View Full Version : Shoulda traded up for Olsen

the though just now came to us but Olsen got picked only 2 picks ahead of our 2nd rounder and we ended up taking a TE with our 2nd rounder. With the gap b/w Olsen and Miller being pretty substantial, I feel like we shoulda made a move into the late 1st to grab Olsen after the Panthers passed on him at 25. The pats showed they were willing to trade down and I bet the Chargers woulda willingly traded down, Craig Davis surely woulda been there at 33. Woulda been a great move, too bad we didnt make it.

Why do you think the gap was that significant? Most people had Miller ranked ahead of Olsen early in the process, and I was still tempted to rank Miller over him after the combine.

People blame Kyle Wright for Olsen's lack of production in college, but a huge part was Olsen's general lack of instincts for the position. He doesn't find the soft spot in zones very well and doesn't run great routes, something Miller excels in. Add in the fact that Miller is a slightly better blocker, and I see no reason he wasn't the better choice, especially considering that trading back for him landed us the pick which was used for McCown and Williams.

During one of the post-draft interviews on Raiders.com, Kiffin said he had Miller rated higher than Olsen. I honestly don't think the gap was that wide. People went crazy for Olsen just because of his 40 time at the Combine.

Given how things shook out (the 4th we flipped for McCown and Williams) Miller was the right choice.

Olsen has the better time but Miller has good hands, is a better blocker and came cheaper.

Thats 3:1 in my book for Miller.

Raiders had Miller not Olsen as the #1 TE on their board.

If Olsen was there and Miller they would have took Miller

Olsen can't block to save his life, Miller not a great blocker but good also has great hands so I dig the pick.

The only problem I had with the Miller pick was that we traded down so we could get McCown and Williams. We could have got Alan Branch.

alan branch is just a clone of what we have already in terdell sands. we planed all along to trade back to pick up an extra 4th. it work out prefect.

we should have stayed at where we were and gotten alan branch

The only guy we should have picked but didnt was Walter Thomas.Holland will probably be on the Practice Squad Walter could have made the team.

Olsen is a big WR, Miller is a TE. Miller will be the better pro, watch.

Walter would have been on the practice squad for probably at least two years. He's a great athlete, but he's played 6 games of football total.

I would've taken Miller over Olsen for us as well. We have already had plenty of TE's that can't block, we don't need another one.

Sure Olsen can stretch the field vertically, but he has very inconsistent hands. Miller, on the other hand, has some of the best hands in the draft.

When bringing up a young QB, a safety outlet is one of the most important things for his development. Miller is not the fastest, but he knows how to get open and he will hang onto the ball when it's thrown to him. If he can just sit there on 3rd and 5 and grab a 6 yard dump pass, I'm good.

A TE who can stretch the field vertically is a luxury. In developing Russell, we don't have the comfort of being able to take such a luxury.

I'd just like to add to NIP's point. Miller will have dramatically less trouble hauling in Russell's short range bullets than Olsen would have. This guy was hauling in Sam Keller's strong throws one handed.

I like both TE's. I've never watched Greg Olsen but I heard that he can't block to save his life. I was very excited when we drafted Miller, I figured we were either going to take Blalock or Kalil. Now I see we have the next great Raider TE.

Well if the Raiders had Miller rated ahead of Olsen then I defer to that and cant criticize the move. I could obviously see Miller being the better pro but Olsen clearly has more upside. Im happy with it regardless. Branch woulda been nice, Olsen woulda been nice, trading down and grabbing Miller and then using the extra pick to get McCown and BMW is very nice. Kalil woulda been nice too, when he slid I was hoping we'd pull a trade and get him.

Im not big on either TE. I still say we shouldve drafted Ben Patrcik. That guy gots talent and with the right coaching can be good.

Miller is far better equipped to make an immediate impact, and we needed an immediate upgrade more than we needed a project. Not that I would have complained considering we could have gotten Patrick in the 6th round.

I know...im good with the pick, but I doubt Russell starts this season as we got a Vet in McCown. He could have helped develop Russell as well as Patrcik. But i get that Miller will probably make a more immediate impact as he far more polished.
