No formal education is required. You'll get trained by the dealership.

You get a fixed pay plus a bonus for selling cars.

The rate of cars you need to sell to stay employed depends on the dealership.

They're one step above door-to-door salesmen but one step below insurance salesmen on the scale of most hated persons?

I don't like sales people in general. I don't need to be convinced to buy your crap. If I need it, i'll do the research and buy it without your input.

It's a step up from telemarketer, but you still may want to give the speech with a paper bag over your head to hide your shame.

I have a friend who used to sell Toyota/Scion. I recall that he was required to sell a certain number of cars per month just to stay employed. His salary was paid monthly and was based on the number of cars and additional products (warrantees, etc.) he sold the month before. There were significant incentives to exceed certain thresholds for cars sold.

Many I know get paid on straight commission, no fixed pay at all.

Usually the sales people are on straight commission with the sales manager on a salary + bonuses based the total sales for his group.

My friend works at a used car lot on the weekends and gets $10 an hour and sits in the office and plays PS2 all day. Hasn't sold a car yet, usually just tells people to come back on Monday. Hope that helps.

I'm just kind of laughing over that even being one of the choices for a career speech.

I mean, does anyone actually aspire to be a car salesman?

"Johnny, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

"a fireman!"

"and Timmy?"

"and astronaut!"

"and little Luigi?"

"I wanna be a car salesman!"
