Scott, I once again have to take issue with your statements on the Bengals and their supposed history of taking bad character guys in the 1st round. Are they willing to take a risk on a 1st round talent with bad character later in the draft? Absolutely. Are they willing to do so in the 1st round? No.
I thought your persistent mocking of Janoris Jenkins to the Bengals in the 1st was ill-conceived and said so and I still think you were way off on that. Now, you think that them drafting Dre Kirkpatrick proves you were right and that he fits their pattern of taking bad character guys in the 1st? Really?
I'm going to simply list the Bengals 1st round picks in the last decade (since Marvin arrived) and you tell me if you really think Janoris Jenkins wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb in this group:
2003-Carson Palmer- Already married. Very mature. No off field concerns.
2004-Chris Perry- No off the field concerns at all. Team captain.
2005- David Pollack- He was Tebow before Tebow. Virgin. Multiple-year team captain. Outstanding character.
2006- Jonathan Joseph- Quiet, shy guy off the field. No real character concerns. Never in any trouble at all.
2007- Leon Hall- Again, a character guy known for how hard he worked and how seriously he took the game.
2008- Keith Rivers- From a military family and was said to be one of the highest character guys in his draft class.
2009- Andre Smith- Probably the one guy you could say had some off field concerns as he was suspended for 1 game due to talking to an agent and he had weight problems. But never had any actual off field issues at all in terms of arrests, drugs or anything else. (Team passed on Crabtree due in part to his personality/character concerns.)
2010- Jermaine Gresham- No off field concerns. No nonsense, hard working type. (Passed on super talented Dez Bryant despite big WR need.)
2011- AJ Green- Had the 4 game suspension for selling his jersey, but no one really thought of him as a character concern.
2012- Dre Kirkpatrick and Kevin Zeitler- Zeitler with top notch character and Kirkpatrick with the one arrest that was pretty quickly dropped. Probably the biggest character risk of the 11 Bengals 1st rounders of the Marvin era and even he isn't anywhere near the same ballpark as Janoris Jenkins.
