Playoff time. It’s been a damn long time. Last playoff home game was this

And this

And then, there was this

And, dammit, this

Coupled with all of this

Now how you feelin? Sorry, but it gets real, right about now. Brees is just so damn good. You combine his insane accuracy with matchup problems like this

I think the defense will show up, but that still means the Saints are going to score at least 24 points. So, long story short, we need a near perfect offensive performance. Alex must be accurate. Can’t have drops. Can’t turn the ball over. Must count by 7 and not 3. No biggie, right?

We have to have a ton of this

And lots of this

And feature this

And hey, what the hell, I haven’t really asked for this so far this season, so how about we get a monster game from this
http://www.nfltouchdown.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/alex-smith-dddddd.jpg

As usual, awesome thread Borat.

Honestly, im not worried about the Saints because unlike the Lions, our secondary is far better and our defense can tackle. The only guy on the Saints im truly worried about is Sproles because he's small and fast and by the time you find him, its too late. Personally, im hoping they play man coverage and bump the receivers at the LOS. I hate seeing the receivers run free into zones where the only thing Brees has to do is beat the air which any QB can do when the receiver is wide open in zone coverage.

I think that our run defense can contain their running game. Getting to Brees is the main thing defensively obviously. Im sure everyone saw the two TE's lining up outside the OT's which is why I would send extra pressure up the middle especially since Brees is short.

Offensively, we must score TD's because FG's wont do crap. And if our defense gets turnovers, we must score off of them. Running the ball and controlling the clock is what we should probably do but for some reason, I see Harbaugh having Smith come out passing. Saints secondary sucks and will give up big plays and yards and points. We just need Crabtree, Davis, etc. to step up and help out Smith. And mainly, the OL must play GOOD or Smith wont have time to do a damn thing.

If Smith has time to pass, I think that Smith can have a good game. Bottom line is that it cant be all on Smith.

And I dont know about anyone else but if we win, im cheering for the Giants on Sunday. :)

Nice thread. I felt good with that confidence-building montage of photos, and then my smile vanished when I saw Brees' photo.

Anyways, hopefully our entire team is focused. Matt Maiocco has a nice article up about the keys to the game for the 49ers. On defense, we gotten the majority of our sacks with our front four. We are probably going to be in nickel situations most of the time, which means Aldon Smith is going to be on the field a lot. So that should be interesting. Hopefully he and Justin Smith have a big game. The Saints have two Pro Bowl guards. No one gets pressure on Brees. The 49ers need to be the ones to finally do it. The good thing about our defense is that we haven't gotten blown out this season, and the most points we've allowed is 27. This game should be within both team's reach going into the final minutes.

On offense, converting third downs is crucial. The 49ers are at 29%. I think that is second worst in the league if I remember. And that's a problem. They almost need to have a perfect day on offense. I'm praying Alex steps his game up and delivers. The Saints defense doesn't scare me. I don't care how much they blitz. Greg Williams apparently likes to blitz the house or just rush three, which is weird to me, but whatever. Alex has generally been good against the blitz this season even though he's been the most sacked quarterback in the NFL. Strange.

Gore has been banged up and I think his days are numbered as a starting back, but I hope this week off has helped him, and I hope he can muster the strength to have a huge game.

Not sure how well Saints fans travel, but I'm assuming it won't be as bad as Pittsburgh when those fans rolled through. Tickets were already sold out the middle of last week. So I don't know what that means. I'm guessing it's good for us, because the Saints fans wouldn't have known if they were going to play another week right? Should be all 49ers fans. Hopefully it's loud as hell.

49ers really need this win. At least one win in the playoffs. I've always felt like the first playoff win is the most difficult for any team. Jeff Fisher said that one time and I agree. You never know what can happen after that, but this game will go a long way towards building the team's confidence even further. My final prediction:

49ers 28
Saints 21

And I know everyone, well most media pundits, will be taking the Saints and we won't stop hearing about how Alex can't do this and that, game manager, etc. But whatever. Game time is around the corner and we will see who is the better team.

Last year's game against the Saints gives me a good feeling about this even though a lot has changed since then. The Saints offense, for one, is playing far beyond the level they did last year, and that is saying something.

On the other hand, we are performing far beyond the level we did last year as well. Still, it is obviously going to be a tough game.

As much as I hate playing a zone soft with only four-man rushes pretty much every play I think that is going to be our best bet in this game. Even though it has been weaker as of late I have faith that our run defense will bounce back with Willis back at 100%. If we take their running game away and keep everything short we can at least make them take a while to move down the field, and then our redzone defense is good enough to hold them to field goals a good percentage of the time.

On offense we need to be more aggressive even when we have a lead. Don't try to get away from what is working just to throw the defense off-balance. If the passing game is working, keep passing until they stop you. Same thing with the running game. The most important factors on offense isn't the running game, imo, it is the protection of Alex Smith and the receivers. The right side of the line is going to be targeted all day and they need to step up and Vernon Davis and Crabtree are going to have to take advantage of every 1-on-1 opportunity they get and catch everything thrown their way.

I do, in fact, see this game going similar to last year's. Brees will attempt at least around 40 passes and the Saints will win the time of possession battle but the 49ers will pin them deep so much and play excellent redzone defense that they will only score in the low to mid-20s. The 49ers offense will have success on the ground and in the air and they will limit mistakes but the redzone offense isn't going to be great, still.

Final
49ers - 26
Saints - 23

49ers kick a last minute field goal for the win.

I am distraught about this game. I'm trying to convince myself we are going to lose so I don't feel bad about it afterwards, but so much about this season has shaken that feeling I usually have around week 4 or 5 of previous seasons, where the losses started piling up and I only had the draft to look forward to.

I need them to win this game and exercise some fanhood demons. Being a Niners fan these past 9 years has been a test of faith (the game that stands out the most is the 41-0 loss to the Chiefs in '06). The Giants rewarded my life-long devotion obsession with a world series win, can the Niners at least win a playoff game? That's all I ask.

The mental coaching battle of Harbaugh vs. Payton in this game is easily one of the most intriguing angles. Scheming and adjustments are major strengths for both and I can't wait to see what these two throw at each other. It should be epic.

Niners win in 4th quarter comeback 34-31.

Well this is why I was such an asshole the majority of the season. These opportunities don't come around often, and as your see some teams and their "windows" just open and close and then it's over. The 49ers might not have another season like this for 10 years or whatever. It wouldn't be that surprising. San Francisco needs to capitalize and show the world that they deserve to chase a championship. No one thought we would make it this far, and now that we have, it's time to put the petal to the metal.

By the way the 49ers are +3 underdogs at home. That surprised me a little. I thought it at the very least it would be +1. I know everyone is harping about the Saints offense, but I mean come on. The 49ers are 13-3 too.

I don't see it that way at all. With all the things going against us as the lockout ended, this should be a indicactor of 49er football trending up. I don't believe in "windows" closing and opening. Good franchises are always in contention because they have comptent front offices, owners who want to win, and great coaching. The New Englands, The Pittsburghs, The Green Bays. Their front office has a overall vision that is in unison with the coaching staff and they go out and excute it personel wise, then the coaches compliment it scheme-wise. Some years are more productive than others but after awhile, it becomes a fine well-oiled machine that sustains itself. That's what we have now in Baalke and Harbaugh. Neither is going anywhere for a long time. And in one short year they have proven that this only the beginning. I fully expect us to be a even better team next year. The record might not reflect it, as our schedule will get alot tougher next year but we'll be a more balanced team next year and be ready for another playoff run. No worries on my end. Niner football looks to be good for awhile.

True that is part of it. But Pittsbugh was always a competive group with Cowher as coach and Tom Brady wasn't excatly a top 5 QB those first two Super Bowl runs with the Pats. Jimbaugh's presence lets me know that we'll always have good QB play. Sortta like Andy Reid and how he always has whoever is under center from the Eagles look like a Pro Bowler. Again, no worries....

One thing I want to see is our D-Line getting there hands up. Brees is only 6'0. Guys need to get some balls batted down. I'd like to see Fangio do something different. Maybe have All-Done stand up and rush the passer as a ILB a couple of times so he can get his huge wingspan right in the face of Brees and maybe tip a few balls.

I'm a little concerned about our run defense. The last three games we've allowed a good average in terms of rushing. I'm starting to wonder if our players are getting tired or what.

Steelers: 4.4 yards per rush
Seahawks: 4.8 yards per rush
Rams: 4.4 yards per rush

Yeah two of those games were road games, but still I think it's a concern. The Saints' passing game definitely opens up their running attack too, which has been dynamite this year. The good news is the the 49ers players got an extra week of rest.

I get the feeling our offense is going to have to win this game for us for some reason...and at least score twenty points. I pray that Harbaugh and Roman have a good game plan against this team.

I already knew it would be like that over there. Which is why I haven't been there all week. It will be interesting to see what they say if the 49ers beat them. I can't remember the last time I saw a board more ridiculous. Even compared to the main 49ers message board. Built-in excuse for Saints. He's worried about another NFC West playoff upset.

I was hoping the Niners grounds crew would figure it out and soak the sh!t out of the field and really turn it into their homefield advantage, where defense and running the ball will be most important.

Hell no. This team can go to Lambeau and win. I aint afraid of Discount Double Check. We just beat the most prolific offense in NFL history, you really think we're worried about havibg to face Green Bay? Taking nothing away from the Packers and that organization but we can play with ANYBODY. Plus the whole Smith vs. Rodgers storyline would be a fun angle to watch during the week. Actually bad weather favors us, as the Packers can't run the ball to save their life. Snow or rain means we run the ball against that porous defense. I still want the Packers. Even though they have Woodson, who is probably the only guy in the league who could neutreulize VD. Would like to see how this team would fair up in Lambeau. Even though they didnt generate any sacks against us, the G-Men D-Line is scary when motivated and they've looked motivated these past few weeks. They have a running game that wouldnt allow us to key in on one element of their offense like we were able to do against the Saints and would be able to do against the Packers. Defending against play-action against Eli would be that much harder because the Giants can actually run the ball.

Niners had the talent but the coaching sucked. Seriously, Mariucci was the last good HC we had and I think that Harbaugh is better than he was already. Nah, the Sproles one was on Goldson. He had Sproles in man-under and he reacted late, then whiffed on the tackle. Sproles in the open field isnt going to get tackled by a SS. I wasn't complaining when Whitner whiffed also.

But the Graham one was defintely on him. Have to play the game smart and realize what's at stake. I know our guys like to make plays on the ball, but realize you are the last line of defense and make the bone-jarring hit instead of going for the int. You're trying to protect a lead, not trying to gain a extra posession. He had a stellar game up until that point. But honestly, if they don't score as quickly as they did, we dont have enough time on the clock to mount our own comeback and watch Alex and VD step up and etch their names in the record books.

But looking at our schedule next year, we face some of the best TEs in the game. We really need to go after that nickel safety who can cover TEs. A hybrid CB/FS type who you can insert into the nickel package and lined them up over the TE. I don't want my All-Pro LB having to worry about covering elite TEs. I thought Reggie Smith would be that guy but apparently Fangio feels more comfortable with our ILBs covering TEs than our back-up safety....not a good sign. I would love for us to sign Jason Allen from the Texans and put him in that role. He has experience at both FS and CB in the league so he can play in space, as well as play man. He's big and fast and should be relatively cheap.

Who do you sacrifice? If Reggie Smith is in the game covering TE's, then Whitner or Bowman is on the bench.

Has to be a LB. We're the only team I've seen that keeps two ILBs on the field in their nickel package. I believe Fangio believes their speed and athleticism allows them to be on the field and handle RBs and TEs in a short zone or man-to-man. But I believe if he had a safety that he felt could handle those duties, Bowman would probably be on the sideline. Sometimes we go 3-3-5, with Whitner dropping down to LB but really, we need a guy that is more adapt to matching up with these new breed of TEs on the active day roster. Whitner should never come off the field really. People dont understand ALOT of reason this secondary is improved is because he is sound in his zone responsibilities and has great recognition skills(usually....that Graham TD aside of course). The game is changing and we need to recognize that and adapt. Plus, I feel its takes one of our biggest playmakers(Willis) away from the LOS puts him down the field and out of his comfort zone. I dont want Willis or Bowman running 30 yards downfiled with a Graham or a Gronk. I want a guy more adapt in turning and tracking the ball in coverage and actually making plays on the ball. In the red-zone I think its ok because the field is condensed and their is less field to cover deep. But anywhere else and i think your playing with fire and as we saw yesterday, your laible to get burned when that happens. Plus I think having a guy in that hybrid FS/CB role would allow Fangio more flexibility and he'd be able to toy with offenses a little.

Madirishman
01-16-2012, 10:36 AM
Whitner also failed miserably on both of the Saints 4th Q touchdowns, though.

He should have gone for the body and not the ball on Graham's play, as Willis was underneath going for the ball. I can see why Whitner did go for the ball, though. If Brees hadn't placed the ball to Graham's right, closer to Whitner, then he would have likely gone for the body to jar the ball lose, or at least, the sure tackle after an amazing catch, assuming Willis didn't deflect it (as the ball would have been in his reach). Graham adjusted to the ball being thrown a little behind him, made a spectacular catch and Willis and Whitner both had gone for the ball instead of the player, leaving them on the ground. It was a great play by a tremendous athlete and those 2 held their won for our D all day. The Saints have a record-setting offense and they are going to make plays. Though he wasn't flawless, I was very impressed with Whitner's play and think he'll only grow into more of a leader on this D.

If you watch the replay you can see a little holding, but Swain slows up. You can see Alex thought thought he was going to maintain speed. And if he does, we're talking either TD or huge gain.

Irvin sometimes follows his lead but usually does better then how Dukes does.Except he is just probably made Smith had made the play offs more so then the Cowboys did sore loser (jk ) Lately the only good thing that comes out of NFL Network is the recruiting senior and draft day and also NFL Red zone, as well as Mike Mayock for the senior bowl week. Other then that I just preliminarily watch it for high lights and once a week updates and Thursday night games.

Irvin still hates the 49ers and it's obvious. Dukes just doesn't want to be wrong. Sanders is like Irvin a little bit, but he's changed his tune and endorsed Alex Smith before this game started. Can't hate that much on Sanders though because of 1994.

Michael Irvin was on NFL Network after the game kind of slighting him a little bit saying that while Alex had a good game, it was against man coverage more so and that next week he'll have to throw it in tighter windows against zone coverage. That kind of irked me a little. Then of course you have Saints fans saying that Alex played against a terrible defense. Keep knocking down the walls Smith.

Oh and Jaime Dukes saying he has to have three HOF type of games to be okay in his book. I wonder what Greg Cosel will say this Thursday via KNBR, if he's on the air.

If Alex was throwing against a primarily zone d.. he'd flip flop his argument. hes just a crackhead hater

Yeah. Since when do we care what crackheads have to say?

I don't give a **** what some has-been junkie says about my team.

Deion suprisingly has really good insight and information a majority of the time. Irvin is just an idiot.

What if the niners put Larry Grant out there to cover TE's on third down? He was tremendous in pass coverage when Willis was out, is that a viable thing to do?

Hey here is a nice video on NFL.com that breaks down the play that Alex and Vernon made happen. It also has some great NFL Films camera work and soundbytes on the sidelines depicting the emotion following the catch and dramatic win. Check it out:

I don't think it would make that much of a difference, Willis athletically can matchup with anyone it's the length of some of the tight ends that gives him problems. Grant would have the same issue.

Guess who made the cover of SI this week?

I really don't like the photo they used for the cover though. Especially because of where the 49ers are from.

The photo is indeed horrible; it almost looks intentional with a bad San Fran stereotype, involving a "train."

Has the SI jinx been documented recently as still legit? I wasn't even sure they printed mags anymore, other than the swimsuit issue. :) I'm much more of a Madden Cover jinx kind of guy and I hope there isn't a Niner on there next year. I'm going to guess it's Rodgers after he gets his regular season consolation MVP award.

Here is the NFL Films Sound FX from the Saints/49ers game. Pretty cool. There is a funny scene in the first minute or so when a fight breaks out between Joe Staley and Will Smith and an official tries to push Smith back saying "Mr. Smith don't do it!".

Eh, it's a regional cover. The Giants got a cover, too.

If there are regional covers, then won't it all but guarantee that SOMEONE will be cursed?!? I think 'the curse' has lost some, if not all, of it's luster.
