Decided to make an official Skyrim thread since people will be getting it on different systems.

I'm rolling with the PC version myself, obviously.

Hate the console-ported user interface for PC (simple mod should fix it), but everything else is amazing. DA2 did the same thing with its interface, and it's becoming more and more common. Makes sense because it's a lot harder to port a UI from PC to console than the other way around...it's still lazy and clunky.

What did everyone create for their first character?

I'm going straight RP for the setting and rolled a Nord. Mostly have used two-handed weapons so far, so I imagine I'll start down that path, but am not certain. I took the first Smithing perk, but have not invested beyond that (level 5).

Unfortunately, my gaming was interrupted by electricians and a planned date tonight. Will continue my quest tomorrow!

I'm going to give it a a little time and then get it for PC. I'm a huuuuge huuuuuge Morrowind fan but unmodded Oblivion made me want to cry.

I'll see what the flaws of the game turn out to be and let the modding community fix them up. Plus, I might be able to a used copy for cheap if I want a bit.

I made an Argonian just like I did in Morrowind and Oblivion. The dragon fights are ridiculously epic.

Played for about 5 hours straight when I got home from work today and have loved every minute of it. Amazing game.

Edit: As for my character, I made a Nord with a steady rotation of a 1-handed sword, shield, destruction/restoration spells and a bow. For my first character (the one I spend the most time on) I like to make a jack-of-all-trades type guy, then later I'll probably make a stealthy dude (still have no idea which race I'll pick here, I'm leaning argonian because they look bad ass) and maybe even a pure mage and pure warrior in the future. I can see this game keeping me occupied for quite a while.

How To Become A Werewolf

Complete a quest for the Jarl of Dragonreach in Whiterun to begin your journey to lycanthropy. From there, drop by the Companions faction. They’ll give you a series of quests to complete.

Finish every quest they give you until you complete the chain, and the Companions will send you on one final job. To gather some items before meeting them in the Underforge.

In the Underforge, you’ll enter into the ritual to become a werewolf. Now, you’ll need to figure out where to find a cure…

The benefits of becoming a Werewolf are; your health and stamina increase by 100, your sprinting speed becomes faster than a horse’s gallop.

You gain a new shout that instills fear in enemies and summons wolves, while also gaining some hand-to-hand melee damage bonuses. You’re also a criminal, and will be hunted by guards while in werewolf form.

There are drawbacks; you can’t use spells, equip items, or loot corpses in wolf-form. You also won’t be able to talk to NPCs.

Your werewolf form will also scare away NPCs, or turn them hostile towards you. If you’re caught transforming into a werewolf, it’s counted as a major crime.

Beware, you’re also weak against silver!

Transforming into a werewolf is temporary, so the change isn’t permanent. If you do change into a werewolf, try to do it far away from civilization.

They're right by the mammoths. They will attack you if they see you attacking a mammoth (so will other mammoths) or if you get close to things they don't want you near. Their curb stomp is far worse than the mammoth tusks. Trust me, I know! It's just a terrible idea to attack a mammoth.

I did manage to take one down, though. I got on a rock and it took about 100 arrows. Had to run around quite a bit. Worth it if for no other reason than to say I did it. Gained an entire level doing so, as well.

I've only ran into one game ending bug so far, I got stuck in a wall. But somehow I find these bugs in almost every game I play. My friend was watching me at the time and just start laughing because he knows how much I ***** about that happening to me in games.

Haven't gotten a chance to play a whole ton between thirteen and a half hour work days and football, but I'm enjoying the bits I've played so far a ton more than Oblivion or the Fallout games. Maybe it's superficial, but the new visuals really make it for me. Big worlds filled with people who don't look like total ass might be a revelation for Bethesda. The animations are a lot smoother too. I'm rocking a Nord(always played Nords in Elder Scrolls games, saw no reason to stop with the setting) and two handing.

Sticking mostly to the main quest. Just finished speaking with the Grey Beards and then doing Heath Barrow. Probably going to do some of the Companions stuff soon before anything else.

What's a "main quest"? ;) I always ended up getting lost in side quests in Oblivion and usually forgot about the main quest.

I've been playing more and I'm enjoying it a lot more. The melee still seems sloppy with lackluster customization. I also wish there were polearms/spears but oh well. The spell casting is enjoyable. The overall story is pretty interesting but the dialogue is often bland.

I love fighting the dragons. I would be content with just hunting dragons the whole time instead of playing through the main story.

I've played the game 27 hours (according to Steam - some of it is just idling while watching football) and haven't even touched the main storyline. I've really only opened up a few side quest hubs and completed the Companions quest line. And I've only been to 3 cities so far.

ImBrotherCain
11-14-2011, 07:54 AM
Yea he was... I haven't played Dark Souls but I have played its predecessor Demon Souls and combat is much more challenging. There is more involved blocking, attacking and the biggest difference is evasiveness.

In Demon Souls you have to dive and roll out of the way of a lot of attacks. To put it in a Skyrim application if you were fighting a giant when he goes to launch you in the air with his club you would roll to the side to avoid it.

It made the combat a lot more satisfying because if you failed to do avoid some attacks or block them there is a good chance you were dead and starting the level over with no equipment (Fun yet a giant pain in the ass)

That makes sense. The game is about endless content and stories. Combat is pretty fun, but secondary. There are some near dynamics with the shield and the spell-casting... I mostly just use 2h weapons in my first play through, though.

Well I haven't heard anything about main quest length but if it is your typical Bethesda game then it is about 8-15 hours.

For me it is impossible to just stick to the main quest. There is just way to much to do. There are different faction quests (Companions, College, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood etc.) bounties, dungeon raids, daedric quests, random side quests amongst many others. I believe most people find themselves wrapped up in the side missions that the game can last over 100 hours.

Not to mention when they start releasing DLC for the game there will be much more time able to be invested into the game.

That's mainly why I think I'm going to get it. If I'm going to spend 60 bucks on a game I want my money's worth. Haven't played Arkham city yet, but I hated how short the first one was even though it was awesome.

I was just curious about the main quest because normally I like to play through once pretty straight forward and then go back and do it all again trying to do everything. Or at least as much as possible.

It's still not a good reason not to make combat more than power attack or regular attack. I was expecting more improvement in that category than we got. The feedback on swings feels better, but it's still just kind of boring. Supposedly they were bringing in the guys who did the combat in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, a game known for things like this;

Your description makes it sound like their other games whilst most of the others make it sound like they've improved. I'm interested because I didn't find Oblivion to be very good, was just a big aimless mess to me with no real story or plotline, no real skill or anything like that. Does anybody else level stack? I don't level up my dude when I can. That way I can level up in combat and get a free refill on health and mana. It helps in case I run into a dragon by myself after a clearing out a dungeon. I normally only have one level above me waiting.

I also don't know any disadvantages either, besides not having the extra perk. Technically a person can probably just stay level 1 and beat down everybody with 100 of everything and no perks.

Would suck though because some quests are level dependent(hangover).

I did that by accident when I first started playing simply because I didn't know what was going on with the levelling system. I went from 1-6 when I finally figured it out. I rarely use my perks. I think I've used 6 perks and have a ton just waiting to be used.

As for something else...I wonder if Fallout 4 will be a released on the current generation consoles. They did just build this new engine, so it probably will. But on the flip side, Fallout 4 could make for an epic launch title on the new consoles.

It's true a lot of launch titles miss...but in this day and age, I'll be surprised if one of these major franchises doesnt release a big seqeul at launch. Hi Doughie,

This was my problem for a while too and then I got my conjuring up. Throwing out a frost atronach to tank for you really distracts the cats and bears, definitely long enough to roast them.

lol, I saw that. Spoilers because its long, I think its all fake anyway.

I have yet to do a single thing in Skyrim in the proper order. I'm constantly showing up to some dude's castle that I've never seen before, only to hand over a mystical item that I'd mentally scratched off as garbage hours ago, and then sit and listen to the story be retroactively explained to me:

King: Wanderer! Thank the gods you've come! The prophecy told us that a mighty warrior would arise, worthy of wielding Fjalnir, the God-axe, and slaying the evil Demon Prince Synraith. We believe you to be that warrior. What say you, traveler? Will you accept this task?

Me: Yea, verily I shall accept thine task and vanq- wait, Synraith? Fiery dude in a floating city? Cape made out of screeching souls? Ahhh, ****. I already killed that guy.

King: You ... already slew the Demon Prince, the Knife in the Dark, the Void at the Heart of All Men, whose identity you did not learn until just now?

Me: Yup. I saw that castle floating up in the sky, and I wanted to know if I could jump up the rocks to get in the back way. It took a lot of reloads, but I finally managed to hop on up in there.

King: You "hopped on up" into the Abyssal Palace?

Me: Yeeeep, yep yep yep. Just squat-jumped on in there and looted the place. Then I killed that Sydney guy-

King: Synraith, Demon Prince of the Abyss.

Me: -yeah him. I ganked that guy. Mostly just to see if I could. Plus he looked like kind of a dick.

King: Indeed, the Foulest of the Foul was "kind of a dick." But you vanquished him without the aid of sacred Fjalnir, the God-axe?

Me: Totally. It wasn't even a thing. I just hid on top of a bookshelf where he couldn't reach me and shot him with arrows. Then I waited until he forgot I was shooting him, and did it all again to get the sneak damage bonus. Took a while, but he died all the same.

King: Forsooth! Thine heroic deeds are ... well, that sounds kind of ****** up, actually. Never thought I'd feel bad for He Who Devours. So you have no need of our sacred totem weapon?

Me: What, the gold dealy, with the shiny bits? Nah, I already stole that out of the display case four hours ago, before I knew who you were. I gave it to Sven, but he Quantum Leaped out of the game with that ****.

King: Huh. So. I guess ... the bards will ... sing of your tale now?

Me: Oh yeah? Sweet, let's hear it.

Bard: The hero came with eyes aflame / his tasks already done / the land was rescued all the same / but 'tis kind of a ****** song.

Me: Word.

11-19-2011, 01:44 PM
You guys are fighting wrong then. Its true that people can just shout for 75+ damage and then shoot 2-4 fireballs at enemies and murder everybody without even swinging a sword, but you can mix it up too. Run around town, see how many random people get killed by the dragon. Maybe try hiding behind one of the invincible children. Drag a few giants or some guards into the fight and then just sit on a bench and watch the dragon fight everybody else.

The combat is 20x better than oblivion. I love the critical and finishing moves. Dragons are scaled to level so they are always ridiculously easy. 4-5 fireballs or ice storms and a couple shouts normally kill them. Maybe a few swings of a sword to finish, but its dead easy. Enchanted smithed bows kill dragons faster than Bard killed Smaug.

The end boss fight was super easy the first time I did it. It was over in about 10 seconds. 70 hours in now. Level 42. Still much to do, having a blast. Haven't even really started up the main quest, but I'm done all the guilds except for the Mage one. My favorite quests are probably the Daedric ones, those always end up being a lot of phone. One quest in particular stands out to me right now, still finishing it up, don't want to say too much so I don't ruin it.

Yeah, I maxed out smithing a long time ago. I didn't like the appearance of the Daedric or Dragonplate stuff though, so I learned the Smith buff for enchanting and made a set of armor just for it and upgraded the Ebony stuff. Like the aesthetics of that one much more. Got the defense value to be a good 30+ points ahead of what Legendary Dragonplate was too.

ImBrotherCain
11-22-2011, 10:56 PM
Yea I have been preaching about Smithing through out the thread... You can easily be level 25 with max level armor. EE just beat me too 100 and gave me the drive to get there. I just bought any iron i could rind and made hundreds upon hundreds of iron daggers.

I need to start mining Ebony so I can make Daedric armor. I personally like the look of the Daedric compared to previous games from what I have seen of it which is very little.. Dragonplate is meh appearance wise. I am just not a huge fan. Though I will be wearing it until. Ebony is sleek from what I can tell through the crafting menu. Its almost Black Knight ish.

The Daedric stuff is cool looking...it's just, well, rather evil looking. Didn't line up with the type of character I wanted the play. The Ebony "Black Knight" stuff doesn't really either but it certainly lines up better than that haha. Mostly, it just looks damn cool.

I initially chose the Imperials and then loaded a previous save. I had a real hard time making the choice, but I eventually went Stormcloaks. I didn't really think either side had it directly right, but the Empire getting pushed around by the Dominion didn't really seem to be changing anytime soon.

I didn't have any issues with ice mages because I'm a nord.

Really haven't run into shock mages yet.

I had issues in the cave to the southeast of the Stormcloak city that had all the fire mages because it was bugged on me. All of the NPCs in the dungeon aggro'd to the front of the cave. Later, when I did a quest that had me go in there (to retrieve some sword), it was normal (the NPCs respawned - weird).

The most frustrating enemies I've fought so far are definitely Dreadlord Draugrs. Their Thu'um sends your weapon flying and you have to retrieve it. When you pick it up (if you can find it!), it's unfavorited so you have to go in and fix that and hope you don't get disarmed again.

I'm having issues with my horse. My horse from outside Solitude died. I went back to the shop to buy a new horse and my new horse isn't saddled. I paid the money, he appears whenever I quick travel to a new location so I know he's mine, but he always walks away from me and heads back to the stables...I seriously have to run to catch up to my own horse. He just walks away from me down the road. I'm going to probably just suicide him off bard's leap or something, but it still sucks.

Short Form: be careful buying horses from the same stable as the one that previously died.

On a side note, I watched Beowulf, fast forwarded through Two Towers, and beat the main quest line in Skyrim today. Pretty productive day. Might add Dragonheart for the hell of it.

Now, when I log in, I just get overwhelmed with my quest log and will do a couple things and log out. There's sooo much to do. Having finished the main quest line, there's no incentive for me to just power through parts I'm not enjoying as much. I do love playing as a thief, though. I am not sure I'd call it lucky. The game's component revolves around dragons, so I am very curious to encounter one. So when everyone talk about it, and here I am wandering around, and not seen 1 since the opening sequence it gets frustrating. I already learned a shout, but now need a dragon soul to use it.

But I can see how it's annoying. I used to get annoyed when mountain lions or bears chased me through Westweald in Oblivion, and somehow I'd run near an Oblivion Gate and then I had deadric creatures AND the bear or lion all chasing me, lol.

The way I figure it is that Cyrodil is the center of Tamril so there are more guilds and stuff to do. Skyrim is like Alaska or the wild untamed north. So there is less order and less guilds. When I think of it like that I don't get too annoyed by it.

I'm pretty sure you have to do the first 2 quests in the main quest line.

1st is a dungeon crawl in bleak falls barrow, you learn the unrelenting force shout but can't use it yet. The other is a dragon fight. After the dragon fight you find out you are Dragonborn, and your 1st shout is activated.

Thanks! Yeah, I just did all that yesterday. I got that stuff. My question was that people, from what I read, are getting attacked randomly by dragons and stuff. I have been wandering around, hunting, and collecting ingredients, and haven't been attacked once by a random dragon flying around. So that's why I was wondering if I had to do some of the main quest for it to trigger those random attacks from that point forward in the game.

Similar to Oblivion, where you did the first oblivion gate and from there on gates spawned up everywhere throughout Cyrodil.

I did that went to the high mountain, and came back down, and now roaming around, and I need another dragon soul for one shout I have no can't use. So that's why I was wondering where the heck these over sized lizards are.
