...teams wait until their franchise quarterback is retired before they draft a future franchise quarterback? Look at the Packers for example. They drafted Aaron Rodgers and now it appears he'll sit on the bench for 3 years.

no you should train the next guy so he is ready to step in when the franchise qb retires

There is no cookie cutter way of doing it. Each situation is unique. You may not think so, but Rodgers has been learning plenty during the last few years. A lot of QB's fail when thrown straight into the fire, while others can handle it. But all of them need a few years to mature and realize their full potential.

Yep. Brett Favre is definitely the exception to the rule, it's a big step backwards if you have to rely on a rookie QB to start a season.

I like what the Jets did. Kellen Clemens has been learning the system and learning some things for Pennington. It would have been bad if he started right away. I'd say Kellen will be ready in 2009.

A QB of the future should always be on the team. A QBOTF isn't always a first round pick, it just needs to be a development guy that can grow into a starting QB.

How people forget that Chad Pennington didn't start a game until his 3rd season. He was a 1st rounder also.
Plus Green Bay probably thought Brett Favre would have been retired by now when they selected Rogers.

And Chad never started a full season until last season. So whats the point. Its not like Chad is Tom Brady or Peyton Manning to prove this guys point wrong.

The point is Chad Pennington was in the same situtation as Rogers. Neither started a game in their first two years in the league as 1st round draft picks. Sometimes you have to wait for a 1st round QB to get a chance to play. You don't start all over by drafting someone else and start the process over again. Especially where Green Bay sits and can't get a blue chip rookie QB.
And Chad Pennington is a top 10 NFL QB when healthy. He is one of the most accurate passers around. And may I say he had a better year than Eli last year despite no talent RB, two rookie OLman, a twice surgically repaired arm. and on a less talented team than the Giants. The Jets alway do better with Pennington than without him.
And Pennington started every game he was 1st string in 2002.

The fact that he had a better year than Eli has nothing to do with it. Although that is at least debatable. The bottom line is that Pennington is in the minority in this day of age when it comes to QBs. When you are a first round pick most likely you will be on the field by year 2.

There is exceptions to the rule. Rogers got stuck behind Favre. The Jets thought they could win with Vinnie.

When Chad Pennington is healthy he's a top 15 guy at best. When he's injured the Jets turn into a crap shoot they have another 4-12 season. They were smart and invested for the future when Pennington does go down they won't be in that situation again.

Let's see here. Pennington had a better QB rating, led a less talented team to the playoffs in a better conference.
You are a dumbass if you think the Jets even had a chance at the playoffs in the beginning of last season. Or the Jets had a more talented team than the Giants.

The Jets have a much easier schedule, weren't ravaged with injuries on offense, and Chad has a better receiver core and better OC. He also threw the same ratio of TDs to INTs even though he wasn't asked to force things as much as Eli is.
Look, I like Chad, and I root for him. But youre not talking to someone in Cali who just has the stat sheet to go by. Ive watched all the games. If you think Chad is better than Eli, your football knowledge is even less than what we all assume it to be already.

I'm not really going to argue this because we are getting off topic, but you can't say the Jets played in a better conference as reasoning. Yes the AFC is better, except the Jets didn't play anyone good. Their schedule was awfully easy. It wasn't your typical AFC schedule.

No. When you have a franchise quarterback like Brett Favre and he's getting up there in years, you never know when there is going to be a freak accident and you have to hve somebody ready togo. It's better to have the quarterback sit and draft him early, then wait and throw him in the fire right away when he's not ready.

My question to you would be, do the Packers really want Rodgers to still be sitting and learning or is Favre handcuffing the orginization right now.

The Jets schedule is not as easy as you are making it out to be. This is not the NFC North or NFC West they play in. No one epected them to be in the playoffs. They were. Teams play the schedule they get stuck with. And I would not call a schedule with New England twice, Indianapolis, Chicago, Jacksonville easy.

I really think the Packers believed that Favre's drive for the game was starting to diminish and the longest he would last would be this past season. The thing is now Favre's returning and the Packers still have a first round pick riding the pine for atleast another season and maybe even two. Rodgers could be 4 or 5 years into the league before he gets an oppurtunity, but with Brett Favre's unpredictability it was still the right move by Green Bay to choose Rodgers when they did.

Is Chad more talented than Eli? No. Does he play smarter? Yes. Eli shouldn't be forcing passes as much. Especially when his team has a LEAD.
And I wouldn't say the Jets have a better receiving corp. They don't have a tight end like Shockey. NO RB like Tiki. You are sounding like a dumbass or a fangirl here.
I'm not from Cali and I saw Eli overthrowing receivers repeatedly, forcing the ball into tight coverage. Even the announcers wonder about his decisions.

Chad Pennington is a smarter football player but Eli is more gifted. If Eli had the decision making abilities of Pennington he could be a lethal QB but he still makes too many bone headed mistakes.

They were freak deals, it's not like they were random little hits that turned into something bigger. He's thrown 60 TD's in the 2 seasons following the 1st one. I'm not the least bit concerned about it being some ongoing thing. I'd much rather it be two knee injuries than two concussions.

Ideally, you want a guy in the wings, just in case. It's very rare that it's a good idea to start a QB as a rookie, they can turn out great, but odds are your season won't(Exception: Big Ben, but his supporting cast was great). what the Broncos were probably trying to do was ideal, have Cutler getting ready while Plummer starts for another year or two. Of course, there was no way of knowing Plummer would be awful.

teams are better off taking a QB before their current one leaves. you need to give them some time instead of just throwing a rookie QB in to a starting position. the Packer's situation didn't turn out that well but Rodgers is still learning and he should start next season.

You shouldn't ever wait till a player is retired to take the next man up. The packers took rogers when everyone thought Favre only a about 8 games left in the tank.
Ideally they should've waited and taken Jay Cutler. Thing is though, there's a lot of money tied up in a bench warmer.
