LOL@The missed open field push by Butler.

Yup big WTF, Butler is so pathetic the ref was like who gives an F, lol. BTW WTF does anyone watch Mike+Mike? Before the tournament the show's producers mom went on air said that the championship would be Butler vs Uconn, and UCONN will win 52-39. When I heard that score I thought it was ridiculous but WTF. If that ends up being the score holy crap that lady needs to be studied.

Congrats on the win UCONN!! Butler shoots 18% from the field, scores 2 points in the paint which required them to first get away with the push. Goodness gracious this game was horrific. UCONN's 34% from the field in any other game would not be good at all.

UConn deserves the game. They really survived more than anything. I think both teams played excellent defense, but both teams missed mindbogglingly easy shots. Howard has been a ghost most of the tournament in terms of points, save his free throw shooting. Mack just had an off-night and no one was scoring for Butler.

I feel bad for Butler because they played so poorly and for UConn when people start this crap about "well, it took a historically bad game for you to beat Butler."

I thought UConn deserved to win, but wow... that was bad. The officiating in championship games (every sport) is awful too. Awful for both teams.

I'm not trying to knock what UConn did... but that game is actually a game if Mack and Howard don't brick layups. Howard was a ghost for most of the game.

I'm not saying UConn wasn't the better team, but it's not too bad to play with a team for about 2/3s of the game in spite of having easily the worst game of your season.

Matt Howard had better get a real degree though. He has zero future in basketball as a player.

Howard's a much better version of Brian Scalabrine. He had a terrible game, but so did basically everyone on the court. Funny that the women will score more points than the men.

Really disappointing that Butler didn't come out better. They just couldn't get anything to drop and they hit the panic button with 12 minutes left when they got down by 7.

He had a terrible game, but so did basically everyone on the court.

He scored 17 against VCU but 11 of those were from the free throw line. 6 points from the field for a game is beyond bad. He made up for it by grabbing some boards, but two games in a row he couldn't score from the field.

He's a deep bench warmer at best, which means he will be out of the league in a few years.

NC State has hired Mike Gottfried. I just want to know what he was in prison for? (/bad joke)

All in all, I guess it was a good hire considering this isn't a premiere job.

No offense but 50% of Howards points in the tourny came from flailing his arms and getting to the free throw line. In the NBA they don't give you that call unless your a star. He definitely has a great motor and is a decent shooter but in the NBA he's just too small to be effective down low. IMO he's better suited as a decent player in the Europe game.

Connecticut received 30 of 31 first-place votes in the final ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, released a day after the Huskies defeated Butler to win their third NCAA championship under coach Jim Calhoun.

Ohio State, which was knocked out by eventual regional champion Kentucky in the Sweet 16, received the lone remaining first-place vote.

The 31 Division I coaches voting in the poll are not obligated to vote for the NCAA tournament champion as No. 1 on the final ballot of the season. In a USA Today online report Tuesday, Northern Arizona coach Mike Adras told the newspaper he gave his No. 1 vote to the Buckeyes.

Adras said he also put Kansas No. 2 before voting for UConn third on his ballot.

"I voted for who I thought was the best team in the country based on the entire body of work during the season," Adras told USA Today. "I believe it is Ohio State. I want to congratulate Connecticut for winning the NCAA tournament. They deserved it."

Although the coaches' votes are made public for every other poll, they are not made public for the final poll, according to policy set by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Butler, which reached its second straight NCAA final, was ranked No. 2 and led six teams that vaulted from unranked status into the final Top 25. Fellow mid-major Final Four participant Virginia Commonwealth, also unranked when the tournament began, finished No. 6.

Kentucky was ranked third, followed by Kansas and Ohio State. VCU, Duke, North Carolina, Arizona and Florida rounded out the top 10.

While Butler and VCU reached the top 10 following tournament success, a pair of high tournament seeds plunged after disappointing losses.

Pittsburgh, the regular-season Big East champion and a No. 1 seed, fell to No. 12 in the final poll from No. 4 after Butler eliminated the Panthers from the tournament in the third round. San Diego State, formerly No. 5, fell to No. 11 following its Sweet 16 loss to UConn.

St. John's, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Xavier and Georgetown fell out of the poll, while Florida State, Marquette and Richmond -- all of whom pulled off upsets in the tournament -- ascended into the final Top 25 of the season.

So two Florida players get arrested for breaking into a car at 2 am outside of a bar. Florida fans reaction?

I know I'm in the minority, but if the wallet was stolen and was in the car, then they had a moral right to break in to retrieve it. Theoretically, if that was the case, it could have been handled right there on the spot, and the penalty would have gone to the person trying to steal the wallet rather than the person trying to retrieve the stolen property. Never been a big fan of penalizing folks for retrieving something that was stolen from them. It's not like they went all OJ about it. Either way, it's just a possibility. Surprised so many are willing to slam them with that possibility looming.

Dumb as in an overestimate (doesn't count kids who transfer out of those schools who are at 100%) or an underestimate (schools get penalized for having kids transfer out)? These rates count a student who transferred in good academic standing and graduated at the new school as a graduate at the first school, which I think is fair. Different formula than the Federal Graduation Rate formula (this formula also counts JUCO kids who transfer into 4 year schools and graduate as graduates at that school and students who go back and returns and graduates more than 6 years after enrollment). Numbers are from a little while ago though, I guess to account for later graduates and things along those lines.

Giantsfan1080
04-19-2011, 12:30 PM
Well how is it fair? If anything it should count for both schools. Why should say Nova be penalized for recruiting a JUCO who then graduates from Villanova. Nova is the better school.

I guess what I was saying is this statistic essentially does count it for both schools. If a school recruits a JUCO who then graduates from their school, that counts as a graduate. If someone transfers from Rutgers to Miami, is in good standing when they transfer from Rutgers, and graduates from Miami I believe that counts as a graduate for both but it definitely counts as a graduate for Rutgers. More or less they don't penalize schools for little things like that, provided the school shouldn't be penalized (if a student transfers in bad academic standing or doesn't graduate at the new school, then I could see not counting them).

I guess the only thing that would be unfair is if a school brings in a non-JUCO transfer who then graduates, and the formula only counts the student as a graduate for the first college. Then again the student probably wouldn't be counted as a non-graduate at the second, and I'm not necessarily sure that the student wouldn't be counted as a graduate at the second school anyway. That was the thing that came across most unclear to me, but I'm sure they have a pretty good reason for however they do it. Seems like a decent formula to me.

I'm shocked considering he has a team coming back which has the talent to make a cindarella run next year, and for the Miami job? Eh I know it's the ACC but he should have waited a different year and looked for a better job. Crazy how the young hot shot Shaka smart stays with a poor roster next year and Larranaga the guy who built the Mason program would leave a roster that returns nearly all key players after having won the CAA this year, making the top 32, and going 27-7. While Miami obviously has more resources and more money to offer he was offered by Mason to be a top 5 paid mid major coach of a base salary of 250k a year plus incentives, I thought that would be enough to keep the guy who's been there for 15 years.

Back to obscurity in a few years for Larranaga. He had it great at Mason. Can we argue that Mason is a better program than Miami is now?

I am sure Miami has better facilities and could offer more cash, but its not like Miami is going to be going to the NCAA tournament or challenging for the ACC crown. He had that with Mason. Why throw that away? Im confused.

Yeah. If he's academically hard working to get out of high school early (or gifted), then he should be able to.

I just wonder how likely it is that someone with basketball skills actually puts that much time into high school classes. To be a good basketball player, he's going to have to practice a lot. I know people who were student athletes with 4.0 (out of 4.0) GPAs that were never offered an opportunity to advance a year. Granted, they were never talented enough to care.

It just seems questionable to me.

IOWA CITY, Iowa— Iowa's men's basketball team enjoyed the nation's highest home attendance increase among teams that failed to reach the NCAA tournament.

The Hawkeyes ranked fifth in the country with a boost of 2,085 fans per home game in 2010-11. That jump trails only BYU, San Diego State, Louisville and St. John's, all of whom made the NCAA tournament.

Iowa didn't have far to go, though. The Hawkeyes drew just 9,550 fans a game in 2009-10, by far their lowest average attendance since Carver-Hawkeye Arena opened in 1983.

Iowa ranked 31st in the nation in with 11,635 fans per game, despite finishing 11-20.

Go 11-20, have 5th highest per game attendence increase in the country and 31st overall per game attendence.

Lol Wut.

Seriously though, the per game increase is understandable because of how awful we were in 09-10 and no one wanted to watch that team. But the per game attendence overall? Teams 32+ should be ashamed...

That said, his recruiting has slacked terribly recently and I'm glad he retired and they didn't have to force him out (works out well for everyone).

UMD is a much better job than most people realize. Top 10 job in the country easily. Very attractive job, amazing talent right in the background, great facilities, great tradition and a big time conference.

Right now he's the Kwame Brown of college basketball, living off hype and "potential." He really lacks basketball skill. Hopefully the change of scenery will help him like Vernon Macklin.

Well it's a no lose situation for Rutgers regardless. He may not become a great player like everyone though but when we add him to the recruiting class we have coming in then he doesn't really need to be. If anyone can get something out of him it'll be Mike Rice as well. I believe he also had a back injury his FR year and he never got fully healthy so Martin relegated him to garbage minutes.

Shabazz is going to UCLA IMO. Think there's a better chance Coach K lands Jabari Parker.

Drummond to UConn is obviously huge for them, wonder how they're going to fit him in since I believe they're full in terms of scholarships. Wonder what kind of player he's going to be long-term, I'm guessing the type who never fulfills his immense potential.

Michael Bradley is going on financial aid to free a scholarship, making Drummond #10 for 2011. There was some thought that Enosch Wolf would go pro in Europe or something like that but the whole team is still intact.

That makes our starting lineup

PG: Napier
SG: Lamb
SF: Giffey/Daniels
PF: Oriakhi
C: Drummond

What's wrong with a student going on financial aid? He might qualify academically for a lot of merit awards, or his family just might be able to pay for his education straight up. How is that cheating?

Huh? Bradley is still on the team and will receive financial aid because of his living situation and background in Tennessee. I don't see the issue, and even if you have a problem with the morality of the matter it's obviously not cheating.

Yeah I hope it isn't too close haha but you are right. It will be a little weird for them but from what I know they get a 45 minute practice and an hour shootaround, thing is when the game starts, chances are the conditions change. If we are smart we will just take it down in the paint for easy buckets and get out in transition.

As far as Rutgers, I love the Wally Judge transfer and it sucks he won't be with you guys this year but he is a player who can average close to a double double with a block or 2 a game. Rutgers has always been a good location for basketball and I think is slightly on the rise.

Huge gets for both programs.

I'm really excited for this upcoming season for Villanova. There are a lot of pretty highly recruited players on the roster who have spent a lot of their careers playing behind guys who recently graduated. The guys on the current roster are more prototypical athletically and in terms of size and skill set than in past years. But only two players (starting center Mouphtaou Yarou and starting PG Maalik Wayns) played significant roles last year, so it will be interesting to see who steps up this year on the rest of the roster. Outside shooting is a huge question mark, but if it's better than expected this team could really surprise, as they're bigger and more athletic than they have been in previous years. It could be a really tough year also, but should be an interesting season. I love college hoops.

OSU's starting 5 looks legit but I can't help but be concerned about the depth on this squad.

It's always going to be a concern under Matta obviously since he usually ops to play his best 5-7 for the entire game; However, Ravenal (BC transfer to spell Sullinger) did appear to play quality minutes but that's just one game for a short amount of time, so we will see.

We're young as hell - 11 freshmen and sophomores, the concern about the depth is logical. I'm worried as usual about big 10 season. All the talent in the world but the experience of.. (insert analogy that I can't think of).

Also, you can see we don't have a go-to shooter this year. Losing Diebler is going to sting pretty badly throughout the duration of the season. Buford was forcing shots last night, Craft gets no respect for his outside shot and rightfully so. DeShaun Thomas is streaky as ****, and Sullinger needs to show he can hit that 15 footer with consistency throughout the season.

We will see. #3? Maybe. Need to see them play Duke for furtuer assessment.

I should have just said, "Yeah, I agree." Instead I blurt out all of this crap. Mahh bad.

keylime_5
11-16-2011, 11:37 AM
I'm more worried about getting a guy who can consistently knock down threes like we had in Diebs last year than I am about depth. We have nice depth this year, it just appears to be very young. And with that our youth itself is overrated a bit. Sullinger and Craft played basically every game last year with starter minutes and are sophomores. Buford is a wily veteran now. Thomas has a lot of experience. For a young team they have more experience than usual. If Thomas can hit threes consistently then this team can go far with all the skilled athletes they have. Good teams will be able to keep Sullinger from dominating down low like last year when we would have Buford, Lighty, and Diebler destroy the 3 point line.

That Duke game should be a fun one to watch. I'm going to see the team play when they come to Columbia next month to play the gamecocks.

Matta said he's already starting to feel better. They'll be evaluating him throughout the week. They said sitting him was very precautionary. That Texas-Pan Am game was pretty bad to watch. Even Craft was sleep walking. Was good to see the bench finally get some time.

I'd bet Sully is back for Kansas. And as far as him losing weight, he dropped like 20 something pounds in the offseason and it's noticeable.

Maybe its a bit of hoosier homerism and I know it sounds cliche, but college basketball is better when IU is a good competitive team. What a game, damn that place exploded when he hit that 3 in the end. And wow Zeller is impressive, and just a freshman at that.

God I love college BB.....

Soooo much better then the NBA for me, and its even close.

All my friends and I were standing for the last three minutes and then my living room exploded at :08.

I've been at IU for four years and in Bloomington for 15. After everything that happened to the program the past few years, this win felt better than any I can remember. I know we didn't get the ball to Zeller enough, but Hulls, Watford, Oladipo and Sheehey have gone through so much so I am happy they were the main men in the game.

People on campus talked about the game all week, and everyone knew we could win this game. The crowd played a big, big role in this game. The ability for fans to be a part of the win like that is one of the best parts of college basketball.

Beating any number one is amazing, but I love beating Calipari. IU is well on it's way back, that game was just the start.

College Basketball >>> NBA

Kansas shot very well. I think they hit like 60% or something and the Buckeyes were at around 40%. I didn't expect Ohio State to win @Kansas without Sullinger, not a big deal for us. It will look good on Kansas resume for the tournament, that is all.

Khem Birch Leaving Pittsburgh, Heading Back To Canada

Dec 16, 2011 - One of the highest rated recruits in Pittsburgh Panthers basketball history is leaving. Forward Khem Birch informed CBSSports.com today that he has decided to transfer.

"I'm leaving," Birch told CBSSports.com on Friday night. "I'm headed to Toronto now. I enjoyed my time at Pittsburgh, I love Coach (Jamie) Dixon, had no problems with the staff and the players. It just wasn't the right fit for me."

Birch was the highest rated player that the Pitt basketball program has ever landed, but while his loss stings it won't totally kill their team. Birch had started six games for the Panthers and many felt he was on the verge of breaking out. The Panthers have a good group of young players however, so they should be able to absorb the loss. Pitt also has a highly touted Australian commit Steven Adams on the way next season.

5* forward Jarnell Stokes commits to Tennessee. He's actually supposed to be a senior this year, but the TSSAA wouldn't allow him to play this year due to a transfer. He's actually already graduated high school though, so he'll enroll at UT in January and be eligible to play this season.

Would've loved for Buffalo to win at Temple after the smackdowns they've been laying on us in football, but they lost it at the death of overtime. Javon McCrea is starting to heat up. Right up on 30 points in the last few games. Conference play starts with a bang: Kent St. and Ohio in the first two. I can not wait.

Damn, so close to IU there. Coach Chambers is doing a hell of a job between beating Purdue by 20 on Thursday and then being down by 2 to Indiana with :21 left in the game (final was 88-82 IU).

This is a very young team too. One senior, Cam Woodyard, who played 7 minutes (2 points). Only three juniors, Billy Oliver (he's stepping up), Tim Frazier (excellent guard, will be a huge loss), and Nick Colella (walk on).

EDIT: Billy Oliver has missed 2 seasons due to medical hardship so he'll have sophomore eligibility right now if the eventual waiver goes through.

IU relies very heavily on the perimeter shooting (tops in the country at 3pt FG %).

Without it, they are a small, not very athletic team with mediocre bench.

Yesterday they were 4-18 from beyond the arc. I'm surprised they only lost by 3.

FG% doesn't mean reliance at all. They are great from three but they don't get an overwhelming amount of points from behind the arch.

They shot terribly against the Gophers and didn't get the ball to Zeller. The entry passes really need to improve. Could be a rough two game stretch after OSU.

Even with that the last foul they called with under 10 seconds left in a tie was so incredibly ridiculous. They called an off the ball foul where both guys were just trying to get position down low. I couldn't believe they called it.

HEY YOU LOST TO FSU TOO! :D

but not in the fashion we did... Roys worst loss but anyway..

Losing Strick is pretty big ummmmmm high energy player for the most part, really lenky for being like 6'1.. really a good leaper and one of our better defenders.

Huge blow to our title chances? Possibly.. strick usually was the backup PG and played a little 2 at times. Reggie Bullock is more fit to be a 2 and is an outside threat but sometimes Strick plays the PG position like Russell Westbrook in a sense of being out of control and having that shoot first mentality.

O yeah and we got Stillman White to play PG, we iggggggggght.

Tough time in Connecticut, but Manuel has done a very good job in Buffalo and has a strong record with academics, so it could be a good thing. Wish him the best.

Anyway, you should all check out Buffalo on ESPNU on Saturday! They've rolled off 8 straight wins and play an equally unimpressive mid-major also looking for NIT consideration.
