So my best friend (from Jersey, goes to BU) is living in North Carolina this summer for an internship. Hubbercraft's style has always been band tees, jeans, and cargo shorts, with the occasional polo when necessary. The kid rocks a grizzly beard, and is probably the best person to party with I know.

Anyway he wrote this "letter to the editor" concerning cargo short wearers in the South. He said he wrote it sarcastically, and then it got put up on some frat douche website. Hes getting ripped apart in the comment section and has already received some hilarious facebook messages.

My question to you fine gentlemen is are cargo shorts out of style?

one of the fb convos hes had.

c.j. aikman: You cargo short wearing geed. I would haze you untill you can't breath anymore.

me: did they ever teach you what sarcasm is on the farm? you either can't take or can't understand a joke. go play with your cattle.

cj: Sorry geed, It's a ranch,It's way nicer than your little Cape Cod liberal ****, but since you're the yankee geed that you are, you wouldn't now what a ranch is. The South would haze you hard, but you're probably in one of those non-hazing fraternities. Plus Boston blows dick. Go Rangers! And The South Will Rise Again.Go die geed.

me: you may be illiterate.

cj: Hahah i may be illiterate but, at least I'm not a cargo short wearring geed.

me: wow. several people have messaged me to give me **** but out of all them you are by far the dumbest. congratulations. i'm sure losing your virginity to a steer was magical. perhaps under the moonlight after mom and dad went to sleep? i bet a nostalgic tear is rolling down your fat cheek just thinking about it

cj: Hah, Pretty funny, so why don't you come down to Texas, so I can show you how a true fraternity man conducts himself, or you can stay in Boston and stay the cargo short wearing gdi that you are.

me: you're right. you've convinced me. i repent. with hard work and a little bit of luck maybe i can be just like you. if i have any questions along the way i'll surely bring them to you

*cj aikman sent you a friend request

the ironic thing is he was born and raised in Houston before he moved to switzerland then jersey haha

As a person born and raised in the South (Louisiana), I can only hang my head in shame at the responses this Southerner had. "The South will rise again"? All I could do was shake my head at that comment. That is lackadaisical, redneck propaganda if I've ever heard (and trust me, I've heard plenty).

I would like to know what a "geed" is. Having lived 28 years on Earth and pledged to a fraternity, I have never once come across such terminology. I was hazed relentlessly and never once, nor have I ever, held it as a badge of honor that I was "honored" in such tradition. It's archaic and a way for insecure males to emasculate themselves upon other insecure males. It's one of the lessons I learned while pledging.

I don't understand this immense amount of "Southern" pride that this person speaks of. In Louisiana we have no such thing and I might go so far as to say that the entire South lacks individualism outside of accent, food, and manners. We say "ma'am and sir", talk somewhat funny to those not uses to it, and use different seasonings (depending on the region/state), but in no way, shape, or form are mature, modern, sophisticated Southerners still using the noun/adjective "yankee" in a derogatory sense.

Who cares which region you dwell or were born in. We're all, for the most part, typical in our senses. What I do take offense in is the lack of capitalization when it comes to proper nouns. That's truly irksome. However, the ignorance of the Southerners statements far supersedes his properly grammatical sentences.

As a matter of fact, I wear cargo shorts. Several of my friends wear cargo shorts. Several of my friends also wear jean shorts (not the cut-off variety). It's the style. You have to be comfortable and light-weight down here. Who cares what shorts you wear? Girls wear shorts so short that the pockets are exposes and I don't see anybody calling them out on their fashion faux-pas.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. As a former Gamma Delta Iota, I could have helped to clarify.
First, There is nothing wrong with cargo shorts unless they are the excessively long ones. Then you are treading dangerous ground.
Secondly, I didn't detect sarcasm in the article, but perceived more of a rant.

Nobody has gotten a hand job in cargo shorts since 'nam!

"geed" is a really dumb way to say GDI. And GDI is a way to refer to some one not in a fraternity. It stands for God Damn Independent. People say it at my school but I don't think its really that insulting to people who aren't greek. I have several friends who aren't in a fraternity and they call themselves GDI's

Not all stereotypes are false.

You're not completely wrong. I know a lot of guys in fraternities that are like that. But they're the minority. I only say this because I was in a fraternity and I know how it is.

And no I'm not a trust fund kid. My parents didn't go to college and they have blue collar jobs.

CJSchneider
06-26-2011, 03:22 PM
I think the problem was the length of the shorts, not the style. Those shorts that are too long to be shorts, but too short to be pants deserve every bit of harassment the wearer receives.

The fratsters don't like cargo shorts because they think everyone should wear the short-short polo khaki shorts with only two pockets. They should be worn with long-sleeve, neon colored polo shirts and big cheap looking plastic sunglasses. Everyone should also have the bowl/swoop haircut and drive plain white SUVs and trucks and listen to nothing but country music. Then you should always roofie girls at the mixers. They dig that.

Still doesn't make any sense. You would think they would appreciate the extra pockets for roofie concealment purposes.

So weird that i haven't worn cargo shorts since i was about 8 and would never even consider it. I wear shorts nearly all the time (except for about 3 or 4 months through winter) basically because i'm either in the water or very close to it

I wear boardshorts such as these

Jean shorts such as these

And for people my age they definitely do not have the same negative connotations that they seem to have in the US.

And i dunno, walk shorts? such as these

Nothing is wrong with cargo shorts, but wearing board shorts or basketball shorts out everywhere looks lazy (just like girls who wear pajamas or sweat pants, looks gross) and silly.

Basketball shorts are for basketball or other physical activities.

Official things I do with my Cargo Shorts Power Rankings(week one edition);

1. Make people from frats buttmad without realizing it.

2. Have an extra pocket for my $350 phone that I don't want getting scratched.
3. Pocket for car keys, which often get jabbed into leg when combined with wallet pocket.
4. Walk around in comfort.
5. Generally not give a ****. They're shorts. I probably looked at them for 20 second before buying them.

Trust me, a girl would rather date a guy that gets his clothes from J Crew than some guy that either still wears cargo shorts (and is not 15) or some guy who wears some trendy **** with a dragon on it.

Couldn't have said it any better.

gotta get a better backpack. i sweat like crazy, but ever since i got my expedition pack, it's not an issue. then again, who carries *anything* for a half day hike (aside from like, wallet, smokes, whatever)?

Stoners who don't have room in their pockets...

If we're going on a longer hike I'm taking my back pack, although it is nice to walk around once you've set up camp with your **** on you.

So while having a million pockets may or may not be practical, cargo shorts look fine as well. I still refuse to see what is so ugly about them. If you are a lower or middle class guy, I dunno if you would feel comfortable wearing flat fronts. I personally don't like those because I am not a Country Club member. Flat fronts are definitely an upper class pair of shorts, and most people who wear them are spoon-fed rich white kids.

Not really. They're just shorts with the appropriate amount of pockets for everyday life.

Lol this is ridiculous. Who really cares about cargo shorts? You either wear them or you don't. Who the **** is anyone to call them a fashion nightmare.

This is a ******* fashion police failure.

I have cargo shorts... I have khakis... I have straight-front shorts. I wear whichever whenever I feel like. I won't wear jorts though I think those things are hideous (but you see just an opinion, I could not give a damn if my friend wears them).

I really want to know what girl will not go out with you because you wear cargo shorts. They do not exist lol. If a guy is good-looking he can wear ripped sweat and look like a bum, but women would still be attracted to him though probably at a lesser extent than if he was well-kept.

Source: This is coming from a guy who has evolved from a guido, and instead has joined the ranks of the casual Ralp Lauren style of dress.

What kind of expedition backpack do you have? I'm gonna have to invest in one soon and I've been looking around.

just an rei brand pinnacle (http://www.rei.com/product/778437/rei-pinnacle-40-pack). the amount of **** i had to lug up kilimanjaro meant that i couldn't really use one of the vented day pack style packs, but this fit my back well enough to keep some solid airflow once we were out of the rainforest.

i liked ones similar to this (http://www.rei.com/product/778463/rei-lookout-40-pack) for a standard camping trip (hike in/out), since i could easily fit a summer bag into it, with whatever else i needed, but the bigger style (like this (http://www.rei.com/product/795513/rei-mars-80-pack)) is what i need for winter/cold weather, since the 0-degree bag is *really* bulky (comparatively).

really though, you need to go and get fitted at a store. there's so much variation. i had to try on like, 15 before i found one that fit right on my hips and wouldn't have annihilated my shoulders by the second day.

I think you just answered your own question - they're ugly because they make you look like you belong to the lower class. Think about it - if you're a woman, are you going to be attracted to someone who looks wealthy and successful, or someone who wears the same clothes they did when they were 16?

I think the entire conversation assumes that we are talking about wearing shorts when shorts are socially acceptable.

No, I never said or implied that. I have cargo shorts. I was simply saying that flat front shorts are shorts with the as many pockets as the majority of people in everyday life actually use, which is why that's what I generally wear. I don't need the extra pockets, so I don't buy shorts with them. Although yes the upper class wears them, I don't see why they should be considered 'upper class'.

**** that. i'm so ironic, i use a duct-taped denim messenger bag. and i show up to major client sites with it (i think i actually offended the san jose city council when i didn't stop pulling red bulls out of it for the duration of an 8 hour meeting. also because my hair was like, 12 inches long. they were probably thinking i should gtfb to half moon).

Seriously. I know it gets hot but if you've gotta be someplace slightly dressed up then you shouldn't be wearing shorts and you should break out some nice summer pants. Personally I love wearing pants in the summer because I've got a few really good pairs of light and breezy summer slacks.

Really? How much stuff do you keep in your pockets? I've usually got my phone, cigs, lighter, key, wallet and a thing of nasal spray, I have sinus issues at the very least. Sometimes you do some other things, then there's odds n ends like hair ties, a water bottle, screw driver, etc. The basic 4 pockets are kinda not ideal for me as I have stuff in all but one rear pocket, I hate putting anything in those pockets other than my wallet. I do where a lot of slacks and don't wear cargo pants anymore unless I'm going to be working outside, but it's not because they have the ideal set of pockets.

$75? Hot damn.

Yeah, I've tried on about a half dozen. One fit incredibly well, but cost upwards of $200+, so that was out of the question. We're planning a hiking/camping/fishing trip to one of the lake areas of SW Virginia. Definitely not Kilimanjaro, but the more we can carry, the better. You really went up Mt. Kilimanjaro?

yeah, a few years ago on a whim. i looked at the expensive ones, but ultimately, for what i use it for, i didn't need all of the 'expensive' features. bag's been really durable so far. the 40 cl's or whatever it can hold should be plenty for one person's worth of stuff for a trip like that, though you may have to strap the tent and sleeping bag to the outside, depending on how much 'junk' (e.g. other food, bulky cooking gear, etc) you want to carry in.

So, I'm moving south in a month, am I allowed to wear cargo shorts?

If it were up to me I'd just wear basketball shorts/gym shorts all day because of absurdly comfortable they are, but I suppose people frown upon that sort of thing. Someone compared it to women wearing sweatpants but I whole heatedly disagree. They are far more awesome looking.

Damn it, I was going to purchase some new shorts for the move south but now I'm afraid to be murdered for wearing cargo shorts. I don't see how people can dislike them. Sure they have a lot of pockets, but they look classy. Flat shorts look ridiculously odd and usually come up above the knees which also feels wrong.

I don't take issue with either, but flat shorts do look better to me. Especially if the cargo shorts are the kind where the pockets really stick out.
