McKelvin is going in as our #2 CB (behind McGee)
The coaching staff is going to say that it's an "open competition" but I don't see anyone beating him out for that.

I think McKelvin will continue to return kicks. The reasoning for this is that even when McGee became a starting CB, he still returned kicks. I don't see them changing it up at all. Especially considering McKelvin had one of the best return averages in the NFL.

Pretty much this.
But still, you should've replied

The problem is kick returners get injured or at least banged up getting tackled all the time. You really don't want your starting CB's returning kicks unless you are desperate.

SuperMcGee
07-19-2009, 12:42 PM
Well, we usually are pretty desperate to begin with. We have a perenially bad offense, we need as much of a field position advantage as we can get. With the emphasis this team places on special teams, McKelvin's official position may as well be CB/KR.
Plus it's what the fans want to see. Appease!

I don't remember McGee or Parrish every getting hurt on KR or PR.

Players get banged up in the NFL all the time. The more you ask of them the more likely they are to suffer injuries which may still allow them to play but at a very reduced performance level. Most teams in the NFL prefer non starters to play on the kick return teams for this very reason. Buffalo hasn't played at a playoff level for years and using your starting CB's as kick returners is a good way of assuring that you never reach the playoffs.

Well that is why we always have great ST, we put the best PR and KR out there and it pays off. All you are asking is McLovin to return the ball like 4 times a game (and I don't remember him getting light up yet), not like he is out on the field for 80% of the game. Also we have very good depth at CB so say he does get hurt and is out a week or 2 so what we have depth. I'll take the risk of him getting hurt to have a top 5 KR do that job.

SuperMcGee
07-20-2009, 06:02 PM
You can't go off of the precedent that "McGee was never seriously hurt" or that "McKelvin never got lit up" in his year of return duties. The risk is always there.

And Parrish does get hurt. We use him pretty much solely on PR. I'm probably bigger than Roscoe, but still, you can't say he doesnt get hurt.

We have a lot of good nickel options, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with Corner or Florence lining up outside should someone get hurt (a concern we already have with McGee).

With all that in mind, I am still all for McKelvin bringing back kicks.

redbills
07-20-2009, 06:09 PM
The risk is there when he plays CB too. You can get hurt anytime anywhere. Saying "O he might get hurt doing returns" well he might get hurt going for a jump ball. Yea more on the field the more chances but you don't take him off becuase "he might get hurt"

Sadly he should've been our best depth linebacker. Even more sad is that was the case while Keith Ellison is our starter.

I hear John McCargo looks faster and more slim, but has he lost power?

Levitre was there, he got beat pretty badly a few times that I saw him, but they didn't do a lot of physical stuff since it was the first day in pads. I wasn't impressed though. I didn't notice Hangartner. I suppose McCargo slimmed down a bit but it was tough to tell how strong he was because they didn't really go all out. Drayton Florence looked pretty good from what I saw. He didn't make any huge plays that I saw, but it wasn't like they were passing all over him.

By the way, Ryan Fitzpatrick is horrific. JP Losman was infinitely better in camp last year than Fitzpatrick looked. I'll keep an eye out for stuff since I think I'll go on Friday morning.

SuperMcGee
07-29-2009, 12:56 AM
I'd definitely say to keep the eye on the corners - McKelvin, Corner, Ellis "The Sex" Lankster, and Florence. Youboty and Harris, too, I suppose. Anything regarding matching up against our top two wideouts is of interest.

Ugh, Fitzpatrick. Hamdan for backup!

SuperMcGee
07-29-2009, 10:07 AM
Hehe.... Wood. That's one more down.

just thinking - if Fitzpatrick continues to be atrocious, there's still a chance at cutting him and scooping up Drew Willy, should the Ravens be so foolish. Ultimate sex!
That's what I think about, alright. Never let it go.

Peter King liked Fitzpatrick play last night. We won't cut him, this was the QB we wanted in FA and played okay in CIN last year. Remember this is his 1st year with the O, and WR's. Give him some time.

Seriously tho.....Maybin is a long term project anyway, its not like we were banking on him starting. He was always going to be a 3rd down guy with a straightforward and easy job : rush the passer. trents 1st int was iffy... Looked like a late pass, but u could also make a point for pass interference... but it wasnt called, so no penalty can be used as an excuse.

im actually surprised Lynch ended the game with positive yards.. Safe to say he was pretty much hit in the backfield every play

trents fumble.. he had PLENTY of time 5-6 seconds, and the line gave him ample protection. He sat in the pocket as if he couldnt find anyone open. The packers blitzed 2 lbs, so i doubt everyone was covered.

Basically the entire team looked inept. We couldnt stop them on defense. Our offensive line was pushed around the entire night. Trent looked scared (like when we played cleveland last year) ZERO pass rush. Dline was getting pushed arund in the run game.

even though its the preseason, ud like to see some progress, and some plays being made. Our first team offense this preseason has had 9 possessions and 4 turnovers.. o tds and 1 FG

unacceptable

if play like this goes onto into the regular season.. We will have a new coach mid-season.

Head Coach Bobby April.... it's got a nice ring to it.

But anyway, the offense was pretty brutal. Edwards showed a lot of what you don't want to see, besides what he did with his legs. Both of those were some wide open fields that he was able to walk into, though.

What are the thoughts on Stupar? We let him play a lot of the game and of course he puts up stats, but there's no feeling that he's challenging anybody. I like what I've seen from him all preseason, and at such a below average position for us he's somebody that I want to see even more of.

I have been calling for April to get a shot for a while.

As for Stupar, I would like to see him get a shot, yeah. How has Shawn Nelson looked tho? Has he played at all?

SuperMcGee
08-24-2009, 02:34 PM
Yeah, Nelson has played some. Just a few short catches and a nice TD on a fade, from what I remember. Schou and Fine are still the only ones playing with starters, though.

Rob S
08-24-2009, 02:39 PM
See, I have the highest hopes for Nelson. We have a glut of TE who are kind if the same player (altho I admittedly dont know enough about Stupar). I feel like Nelson can actually provide the receiving threat we desperately need.

SuperMcGee
08-24-2009, 03:04 PM
Oh, absolutely. Nelson needs to be the guy out of this group. Schouman as the #1 still confuses me, as much as I have randomly been on his nuts the past two years. Fine and Stupar probably are never going to be above average. I just hope Nelson's learning curve isn't too long and he can force his way into being that guy. He received praise for his hands and routes in the earlier offseason activities. It's not like we have a great blocker ahead of him, anyway. He should be able to move up this depth chart, and I will be so happy when he can be that TE that we wanted.
Otherwise, Gronkowski asap!

Rob S
08-24-2009, 06:07 PM
Yeah, I honestly wouldnt be mad if we just threw Nelson into the fire at this point because what we have stinks imo. The caveat on that would be him not being a total liability blocking wise. This is why I wish I could see all the preseason games.

The Duke has had his troubles. Not a good run blocker, and he still has way too much trouble with snaps. A lot of bad exchanges from the guy. He can be an alright blocker on kick returns, but he's someone I'm glad to have gone from our starting O-line. Should definitely be a depth guy if he's with the Cowboys now (I have no idea if he is, last I heard was Packers), or any team really, if he can make it.

Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson Jr. summoned head coach Dick Jauron, along with general manager Russ Brandon and two assistant coaches, for a conference at his Detroit home on Saturday after a tumultuous preseason that resulted in the firing of offensive coordinator Turk Schonert, according to team sources.

Wilson conducted a give-and-take session on the team's direction after the Bills' offense sputtered during a 1-4 preseason, sources said. In addition to Jauron and Brandon, Wilson also met with the Bills' new play-caller, quarterback coach Alex Van Pelt, and Eric Studesville, running back coach and running game coordinator.

Substantive details of the confab are unknown but Wilson always has been a hands-on owner.

"I will neither confirm nor deny that there was a meeting," said Scott Berchtold, the Bills Vice President of Communications.

Both Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen said that they have a meeting....

I don't think you can make an assumption like that even the day before the draft, let alone before the season starts. I also disagree on the thought of it, for now. We might look for upgrades to Butler and Hangartner, but I think Butler can be good enough and it would have to be great value for an interior linemen.

IDK about that

Bell, Levitre, Wood future at LT, LG and C
Hang could be a back-up at G/C or if he plays well he could stay at C.
Butler could move back to RG if Wood moves over to C. Would be a good G/T back-up as well.

I look at the line to look like this next year

Bell, Levitre, Wood, Butler, Draft pick/FA

Well if you don't trust Demetrius Bell to be our LT of the future, which is in no way an unwarranted feeling, then the thought of two bookend linemen is a real possibility. But I also have to believe the possibility of what Iamcanadian said regarding our pick. Or maybe we go in a different direction altogether. Despite this being a draft board, it's all something that I'm not going to think about too much right now. Of course, I do agree that the line and QB are the most likely candidates for a fixin.

**** Leodis McKelvin
He is so beyond stupid, I don't even know what to phrase what he is.

#1. The only legitimate reason I can think of (and I didn't realize this thought until after the game) for even returning the kick, when the Bills have a 5-point lead and the onsides kick unit is on the field, is that he wanted to get the clock to run to the 2-minute mark. Thereby helping the Bills run out the clock.

I doubt he's that smart but maybe April told him this. Who knows.

#2. You know, you know, YOU KNOW that the Patriots are going to try and create a turnover, specifically a fumble. Dumbass, you know this and still you fumble the ball.

This is why intelligence matters just as much as any other important attribute you look for in a player. Some guys are faster and some guys are bigger, but all these guys can run, jump, catch, tackle, etcetera. Intelligence is what engineers the good plays and prevents the bad plays.

The Buffalo Bills continually find ways to break their hearts and even moreso the hearts of their loyal fans. Idiots.

I loved the progress that Edwards showed in his 3rd season. He looks really solid which is a huge plus for us. The OL played over their heads but at least showed some promise. I think we showed that we can win some games this season which I didn't think possible before this game.
Leodis had a bad play, so what, it happens, get over it. There were far more pluses in the game than minuses.

Trent needs to take shots down field with Evans and T.O. He didn't take a shot all game.

Plus from the game, we ran screens! What?!?!?! Not only did we run 1 we ran like 3 or 4! I almost **** my pants when we ran them. A Bills O running screens is like me scoring with hot chicks, it just doesn't happen. : )

O-Line looked good, I thought Bell and Andy would get killed by the Pats*. Bell have a few times he looked like a guy that never started but better than what I thought he'd do. He can run on sweep plays and outside runs. Andy, man he can get out and run. He didn't get blow back at all, which is a huge plus. Hang, played very well againt VW. Wood, looked great hell Butler at RT looked soild as I never say anything like 'Damn it Brad'.
O-Line looks very good and I think with a up-grade at C/RG (Hang.) or RT (Butler) will make this O-Line very very good
LT-Bell, LG-Levitre, C-Wood, RG-Butler/Draft/FA, RT-Butler/Draft/FA
or
LT-Bell, LG-Levitre, C-Hangartner, RG-Wood, RT-Butler/Draft/FA

We need a LB that can make big time plays. Ellison made a nice 4 & 1 stop but then got beat for 2 TD's.

Maybin needs to get better jump. After reading all the hype about his 1st step I wasn't impressed at all as he was not getting good jumps at all. Also he just ran past Brady many times as the OT was just all over him.

Stroud must have lost a step because I only remember him making 1 play. K.Williams made more plays. I hope Stroud will go back to the way he played his 1st 2 games here because after those 2 games he hasn't done much. Still a good player but.

Why did we just sit back in cover 2 the last 2 drives????? Why??? If you don't want to blitz why not mix the play calling up, cover 1, cover 3 etc? Here is what I'd do. Put in 3 DL (Schobel, Williams/Stroud & Denney) 2 LB (Maybin & Mitchell) then 6 DB. With this set you can blitz the LBers or then go to a 4 man front with Maybin at DE or just drop 8 back. I hate it when you sit back and bring 4. IMO you blitz or you drop more than 7 back. I would have played the D a lot diff. than the way we did. I would have tried to blitz and if Brady is getting it off fast I'd drop the 8. with man and zone mix.

There's more to it than a bad loss in which we showed promise. I don't want this to sound the wrong way, but it's a lot simpler to say things like that when you're not a full-on Bills fan.
Edwards did look fine, though.

Not likely to happen, if you ask me. Especially with Jackson in a larger role, now. Lankster would have to have proved to be a great return man for it to happen.

Roscoe Parrish is who i want returning kicks...

Freddy can do it also... They need to give Stevie an Opp. in practice to return kicks

I think McGee is done with that, as good as he was. Parrish is a fantastic punt returner, but it's a different game with kicks. He's mostly on the team to be a returner, but he's never been on for kicks.
The great return men are still here, it's just that McKelvin was one of them, and our top backup for the duty is currently taking enough pounding as the starting RB.

I dont think Mckelvin will be or should be pulled at KR.

Roscoe is a PR, KR is a different ballgame. I like that McGee gets the rest, and I think McKelvin is clearly out next best option at KR. If he makes another mistake like that, fine, pull him. However, I have to think he is going to learn from this debacle.

The Bills OL has come together fairly well so far. Levitre and Bell are the weak points and losing Butler isn't good. I think Scott will be fine in the role though. Just makes us even thinner up front.

Hoping injuries don't kill us like they have in past years. Already lost Poz, Butler, Schouman for long periods of time or the season. Can't afford much more loss of players as depth is an issue with this team.

A victory this week against the Saints will come in the injury department, not the scoreboard. I hope we can keep our guys playing through the year.

How do you guys think Nelson will do now that he looks to be the starter with Schouman gone and Fine banged up? I really liked Nelson coming out and thought you guys got a tremendous steal when you scooped him up in the 5th (I think). Looked solid on that Monday Night, but do you guys see him as a big factor this year?

Yea it would have been nice to groom him a bit more but when you trade your LT then cut a T you have no choice but to put him out there and see what he does. The plus side he gets game exp. down side you will have games like against the Pats* (it was his 1st start also).

I believe he has the ability but playing behind our OL especially with a weak LT, he is never going to reach his peak. You cannot win in the NFL without a solid LT.
