Well, I hope Jon does well. He was off to a slow start in AAA but looked great in his last outing.
Yeah very true. Hopefully the Pirates won't be ready for his CB.

I'm still crazy for Johan. Greinke is just the new tow in the toy-box. 2 months from now we'll see who's doing what.
We are in first.
I hope we'll keep on rolling and don't relinquish our spot.

I'm getting a Mets Jersey. I'm not sure who to get so here's my pros/cons
Johan Santana
Pros-Team's best player. Name recognition
Cons-Ugly number in 57. Only plays once every 5 games
David Wright
Pros-Plays everyday. Leader of the team. Name recognition. Likely to be a Met for a long time
Cons-Seems everyone and their mom has a Wright jersey
K-Rod
Pros-Not many people have them. Big FA acquisition
Cons-REALLY UGLY number in 75. Not sure if I want to support the bullpen that has yet to give me confidence
I had a feeling that Bennett was going to walk Beltran there. He couldn't control the strike zone at all in that inning.
Great comeback.

I was at the game tonight. It was good to see our first comeback win. Pelfrey had his best stuff of the year tonight.

I have a wright one too. It's probably the safest bet out of the three, but your right everyone has it. If I was in your situation I would probably go with the Santana jersey
Great comeback. We seem to do well against Tim Lincecum.

Mets have the best record in baseball for the month of May.
Anyone want to throw out their predictions for Wrights and Reyes numbers for this year?
I just hope they do well.
With Gado on DL, does Tatis take over the 1B job?
Personally, I think he's the best option.

I just said it in the baseball thread but it's funny that Wright was slumping and his average hardly dipped below .300. This years team is really putting it together so I say they just get a lead big enough where we don't have to worry about them blowing it.

I guess Tatis and Murphy are going to split time there. Maybe we should take a look at Brad Nelson who just opted for FA?

I still think we can win if we add another bat but Jerry just really leaves you scratching your head a lot. He wasn't like this last year.

It sounds like a good combo. I was going to get a Murphy shirt but I'm too worried about that now. I'm itching to get a new player jersey shirt though so I'll probably go Rodriguez or Johan for that.

I wanted a player shirt but they were expensive online for some reason. I got an actual jersey for 30 dollars and places wanted 20 just for the t-shirt
Talking about prospects, Fernando Martinez had a 2-HR game the other day. He has 7 on the season.
His biggest problem in the past has been ability to his lefties.
So far this season vs. Lefties:
.303/.395/.515
I hope he keeps progressing. He's a BIG-TIME talent.

He's been unconscious in May so far. If he does this for another month he has to be here end of June or a little earlier.
Some Additional names.
From St. Lucie:
OF Carlos Guzman...will be 23 in a couple of days, but he has serious power.
SS Hector Pellot....still pretty young and he's starting to hit
SP Angel Calero....one of the most talented pitching prospects in our system, he has to be there
RP Nick Carr.....Young reliever who can hit high-90s on the gun.
Most of St. Lucie's players are interesting prospects.
From Savannah:
SP Elvin Ramirez...talented pitching prospects with a power sinker.
SP Robert Carson....Very surprising that you didn't include him, good prospect.
SP Kyle Allen...yeah, his ERA is high, but he's a 19-year-old with good stuff. Plus his peripherals look good.
RP Josh Stinson...he's been pitching at A- for awhile, but he's still young enough and also an interesting prospect.
And then there is Nick Evans......
.093/.218/.227......:(
Yeah, don't include him.
Giantsfan1080

K-Rod is fine already. He reported to the clubhouse this morning with no problems. Also, Parnell has been above and beyond what anyone thought as well. As we were saying if he can throw that slider consistently he looks like a future closer.

Josh Thole continues to hit. He is also throwing out a good percentage of runners.
Talented catcher prospect.
He's only talented if he can improve his defense behind the plate, which is pretty bad from all reports. This is a big year for him to prove he can play some defense. Since he has almost no power to speak of he's really going to need to play some good defense to help justify him being an almost an every day catcher.
Granted the guy can hit, but with no power, and no defense it kind of creates an imbalance at one of the most defensive oriented positions in the game.

His defense has gotten much better this year. They say he's already made a huge jump where he could at least be average behind the plate in the majors. I think his caught stealing rate is also in 20% range.

As I posted in the MLB thread, I wouldn't be shocked at all to get something similar to the 07 Sheffield now. That's quite a boost. I always liked the move just because it got us some power off the bench, and at the time someone who could play for Murphy or Church with a lefty on the hill. But he looks like he has something left in the tank.
The lack of King Fernando today was appalling. I cannot deal with Angel Pagan.
I still hate Sheff.
But if he helps us win a championship, I can.....I can.....learn to tolerate him.....somewhat.....maybe.

I can't help but wonder if he's been quieter and a better influence because of the fact his uncle is Dwight Gooden, who we all know he has tremendous respect for.

I was also indifferent towards the Sheff move but he's winning me over. Also, we need to DL Reyes and Church and bring up Fernando and Ruben Tejada.

Beltran is having an MRI on his knee tomorrow now. Rumor is Malo is already in NY and if an OF goes on the DL Fernando will indeed get the call up.

I've never seen a stretch of injuries like this on a baseball team. Hope he's ok because if he goes down then I really don't want to see the lineup we have to trot out there. It would be like the 2003 Mets.

GF1080, watch out for Robert Carson. He's been putting up fantastic stats thus far through his career and is a sleeper. Not to mention, lefthanded
Juan Lagares is finally hitting. It took him long enough at that level. He's still pretty young.
Mets tend to rush teenage prospects a bit too much.

His average is much better this year but his K:BB still scares me . 5:37 right now. He's still very young as you said but he's dimmed a little for me.
What is it with all of these controversial HRs involving the Mets lately?

I remember in Spring Training last year he was excellent.
We'll see how much power he'll develop. He'll probably never going to be a big HR hitter, but he gets on base, steals bases and plays good defense.

We traded Castro to the White Sox for Lance Broadway. He throws 88=91 and his curve and change are his best pitches. He's a former 1st round pick but his numbers haven't been that good. I think Schneider's defense has been severely overrated. I was expecting a whiz behind the plate and he hasn't really shown me much. I hope we keep starting Santos as it seems the pitchers like to throw to him much better. There were actually a lot of numbers last year that pitchers threw better to Castro than Schneider.
Broadway at best will probably be a 7th inning guy for us even though he is a SP. He can definitely come up and give us a spot start if we ever needed it. Dillon Gee is probably the best comparison for him but Gee throws a little bit harder.
I don't like that trade at all.

I like Castro as I said, but he's a backup catcher. It's not like this is one of the worst moves ever. Broadway is like Dillon Gee and maybe he can make it as a 5th starter. Nobody in their right mind was giving up more than Lance Broadway for Castro.

Yea, I don't get that trade at all. Castro has proven he can play since he has been apart of this organization.
Omir has been playing great, but how long is going going to keep it up? Mets fans are already calling for this guy to be the full time starter, but this trade seems out of haste assuming he will be able to contribute at this current pace, or close to it. Just reminds me of the situation surrounding Ruben Gotay.

Indeed..
I'd like to see Holt going to AA as well. I mean since that first game where he gave up like 9 runs he's been pitching insanely well. He's literally dominating the competition around him like it's nothing.
I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a September call up at the rate he's pitching.
I doubt Holt gets called up this year.

I wouldn't be shocked if Holt got a Sept call up. He may just call him up and not pitch him. The only thing is he's not on the 40 man but anything can happen between now and then. I really think if Rustich stays healthy he could help us out this year though. He's got the best all around stuff in the system.

Putz out 8-10 weeks. Reyes out at least 3 weeks with a slight tear in his hamstring tendon, not the hamstring itself. I'd like to see Tejada called up and either Switzer, Nieve, or Kunz for Putz.

Fernando Nieve called up to replace Putz. I like the move as he does have very good stuff. Also, Brad Holt is supposed to get his first AA start tonight if it doesn't get rained out.
Go Holt!

Everybody welcome LHP Steven Matz to the Mets. He's a local kid from Long Island. Throws up to 94 is all the info I have so far.
Projectable HS pitcher.
YEAH.
Now sign and develop him.
SS Robbie Shields
Shields could ascend up draft boards next spring much like Gordon Beckham did during the spring of 2008 with a strong junior campaign. He, like Beckham the year before, enjoyed a fine summer on the Cape this past year, although his time was cut short when he injured his wrist sliding into a base. With very good bat speed and solid offensive tools across the board, Shields has the talent to be a game-changing infielder, with the ability to hit for a high average and power while also having good enough wheels to be a threat on the basepaths. His bat speed comes from very strong hands, wrists and forearms, and he knows how to loft balls to give him double-digit home run potential. Defensively he doesn't have ideal range at the shortstop position, as many feel he may have to move to either 2B or 3B down the road, but he has plenty of arm strength to play any infield position. He does run well and shows good overall baseball instincts. Shields has posted solid numbers since stepping onto campus, including his two summer stints (he was named one of the top prospects in the Clark-Griffith League after his freshman year), and has started at Florida Southern from day one. He is poised for a big junior year, as more and more people will become familiar with his name between now and next June.

Without diving in too deep, this draft is meh. Some picks I love, some are just ok, some I really hate. I will go into detail later.
I just got home.
I missed the whole day 2.
I have a lot of reading and research to do.
Ok, so far the draft does sound underwhelming. But I think we should reserve judgment until these players start playing pro.
I think Omar has done a solid job of drafting over the last couple of years. And those drafts looked underwhelming at the time also.

With the draft over I think we did a pretty good job this year. It seems like we might have to buy a lot of guys out of their college commitments which is usually a sign they are higher upside guys. We took a ton of lefties also which can always work out well if a couple of them pan out. A lot of interesting players this year.

My Draft Review. I'm not an expert, but I do know a good bit about a solid chunk of these players after really diving into scouting reports, video, etc. These are my thoughts.
2, 72: Steven Matz, LHP: Like to see it. Local HS LHP with good potential. Nice fastball and above average offspeed stuff already. Count me on board.
3, 103: Robbie Shields, SS: Not in love with it. Eh type of pick. Compares to Aaron Hill, but at a premium power position like 3B. Oh yeah, and he doesn't have the best thing about Aaron Hill which is the glove.
4, 134: Darrell Ceciliani, CF: I've seen worse. Poor Mans Jacoby Ellsbury. I like the tools, but I'm not in love with him at 134.
5, 164: Damien Magnifico, RHP, North Mesquite HS: Power arm. Smallish, but already throwing 94. He's raw, but has very strong potential it seems. Definitely going to have to overslot.
6, 194: David Buchanan, RHP, Chipola JC: Great arm. Control is an issue. Seems a bit early to me, but it's not terrible.
7, 224: Darin Gorski, LHP, Kutztown U: Hate it. Soft tossing lefty who at best is a LOOGY? No thanks.
8, 254: Taylor Freeman, C, McNeese State, L/R, 6'0", 200, 8/24/87- Not a huge fan. Seems like a good college player, but I don't think it translates, personally.
9, 284: Jeffrey Glenn, C, Winter Haven HS, R/R, 6'3", 185, 9/22/91-Couldn't find much of anything on the kid.
10, 314: Nick Santomauro, RF, Dartmouth- Solid. I think he could have a shot at being a decent pro at one point. Not a bad pick at all here.
11, 344: Samuel Honeck, 1B: Don't foresee him being much of anything.
12, 374: James Ewing, 2B, Southern Miss: Player built for the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Mets? Probably not.
13, 404: Zachary Dotson, LHP, Effingham County HS: Committed to UGA. Seems like a good projectable guy with very good stuff. I think it will be tough, but a lot of promising things in this article.
http://savannahnow.com/node/737000
14, 434: Ronald Harris, CF, Northwood U: Indifferent.
15, 464: Casey Schmidt, RHP, U San Diego: Interesting. Hurt 2 years ago, and had to sit out due to transfer rules this year. Great stuff, but I doubt he signs.
16, 494: Jeffrey Greene, CF, West Boca Raton Community HS: I liked this one. Good speed and range. Probably won't hit for a lot of power, but can handle the bat.
17, 524: Alexander Gregory, OF, Radford U: I liked this one. Possible Three True Outcomes guy. Intriguing.
18, 554: Cody Holliday, OF, Wilmington Col: Brooklyn Cyclone type.
19, 584: Nelfi Zapata, C, English HS: A pick I liked a lot. Plus arm, good catching skills, and plus power potential. Only a JUCO committ.
Starting to skip around now.
25, 764: Joshua Dunn, 3B, Sickles HS: Really can't complain here. Appears to be leaning towards signing and another team was supposed to draft him in the 4th, but couldn't get a deal in place. Won't cry if he doesn't sign. Worth the risk.
31, 944: Mitchell Haniger, RF, Archbishop HS: Big potential guy. Tough sign in my mind. 2 sport star going to Cal Poly.
Like Marisnick, Haniger showed plus-power potential at the plate and a strong arm in the outfield. He made solid contact in two of his at-bats, driving one ball off the very top of the left field wall for a triple. Haniger is listed at 6-feet-2, 180-pounds and showed off a powerful throwing arm from right field.- Baseball America
42, 1274: Ryan Gunhouse, C, Clear Creek HS: I loved this pick. Might just be my favorite. Final Five in the PowerShowcase. Here is a scouting report:
Ryan Gunhouse is a 2009 C/3B with a 6'2'', 185 lb. frame from League City, TX who attends Clear Creek. Tall athletic body, very good build, good bat speed at the plate, strength in swing, quick hands, stays inside the ball some, gap to gap pop, aggressive hitting approach, one of the best looking hitters at the event, big arm strength behind the plate, quick exchange, feet work well, high-level college prospect, lots of tools to work with.
It's going to be a hard sign, but this is a kid we should really go all out for.

I liked his approach when he was first called up even though it took him 9 AB's to get his 1st hit. Right now he's just swinging at anything close though. He got 3 hits yesterday but I'm sure once we're done in the AL parks he gets sent back down.

1 impressive hit yesterday. One was a dribble to second and the barely rolled passed third, and might even get changed to a FC. I didn't expect a ton from him, but he's just confirmed that he's not ready yet. Oh well. Hopefully we get a bat in the OF and he can play out there in a much less pressure packed spot, with more experience under the belt.

Yeah you can tell he certainly has the skills. He has a really quick bat which is going to help when he puts it all together.
Good to see Ike is finally hitting for power. Nice start for Niese as well.
I hope they keep it up.

We are used to it as Mets fans. More dissapointment than celebrating usually. I'm still going down to Camden on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday to cheer them on though.

Good pickup with Jim Ed Warden. He's the only recent, irrelevant Mets pickup I approve of. A tall, sidearmer, he's already 30, but his ability to get ground ball outs could get him a cup of coffee, maybe more

I'm not sure if we'll see him ever. There are plenty of guys ahead of him on the depth chart plus they sent him to AA. St. Lucie might be sending guys up to Binghamton soon as well so he may be replaced. I 'm pretty sure we plucked him out of the Atlantic League so I'm not really expecting anything, but since I appreciate your view I'll definitely keep an eye out on him.

I hope we sign some of those talented HS kids.
I hope Omar doesn't go slot-happy again. No more appeasing Selig.
Ryan Gunhouse's dad is posting on another site and he says Gunhouse is very signable. Unforunately for us he also said it doesn't look as of now that Gunhouse is a high prioirty but we'll see. Just drafting these HS too look good doesn't do anything if you don't sign them. I don't want them all signed but at least half would be nice.

Yeah I think it's a possibility but as always it depends on what the asking price is. I'm sure Omar has been doing his due dilligence and asking around for who's available and at what cost. The thing with Hawpe is that the Rockies are playing excellent baseball lately and they're right back in contention for the Wild Card race.

Kid has to be pretty legit. We've been in on him forever, and we normally don't break the bank because Omar can usually find much more cost efficient talent.
But basically, he is a projectable lefty with the potential to have a plus fastball and a plus curve, has good bloodlines, and knows how to pitch already. Hard to not like this.

6. Reese Havens
7. Jon Niese

9. Jeurys Familia

Tejada would be at 11.
Excellent list Giantsfan.
I would also be tempted to add Steven Matz.

Did you leave Matz and Urbina off on purpose or do you just think they don't belong in the Top 20?

Oh man, I can't believe I forgot Matz. He definitely belongs. I'll edit my list. Thanks man.
Urbina, well, he's an unknown at this point. I mean, I have Puello at #19 and he is a very talented teenager also.

No problem. I love that you have Familia at #7. My top 5 would look a little different that yours though. I also am a little higher on Lutz than you appear to be. I'd put him at #20 instead of Puello.

When I first started putting this list together, I was expecting Lutz to make it, he can hit, but I quickly ran out of room.
There are plenty of interesting prospects in this system.

Yeah it is much more interesting than it has been the last year or 2. I still firmly believe we'll be in the 12-15 range on most rankins even though the cool thing to was kill our farm all year.
