OK guys I apparently have some spyware virus or malware or something on my PC. It won't allow me to use my C:/Temp folder or open downloaded documents from the internet.
So I took the AVG antivirus from my other PC and tried to run the setup...which conveniently failed.
Any suggestions?

Well I don't know any other way than to use the Antivirus, find the bug, and go remove in safe mode. If the virus prevents you from installing the software.......

to go into safe mode, click Start, then Run, then type in 'msconfig'.. then click the BOOT.INI tab, then check the "/SAFEBOOT" box under "Boot Options".. Hit okay.. To get out of safemode when you're through, just do the same thing.. uncheck the box though..

My advice would first to try to use an online virus scanner and see it that will solve the problem.

www.bitdefender.com
www.pandasoftware.com
www.kaspersky.com/
http://www.f-secure.com/

I've had success with all of those, though usually I have to run more then one of them to get all the viruses off. If they don't work or are unable to run, SuperAntiSpyware got rid of a lot of trojans and whatnot for me, as long as it will let you install it.

http://www.superantispyware.com/

if nothing else, I would post on http://www.majorgeeks.com and make a post on their forum in the malware section after following their sticky topics.

I got safe mode to work. Now I have to figure out how to remove the stuff when in safe mode.
Anyone?

Get AVG onto your computer and run it while the computer is in Safe Mode..

Apples can get viruses so get that **** outta here.
They run off of linux code so don't think you are invincible.

Download it when in regular mode.. but go into Safe Mode for the Set Up. I think that should work.

The setup file doesn't show up in my documents when in safe mode.

Huh? That's not even remotely true. They also are very rarely infected by viruses because virus makers tend to target PCs because they are much more common.

It IS remotely true, and it's pretty obvious virus makers don't want to screw the minority.

Where do you come up with this stuff? Apples run OS X, not Linux or anything related to Linux.

Mac OS X is based solely off of UNIX. Which linux runs.

Quit trying.

Phrost has no idea what he's talking about. Yes, OS X is related to Unix. Just as much as humans and pigs are related. At one time they shared a common ancestor, but there's nothing in common left.

actually... anatomically, pigs are the closest non-primate animals to humans... so not the best comparison. ha.

How are you arguing about the similarities between Mac OS X and UNIX when you can't even figure out how to get rid of a virus on your computer? As Ward stated, there are virtually no similarities between the two operating systems nowadays.
