Who in your opinion is the best overall athlete in the league in terms of pure physical ability?

EDIT: Please don't include guys like Julius Peppers who have been caught using performance-enhancing drugs! Clean guys (at least as far as we know)!

Also, PED's not make you an elite athlete. They make elite athletes even better. But the baseline athletic level among those in the league is already in the upper tier to begin with, way above the average joe as a starting point.

Sidney Rice
6-4 185 Gaffney, SC Gaffney

- Regarded to be the best wide receiver prospect in the state
- Caught 57 passes for 897 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior to end his career with 138 receptions for 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns
- Had 38 receptions for 735 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior
- Named High School Sports Report Statewide All-State Team as a wide receiver
- Named High School Sports Report Offensive Player of the Year
- 2002-03 Class AAAA basketball Player of the Year in South Carolina
- Last year averaged 18 points and seven boards a game and helped lead Gaffney to a 28-0 record and the basketball state championship
- Chose South Carolina over Florida, Miami, Tennessee, Georgia, UNC and Syracuse

Being fast at the combine (see Gholston, Mamula) doesn't mean crap in terms of being a great athlete.

Dominating a sport does, IMO. Rice exeled in the 2 biggest sports in high school sports.

And South Carolina is good at hoops. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Jermaine O'Neal, Raymond Felton, etc....

Peppers playing at UNC in hoops and being the best DE in the NFL... he wins hands-down. But Sidney Rice is in the ballpark.

I'd say Megatron, and it isn't even close. He's 6'5" 235 lbs and ran a 4.35 forty without his own cleats plus a 45 inch vertical. The freakiest part of it is that it shows on the field. A few years ago I would've said Randy Moss, but with him out of the league and on the decline this title belongs to Megatron imo.

I'm sick of Peppers, but let's not act like PEDs 'made' him. He was 6'6, 265# coming out of HS. This dude was a major contributor on the court for the Tarheels at almost 280#. His athletic skillset is the highest IMO among all NFL players.

I think Peppers could easily have been on an NBA roster if he chose that route.

Hmm...best overall athletes? I don't consider any of the small, fast guys (most WRs or CBs) to be great "overall" athletes. To me, you have to have a combination of abnormal size, strength, agility, and speed.

The first guy that came to my mind was Vernon Davis. What he did at the combine at his size blew me away.

Peppers was caught using ephedrine his rookie year. Ephedrine is not a PED, it's a diet supplement that suppresses appetite and such. It's not even illegal, it's just banned in the NFL because it can give you a ******* heart attack.

Nah mang i think ephedrine is a performance enhancer. One of my homies in high school who got a D1 scholarship was using that **** all the time. It helped him keep off weight and also was a stimulant. He used it with caffeine and aspirin and he said it made a big difference for him.

Ya here's a link about what I was talking about that Peppers was taking, the ECA stack.

http://asd.dozer.com/faq/eca_stack.htm

"It's designed to produce a thermogenic reaction. It does this by stimulating the central nervous system and increases your metabolism by utilizing your brown adipose tissue to burn fat while sparing lean protein tissue."

That's pretty much what my homey told me too. So ya, Peppers is dirty. But I agree that a lot of these guys are dirty or were at least in college.

Will never understand people in these threads, the question was best overall athlete, not best pound for pound athlete, or most impressive athlete.

Being 6'7 doesn't make you more athletic than a 6' guy.

Guys like Peppers and Mario Williams are impressive for their size but are not superior athletes to close to the majority of the NFL. For instance a guy like David Buehler is a comparable athlete to Mario Williams based on combine results.

The best athletes are nearly all at WR, CB, S and RB with a few TE and LB sprinkled in there.

Vernon Davis is a freak though and goes damn close to winning this, imo.

No, they are just bigger. Size is not an athletic achievement in any way, shape or form. A 6'7 guy who is as athletically gifted as a 6' guy is more impressive but he is not a better athlete. They are very different beasts.

That's just upsettingly wrong. If a guy who weighs 300 pounds runs a 4.6, he is a much better athlete than a guy who runs a 4.6 at 240 pounds. By being as quick at a bigger size, it shows the athleticism because it takes more force to move that mass. It's simple science.

It's more impressive, it is not more athletic. They both achieved the absolute same athletic result. They both ran 40 yards in 4.6, they are equal in their athletic achievement. If you want to argue on science, then their achievements are equal, they produced the same proportionate force given their mass with which to produce it.

I'm not arguing that a guy like Williams is not a more impressive athlete in comparison to a say Steve Breaston due to being that level of athlete at that size but he is not a better athlete, which is the question.

Wogitalia is right. Size is not a componoent of athleticism. It is no doubt more impressive to be able to do the things smaller people can do at a bigger size, and it is definitely beneficial in almost all sports, but it does not make one a better athlete.

The Components of athleticism are as follows:

Endurance
Strength
Power
Speed
Agility
Flexibility
Hand-Eye Coordination
Nerve
Durability
Analytic Aptitude

While being bigger can help you be effective in the sport, it doesn't make you a better athlete.

What about the strength and power that comes with the territory of being 300 pounds and a freak athlete. Mario Williams is certainly going to be stronger than his 200 pound counterpart that is as quick as he is.

It seems like every year there is an athlete coming into the draft like Chris Johnson, Desean Jackson, etc

I've yet to see another athlete like Mario Williams. Guy has left tackle size and strength with linebacker speed and agility. Top athlete DE prospects after him don't even show up in the same blpark.

This is what I came in here to post, clearly someone around here has some intelligence. If you had to ask me who the best athlete in the NFL was tomorrow, I'd still say Julius Peppers. You don't even need to cite any measurables, just watch the guy play. Guys that big don't move that fluidly. Period.

Guys like Mario Williams, Vernon Davis and Calvin Johnson are all amazing athletic specimens in their own right, but there is just something about the way Peppers plays...maybe it's because he beats people even when he's being lazy.

I've had the ephedrine argument so many times. Acting like it's a PED like HGH is stupid, it's a banned drug for noncompetitive reasons. Peppers doesn't need any PED to be as good as he is. The guy is definitely top 2 most athletic, the fact that he was dual sport really adds to his argument.

Speaking of dual sport, Randal El played football, baseball and (limited) basketball at IU. He was drafted by the Cubs right out of highschool, albeit in the 14th round... Not that he is even close to the top athlete, just interesting tidbits.
