Which athlete comes to mind when you think of this jersey number kind of like that. I saw this in the NFL section few weeks ago and thought would be interesting for all sports
0- Gilbert Arenas
2- Derek Jeter
3- Allen Iverson
4- Adam Vinatieri

7- Michael Vick
10- Brady Quinn

20- Brian Dawkins
21- Deion Sanders (even though he is retired)
23- Michael Jordan (see above)

Is this all time? Because I think of Ruth and Gehrig as #3 and #4. Might as well throw out Dimaggio and Mantle as #5 and #7. I also think of Elway with #7.

i agree with all that #4 is easily brett favre. everyone knows favre name. also i agree with the guy that said barry sanders > ed reed > dawkins.
Just off the top of my head, may add more later, but most of these are the guys that seem pretty indisputable as being the iconic figure of their number.

No love for Pele? 10 is probably the greatest number in soccer for any team, it is primarily given to the forward because originally you wore the number that corresponding with position as 1 starting with the Goalie etc.etc.

Walter Payton is an icon. David Ortiz is a great player but give me a break. I doubt many people that aren't baseball buffs will remember him 30-40 years from now.
Not to mention that baseball players aren't as well known by their numbers.
I'd throw out 51 for Dick Butkus. Or me.

I think baseball players are more well known by their numbers. Especially past ball players.

I agree with BF51...Walter Payton is a football icon and legend...everyone who knows remotely anything about football thinks of him when the #34 appears...while Ortiz is a very very good player right now, there is no way he can be considered more associated with the #34 than Walter Payton is...maybe 30 years from now if Ortiz has over 600 HRs, multiple MVPs, and leads the BoSox to another title or two, then maybe he can be considered...

also Barry Sanders> Ed Reed > Brian Dawkins for number 20.
I agree with Sanders over Dawkins but not Reed, Brian Dawkins has been the leader and symbol of the Eagles for a long time. Also Reed may not even be wearing #20 if it wasn't for Dawkins, who he has acknowledged modeling his game after.
