I actually drive the Mercury version however (same exterior, but has a V8 engine, has a V8, has a leather interior, and includes some other perks. Mountaineer is basically the luxury version of the explorer)

Its old, but its never let me down and I love it, as do my friends.

Edit- i realized i have 4 door version.... Im gonna take a pic tommorow. its a white 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

Yeah, 2nd that.

I was actually about to take the course that counts for the DMV driving test to get licensed before I broke my wrist.

I should be getting my license this summer, and buying my own next year. My brother has a Kawasaki and my Dad has an 80s BMW, and a 2001 Harley.

Probably am gonna drive my brothers motorcycle a lot this summer (with him driving the old BMW)

Sadly, no GT, but the next car I get I'll make sure is fast as hell. With the lifespan of most Ford cars, putting tons of stuff onto my car now that I have it seems like a wasted investment.

I just bought my wife a brand new 2007 Nissan Versa. $13000 in cash so I don't have to worry about payments. Not going to college and using your college fund for other things is awesome.

$5 that someone will post a picture of their bike and/or the city bus. I am looking ahead to the future because the car above will be mine once I win the lottery tonight. Oh, my car is a 2000 Ford Expedition. It used to be my mom's but she kept complaining until my dad gave in and got her a new one. I couldnt let it go to waste especially since it only had 30,000 miles on it at the time. Its a big step up from the Xterra that I had before.

Chrysler Eagle Vision!

One of the toughest cars around. The build of it makes it like that. The way the front of the cars dips down prevents serious damage if you hit something. Ive hit someone once when I was 16, and anoother time I got hit. MY car looks perfect in the front, with a couple scuffs here and there. I love the car. Oh ya, and the other thing, my car is PURPLE! not black. Im proud to be driving that!

1991 Volvo 740 Turbo. It's in very good condition for its age, and considering it has 366 000 kilometres on it (227 422 miles). It has a sunroof, leather interior, and I installed a CD player. I'm looking at a Toyota Yaris or a Kia Rio in September.

Ford Fusion is the premiere economy car at the moment and it gets like 31 MPG. and its well under $20,000

If your talking a soccer mom car, the best imo is the Mercury Mariner Hybrid. ~35 MPG and its a big SUV with good performance. Gas mileage goes up a lot if your not on the highway as well (it uses zero gas if your going under 25 MPH). and its not that expensive

I do have a 1979 Z28 Camaro that is technically my car, but i have to do some work on it, and i have to run premium, so i don't drive it very often. Plus it's at home, and i'm at school.

The irony is golden.

Talking trash about someone's car when you don't even have your own vehicle. You said you don't even have your license yet. What are you, 14?

Inferior, POS? Funny. I've had it for a few years now and am yet to run into any kind of problem whatsoever. As long as it gets me through the rest of college and a few years after, I'll be more than satisfied.

This kind of response is so typical from your standard 9th-10th grade 'tough guy' who thinks he'll own a supercharged Corvette while he's still in high school working his McJob. Maybe you can get mommy and daddy to fork out some money.

My first car was a '93 ford taurus. My mom gave it to me when she got a new car.

By the time it had 100k miles on it, it was on it's third transmission [two of which covered by warranty's] and then at 112k miles cracked the head gasket.

I received $300 from the junk yard [who even came and picked it up].

I then turned around and bought a 2000 Kia Sportage 4x4 5 speed with 64k miles on it for 3k [tax and title included].

I'll take my Kia over GRF's life.

They need smaller cars in the UK, because their streets are as wide as a desk. We Americans like bigger cars.

if you want a Muscle Car to restore... (i'm assuming you mean pre 1980s, because otherwise they aren't muscle cars) you can't go wrong with a Camaro, or even a Mustang. My personal favorties are the 1970 Dodge Challenger, and the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, but those can be pricey, and it's tough to find parts for Mopar cars, at least relatively inexpensive parts.

Being that you are in Southern California, rust wouldn't be a huge issue, so i would just look for something with a solid body... it all depends on how much work you're willing to do, and how much money you have to put into it.

I'm not really sure what the last part of your quote is referring to however... Japanese cars are vastly more reliable, and comparably inexpensive... plus the gas mileage is unmatched.

However, Japanese car companies don't put a lot of stock into the appearance, or the luxury of their cars. They also don't have the type of raw (unmodified) power that American cars do.

I'm not really sure what the last part of your quote is referring to however... Japanese cars are vastly more reliable, and comparably inexpensive... plus the gas mileage is unmatched.

However, Japanese car companies don't put a lot of stock into the appearance, or the luxury of their cars. They also don't have the type of raw (unmodified) power that American cars do.that pretty much elaborated on what i was going for, but you made it more cohesive and gave more info.

as for muscle cars i might go for a 71' mach1 mustang, or an early corvette.

well if you're going to go with a Corvette, make sure that either it's not a fiberglass body, or that you won't need to do any body work. The fiberglass bodied corvettes are a pain to repair by hand, and costly to get done by a professional if you can find one who will do it.

haha, i bet my car is more boring... i drive a 2000 tan Chevy Malibu... that's much worse.

I do have a 1979 Z28 Camaro that is technically my car, but i have to do some work on it, and i have to run premium, so i don't drive it very often. Plus it's at home, and i'm at school.

I still think the premium gas is a myth. I ran 87 in my 79 trans am all last summer and it's fine.

I was talking to a ford engineer the other day. I actually used to work with him awhile back...he was doing some engineering training while at college. Last year I was out to eat with him...he had been at Ford for about 6 months by this time....he said that out of the big US company's the only one to earn money in 2005/2006 was Chrysler and that Ford/GM were in a world of hurt if they didn't make some strides. I found that interesting.

Depends. High compression motors need the premium but if the motor is stock it's a waste to run premium.

In my '69 I run 87 with no problems.

In our race cars we ran 115 octane before swapping to methanol lol

no actually... when i was using 87, I had run-on in my engine... (Don't know how else to describe it, nor do i know the term for it. But basically after i turned the ignition off, the engine would continue to run for a little bit) with premium, it doesn't do it.

But it's not stock, it has a number of performance engine parts and such, don't remember what was done to it.

premium octane gas (90-91) means nothing cleaner about it. all the octane means is that it take a high compression to detonate the fuel. what you want is the fuel to be ignited by the spark plug not compressed so much it just "detonates". you can use premium fuel in regular cars.... it doesnt do a damn thing but cost you more money. (not cleaner, not special) but if you put regualar unleaded gas with an octane of 87 into a turbo or high performance engine it would just be compressed and blow up resulting in missed fires and gunking up you engine because the exhaust valves won't be open at the time of the gas being consumed.

This post is so far from the truth it's funny. Higher octane does two things. The higher the octane the better combustion from you engine...thus why you see it on the race tracks...the second thing it does is more economy...since it has a higher combustion rate it takes less to fire...which gives you better fuel economy. Then you post gets even worse...when you talk about turbo engines blowing up because they aren't using premium....please you talking out of your rear.

I would not consider that old junk. I drove a 2003 Corolla until earlier this year when I bought a 2010 Accord. I'd probably still be driving that Corolla but I needed something bigger.

Lol, and when my dad got it when it was 25k it wasn't cheap? The thing is in perfect shape and right now it has 75k miles on it. That's pretty damn good for almost an 11 year old car.

I'll race you in my v8, turbo charged mustang. Then we'll see what's so cheap about it. I'm sure my mustang could destroy your ****** 2.0L 4 cylinder.

Hey I was curious if any one has changed cars with in the last 6 months or a year?Thought maybe this might be a fun thread to bring back from the dead. Also was curious how many of you drivers out there now how drive or prefer to drive a Manual Transmission 5 speed or six speed or what ever?I'm in the market for a new hopefully this spring after I've started my new job and saved up some cash etc so I can afford monthly payment.I tell you what it is so hard to find cars under 5,000 price tag that don't have 150K miles on them or tuned out to grab and beat hell.I'm trying to find a descent mid size sedan for commute to work.I think I'll be looking at the Dodge Neon if I can find one with a five speed.

Any how which do you guys prefer Stick or Auto?

Here is my hunk of junk I am driving that gets 14 mpg, a 1987 Toyota 4runner.

Been on the 250 for 2 and a half years now, we have a law over here that you have to have your restricted(250cc) license for a year before you can get an unrestricted license and I've been so satisfied with the 250 that I basically haven't bothered sitting the other test.

Basically the 250 can do up to 110mph or so but you really don't want to be using it if you are going to be doing 75mph+ regularly as the fuel usage starts to get expensive.

Bikes over here are way more expensive(like everything) but the maintenance hasn't been much, I've spent 1k in 2 and a half years on maintenance, if you are going to thrash the hell out of it then you will spend more because you will need to replace the tyres more often but you should get a good 10,000km out of each set without any hassles.

Bike is really practical for city riding for the commute to work, especially a 250, I get about 200 miles on $15 worth of petrol(again fuel is another thing that costs more here...) so it is stupid economical, bigger bike is not as good for commutes but more efficient on highways.

I seriously recommend a bike as long as you aren't an idiot and especially if you have a mate or two that has one as it's a fun activity to do on weekends.

The cost isn't that bad, you can go overboard on gear but really a good set of gloves, helmet and jacket is all you need, like owning a car you can fit it out if you want but you don't have to. I know my car cost a hell of a lot more to run, insure and maintain, not to mention costing a lot more to buy initially.

I would also recommend starting out on nothing bigger than a 600cc if you go for a sports bike, I've found the 250 was exceptional to learn on as it is really forgiving for mistakes you make and you will make some when starting out, better to get a little scare than to be on your ass!

Something worth doing if you have money or if you have a city commute that you want to save petrol and time doing, also a really good way to wake up in the morning if you aren't a morning person, sometimes I'll ride just because I don't feel like waking up :)

Feel free to ask me any questions mate and I'll do my best to help you out :)

yeah my friends who ride all suggest just starting with a 600 cause they say you grow outta the 250 really quickly. but i'm a complete noob and don't have much to spend anyways so i'll probably end up with a 250. tbh, i don't know how realistic this is considering i don't even know how to ride a bike (yeah, pathetic. i know.) but i just really want a cbr.

hahah i know this. my plan of action is that i will learn how to ride a damn bike this summer at the age of twenty and go from there.

Riding a motorbike is actually probably easier than a push bike because the bike creates the inertia and you are basically locked in on it. If you haven't ridden anything I'd definitely try and at least find a 250 to start out on and see how you go.

Basically on a 250 if you give it too much juice you just give yourself a scare, a 600 sports bike will be out from under you in no time. Certainly should start out in a nice big empty car park instead of on the road though!

Only real reason I started with the 250 was because of the law over here and because my commute that took 15 minutes on a bike took more like 30 in a car and an hour and a half on a bus and I really value my sleep so I wanted to be riding asap not wait a year to get the big boy license!

If you do go 250 I highly recommend the 250r Ninja 2008 onward model, it is an excellent learning bike that has done me no wrong and because they are pretty common parts are cheap if anything goes wrong. They have enough power to be a lot of fun and are really light which makes throwing them around on a track heaps of fun if you are so inclined but at the same time aren't so powerful as to present any difficulties riding them.

As posted, hoping to get one of the Orange and Silver CBR 1000s as the next set of wheels, mostly about getting the money because like everything in Australia it is stupid expensive over here. They are about $17k over here but still awesome!

Also... be careful buying second hand bikes, you want to make sure it hasn't been thrashed or dropped and especially check the tyres, if it has done roughly 7500 miles then it is probably due for a tyre change so see how the tyres look as it will cost a fair bit to replace them. Bikes are something I'd recommend spending the bit extra to get new just for the peace of mind.

I skipped a 250, and started with a GSXR-600 (its actually a few pages back in this thread)

Got a mate with one of them, nice fun to ride.

Well i've heard differently on the scions motors they aren't like the old Toyota motors.I would go with a corolla if you want a good Toyota or heck find a nice Neon that is in the mid 2000's for cheap.I hear you on the long lasting part though.I'm trying to sell my 4runner so I can commute to work and still have a nice ride for good/descent gas mpg. We should bump more GRF topics. =p

Still have this car, still no major problems with it but a lot of little things are starting to go (little as in alternator, front electrical harness for the headlights and fuel lines were recently replaced). Planning on buying a new Kia Sportage this year or next.

Funny story:

Back in high school I was with my two friends, and we were with one of the friend's dad and sister. So we're out doing something, and one of them randomly goes, "Hey look! A Scion! *points to box shaped Scion!" I then put my foot in my mouth, not knowing they were getting excited over this car for a reason, and say, "Those are the ugliest cars I've ever seen." They all simultaneously look at me shocked, and I feel like I just said a Jesus joke in Bethlehem.

Turns out the dad just bought one of those cars, pimped it out with an awesome sound system, and now they all love it. It was the first time I met my buddy's dad too, so at least I made an impression.

But seriously, I later rode around in it with them, and those things are freaking amazing on the inside. Been a convert ever since.

It disgusts me how cheap cars(and bikes for that matter) are in the USA compared to Australia, just disgusting. Guy who bought a Civic for 18,000 and I looked at those things and the most basic model starts at 31k over here, over 40k for the models you'd actually want to drive.

And we've had our dollar being worth more than the US dollar for most of this year.

Sad panda.

jesus whats minimum wage in aussie land 20 an hour?!

Depends on your age but for a 20 year old it's not far off that.

**** is just really expensive over here.

i believe your rent is also fairly ludicrous, at least in/near sydney/melbourne. i was hearing something like $1k/week for things that were still relatively far away from city center.

In Perth if you want to be within 15 minutes of the city you are looking at ~250 per week for each bedroom. So if you want a 3 bedroom place it will be about 750 and that is basically the bare minimum, so a shithole. If you want anything decent you should expect to pay $350+ per week and don't even bother trying to buy, if you want anything decent that isn't half an hour from the city you are looking at about $700k.

Are banana's still really ******* expensive?

They have actually come down a bit lately, down to about $9 per kg, they are expected to fall in the next couple of months though, boom season or something!

But yeah... **** be expensive. You think the above sounds bad, you should see PC, PS3, etc games and consoles! Put it this way, I bought a copy of NCAA 2012 and they hit me with an extra $25 worth of postage/taxes and it was still $35 cheaper than it would have been if it was available on a shelf here!

Looked it up because I was curious... $15.51 per hour is minimum wage, note that we don't have any kind of gratuities or tipping on industries that will earn anything like that. I was getting $24 an hour to work in a bar 4 years ago!

I guess Aussieland is a good place to be if you're a grown adult and living with your parents while working an average job. If you can save your money and then go to US you can open something up and be someone.

$9 for a kilo of bananas? That is outrageous. In the states they are the equivalent to about $1.50 per KG.

For a 24 year old, that is not bad. And besides, down here i could get a 10 acre property with a beautiful house for half of what it would take for a crappy home elsewhere.

$48,000 could get you a nice home here in GA. **** paying mortgage for 30 years.

Yeah, not really. When I was in high school, I was living large making $8 an hour. Now that I'm actually an adult, the $30 an hour I make is gone almost before it hits my bank account.

Nope, just me living out here. To be fair though, my apartment village has it's own sports bar, movie theater, 5 gyms, 4 salt water pools, market, Starbucks, juice it up, etc...

Plus they charge me for the stupid events they hold in the community that I never go to.

Southern California for ya :/

Yep... or the alternative is to live a long way from the city and work on the mines where the average salary is comfortably over 100k. Got a mate from England who has come over and starts next week on a job paying 135k a year and he is the definition of unskilled.

$9 for a kilo of bananas? That is outrageous. In the states they are the equivalent to about $1.50 per KG.

They are normally not a great deal more than that, but Queensland is the major banana producer and basically a whole season of crops got taken down by the floods there last year.

Is that a weekly or monthly? What the hell is your job if that is weekly, I need me some of that occupation!

That said, it is kind of disgusting that Perth costs as much, if not more, than the freaking OC...

wogitalia
10-13-2011, 09:42 PM
The problem is how much those who work on the mines make. When genuinely unskilled labour makes 100k a year landlords can charge whatever the hell they want and not have any issues. All underwritten by the fact that buying a property is so unaffordable itself.

There also really isn't any other options, it's not like Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane are any cheaper and no on chooses to move to Adelaide or Tasmania unless they are getting paid buckets(Adelaide) or retiring(Tasmania).

Oh and don't get me started on the price of alcohol over here, it may be the only thing that can consistently make our rent look cheap. IE a Pint of crap beer is $10, a carton of Corona is $50(on sale). Grey Goose is like $65 a bottle. Not even kidding you slightly...
