The assistant principal of a Parsippany-Troy Hills school who was accused of burglarizing a woman's apartment and then roaming the neighborhood in her clothes will not be returning to school on Monday.
Matthew Sterling, 31, of Easton, Pa., was suspended with pay from his post at Central Middle School pending the resolution of the multiple charges filed against him, board of education President Robert Perlett said today.
Sterling "won't be in school" tomorrow, Perlett said, adding that he was disheartened by the allegations against the staffer who took the job at the 750-student school last July after serving six years in Phillipsburg.
Sterling was confronted by police on a local street last Sunday about 2 a.m. wearing two coats, a shoe and leather pants belonging to a 37-year-old Easton woman who reported them missing after coming home three hours later to find her apartment ransacked and burglarized.
While taking her clothes, Sterling left behind his sport coat, boxer shorts, shoes, keys, a credit card, his wallet and drivers license, according to a police affidavit. He is free on $5,000 bail.
