at this point, is it safe to say that it will come down to fairley, dareus, miller, or peterson for our top pick? bowers seems unlikely with his medical issues and i haven't heard anything about us having interest in quinn.

Yeah, I've got the link up above.

I think it is good business for teams to take a close look at a prospect they like at every position. This is about finding gems in a big pile of dirt, rocks and ****. You'd hate to have a guy you thought might be a special player end up a superstar on another team because you passed on taking a closer look due to needs at other positions.

In this particular case, who knows? Maybe Jacksonville saw enough positive from Tebow that they've indicated the potential for a trade is there. Maybe the new coaching staff wants to cover the bases in the quest for "their guy".

Here's last year's:

http://draftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2099732&#post2099732

Xanders basically said the smokescreening from Shanahan's day is a thing of the past - they now bring in the guys they like for workouts. I think the list from last year (which is incomplete) is evidence of that.

I'm sure they were. 5-tech was a major area of need and there was a shortage of options available (hence them taking a close look at Odrick and Alualu).

I was just about to post a tweet from Don Banks (who is there) on the same subject when I saw your message. Here it is anyway:

Sounds like Gabbert did well.

Due diligence is the name of the game... and if it scares some other teams at the same time, so be it.

Only way taking a QB high up is going to happen is if Tebow gets traded for good value. IMO, that could only happen if JAX initiated the discussion. I don't see this happening.

Just curious what you Denver Broncos fans think about Elway talking up a QB at number 2? Is this smokescreen? is he serious? Tebow is basically the same QB as Cam Newton (and the other two qbs mentioned in the below article)who for some reason is being talked about going #1 overall yet Tebow was not widely even considered a first round pick last year.

The new regime is doing its homework, which is wise when you've got the opportunity to pick pretty much any player in the draft. I think their preference is to go for defense, though.

If looking at QB's makes other teams nervous, well, that's a nice side benefit.

Drafting a QB in the first round in two consecutive seasons? Not going to happen, especially if you have one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Not to mention, Tim Tebow is so marketable and - in my opinion - promising, I find it hard to believe that the Broncos would be willing to trade him away after 3 starts.

I'm 99% positive that this is a drafting ploy to generate interest in the #2 pick (for a possible trade-down). Depending on the picks we get in a trade-down, it might be worth it. But I personally prefer that we stay at the #2 overall spot.

According to NFL Network's Mike Mayock, "everybody in the league" feels it would be an "upset" of the Broncos don't draft Alabama DT Marcell Dareus with the No. 2 pick in the draft. "Everybody in the league" is apparently already resigned to the fact that Carolina is drafting a quarterback. Dareus easily makes the most sense for a Denver team with perhaps the poorest defensive tackle depth chart in football. Dareus would give the Broncos another front-seven building block between young defensive end starters Elvis Dumervil (RE) and Robert Ayers (LE).
despite my love for peterson, i'd be more than happy with this

Have they worked out Anthony Sherman? He is a really underrated player (best FB in the draft), John Fox uses the FB in his offense. He had a good one in Brad Hoover and also used a fourth round pick two years ago to draft his replacement - Tony Fiametta.

I am working on a 7 round mock draft and was going to put Sherman to the Broncos in the 4th round but they don't have a 4th or 5th round pick. I know they have Spencer Larsen who is a very versatile player.

Will the Broncos be employing the same offensive philosophy? The Broncos need an RB and TE (although FOX never seemed to have an impact TE during his tenure in Carolina).

I do believe this draft will be focused on rebuilding the Broncos defense.

I think this draft is deep enough on the D-Line that the Broncos will go with Peterson at number 2 and address the defense line in the second.

i don't think we need a TE from this draft, but if we take one, i think it'll be in that 6th round area, as that's where fox has usually gotten his guys. yes, i know he's not the gm here.

Speaking of later round TE's, here's some interesting stuff from the guy at Portland State regarding his visit with our TE coach:

http://www.jbscouting.com/index.php/interviews/3-interviews/1668-thomas-dj-5

The tight end coach Barone came in from Denver on the 16th and we had a really good meeting I felt. Compared to other visits it was a lot about their plays and formations and see how well you can remember things. This meeting was more about what are you looking for when you get to the line and what are you identifying and picking up on with the defense based on alignments and where eyes are. It was more what I could pick up intuitively about the game.

Lots of action at HQ this week:

http://twitter.com/johnelway

Busy week ahead with 13 of our 30 allotted draft prospect visits scheduled to meet with us at our facility.

Da'Quan Bowers, Nick Fairley and Von Miller are among the players that we are bringing in this week.

I'd like to see the other 10... most of the ones I've posted were private workouts, which are not necessarily visits to the team facilities.

Namy

this makes me think that we're almost certainly looking very seriously into a trade down or two.

Given Elway's continuing comments about not having a franchise QB, I'd agree. He really wants to trade down.

I can understand the reasoning why, but I just don't feel like it's super-necessary to accumulate one or two more draft picks. It's going to take more than one year to turn this team around. Draft quality is more important than quantity, and with the #2 overall pick, we're in a prime position to do that. Get the right players this year, and build upon that foundation the following year.

Although, if by "trading down," we're trading our pick to either Buffalo or Cincinnati, I'm all for it.

Besides Bowers, the Broncos will meet today with linebacker Von Miller, defensive tackle Nick Fairley on Wednesday and quarterback Cam Newton on April 19.

The Broncos also have two picks in the second round, which is why they visited with Temple safety Jaiquawn Jarrett on Monday and are bringing in linebacker Mason Foster of Washington, defensive tackle Marvin Austin of North Carolina and Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick this week.

It would seem this may not be far from the truth. The team worked out one of my Hokies, Andre Smith, who's a very good blocker but isn't going to put up big numbers as a receiver.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us work out Lee Smith from Marshall as well... another guy with decent hands who really shines as a run blocker.

Both Dareus' and Peterson's status upgraded to "Team Visit":

http://twitter.com/johnelway/status/57526359236427776

We'll have 13 more draft prospects visiting us over the next 10 days, including DL Marcell Dareus and CB Patrick Peterson.

So that puts our team visits at:

* QB - Colin Kaepernick - Nevada (team visit)
* QB - Cam Newton - Auburn (team visit)
* RB - Daniel Thomas - Kansas State (team visit)
* WR - Edmond Gates - Abilene Christian (team visit)
* DT - Nick Fairley - Auburn (team visit)
* DT - Marcell Dareus - Alabama (team visit)
* DT - Marvin Austin - North Carolina (team visit)
* DE - Da'Quan Bowers - Clemson (team visit)
* LB - Von Miller - Texas A&M (team visit)
* LB - Casey Matthews - Oregon (team visit)
* LB - Akeem Ayers - UCLA (team visit)
* LB - Mason Foster - Washington (team visit)
* CB - Patrick Peterson - LSU (team visit)
* FS - Jaiqwan Jarrett - Temple (team visit)

That's a pretty lopsided distribution... I don't think anyone needs to be worried about us not drafting defense early and often.

A big target with good enough hands to play safety valve is sufficient for our scheme. We don't need a TE-as-WR kind of guy.

I think we're all getting tired of that one. If we don't bring him in for a visit, it isn't happening. Fox seems quite happy with late-round TE's and we've got some relatively unproven guys already who could still turn out to be effective with the benefit of a more consistent offensive approach.

I'm not 100% sure on the Watkins one, so maybe 25/30. I keep hearing that Bruce Carter (OLB - North Carolina) visited without having any source to link - he certainly fits what John Fox wants from a LB. Another guy I've heard about is Anthony Costanzo (OT - Boston College), but again, no source.
