surprising. I know that Michigan has 22 commits already, but Schutt seems like a kid you'd make room for, especially considering they only have one DT commit.

The consensus seems to be...very good with Hamilton, good with Shumate, and about average with Wright. He seems to be the one more on the outside in terms of wanting to play with the rest of them, but some more momentum coming off the Carroo commitment could boost that up.

Yeah this is spot on. The Carroo committment also is going to pave the way for Devin Fuller to come also even though I'm not sure where he'll fit with us. He isn't a good fit now that we're going back to a pro style offense but if he wants to come they'll find room for him anywhere. Not many athletes like him.

It's taken 10 years but it is starting to happen. The players now speak of Rutgers as a place where they know everything is in place to win more than the past. They actually sound proud to go there and stay in state where in the past ND, BC, Miami, and so forth were the obvious choices to go if you were any good. All these Hs'ers are all friends also and they speak of how they want to make Rutgers a big time college program and right now they're backing it up by committing. The pieces are in place so this is definitely a big spring board year for the program again.

We have 1, Trey Stross.

McDonald was talking about Soup Cambpell, our WR coach, who happens to be the most prolific WR coach in college football. He's put 11 WR's into the league.

DJK would have made it, and McNutt will be a 2nd rounder at worst.

But...

McNutt is very pro ready, stands 6'4 220, runs a low 4.5, has huge hands, and is the owner of a 41" vertical.

He's our most pro ready prospect this year outside of Riley Reiff.

DJK would have made it, he was projected as a 3rd rounder before he decided to do his best Pablo Escobar impression.

I know you're mad about McDonald, but he's a Hawk.

Although told is usually wrong and full of ****, the size and vertical might be true. 40 is closer to 4.6.

But truthfully, a 41" vertical isn't going to really impress anyone. There are guys at 6'0 who can do that.

There's nothing special at all about McNutt, which is why he's a 4-7 round guy. Maybe he has a great senior year.

We have one of the best recruiting classes we've had in a while so far. The hiring of Holgorsen has already brought some nice recruits with some blue chips still on the radar. I think you will really see some action in 2013 with more blue chips.

As far as the 2012 class we already have 4* WR Deontay McManus out of Dunbar. Top 250 kid with a big body, 6' 2" 215, some teams like him better at safety but Holgorsen wants him here at WR which is what he wants to play.

We also landed 4* QB Ford Childress out of Texas who recently was promoted to the ESPN top 150. Kid is a legit talent and a great fit for his system, will be the starter after Geno leaves.

Overall we already have about 17 kids and last year we probably had 7 at this time. We are recruiting the Baltimore/MD area hard and doing a great job, lots of kids with talent from that area really want to play at WV. We always do well in Florida as well picking off the remaining talent. Hopefully the offense really blossoms and we lure some of the kids still looking to make a decision near signing day like a Cyrus Jones.

Farrell was interviewing Shumate and he listed his top 5 and totally forgot to mention Rutgers which was weird. He then said Rutgers is in his top 6 and him and all the Bosco kids might stick together.

Anyway on Fuller it's all going to come down if he wants to play QB. If he does I doubt he comes to Rutgers but if not he'll be here. A lot of the Jersey kids we already have committed are all close and they really are trying to build something here now so we'll see.

That includes Lambert who will also have Rutgers in his final 3. We have limited spots left so it's going to interesting.

Rushel Shell commits to Pitt

By Chris Harlan, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, October 14, 2011

The last time Pitt landed a star tailback from Hopewell, things turned out pretty well for the Panthers.

Now, they have another.

Hopewell senior Rushel Shell said today that he will commit to Pitt, giving the Panthers one of the top running back recruits in the nation. He had said his other finalist was Alabama, though he never visited Tuscaloosa.

In mid-August, Shell hinted that he was going to choose Pitt when he told the Tribune-Review he'd already made his college decision, and said it was "an average team on the rise" and somewhere he could "try to win a national title." For two months, he left Pitt supporters hoping he meant their Panthers.

Today he made it official.

Shell's commitment gives Pitt coach Todd Graham a marquee recruit, joining a 2012 class that already had four-star quarterback Chad Voytik of Cleveland, Tenn.

National recruiting websites rank Shell (5-11, 210) among the top five running backs. Scout.com calls him a five-star talent and ranks him No. 20 nationally. Rivals.com gives him four stars and ranks him No. 45.

By choosing Pitt, Shell followed the path taken in 1973 by Tony Dorsett, another Hopewell graduate. Dorsett led Pitt to a national championship in 1976 and won the Heisman Trophy as college football's top player.

Shell set the WPIAL career rushing record this season. A four-year starter, he now has 7,827 career yards entering tonight's nationally televised (6 p.m., ESPNU) game at Central Valley. This season, he has 1,059 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Shell planned to keep his decision a secret until tonight. Instead, he decided to make his announcement at an 8 a.m. press conference with local media.

Pitt now has eight recruits from the WPIAL or City League, including Fox Chapel lineman Adam Bisnowaty, Clairton wideout Trenton Coles, Upper St. Clair linebacker Dakota Conwell, Sto-Rox cornerback Marzett Geter, Allderdice lineman Tyrique Jarrett and Penn Hills wideout Corey Jones. Woodland Hills safety Jevonte Pitts, who enrolled at Milford Academy, also remains committed to Pitt.

Their verbal commitments are non-binding until Feb. 1, when National Letters of Intent can be signed.

Shell to Pitt was an absolute lock once OSU fell out of it. It became even more of a lock when he knocked up his GF and pretty much has to stay home. I'm glad Pitt landed him. He's big time and could win a Heisman. He's that good.

He would be starting for USC at LT next year and all but be a top 10 lock but he:

1.) Demands to play Defense
2.) De committed

Kids like James Wilder and Arik Armstead who WANT to play out of position anger me.

Wait, what?

From what FSU 247 says, reports do not match what he's been telling the coaches. He'll be at FSU for an unofficial visit this weekend vs. N.C. State, then back again in January for an official. He's already used his officials to OU and LSU, so I am not worried about him.

If you have actually seen Wilder play this season you wouldn't be saying he's playing out of position. Admittedly he is the second best Freshman RB FSU has, but Devonta Freeman was a 5* talent in his own right.

MassNole

James Hamilton, a massive DL/OL 3* switched his commitment from FSU to USF. This is actually a very good thing for FSU as it frees up a much needed scholarship to use elsewhere, such as on Leonard Williams. Basically he had an offer conditional on maintaining the level of play he had at the summer camp, which hasn't happened this season due to a back injury (which is compounded by his 335-340lb body). He also wants to play right away and at FSU it would have been a solid 3 years before he saw meaningful snaps, if ever with the players around him such as Timmy Jernigan, Cam Erving, Niles Lawrence Stamp, Derrick Mitchell, and 2012 commit Justin Shanks (and likely Eddie Goldman).

it's hardly the coach's opinion. fsu wouldn't have gotten wilder unless they told him he'd play running back. and look just about anywhere, any recruiting service. it was pretty common knowledge that wilder was much more highly coveted as a linebacker than as a running back

i don't think he's going to be a bad running back or anything, just that he had mega star potential at linebacker

FSU preferred him at DT, where he could have been a space eater at 330lbs. I think USF is recruiting him at DT now as well where he could play next year. I don't blame him for wanting to get early playing time, something that just wouldn't have happened at FSU.

And he has mega star potential at RB as well. As for his recruitment, he was told he'd have the chance to play RB first, but if that didn't work out he'd move to LB. And lets not pretend when Urban Meyer was at UF that he wasn't telling him he'd play RB at UF as well. Could he have been a stud LB, probably, but he can be just as good at RB, especially if coached up by Eddie Gran for 4 years. He just doesn't lose yards when running and always falls forward. At RB he is the perfect compliment to Devonta Freeman and soon to be 5* RB Mario Pender.

i'm not, i just think meyer was telling him something along the lines of 'you'll get a chance to play rb' which really was just him saying 'once you get here, you're going to play linebacker'. obviously that wasn't the only factor, but it was a major swing in fsu's favor.

and i disagree that he has megastar potential. i think he has a little better than brandon jacobs potential at rb. jacobs was a freak athlete in his own right, but a 6'2, 230ish lb. linebacker running a 4.6-4.8 forty sounds a lot better than a runningback doing the same

3* RB David Smith from Illinois, and bff of current Iowa commit Mo Flemming, is visiting Iowa this weekend and has already said Iowa is his favorite. He also said that one of the top Illinois prospects 4* DE Faith Ekakitie also has Iowa as his favorite after visiting last weekend and once earlier in the season.

Add that to 4* PA RB Greg Garmon supposedly saying he's down to Iowa and UNC, and this might be shaping up to be quite a nice little class for us. Now if only we can get 4* Iowa WR Amara Darboh...

IIRC, Garmon said that UNC was his dream school and his number 1. I don't know if that's changed due to him being unsure on what is going on there, but I think that is what I read.

Yea, I'm pretty sure I had heard that as well. I never really even thought we had a chance in the first place, but he has claimed his top 2 were UNC and Iowa as of like the middle of October I believe. He used to be real high on OSU earlier in the season, but he visited and hasn't talked about them since.

Like you said, not sure if that changes with the other stuff going on, but I'm perfectly happy being a top choice even if he doesn't choose us. I think we'll get Smith either way, and probably another lower ranked RB, but Garmon would be awesome.

Iowa picks up a pair of commits in back to back days. 6'2 190 3* WR Greg Mabin out of Calvary Christian in Ft. Lauderdale. Picked Iowa over offers Tulane and Jacksonville St.

Also picked up an unranked DE commit from the awesomely named Daumantas Venckus out of Cypress Bay in Weston, FL. At 6'4 220, I would wager the staff feels like he can put on a bit of weight otherwise no idea where he will play because it won't be DE.

It was pretty set in stone that before all this **** broke out, Spence was going to PSU IMO. I still believe he's very interested but it all comes down to LJ. I wouldn't be apposed to keeping Vandy and LJ on the staff since I doubt Bradley would want to stay if he is not the HC.

From what Armani Reeves has said, schools have been very respectful towards that to him. Obviously he's not as hyped up as Spence, but I still don't think teams are doing that. I could be wrong because there could be some really skum bag coaches, so who knows.
