New Orleans Saints

Positions of need: LB, OL, DL, WR, S

Needs Analysis: Sean Payton was excited to bring coordinator Rob Ryan and his 3-4 defense to New Orleans. Now they just need players to fit a unit that can't get much worse. With their two early picks, the Saints should focus on the pass rush and on stopping the pass rush. Cameron Jordan fits beautifully as a 3-4 defensive end, but the Saints could still use another building block on the line. Payton says that the team's left tackle spot keeps him up at night, which makes the position a possible first-round target. The depth at wide receiver and safety looks poor, but those will be viewed as luxury spots. This defense needs an overhaul.

Real Draft:
Round 1, Kenny Vaccaro SS
Round 3, Terron Armstead OT
Round 3, John Jenkins DT
Round 5, Kenny Stills WR
Round 6, Rufus Johnson DE

Interesting draft for the Saints here. I'm a big fan of Mingo and I think he'd would be a lethal weapon in Rob Ryan's 3-4 defense. But the rest of the draft was fairly underwhelming otherwise. That said, I know Rob Ryan can squeeze the juice out of his players. A guy like TJ McDonald who in some systems would appear to be a liability, could actually have a nice impact as an in the box safety or even be used as a Nickel LB the same way Barry Church was used in Dallas. Chase Thomas might not have the wheels to burn but he's a sure tackler and has good length. His smart is what he will need to rely on in order to sharpen up his instincts. Gratz has a fan in Mike Mayock and that should count for something. If Wagner, Wilson and Stweard help the depth, then this draft can be considered a success. But as with all post draft grades, they are mostly meaningless until the fruits are shown. Sean Payton is back so I think by default the Saints will win more games.

Season Prediction: 10-6

Carolina Panthers

Positions of need: DL, WR, OL, CB, S

Needs Analysis: The good news: This draft is mostly deep where the Panthers are looking for help. The bad news: They can go in a lot of directions because they have so many roster holes. Carolina reached for two DTs early in the 2011 draft because the organization was bankrupt at the position. The situation isn't much better now. If a talented wide receiver, cornerback or safety falls to Carolina early on, the Panthers could veer away from their most pressing needs. Cam Netwon could use more weapons; veteran Steve Smith isn't getting younger, while youngster Brandon LaFell is entering a contract year. The team added some veteran depth in the secondary via free agency, but it's one of the most talent-poor cornerback and safety groups in the entire NFL.

Real Draft:
Round 1, Star Lotulelei DT
Round 2, Kawann Short DT
Round 4, Edmund Kugbila OG
Round 5, A.J. Klein ILB
Round 6, Kenjon Barner RB

Mock Draft:

I like the 1st two rounds of the Panthers real draft and mock draft. After that it was kind of average. Although, the mock draft did address the needs better than what the Panthers did in real life, imo. Got help along the DL in Hankins, WR in Patterson, OL in Becton, CB in Price and S in Williams. Hit all marks on NFL.com's Positions of Needs list! That said, the value of the players picked really wasn't that good when you look back with hindsight. Patterson was a late 20's pick, Hankins was a 3rd rounder. So the Panthers definitely reached here. I'm not a fan of Duke Williams. Limited range and doesn't always wrap up his tackles. I do like Becton. I think with solid development he could be a swing tackle candidate at the very least. The Panthers are in a very tough division and I still think they are a few pieces away from being able to take the division from the Falcons and Saints.
