I still remember when I was in 5th grade my class had a discussion about the best invention of the 20th century. One kid, in all seriousness, was convinced that the only answer was the PS2 controller's rumble pack.

Really? A bunch of people started using an extremely well thought up progression of sounds created by moving your lips and teeth that allowed for very specific communication between each other. Sounds like a great invention to me; how is it not one and how would it get the thread locked

Because it's a religious discussion.

Because it's a religious discussion.

Invention: the creation of something in the mind resulting from study and experimentation

I think that covers languages, even trivial ones like Pig Latin

Sorry for not clarifying. I meant that if I were to present my view, it would become a religious discussion, and the thread would get locked.

WTF does religion and language have in common?

If language isn't an invention than nothing is. Language is harnessing what we are giving just like the tv is connecting a bunch of junk that we were given... Even fire is an invention.

Zim3031
04-19-2007, 07:18 PM
Because it's a religious discussion.
Even if it does tap into Religion in a certain way, this topic hardly discusses the origin of a certain invention so much as its actual state of existence and impact on the world. Whether or not its origins may be rooted within someone's personal beliefs is irrelevant. You could very well say that every invention is rooted in religious beliefs in some way.

The Unseen

My point is that I don't think language qualifies as an invention. Explaining the reasoning is a religious topic.

snuff, I don't think fire is an invention. An invention is taking natural materials and making a unique object from them. The harnessing of fire may be an invention, but that could be stretching it.

i still don't understand how religion has anything at all to do with language... even chimps have a primitive form of communication...

but if you count language as an invention... or at least a common language, then it is easily the greatest and most important of all time.

So i guess the machine that actually harnasses it is an invention, but nonetheless, the printing press is the MOST IMPORTANT invention of all time, maybe not the BEST of all time, because that is a matter of opinion, but you cant argue what the Printing Press has done for the world!

This thread begs the question whether or not you can choose one invention that hinges on an earlier one...

Such as can you say car is the best invention, when there would be no car without a wheel? Or does that relegate you to say wheel?

I'm reallly goin with the internet though, i'm not sure it is even that close.

I would have to agree that the internet is near the top of the list, a more modern version of the printing press. Both have dramatically changed the way that people access, distribute, and consume information in their own right/time period.....

the only advantage that the internet may have is the free and constant access to porn.

I wouldn't call language or electricity an invention, more of a discovery. Alphabet(writing) and Power generators(or whatever) are inventions. My top-5 list in no order.

Writing
Wheel
Internet
Irrigation
Animal captivity

With the exception of the internet, all of these wouldn't not only make life now much more inconvenient and weird, but would make life completely different than it is now. COMPLETELY. No writing, no language, no history, no knowledge. No wheel, no travelling long distances with heavy loads. No irrigation, we're all living on the coast. No animal captivity, no consistent supply of meat, and the world's population would not have grown so large.
