View Full Version : Is there a player who has score every kind of offensive touchdown?

Anyone playing right now? Only person I could find who had, in their career, scored rushing, receiving, kick return, punt return and passing touchdowns is Gale Sayers. It just seemed to me like that'd be a cool thing to do, if you were to accomplish that feat. I'm just thinking of the sort of newly invented "position" guys like Brad Smith play, and notice that although he doesn't have that many snaps, or yards, he's scored touchdowns by every way except a punt return, which he simply doesn't do. Kind of makes me think about his value to his team. Almost like a kicker, in a way. A player who doesn't play defense, and has the offensive plays he participates in tailored to him, is pretty much a "specialist." So just thinking about how that affects where a GM would think of taking a guy like that in the draft. But yeah, obviously Gale Sayers is on a much higher plane than Brad Smith, I'm thinking guys like Josh Cribbs, Darren Sproles, and the like.

V.I.P, you should stop letting this guy use the internet in your dorm room.

If he did that i'd be ****** bro.... No but seriously i think Darren Sproles scored every kind of TD.

I changed my selection to Darren Sproles.

I changed my selection to Darren Sproles.

And you keep me in stitches. Good work. I've already looked up all those guys. It takes like 20 seconds.

The reason for the thread is that these guys are unlikely to make any leaderboards and are therefore sometimes hard to find. You have to think of a guy first, then look it up. Only one I thought of that had all 5 was Gale Sayers. I looked up Darren Sproles; he hasn't thrown for one. He certainly could, at some point, and I don't think it would surprise anyone in the slightest. But he hasn't yet.

I don't know about all-purpose touchdowns, but I know of one player who has recorded an offensive TD of every type--rushing, receiving, passing--all in the same game. Ladanian Tomlinson did it against the Raiders in 2005.

Yeah, I knew he did that. He never returned a single kick in his career, though, punt or kickoff. Found that out looking up candidates.

pro-football-reference.com play finder is awesome. There have been 5 players to do it in one season--Gale Sayers, Spec Sanders, Terry Metcalf, George McAfee and Elroy Hirsch.

My guess would be Troy Brown. I know he did the passing/rushing/receiving tds in one game vs. the Colts. I know he returned a punt for td too. Not sure about the KR though. Not going to look it up anyway.

The last person to have all 5 types of touchdowns is Bryan Mitchell--WAS/PHI/NYG. He recorded his touchdown pass, the last necessary stat, in 2002.

Terry Kirby is another player who has completed all 5 in his career. OJ Simpson has 4 of the 5 in his career, missing only the punt return for a TD.

Here is stat sheet with all of the players who meet the criteria. Looks like a total of 22 players have recorded at least 1 touchdown in all 5 categories over their career.

Did you know, since 1960, there have been 7 players to throw, run and catch a TD in a single game, but none of them have returned a punt or a kick for a TD in the same game.

Can you name them without looking? That was actually David Patten Oct 21, 2001. There were no punt returns for a TD that game, however.

When I first saw the thread title, the first current player to pop into my head was Cribbs. If he gets a passing TD, then he'll accomplish the feat. He's actually got multiple TD's in rushing, receiving, punt returning, and kick returning.

And after getting the start in Cleveland for the past two weeks, ya gotta figure he has a better chance for the trick play pass, similar to the one that the Chargers did with LT, sooner or later.

For some reason I had always thought that he threw a touchdown... :/

I'm surprised they haven't taken advantage of him being a quarterback in college.

I went to H.S. with Terry Kirby. Not that that is relevant to this discussion.

Mewelde Moore is just a kickoff return away from accomplishing this feat. I'm not sure if he's in position to ever do this though.

my 1st thought was Brad Smith, but he hasn't returned a punt for a TD. if he had more than 2 punt returns in his career, i'd bet he'd have done it.

I don't know if anyone has done that combo since Sayers, but another impressive one was Deion who scored TDs off fumble return(1), INT return(9), Punt return(6), kick return(3), and receiving(3). He also has 2 incomplete pass attempts and 9 carries for -14 yards lol.

He may be the only player who has recorded stats in all those areas.

I know Randle El has thrown and caught, and definitely has return touchdowns. I don't think he's ever ran for one though.

Edit: no rushing, and only one return td so he's missing one of those too.
