So apparently Mark Ingram is 3rd on the depth chart for this upcoming game against the 49ers. I wonder why that is. I heard he was doing well in camp. And Chris Ivory is coming off an injury/surgery if I'm not mistaken.

I know these mean absolutely nothing. But, still, here they are for discussion:

ESPN Preseason power rankings
RK (LW) TEAM REC COMMENT

1 (9) Packers 10-6 While other teams stockpiled free agents, the Packers stood pat. Are the defending champs still preseason favorites? (Walker)

2 (1) Patriots 14-2 Too bad "Hard Knocks" couldn't film the daily Albert Haynesworth-Chad Ochocinco show. (Clayton)

3 (7) Eagles 10-6 Only one thing will make this season a success -- winning the franchise's first Vince Lombardi Trophy. (Fox)

4 (5) Saints 11-5 Saints will find out whether Reggie Bush was an underrated contributor after all. (Sando)

5 (3) Steelers 12-4 With off-field distractions behind them, the reigning AFC champs are focused on getting back to the Super Bowl. (Walker)

6 (2) Falcons 13-3 Adding Ray Edwards quiets draft-day criticisms about ignoring pass rush. (Sando)

7 (8) Jets 11-5 So far, they have replaced Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith with only Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason. (Clayton)

8 (10) Colts 10-6 Provided Peyton Manning is healthy, don't write off the Colts. They have healed up and even added outsiders. (Kuharsky)

9 (4) Ravens 12-4 The Ravens can go as far as fourth-year QB Joe Flacco is willing to take them. (Walker)

10 (14) Chargers 9-7 Every year looks promising, then they wind up short of expectations. It's time for Philip Rivers to be grouped with the elite. (Kuharsky)

11 (12) Giants 10-6 Missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year is not an option for Tom Coughlin. (Fox)

12 (13) Buccaneers 10-6 It starts with the quarterback, and Tampa Bay has a good one in Josh Freeman. (Sando)

13 (6) Bears 11-5 The loss of longtime center Olin Kreutz will hurt Chicago's running game. (Walker)

14 (11) Chiefs 10-6 Big breakthroughs are often followed by a step back. Can the Chiefs buck that trend? (Kuharsky)

15 (17) Rams 7-9 Sam Bradford, Josh McDaniels a compelling combination for the Rams. (Sando)

16 (18) Cowboys 6-10 It will be interesting to see Rob Ryan's effect on the Cowboys' defense. (Fox)

17 (21) Texans 6-10 Always a darling preseason pick. Could it be the year? Sure. Could it be another failure with people getting fired? Sure. (Kuharsky)

18 (24) Lions 6-10 The Lions have "sleeper" written all over them, but only if quarterback Matthew Stafford stays healthy. (Walker)

19 (19) Seahawks 7-9 Sidney Rice, Zach Miller give Seattle needed weapons in passing game. (Sando)

20 (20) Titans 6-10 Don't buy that they will be contenders for Andrew Luck. Mike Munchak will squeeze something out of the Titans. (Kuharsky)

21 (28) Cardinals 5-11 Kevin Kolb's arrival restores hope at quarterback, but time will tell whether Kolb's the answer. (Sando)

22 (16) Jaguars 8-8 Defense will be better for sure. The question is whether David Garrard can play with consistency. (Kuharsky)

23 (15) Raiders 8-8 The Raiders are on the rise if Jason Campbell can play consistently. You have to like Hue Jackson's energy. (Kuharsky)

24 (22) Dolphins 7-9 If the Dolphins can't get Brett Favre to challenge Chad Henne, maybe they can ask Dan Marino. (Clayton)

25 (23) Vikings 6-10 Minnesota actually got younger at quarterback by acquiring 34-year-old Donovan McNabb. (Walker)

26 (25) 49ers 6-10 Widespread changes on defense raise questions about 49ers' short-term prospects. (Sando)

27 (29) Broncos 4-12 I fear the first year of the John Fox regime will be a long, ugly one filled with Tim Tebow-related controversy. (Kuharsky)

28 (27) Browns 5-11 If QB Colt McCoy isn't the answer, it will be another long season in Cleveland. (Walker)

29 (26) Redskins 6-10 In a few more weeks, Mike Shanahan might wish he had kept Donovan McNabb. (Fox)

30 (32) Panthers 2-14 Carolina came out swinging in free agency, but future hinges on Cam Newton. (Sando)

31 (30) Bills 4-12 The Bills' offensive line can't afford an injury, but it would look better had it added Tyson Clabo. (Clayton)

32 (31) Bengals 4-12 The Bengals are moving on from the Carson Palmer-Chad Ochocinco era, but expect plenty of growing pains with young players. (Walker)

26 (25) 49ers 6-10 Widespread changes on defense raise questions about 49ers' short-term prospects. (Sando)

I know the rankings mean nothing. I just find the rationale hypocritical.

The 49ers aren't the only team who will have 4-5 new starters on defense. The Eagles come to mind as well. It shouldn't be a negative for one and a positive for another.

"Widespread changes" are "widespread changes." The critique should be about improving or downgrading, NOT just the changes.

Meh, i've heard one fan tooting his horn, otherwise, I haven't heard anything other than that he fumbledhis first carry, and he looked "strong and decisive" while not really doing anything spectacular.

As universally loved and revered as he, he'd already be dubbed Walter Payton if he did anything noteworthy in camp, lol.

Thomas supposedly isn't 100%, and Ivory is also coming from an injury, so expect to see him carry plenty, I can't wait to get a look at him :).

Channing Crowder retires

Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder announced that he plans to retire.

Crowder made the announcement on WQAM radio in Miami.

Crowder, a six-year starter for Miami, was released following the team's first practice of training camp. Miami signed Kevin Burnett to replace Crowder.

Crowder was cut by the Dolphins but did visit the New Orleans Saints.

Crowder spent his entire six-year career with the Dolphins after being drafted in 2005 out of Florida. He finished his career with 469 tackles but may be most remembered for his bombastic personality.

Crowder caused a stir this offseason when he intimated that he sold some of his game-worn jerseys to boosters while playing for the Gators in college. Crowder later recanted saying he was merely putting himself in the same hypothetical position that former Ohio State star Terrelle Pryor found himself in.

Crowder also had a longstanding war of words with Rex Ryan, head coach of the division rival New York Jets, that featured Crowder referring to the Jets as "fake people" and "posers."

Last season, Crowder also accused Baltimore Ravens fullback Le'Ron McClain of spitting on him during a game, an accusation that never led to discipline from the league.

ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton and The Associated Press contributed to this report

Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin are actually on the 2nd team right now, but they are as valuable as starters so I don't know if they'll play any longer than the 1st team guys. At WR, Jason Avant and Riley Cooper are the starters with DeSean Jackson being a no-go (along with Jeremy Maclin and Steve Smith obviously).

Edit: Forgot that Mike Patterson won't be playing, so Cullen Jenkins should get the start.

I'm assuming Ryan Mallett will play like the #1 overall pick he should have been tonight, then BB trades him to Washington in the morning for their entire 2012 draft and Shanahan destroys Mallett. Then the Pats trade the rights to Andrew Luck next year to Cleveland for their entire draft and Joe Haden. Then they would have three full draft classes next year, plus an extra first and second, quite possibly the sexiest pair of young starting CBs in the league and they don't need to worry about cutting Brian Hoyer. That's all probable...right???

Which is true also, however if we have no lag time transitioning from Brady to another franchise Qb I'd rather take that over a second rounder and a DB. Brady won't be worth that much when he's 37. Honestly, Mallet is going to use the preseason as a try out to show his potential and if there are positive reports of his character, some team desperate for a QB will trade for him in a year or 2.

No one would give up 2 1st round picks for Tom Brady at the age of 37. That's mortgaging you're future for a guy who can play 2 years at best. He might be on the decline at that age.

Lets wait and see what he actaully does against a 1st String Defense before we Crown him anything.

Yeah, pre-season people haha. Mallet has looked real good, but this is sloppy short offseason first pre-season game football.

Newton had character concerns to but that didn't stop Carolina from taking him number one overall.

Mallet always had first round talent. His question marks were pocket presence and character. If he improves and answers those question marks with flying colors, he'll be a nice addition to a QB needy team.

Yes because doing well against 3rd, and 4th Stringers makes everybody regret passing on him.
That and the fact that he is just ******* good and vastly superior to what those teams have at the QB position.
