View Full Version : Stupidest/Worst Play Ever

Since we have a "Greatest Play Ever" I thought we could have the worst/ stupidest plays ever. Mine is:
With less than 10 seconds left on the clock, and the Browns clinging to a 39–37 lead, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green dropped back to pass, but the entire Browns defensive line swarmed him and it appeared to be a game winning sack. However, Green tossed the ball to tackle John Tait just before he went down. Unfortunately, Rudd was the only player who did not see this, and after getting up, took off and threw his helmet in the air in celebration, thinking Green was sacked and the game was over. Tait rumbled to the Browns 25-yard line where he was knocked out of bounds. That would have been the end of the game there, but Rudd's premature helmet toss drew the Browns an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which moved the ball to the 13 yard line (half the distance to the goal), and since football games, by rule, can not end on a defensive penalty, Chiefs kicker Morten Andersen booted a 30-yard field goal with no time left, to win the game 40–39.

Off the top of my head, because it happened against San Diego, Aaron Brooks with the Saints throwing the ball backwards when the pressur was coming in on him. Not sure of the year, but I sure remember it was a pretty stupid play.

Eh... That was a bull **** call, Rudd thought it was a sack (barely wasn't) it's not his fault that an o-lineman rumbled for 30-40 yards after it, it was just bad luck.
Stupidest player (with 2 plays) ever would have to be that guy from the Cowboys d-line that messed up the kick and then celebrated and fumbled before the goal line, funny stuff.

Didn't Brooks try to throw it to an offensive linemen to avoid being sacked?

It's hard to imaigne what was going through his mind at the time...but that would have been my best guess...in hindsight it wasn't a great decision.

I remember when the Lions were in the playoffs 12 or 13 years ago and Scott Mitchell was at QB. He was attempting to lead the team to a 4th quarter comeback. It was 3rd down, he completed a little 2 yard pass (making it 4th down) and he ran up to the line to spike the ball to stop the clock. Turnover on downs.

Well, from last year, the first thing that comes to mind is when Kiwanuka (NYG) let go of Vince Young and he continued to ran and got a 1st down. I understand he didn't want to get a penalty, and it shows the effect of the ridiculous QB penalties. Nonetheless, pretty stupid.

I would say when Ty Detmer headbutted the wall and was out for the year that was the dumbest s**t ive ever seen.
Also a couple years ago when Desmond Howard was on the Lions, he had just come back from a neck injury and had just returned a kickoff for a TD and he ran to the sidelines Robert Porcher ran up behind him and slapped him really hard on the helmet and strained his neck. He was out for the rest of the year, i think that can be blamed simply on Lions karma though

When the Bucs lost that MNF game to the Colts on an idiotic Unsportsmanlike Conduct call...
ugh
2 that haven't been mentioned:
Matt Hasselbeck guaranteeing an OT victory ("we want the ball and we're gonna score")and then throwing an INT TD to Al Harris on the ensuing drive.
In Super Bowl VII, K Garo Yepremian picked up a blocked kick and frantically tried to throw a pass, only managing to whiff it up in the air where he batted it right into the hands of a defender. The he failed miserably in his "tackle attempt".
When the Bucs lost that MNF game to the Colts on an idiotic Unsportsmanlike Conduct call...
ugh
I believe the call you are speaking of was not Unsportsmanlike Conduct, but rather some other rare penalty on a missed FG attempty by Vanderjerk. Simeon Rice jumped up to block the kick and landed on a lineman's foot by mistake, and then in typical fashion the refs made up some ghost penalty so Peyton could win on the ensuing FG attempt from closer range. We never should've let them back in the game anyway.

You're right on the call, but this is what happened:
Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate placekicker in NFL history, actually missed the ensuing 40-yard attempt, but the Buccaneers were flagged for a penalty that seemed impossible to understand. DE Simeon Rice was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the contention that he used a teammate to aid his leap to block the kick. Replays showed Rice jumped straight in the air, but the officials stuck to their call. Vanderjagt then easily made a 29-yarder to win the game.

Aaron Brooks was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this thread.

the refs messing up the steelers coin toss that one year was pretty funny.
but the play that stands out as the dumbest to me is in a 2004 game, week 15, miami and new england played on monday night. brady threw 4 INTs that game but the last one he threw was hilarious. he was getting sacked and right when he was about to hit the ground he just threw the ball straight up into the middle of the field and it landed in Brendan Ayanbadejo's arms and it allowed miami to drive down and score the go-ahead touchdown with like a minute to play.

Doesn't seem like a stupid/worst play ever to me. Was just very unforunate they didn't get in.
That picture right there is one of the most memorable in my mind, for better or worse. If I had to some up why football is a superior sport, I would simply use that picture to help explain.
Of course you probably hate me for saying that, but again, it was such an epic battle to end for the Titans. Wished they had won that Super Bowl.
The one to go with it from that Superbowl was Steve McNair with his head in his hands, sobbing, as confetti was falling all around him.

I know the play some of you are talking about. It is easily the greatest blooper in sports. A Minnesota Viking (Hall of Famer I think, but I know he was at least really good) picked up a fumble and must have become disorientated and began running the wrong way. He ran the entire length of the field in the wrong direction while the announcer was saying, "HE'S RUNNING THE WRONG WAY!!!" He then proceded to reach the endzone and spike the ball out of bounds resulting in a safety.

I don't know what being an idiot has to do with being a jerk or to do with the worst/stupidest plays ever.

Bob Griese did it once during the season. Must feel somewhat strange if you're the Guard on the play. I mean, you're not expecting it..
That picture was for McPhearson by the way, not Brooks.

to me its the worst play ever because we were a yard short of possibly winning the super bowl
It was less than a yard.

Haha, no worries.
There's many other plays to dislike Aaron Brooks for, so don't worry about that.

The 3 worst plays which I'm sure have been mentioned that I saw were as follows:
Wrong way Marshall of the Minnesota Vikings ran about 70 yards for a touchback in his own endzone. He was very luckey that when he spiked the ball it went out of bounds.
However, the absolute worst call I ever saw was the Giants in the last 40 secondes snapping the ball instead of taking a knee, they fumbled the ball and the Eagles picked it up and ran it back about 90 yards for the game winning TD.
The other worst call, I ever saw which came close to to the Giants/Eagles game was when the rookie HC of Detroit CHOSE to kickoff in overtime instead of receiving the ball even though the stats clearly shows a huge win percentage for whoever receives thge ball in overtime. Of course, the other team scored on Detroit on their possession to win the game.

The New Orleans Saints were playing the Miami Dolphins in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana two years ago. The Saints have the ball on their 25 yard line after a kick-off return. The ball is snapped and New Orleans quarterback Aaron Brooks drops back and looks down field. He looks left, he looks right, he feels pressure coming from his right and rolls left, pressure then comes from his left so he rolls backwards all the way to the 1 yard line where he is pushed into the end zone and sacked for a safety.
