Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams tested positive for marijuana in April and will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement to the NFL until September, sources said.

Williams was suspended last year for violation of the substance abuse policy and was eligible to be reinstated this month, but the league's medical advisors that oversee Williams' personal rehabilitation program recently notified commissioner Roger Goodell of the positive test, sources said.

The doctors also recommended that Williams not be allowed to apply for reinstatement until September, sources said. The commissioner usually adheres to the advice of the medical advisors under the substance abuse policy.

"Falling off the wagon is part of rehab," a source said. "Based on the medical evidence in Ricky's case, the doctors say it's too early to come back. He had the positive test last month. Remember, he's been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder -- that's a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction."

League spokesman Greg Aiello said the NFL would have no comment, as did Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene.

David Cornwell, an attorney who has represented Williams during his substance abuse cases, said he would honor the confidentiality policies in effect with another no comment.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

To each his own. I have no problem with him self-medicating. He obviously knows that if he does, he won't be allowed to play in the NFL.

Ricky has made a lot of money in the NFL, but not so much that he could afford to throw it away. I really don't see the point in smoking or taking drugs when you're in the league. Wait until you're out, like Nate Newton!

lol. He seems like a really nice guy, but idk what his deal is. He should just quit pot for like 3 years, make like 5 million bucks, and then retire and smoke pot all day long

I'm thinking the Social Anxiety Disorder is playing a much larger role in this than anyone realizes. No competent person, no matter how much they liked being high, would mess up this often.

He has millions of dollars just waiting for him, yet he can't put the pipe down? My God, it's pot, not crack.

^ Yeah, but there is a such thing called being a WEED HEAD, and that's the category Ricky Williams falls into.

The idea that it is illegal to smoke pot is ridiculous. Also not being able to smoke weed and play football is just stupid. Korean Robinson can be a raging alcoholic but he can come back to play but ricky just likes sitting back and toking and he cant.... Stupid

It sucks, apparently he really doesnt like playing football. The dude should just take any money he has made buy himself a nice house out in the country buy a little hydro kit and make his home grown as a hobby. Unless he really F'ed up his finances, the dude never has to really work a day in his life and can just sit back and smoke an almost unlimited amount of weed. If thats not successful i dont know what is.

Unless you have had mental issues, don't judge those that have. I would bet that you are completely correct. I don't know what it is like to be scared of people, but I can imagine that weed makes it much, much more bearable.

To each his own, if he really wants to get back into the NFL, the choosing to smoke weed and fail this drug test was dumb, however we act like money is the sole motivation for people. If smoking weed makes this guy happy, and if he doesnt really like playing football as he has said in the past, he might be better off just chilling on the football for now.

WTF? Who's judging? I never said he's a bad guy, I simply stated that his social anxiety disorder is most likely the culprit, rather than sheer stupidity.

Yes, but theres got to be other ways to deal with his problem besides smoking pot.

Alcoholism, prescription drugs(which I am sure he has tried, since he got help for it at one time or another), mushrooms, acid, prescription pain pills. Or he could just deal with it. He has already said that football isn't important to him. So who are you to judge him?

Pot isnt all that expensive, it would take some effort for him to smoke himself into welfare...

Exactly. Compared to other drugs, weed is dirt cheap.

Consider that an eighth of good weed will cost you $40-60 ($ 80 being the absolute most, and the only time I've ever heard of an $80 eighth is the BOMB from the medical marijuana clinics). Compare that to an eighth of good coke, which will cost you at least $120.

Also, there's the fact that a coke high will last you twenty to forty minutes, and then your body is going to be fiending for more and more. Whereas, with some good weed, you can smoke a few bowls or a blunt and be high for hours.

Just let the guy smoke he ain't tryin' to hurt anybody. Let's do a simple little analysis here. He was a beast in the NFL on weed and then he stopped smoking and went to the CFL, go figure. It's too bad it's come to this. Regardless of whose fault it is for coming this far, this guy was a BEAST.

Since I started watching football closely about 4 or 5 years ago (been watching in general for a lot longer) he was easily one of the most impressive I've seen.

Ricky, dude come on now. You know the rules and if you want to play again just don't smoke anymore man. If you have these "social anxiety" problems get some help man. But if you keep smoking you're going to get caught.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to do but if you want to play again, just stop smoking.

Why feel sorry for him? He is living life the way He wants to, not the way others expect him to. He has said football isn't his life. Let him do what he wants and get off his back about it. He enjoys weed more than football, that is his choice. It really doesn't matter.
