Recommend a movie, any movie something you think everyone should see at some point in their life. Something you think no one should miss.

I recommend High Tension

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/DaRaidersEdge/ht.jpg

PLOT-
Two female college students, Marie and Alexa, set off to Alex's parent's secluded homestead in the country to relax and study. Come nightfall, Hell pulls up at the front door when a mysterious killer breaks in and kills Alexa's father, mother, brother and pet dog. Alex is now bound and gagged, taken off by the killer, with Marie not far behind eluding the intruder. Can she save her friend's life in time? Or is everything all that it seems...?

Horror fan or not I think everyone should check out this flick, its one of the most suspenseful movies to come out in a long time. Now I know not everyone likes blood & guts in there movies but trust me if you are thinking about renting a horror or thriller make it High Tension.

I would recommend "The Man of the Year". Not the Hollywood, Robin Williams one, but the Brazilian one. Some people have compared it to "City of God" although I wouldn't say that. Still a very good movie to check out.

One of my favorite films of all time, it follows a young mathematician as he seeks the numerical secret behind all life. As he decends deep into numbers he doesn't understand, the viewer is left to wonder whether what he is experiencing is real or a massive paranoid delusion. The first major film by one of the best filmmakers today, Darren Aronofsky, it is an absolute must watch flick.

You had to take it for what it was, an over-the-top, tetosterone driven Action Fest. You're not going to enjoy it unless you suspend disbelief. It wasn't very historically accurate and blaming it all on that little hobbit creature was ridiculous. But other than that you got your moneys worth.

The acting terrible.

Valid points, thank you for speaking. But the same can be said of Star Wars, the dry dialogue, unknown actors. To tell you the truth, I kind of liked the fact that they didn't hire a high profile actor like Colin Ferrel as the lead.

And about the fight scenes, I watched the History channels documentary about the battle of Thermopylae and the experts on the show described the battles back then as intermittent affairs - both sides 'flurrying' and then dropping back to recover, then advancing again.

I thought the acting was actually good overall. It's not The Godfather, but the acting required was minimal and I thought it was all well done.

Fight scenes were probably the best I've seen. Visually, it was spectacular.

The point of building that wall was to funnel the Persians into the pass of Thermopylae.

I'll ignore the ironic grammatical error in your next point and just say that the speeches weren't anything original or groundbreaking but they did the job.

The movie was entertaining and I think it's really pushing movies forward in a lot of aspects. I'd compare it to the Matrix because it's going to change the way movies are made.

But, to each his own. I personally thought it was an excellent movie and I believe a lot of the criticism it has received is unfair. That said, it's a movie, either you like it or you don't.

How many movies do you know that are completely historically accurate? Does the fact that their formation was not completely accurate really lower your enjoyment of the movie? Even a movie like Goodfellas (which is one of the more historically accurate movies) takes liberties and changes things to make it more enjoyable.

I don't care about the formations... I only talked about them because he brought it up when he said he was watching the History channel.

The wall though.. I know thats what it was for, but consider this. What was the point of building it if they were going to stay infront of it. If they stayed in the valley. Why wouldn't the Persians just take it down in 5 mins?

The wall was a pointless waste of time, as was 1/2 of the money. I don't know how this movie pushes the industry forward at all. The stopping ever 5 seconds was annoying. The colors got old fast and were nothing new.

I think I am going to stick with the critics who pretty much said it sucked on this one.

"The stylized action, set to crunching guitar riffs, feels suffocating in its artificiality. Dialogue, taken mostly verbatim from Miller, comes cribbed from T-shirt slogans (real men wear crimson!) and Bruce Springsteen songs (no retreat, no surrender!).." -Los Angeles Daily News

The story had some continuity issues and the writing wasn't all that great, but it was basically directly adapted from the comic book. The sense I got is that the director decided they had enough of a working plot and script and that the one thing the comic book left wide open for interpretation was the action.

And they did the action about as well as I've ever seen it done. The camera angles were fantastic, they managed to capture exactly as much of the fight as they wanted at any given time, it was simply brilliantly presented. Add in the fact that the choreography was super and the interpretation of Spartan fighting style was quite interesting, and you've got action done right.

A friend of mine commented as we were leaving the theatre that Children of Men's hand-cam action scenes (which were the most impressive display of cinematography I have ever seen) has ruined most action films for him, and while I agree that this camera work didn't amaze like Children of Men's did, it did a great job of immersing you in the action, and at no time did a shot seem awkward.

I give it an 8/10 since I see what the film makers were going for, but I think that they hit a few bumps in the road, especially early on.

I'm not getting your point on the wall. They were just standing in front of it at the time. I'm not expert on the subject but I'd imagine fighting over a wall would be difficult. What is so hard to comprehend about the wall? It was completely pointless. If they stand to the side of the wall, behind it also, the Persians could just take it down. If they stand infront of it there was no point in it at all. It was the weakest excuse for a wall ever not to mention... Like the Persians couldn't just use one of their 2000000000 foot tall elephants to knock it over.

I think the point is, that the wall in the movie is historically accurate, not a bit of hollywood fantasy. The wall was called the Phocian wall, and actually was newly rebuilt at the time of the battle. The fact they fought in front of the wall shows they were using it as a reference point for the battle, not for any kind of defense. This is according to histories of the battle. I realize in the context of the movie perhaps it was silly, but people have also ripped this movie for not being historically accurate. Now a part that actually is historically accurate is being ripped.

A movie I really liked was Owning Mahoney starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It's a true story about a bank manager in Canada who's gambling addiction leads him to issue himself a 10 million dollar load to play in Atlantic City. It's kind of slow but Hoffman does a great job of capturing how real a gambling addiction can be.

He did write, direct, and star in the movie. It's tough to say he's stupid and then claim a movie that he basically created by himself.

Permanent Midnight, a true life memoir of heroin addicted sitcom writer Jerry Stahl, is a great dark comedy starring Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Hurley, Owen Wilson, and Maria Bello.

for more laughs try, 200 Cigarettes with Paul Rudd, Dave Chappelle, and Ben Affleck.

Probably not for everyone, but those are my types of movies.

Love Actually is a really fun film. Seems like a chick flick, so some people might have passed on it, but it's definitely funny enough for the manly man too.

The pursuit of happyness was okay... not Smith's best work but, worth watching.

Go rent/buy... The Departed and Children of Men if you want to see amazing movies.

What upcoming movies are you all looking forward to?

Myself:

Fracture (Anthony Hopkins/Ryan Gosling)
God of War (Video Game turned movie... starring Djimon Hounsou?)
The Fighter (A look at the early years of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his brother who helped train him before going pro in the mid '80s... Mark Walberg/Matt Damon)

Not much has sparked my interest for this year... Fracture is do out this year but, when the God of War movie and The Fighter are coming out is anyone's guess... not anytime soon, though.

Did anyone here actually find those pg-13 "horror" movies scary? The ones I'm referring to are the Ring and the Grudge. I remember hearing review after review about how scary they were. Seriously, what a joke... these pre-teen "horror" movies are just laughable. Perhaps it's just me... i dont find anything scary since my parents traumatized me as a child... seeing Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Halloween all before your 8th birthday will do that to a kid. Ha. Anyone actually know of any newer "scary" movies that might actual get me to jump. Perhaps I just cant be scared anymore.
