Have to write an essay analyzing a poem, analyzing it line by line if yall could help me out i will love you forever, heres the poem.

DULCE ET DECORUM EST1

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares2 we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest3 began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots4
Of tired, outstripped5 Five-Nines6 that dropped behind.

Gas!7 Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets8 just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime9 . . .
Dim, through the misty panes10 and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,11 choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud12
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest13
To children ardent14 for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.15

DUDE, me too! Mine is due tomorrow. I was thinking about doing song lyrics, though. It's much easier to write on how the beat changes with the mood of the song and the way the artist expresses their feelings through the tone of their voice.

What really helps me with poems is to google them first. Tons of people have already analyzed the poem and it kind of gives you things to look for. That way, you have a better sense of what the poem is saying and you can interpret it as you read along for a 2nd time.

Alright, this is a research paper studying refugees that are displaced from their homes by war, famine, or natural disasters and how they rebuild their lives elsewhere. The refugees that my main focus is on is in Africa, particularly people that are displaced due to violence e.g. blood diamonds (sierra leone), ethnic cleansing type **** (rwanda).

HELP!

Here's a brief little outline of how its lookin' so far.

Thesis: This is how people who leave the most war-torn, battered areas of the world rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

1st topic: The first thing that i'll talk about is the background of the refugees (what they did prior to being displaced,
what they were doing as they were displaced, and the main causes of displacement)
A: The peoples occupations, religious beliefs, why they were driven out

2nd topic: External and Internal displacement
A: were the people were driven out because of foreigners or domestic violence

3rd topic: Will focus about the horrible conditions that typically await refugees in settlement areas
A: many refugee camps are disease-rampant

4th topic: Obstacles facing the refugees about returning home.
A: IS it safe for many of these people to return home?

5th topic: The response of national and international entities that either help or don't help these refugees
A: Charity response, govt responses

Conclusion: How these refugees return to their homes and how they are doing now

Discuss the nature and purpose of derivative products. In your answer consider the different types of derivative products, the risks managed by these products and the differences between exchange-traded contracts and over-the-counter contracts.

Alright guys. I suck at science, plus I'm working on some other stuff for this class right now, so I was hoping one of you science wizzes could help me out here. I'll give loads of rep.....

Design an experiment using the scientific method. You may use a problem encountered in your everyday lives or base your experiment on the sample provided below. Include in your report the following: Identify a problem, state the hypothesis and null hypothesis, indicate the experimental and control groups including the variables tested, provide results (may make up numbers if necessary), analyze the results and draw some conclusions.

Sample: Tumor cells are cells that are able to divide and provide new cells at uncontrolled rates. Therefore, in a short amount of time, a single mutated tumor cell can generate many other tumor cells. These cells can eventually take over the human body, resulting in death. But, for these tumor cells to survive they need nutrition and oxygen just like normal cells. Tumor cells are interesting in that they can release a substance, a protein, that will cause blood vessels to grow towards the ball of tumor cells! This process by which blood vessels grow is called angiogenesis. Blood vessels are required because they are the route by which cells will receive nutrition and oxygen. Therefore, if there were a chemical that could interrupt the growth of the blood vessels towards the ball of tumor cells then it is conceivable that the growth of the tumor could be slowed or halted all together. A protein, called endostatin, has been isolated and you want to determine its effect on the growth of blood vessels. An interesting bit of information you discovered while doing your library research is that tumor cells can be grown outside of the body in a culture dish. To you, this seems a perfect method to test endostatin and its affects on tumor cells. By having the tumor cells and blood vessels isolated in a culture dish you can easily control the environmental conditions. Based on this information, design an experiment to test whether endostatin affects blood vessel growth with tumor cells.

Can't really concentrate right now, so thoughts on this one

"AIDS drugs can extend a life span. Their high cost puts them out of reach of most developing countries, which urgently need them. Should the United States goverment offer incentives to American drug companies to sell AIDS drugs to developing countries at a discount? What about AIDS patients at home? Who actually ends up paying? "

CJSchneider

The American tax-payer. These pharmaceutical companies would just raise the price on non-AIDS related medications to compensate for what they didn't make in the AIDS related sales.

Do I have to worry about the the other $3100 at all? Do I have to make a another journal entry for it?

Not to mention, as horrible as this sounds, but the AIDS actually is helping to control the overpopulation in Africa which in a sick way is helping the environment. Also, can certainly be argued that by extending their lives, you also extend their opportunity to breed and worsen the epidemic. Horrible situation where really no one wins though.

A company makes a partial payment of $100 on a $3200 account.

Spot on assuming that the original treatment of the $3,200 was correct. So assuming it is a company paying you(which isn't how I read the original statement) either way, flip it to accs payable if it isnt...

Originally when the sale was made(account created) should have had the following -

DR Accounts Receivable - 3200
CR Sales - 3200

Then there is the additional journal now to acknowledge the receipt of cash.

DR Cash at Bank - 100
CR Accounts Receivable - 100

If you have to bring in the original amount then just merge the two journals.

Also, I post that assuming there are no discount conditions on their payment, if so adding the discount makes things a bit more fun.

Let me know if you need any more clarification.

I need some help with the economics problems, I don't know why engineers have to take this class its a waste.

John deposits $1000 in a saving account that which pays 12% per year compounded monthly. 2 years later, he deposits $2000 but now the interest rate pays 15% compounded quarterly. 1 year later, he decides to buy a car and he retires half of the amount that is in the savings account, and place the rest into an account that pays interest at a rate of 12% compounded continuously for a period of 5 years. How much would be in the account at the end of the investment period?

If you can do this in excel it would help, I'll send you how much i have done so you can help me check it.

ill give it a try.

1000$ * (1+ 0.12/12)^24 is for the first 2 years.

After that you add 2000 and it should be

(1000$ * (1+ 0.12/12)^24 + 2000$) * (1 + 0.15/4)^4

after that u take half of it so

((1000$ * (1+ 0.12/12)^24 + 2000$) * (1 + 0.15/4)^4)/2 * e^(5*0.12)

I hope thats correct. Im not sure though since i only know the german terms

Many Chemicals Unlimited purchases a computer-controlled filter for $100,000. Half of the purchase price is borrowed from a bank at 15% compounded annually, and the rest will be financed with owns company money (still need to be included in the cash flow). The loan is to be paid back with 5 equal annual payments over a 5-year period. The filter is expected to last 10 years, at which time it will have a salvage value of $10,000. Over the 10-year period operating and maintenance costs are anticipated to equal $20,000 year; however, by making the investment, annual fines of $50,000 for pollution will be avoided. The firm expects to earn 12% on its investments. Determine each of the following measures of investment worth and state whether or not the filter purchase was economically sound.

That isn't even simple algebra, that is just plug the numbers you are given into the standard compound interest formula, doesn't even have to solve anything.

I used to be able to do the last economics and still could with the formulas, but really, how hard is it for you to grab the formula's and put in the numbers, that question is one of the first things you will see in introduction to finance and even has all the required information. Both IRR and ERR are a formula, Net Present Value and its related equations will give you the rest.

did you even TRY? the yahoo finance website has a spot where you just TYPE IN THE COMPANY NAME and it tells you the ticker symbol and whether it's on NYSE or not. it's not a remotely difficult thing to figure out.

realistically, it's akin to asking for help with a take home spelling test.

Well to be honest I did looked for the NYSE website and it sucked and then I really don't want to look just for 5 companies I know are good, I wanted to check some with cheap stocks but looked to be on the rise, and make some sort of risk, of course I couldn't find any list but now I've found it and realistically it was looking for Stock Symbols, lol.

Alright I need help with a formula for excel. What I'm trying to do is compute the common size income statement. To do this I have to divide each item on the statement by a single item on the statement (sales revenue). I could do them all one by one, but I need to know how to write the formula where I can just drag it down the entire C column. Here is a screenshot:

http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/7374/acct.jpg

So basically what I need to do is divide all the numbers in the B column by the B11 cell and put that percentage in the C column. The 100% is the first one which I did without a formula. I'm sure there's a formula for this, hopefully one of you will know it

Thanks for any help.

Most courses make you buy one of those "blue-book" essay documents for finals. 1-2 pages should be decent unless it really is an in depth topic. I always used the "write until you think you adequately answered the question" rule of thumb. Don't write to little, but don't make an extra page from fluff and BS.

How about the ability of coaches to leave schools with no repercussions, but a student-athlete must stay out at least a year. Possible solutions, a student athlete with a new coach can transfer with sit out rule or something done to the coach at a new school.

I think it would be easier to argue against that. Because they are a student first and they shouldn't choose because of a coach but rather because of the school. Most student athletes don't turn professional.

Given that you aren't allowed to use a calculator, my assumption would be the following:

a.) 7i^69+5i^94-3=7i+5(-1)-3=7i-8
b.)(7+3i^7)(4i-6i^2)=(7+3i)(4i-6(-1))=(7+3i)(4i+6)=28i+42+12i^2+18i=28i+42+12(-1)+18i=46i+30

Essentially these problems just test to see if you understand the concept that i raised to an even number becomes -1, i raised to an odd number is i, and i raised to 0 is 1.

Can someone help me convert the equation y=17.816e^0.1539x from y=ae^lnx to y=ab^x?

I can't be bothered to write out the solution, but the key to this is going to be that ln(x) is the inverse of e^x and so e^ln(x) is just x and similarly ln(e^x) is just x as well.

I recently read Daniel Vickers Two Centuries of Work in Essex County, Massachusetts, hoping he could give me some insight into the evolution of the market economy in the early colonies. My contention was that prior to the Revolutionary War the economic modalities especially of the southern colonies could most aptly be characterized as a agrarian pre-revolutionary utopia with the capital-forming effects of military mobilization based on my reading of Wood. But I now tend to feel Wood drastically underestimates the impact of social distinction as predicated upon wealth, especially inherited wealth.

Well their are really only two logical options here:

1) The partisan press slandered Alexander Hamilton in which case he was construed worse than he was, and people believed it. E.G Fox news talking about the democratic party to the tea party.

2) The partisan press slandered Aaron Burr in which case they tried to make him appear worse than he really was yet it back fired, because no one believes it. Eg. Fox News talking about the democratic party to undecideds.

50% chance at getting it right.

I'm not really 100% on this but I hope to lead you in the right direction.

Newspapers were the main source of getting news at that time period. I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who used the papers against Hamilton. People bought it and therefore Hamilton was defeated. Hamilton tried using the same tactics against Aaron Burr (vice-president of Jefferson) but it backfired. Burr called him out on it and challenged him to a duel. Burr ended up wounding Hamilton in the duel, which eventually killed him.

My memory is not perfect, I could embarrass myself here. But if it's any help I'm glad I could provide it. Source: Took a lot of history

well that and that they have enough artillery staged near the border to utterly annihilate south korea, plus enough people in their army to clean up any stragglers. they might be a 3rd world country, but they back themselves up with some teeth.

Guys...I desperately need help working my TI-83 calculator. I need to make a graph that has two variables on it...how would I go about doing that? +rep and such

aren't all the ti-83 graphs basically y=$x in the normal mode? i think there's another mode where you can place x and y on the same side (i.e. x^2+y^2=z), but it's been like, 15 years since i last did any programming on one of those.

Guys...I desperately need help working my TI-83 calculator. I need to make a graph that has two variables on it...how would I go about doing that? +rep and such

2-independent variables?

Or just two variables? Because y=x is two variables (1 dependent and 1 independent). If this is what you are looking for there is a blue button with white lettering that says Y=. Hit that. Type in what you need then hit the blue graph button. (sorry if this is obviously wrong)

The TI-89 (I own one) was the first TI calculator to provide 3D (2 independent variables, 1 dependent ie z = f(x,y)) graphing. It's very very different from an TI83.

You might be able to use "Parametric" mode (don't know if it has one - honestly, I haven't used one in ~10 years), but your equations have to be parameterized.

It's this:

Find exact coordinates of the centroid of the region bounded by the given curves.
y = 3sin(x)
y = 3cos(x)
x = 0, x = π/4

edit: we're studying moments Mx and My, as well as center of mass of systems.

yeah, rusty.

do you have any of the basic parts done? i'm coming up with really hideous values along the lines of

n = (8 tan^(-1)(1-sqrt(2)))/(8 pi-1)

which doesn't 'feel' right (or seem logical). it gives a general value of -0.13.

edited to add: are you guys doing multiple integration? that should make it easier, but i really can't remember that well enough.

Guys...I desperately need help working my TI-83 calculator. I need to make a graph that has two variables on it...how would I go about doing that? +rep and such

Like descendency asked, 2 independent variables (x, y, z) or just 2 variables (x, y)? Makes a huge difference. Pretty sure you can't do it with 3 total variables on the TI-83, but I'm sure a few people could walk you through it with 2.

Works VERY differently over here. If you don't have the degree that are prerequisites then you aren't even getting a call. You aren't working in any job that is really worth it without a degree. The only exception being teaching at universities, which whilst technically is teaching, actually only requires the degree you are teaching in...

But yeah, you aren't working as a geologist, engineer, accountant, in finance, medical, teaching, veterinary or anything of the likes without the degree in that subject. You don't need a degree if you want to work in fast food, labouring or driving a truck but if you want any of the really good paying jobs then you need a degree.

Would love it cleared up whether they just throw it out and don't even call or if they just assume it will be good and call... either way, can't see say an accounting firm hiring someone with a humanities degree or even an engineering degree for that matter.

Now whether the degree should matter is another issue, I know I basically had forgotten everything I learned when I started and I honestly think that my degree requiring job could be done by a well trained monkey if one was so inclined but I know I don't get it without the degree for sure.

You can see the stars better at night? ****

This is a very easy subject to write about, but I have taken like 7 history classes sooo, anyway.

Some pros in living in Ancient Egypt is definitely the Nile river and the fertile land around it. Also a huge pro is there is basically no threat of an invasion. No would could survive walking a month of a dessert to attack someone. This and the Nile are two huge reasons why they survived for so long. They also had a lot of gold which they basically used to decorate their Pharaohs.

Cons would be the weather. Of course it's the dessert, never ******* rains. Also a con would be really strict rituals.

Mesopotamia pros are the two rivers, Tigris and Euphrates. They served as transportation, food, and an easy trade route. Pros would also be a very innovative environment that have made **** we still use today. Pros are also that you could be the world's first literate person and first one with a religion. A big pro would be that you would be living in a very advanced place at that time, first government, good technology.

Cons would be that if you're a woman, you're useless in society besides from cleaning and cooking. Also a con would be that you were not going to get educated, unless you're really rich.

If i weren't lazy, I would type it for you. If you need anything just PM me. I could add a whole bunch more for you.

So...what would be a good topic for a Business Ethics paper? I'm completely stumped.

umphrey
11-01-2010, 06:36 PM
My first thought would be about the NFL lockout. My primary focus would be the ethics of
-the owners asking for more money while refusing to make their financial data public (make sure to bring up the Packers as the only publicly owned team with open books)
-the owners pushing for a 18 game season with the recent concussion information coming to light
-the owners canceling health care after this season (not sure all the details on this)
-the NFL's recent outrageous fines for helmet to helmet hits but their extremely selective and limited support of former players

This is a slam dunk topic for a business ethics paper to me. If you're interested, I'll give you a sample thesis statement.

Another thought is Lebron James leaving Cleveland. There I would focus on
-the ethics of his "decision" (the event) where he made money at the expense of his home town fans
-how he devastated the economy there
-how he left without telling his team, and the backlash from his former GM (be sure to quote him)
-the ethics of the big 3 conspiring to play on the same team
-make sure to bring up the money he is saving on taxes in Florida

This is another great topic primarily because he screwed his home town that raised him and made a ton of money doing it...makes it a very emotional topic. Depending on your teacher you can put in a pic of a burning Cleveland Lebron jersey for extra affect.

I need help on this Chi-Squared test... How do I compute x2 without expected values? Any help?

"A local car dealer is attempting to determine which gifts would draw the most visitors in its showroom. Any individual who visits the showroom and takes a test drive is given the gift with no obligations. The dealer chose four gifts and offered each for one week. The results are as follows:

Week............... Gift.......................... Total Given Out
1....... Four-foot metal stepladder........ 425
2....... $50 savings bond...................... 610
3........ Dinner for four at Ruth Chris...... 510
4........ Six pink flamingos..................... 705

Using a chi-square test, what conclusions can you draw regarding the premiums? Please write out all steps:

H0 and HA, Calculation of Test Statistic, Find Table Value, Compare. Should we reject H0? What does that mean?"

MidwayMonster31
12-06-2010, 11:29 PM
There has to be an expected value for all four of those things, since the formula is (observed-expected)^2 / expected. Rejecting H0 is just finding a table value much higher or lower than the expected value. The exact values should be in the book, and it should give a maximum and minimum for the null hypothesis (H0) to stand. If whatever you find is higher or lower than the max and min, then reject H0.

My thought is the book intends for you to assume that all four gifts are equally as desirable, so the expected value for each gift would be 562.5. This comes about simply because in total 2,250 customers came in and the odds of choosing any one of the gifts would 1/4. So the expected value of customers who would choose each gift would be 2,250 * 1/4.

Yeah, that's probably what it is supposed to be, it's just weird because they don't really get to choose the gift because the trials were run over the course of four weeks, so people wouldn't really know all the options.

Be careful on that, the stuff I have read has made it look awfully clear that the NFLPA made that up and that several league sources have said that absolutely wont happen as it would be against the law, if not for other reasons.

Yeah, that's probably what it is supposed to be, it's just weird because they don't really get to choose the gift because the trials were run over the course of four weeks, so people wouldn't really know all the options.

Sorry.

(y^2-4)/(y+3) = (2) - (y-2)/(y+3)

alrighty, first multiply both sides of the eqn by (y+3) to simplify. gives you-
(y^2 - 4) = 2(y + 3) - (y - 2)
simplify RS-
(y^2 - 4) = 2y + 6 - (y - 2)
(y^2 - 4) = y + 8
bring over to LS to factor
y^2 - y - 12 = 0
factor
(y+3)(y-4)=0
y= -3 or 4, but since -3 is a restriction, y=4.

I took random electives, like intro to bioengineering, photovolotic systems, advance thermo, HVAC(super easy class and very to the point of look up in table, find right equations combine). Still not sure what I want to do, might end up going for MBA in project management.

My instructor told us to use the atan2 function but it's asking for a Y and X and some examples show inserting a range as well.
That's just too much for me to comprehend.... any help?

You would be better off going to matlab or physics or engineering forum. Though sometimes they are rudy cool, and won't help unless you show them you did something or if it is hw this only drop hints. other times you get people that will help.

Thanks fellas.

Broth, that link just went over my head. Cross and dot products of several vectors getting arctan'd ... I get all that buy my example is a simple equation.
It's not a vector or anything. I think that's why I'm so confused.
I can't find any examples that pertain to my situation.

All is well though. A friend of mine let me know how to make it work.
Not sure if it's the right way to do it but it's the only way I got it to work.

Thanks again.

After you guys talking about bioengineering and all, anything normal seems useless to post in this.

Maybe I can help you. I'm mostly into macroeconomics and finance, but I do have some knowledge of microeconomics as well.

Jebus! I haven't seen anything like this for 4 years now. I'll have to check my notes or something, but I'll get back to you.
