With Evans & Williams gone now the load will be his fulltime. Wilson is not your typical back because he can do it all. He may not be Reggie Bush but he is the new Mr. All Purpose. Last year Wilson racked up on 619 yds on 113 carries with a long of 68 yds including 5 tds. Also coming out of the backfield he shows his hands are legit catching 15 balls for 234 yds with 4 tds.......Mr. All Purpose is just not an offensive guy because he returns kicks as well..... 584 yds on 22 returns with the ability to go the distance his long is 92 yds with 2 tds.....Wilson is really a special back because Tech RB's are not known as speed guys, Wilson is a blazer who can run in the 4.3 range. If he does decide to come out in the 2012 class I expect him to be a steal in that draft.

One of the most intriguing RBs of the 2011 college season.

If he's got his weight @210# this season, I see David WIlson making a hard push for 1st team ACC.
If he comes out, the 2012 class is going to be beyond deep!!

Nothing wrong with liking different players and their skill-set around the country, but I can't openly root for anybody not wearing a Niner or a UVA jersey. If your not with me, your against me is how I see it. 757 affilated or otherwise. Wilson is very good back but I hope we beat the **** out of him when he comes to Charlottesville Nov. 26th. And I'll be cheering every minute of it. That goes for him and any other local kid who chooses to align themselves with another program other than UVA football. And Wilson's not even from the 7 Cities so Im not really understanding the connection. That's like rooting for a kid from the 804 knowing us and Richmond/Petersburg have always had nice little rivarly going on when it comes to athletics.

I love Wilson. He is really explosive and has speed much better than the past few backs VT has had. Only issue would be if he can translate well to the NFL, or be stuck as a niche/role player (not that that's a bad thing).

I go to UMiami, but really, I like who I like, no preference for any team.

Wilson looking good for far this year but I've read that he lacks patience and vision. Definitely game breaking speed but is he just a poor man's Reggie Bush?

Wilson is a more conventional RB in that he's not trying to juke 11 guys once he gets the handoff. He makes his cut and goes, not really a dancer.

I still think Wilson and Lamar Miller are very similar players, but IMO Miller has slightly better big play ability.

As far as measurables I think they're really close. Both are probably going to run in the 4.39-4.45 range predraft.

Put it this way, if my team needed a RB and either Miller or Wilson was already off the board, I'd feel fine taking the other RB left and be happy about it.

This isn't really meant to be a knock but when I watch him play, it seems like he's an athlete who happens to play RB opposed to a RB who is athletic....if that makes any sense.

Yeah.

I like the nickname Blind Barry.

He's so ridiculous athletically but lacks some natural instincts. He has great hands, can block, all that... so it's not that he isn't a complete back. But if he had Ryan Williams' vision =0

shylo3716 Thoughts on the Thomas Jones UVA comparison?
Dude, forget about the comparisons for once! Who gives a rats balls who one might be like in the future. Is he that much better than Da'Rel Scott of Maryland, as or right now a little but not much, and one could argue Scott might be faster.

As for Thomas Jones, forget that, enough Virginia stuff, Jones is by far a more physical runner than Wilson, Wilson is fast and is improving, but Jones could do it all and was a top 10 pick, Wilson will never be a top 10 pick!

I was young when Jones was at UVA, but from the clips of the draft that I seen Wilson reminds me so much of him from that time. Hit it and go.

He lacks patience, to the point where if he runs inside you know he is going to run into one of his blockers. He seems like he has bulked up and is now harder to tackle, but has also lost some speed, the 120 yard/game average is deceptive, seeing that I never feel as if he is anywhere close to those numbers.

FUNBUNCHER

How is 120yds/game deceptive??

Those aren't like tackle numbers. You watch Va Tech play and see David Wilson picking up yardage.

Wilson is a good RB IMO and will be solid/good pro.

The speed is still there. He's playing a little dinged up and isn't used to all the carries, as evidenced when he has his hands on his knees towards the end of games in the huddle.

He's the same size. He's just tremendously strong.

IMO he needs to stay in order to prove a few things. Namely improvements concerning ball security (three fumbles on the year), vision (still sub-par), and endurance (should not be looking so worn towards the end of games).

Physically he's incredibly gifted though and he's putting up numbers.

Wilson is a stud. Much bigger in person than he looks. Lost speed? Don't believe it. He does need to learn a bit more patience but it's coming with reps, as is the vision that he supposedly lacks.

UVa wishes they had a talent like him.

Does Wilson come out this year? If you think about it, he will not be able to improve his stock from this year to next year with the crop of RBs coming out.

He's probably a second rounder if he comes out after this season. Depending on his combine. VT is a young team and Wilson still has room to improve and grow in my opinion. He is a first round talent, but he as yet to have the career defining game, even though his numbers are very impressive. I haven't heard anything yet. I think he would be smart to stick around and refine his game a bit while adding a few more pounds. He could stand to be a little more well rounded and like Logan Thomas, the longer they stay in school, the higher they will likely be drafted. I can see both as first rounders in a year or two.

Then again, how many players stuck around and had an injury destroy their professional careers? I cannot blame anyone for taking a nice paycheck if it's all but assured.

With no true stud at VT to take over the reins, I'm sure they will try to get another year out of Wilson. I have a feeling both he and Thomas will bolt after next season.

If he stays in school? I have no clue. I'm not claiming he will be the first running back off the board, even with a great season in '12-'13, but that all depends on so many factors. With his talent, he's certainly capable of being a first round selection. Still, being that he is a running back...I have long since learned not to try my hand at prognosticating. Or at least not when anyone is looking. ;)

David Wilson is a lot better than I originally had him as, having an absolute beast of a year. And oddly enough, might be smart to go out now. Especially if the likes of Lamar Miller is not going out, then could totally argue he is the 2nd best back in the draft potentially. But 2013 he would have to go up against Lattimore and Dyer potentially and possibly a healthy back to normal Knile Davis.

2012 NFL Draft RB prospects potentially:
Trent Richardson Alabama JR
Lamar Miller Miami FL RS SOPH
David Wilson Virginia Tech JR
LaMichael James Oregon JR
Doug Martin Boise State
Brandon Bolden Ole Miss
Rex Burkhead Nebraska JR
Cyrus Gray Texas A&M
Vick Ballard Miss State

2013 NFL Draft RB prospects potentially:
Marcus Lattimore South Carolina JR
Michael Dyer Auburn JR
Lamar Miller Miami FL JR
David Wilson Virginia Tech SR
Knile Davis Arkansas SR

Rex Burkhead Nebraska SR
Christine Michael Texas A&M SR
Ray Graham Pitt SR

I don't think any top RB prospects stay for their senior year anymore.
All the top 2011 juniors IMO are gone, and with the new salary cap every rookie is playing for their second contract so why not get into the pros early???

Wilson looked as advertised last night. I'm weary of Virginia Tech runningbacks in general, but Wilson looks pretty legitimate. I'm not sure he's a "special" runner at the NFL level, but he's easily a guy I can see going in the second round and making significant contributions.
