Weeks got his extension, now he needs to stay healthy

umphrey
02-17-2011, 12:28 PM
Awesome. I thought Weeks might walk.

I'd say our chances of signing Prince Fielder next year went from zero to very slim today. Yankees and Redsox are out of the running and with Pujols in free agency there is a chance we can get the #2 guy, Prince Fielder. Pujols will probably stay in STL, but without a contract done already that makes me think he's going to get paid less than expected, which puts Fielders price at less than expected. We might entice him with a home town discount and a really good core of players. Maybe we could even, dare I say, win a playoff series to show him what he can accomplish here.

It's still very, very unlikely but there is a chance, I don't care that it is one in a thousand, you're telling me there's a chance!

I'd say they went from zero to zero. He's as good as gone and you can never count the Yankees or Red Sox out of bidding. There's going to be plent of suitors for him like the Rangers, Orioles, and Giants.

Signing Weeks takes a sizeable chuck of money away from Fielder which to me pretty much concedes any hope of Fielder returning. In fact I thought when Hart was signed long term that Fielder was 100% gone.

GB12
02-17-2011, 03:15 PM
Yeah, even though there was already no chance of re-signing Fielder, extending Weeks made it lower-if that's somehow possible.

I'd much rather try to re-sign Grienke than Fielder anyway. There's probably no chance for that either though.

What an idiot... maybe this should be copied into the Milwaukee Bucks thread as well.

It looks like he will only miss a few weeks in April. I would be more concerned about that injury lingering all season. It's on his right side, so he's going to have to keep stretching it.

umphrey
03-10-2011, 06:43 PM
I'm worried he's going to have trouble getting his stamina up. He might have to spend a few weeks in AAA or have like a 60 pitch limit for a few outings when he's healthy.

He's definetly going to have to start his season in the minors. More than likely it will be single-A Wisconsin though.

Nyjer Morgan is now a Brewer...a better day-to-day option than Gomez
He has a crappy arm, had his worst year last year and gets thrown out way too much - 34/51 on stolen bases with 7 pick offs in 2010... but he's still a great option as a 4th outfielder. It would be interesting to see him play in RF instead of Kotsay to start the year to cover a ton of field with Gomez. I wouldn't be even slightly surprised if we platoon Gomez and Morgan since Morgan has extreme splits against LHP/RHP (Gomez not so much).

the_legend_killer
03-27-2011, 05:35 PM
Morgan's SB% wasn't that great, but potential dickishness aside, he is a few years removed from a .345 OBP and last year his worst OBP ever....was still .20 better than Gomez's career high, lol.

Happy Opening Day Eve!!!!!

I'm more pumped for baseball season in general than I have been in years. Maybe because it kinda snuck up on me since the Packers season lasted so long :)

I'd be even more excited if Greinke didn't go for that damn rebound. But, whatever. injuries happen. get 'em out of the way early.

Can't wait for this. That first pitch is going to feel so awesome. Rumor has it the Packers and Aaron Rodgers will throw the first pitch. Other speculation: Hank Aaron, Bob Uecker.

I'm hoping for Rodgers with an apperiance by Woodson, Driver, McCarthy, Matthews and others. I remember seeing Clay and Raji do it shortly after the draft when I went to Miller park one year and that was really exciting for me.

I'd like to see a little different lineup this afternoon...

Weeks
Morgan
Braun
Fielder
McGehee
Kottaras
Counsell
Gomez
Narveson

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Narveson at 8 and I'm guessing we'll still see the likes of Kotsay in the order and Gomez towards the top

princefielder28

I don't think we are going to win many games with only 2-3 players capable of getting a hit, none of which are Prince. Weeks, Braun, and McGehee are the only ones who haven't been awful at the plate. $30 million dollar man go to work please.

I think this is the first time I've ever watched the Brewers and been confident in 5 starting pitchers albeit still waiting on Greinkes debut. It's crazy how some people are comparing Wolf to Suppan like he's overpaid and awful because of 2 poor games. Some people just need a scapegoat I guess.

Drafted Prince this year. Loving the results so far but I have questions...

Was he always this fat? It doesn't look like he could possibly be a pro athlete with that body. lol. Is he quick enough to pull the ball to right for bombs? All of his HRs have been to left-center.

He used to be fatter and he used to pull everything. He has gotten in better shape and started hitting the opposite way throughout his young career.

haha he used to be fatter. He even went vegetarian pre-2009 I think. He swings for the fences every time he's up and he pulls the ball so much the other team always plays a super shift against him. The fact that he's hitting the ball all over the field is a great sign and will lead to a plus .300 avg if he does it all year, easily. This looks like a great year to have Prince because every year for the past 3-4 years he's had a terrible April to start the year. He actually made player of the week already - usually he waits until the 15th game at least to hit his first HR.

Braun will be a Brewer through 2020

this is teh awesome.

I wish every athlete had the same outlook as Ryan Braun. Here is a guy that grew up in SoCal, went to college in Miami and is Jewish, so I assume he has some ties to NY. He could be a superstar anywhere, but he decided he wants to be a Brewer for life. So many athletes want to make sure they're on the biggest stage and get paid as much as possible. But, Ryan Braun is just happy knowing he'll be Wisconsin royalty for the rest of his career and beyond.

If every baseball player had the same mindset as Ryan Braun, lack of competitive balance in baseball would be much less of an issue.

06-06-2011, 07:18 PM
Brewers selected RHP Taylor Jungmann, RHP, Texas...the kid has been dominant this year and projects to be a top of the rotation type guy with the three + pitches that he possesses...one big concern is his throwing motion and the potential to cause problems for him later on

King Carls 5 Year Plan
06-06-2011, 07:26 PM
i like Jungmann a lot. he doesn't have electric stuff, but he is a winner and a grinder. he does have 3 + big league pitches that he throws for strikes. his biggest red flag, IMO, is that he pitched at Texas and they have been known to over work pitchers. he should be relatively quick to the majors and has all the ability to succeed.

princefielder28
06-06-2011, 07:30 PM
Jed Bradley, LHP, Georgia Tech was the second pick (15th overall) who is another college hurler who projects to work his way up to the majors pretty quickly...four solid pitches, none that are outstanding but all effective...some comparisons to Andy Pettitte

EvilMonkey
06-06-2011, 09:18 PM
love the picks. Neither will win a Cy Young or anything, but I think both can be workhorses who can have an ERA in the 3's every year which if we can keep our lineup strong, should be a perfect fit.

I started a Pick 6 group for Brewers fans if anyone is interested. It's a free fantasy baseball game with ties to Fangraphs. They get about 200 entries per day (so pretty small). What I like about it is you get a new team every day and you can put as much time as you want into it: Some days I'll really look into starting pitchers that day and hitter trends. Other days I'll forget or just pick my regulars in a minute or two.

You get $120 to pick 6 players: corner and middle infielder, outfielder, catcher, starting and relieving pitcher and get points for their day

It was all the lighting. lol.

Even as a Cardinal fan, LaRussa is taking this stuff waaaaay too seriously and coming off as a D-Bag. Granted, I have never been too big of a fan of him. U know chasing off our apparently future stud CF, the DUI, and being way too protective of young pitchers. Among other things. U hit Pujols, we decided to hit Braun. Its all good, thats baseball there. Shoulda ended there, the post game took it too far. Pitchers do need to throw it up and in occasionally. Yes, even tho McClellan beaned Nyjer which I love, if it was intentional we took it too far. And Molina deserves at least 5 games.

Yo struggled in the first (there's no forgiving that) but our pitching staff gave up no runs the rest of the game and last night's loss is on the offense's shoulders...we continue to struggle hitting with runners in scoring position and that in large part comes from an ice cold Weeks in the fifth spot
