The inaugural world baseball classic is now upon us and I created this thread to see if anyone cares. If you dont it works. The most interesting thing about this "classic" s that South Africa mite not score a run
No Pedro = No pitching = No win for the Dominican.
USA's bullpen will hold the Vlad-less Dominican lineup in check to win the championship.
USA! USA!

Its not only Pedro....a couple of other guys pulled out of the classice as well.
Quick question.....how can u leave my sleeper pick Venezuela off the poll. Look at the roster. With the Dominican's injuries they could take that part of the bracket.

Dominican will do the best out of the 4 you listed, but I think Venezuala will win.
How dare you not put the Netherlands in that poll. Andruw Jones will hit a homer run every at bat and win the WBC for that team.

I like baseball but I have no interest in seeing ROger Clemens destroying some lineups or pitching 65 pitches, and players not going all out. It will be extra boring.

Players not going all out? Are you kidding me? These guys are playing for their country. I know most of the latin country are in it to win. And if you say the US players are not gonna try they're best, then you are ********.

The DR won today with Ortiz going off for two home runs. I am saying they won even though Venezeula will bat in the bottom of the ninth.

These A and Double A players from other countries are playing as hard as they can against our big league guys because they want to earn a roster spot. Our team doesn't give a dam about this game. Theres probably like 1 or 2 people who are great at their position on our team.

How about Puerto Rico? Korea could be a real threat as well, due to their pitching.
Btw, Japan got hosed today. I don't really care who wins this, as it doesn't show much (I mean, 1 game against each team doesn't really mean much, at least 2 would make a bit more sense), but that runner tagged up today. That was just a blown call.

I was watching that game...that definately was a blown call. Peavy didn't look too sharp today, though. Hopefully Dontrelle bounces back after his last outing. Seems like he's either really good or really bad. He'll either pitch a shutout or he'll get shelled, hopefully it's not the latter.

Here's my big problem with the call. Schneider contested, and the umpire still said no. What did Buck Martinez say to the home plate ump to help change the third base ump's opinion of what happened? Because the third base ump obviously has the closest view. If it was overturned on the first challenge, then fine, it was just an error, which happens. But now, while I don't think it's a conspiracy, the fact that it went through that process opens it up to bigger questioning.
I'm pulling for Japan. I think they should beat Mexico, and maybe they'll take Korea more seriously this time. I'd like to see them play the US again.

After that joke of a call yesterday, I was rooting for Korea today. They just dominated the United States over with better fundamental baseball. It was funny hearing the excuses, such as "The United States is using an all-star team (or something like that)". No they aren't (Al Leiter's on it after all, nothing against Al, but he's done). Also, they've got setup men (Timlin/Majewski), leadoff options (Jeter/Winn), defensive talent.
Anyhow, pool B is looking interesting.

I think the WBC could be really good, if they did it correctly. Obviously, this is the first run. I've watched a bunch of it, but a couple percolating thoughts.
1. Have a more diverse umpiring crew.
2. Have more than 1 game against each pool team. 1 game doesn't really show that much for baseball. I'd like to see each team, within the pool, play each other twice.
3. Mix the pools up for the 2nd round. That is, split up the teams that played each other in round 1 (for example, split Japan and Korea up to different regions).

You got that one right. I follow baseball, the minors, and what not. But the MLB draft? No. that's too much work to try and even follow. I'll occasionally check around, but nah, trying to know high school and big league talent is way too hard.

or they could play evey four years for the title... oh wait they already do that in the olympics.
If they really want a wbc do it in january when nothing is going on cause this screws everything up for teams to build chemistry.

I don't buy that chemistry argument one sec. Basically, they are missing early spring training, when most teams aren't taking the games seriously anyways. I'm not sure how much chemistry is lost. Most of these guys are established guys in their clubhouses, so it's not as if they need to adjust and fit.
Actually, I think the fact that they are playing WBC games may help individual players earlier in the year. It's more serious than ST, so it's forcing them to lock in and pay attention. Heck, I'm sure Reds fans would love to see Griffey Jr. do as well as he's been doing.
On a side note, I don't buy this injury argument that Steinbrenner has thrown out there. I think the risks of playing in ST are about equal to that of playing in these games.
