Notes from today’s Lions mini camp!

Notes from the first day of Lions 2007 mini camp
* The team not only is faster but also is clearly faster to the naked eye. I asked several of my colleagues who were there with me last season all through the year and they all said that they noticed the same thing.
* Kevin Jones was running well. He was not involved in the practice but he looked good running (about ½ speed) on his foot.
* Teddy Lehman looked like the Teddy we all fell in love with his rookie season. He had great reads, was fast and very fluid. The staff thinks he is back and I can certainly tell you that I saw nothing to contradict it.
* T.J. Duckett was a beast. He was fast and in 7 on 7 drills as well as 11 on 11 drills every time he had the rep, he ran it the entire 75 yards to the end zone. Most of the backs stopped after 10 or 15. If he was trying to send a message he did that. Sarge said after practice “he is a big, fast strong man and I can’t wait to see him in pads.”
* Calvin Johnson shined last week at rookie mini-camp so I expected when the vets joined him today that he would look good. He didn’t. He looked great. His speed was still clearly head and shoulders above everyone else and he clearly will be a star.
* Mike Furrey didn’t line up in the slot as expected. He stayed outside. This staff sees him moving inside but CJ has to earn it all. They won’t give him anything.
* There was 100% attendance today. Somebody emailed me yesterday that they thought that would happen and included Redding in on it. I love the wishful thinking but he can’t be there until his contract is signed. I don’t see anything with him happening until camp.
* I saw a couple of people that stood out that haven’t been on the radar, but I want to see another day (Wednesday) before I talk about them. If they continue like they did today, there will be some more position fights then we thought.
* IAF still can’t do all the team drills, but fit in nicely and clearly in what he could do, looked very sharp.
* Johnny Baldwin did not look as good as Lehman or Paris but he has the tools and skills. He made a classic rookie mistake by giving guys too much cushion but that is because coming from a small school, the speed factor today was way up.
* Mike Martz continues to make over Drew Stanton’s mechanics but that is not a big deal. Drew got a lot of reps with the two’s today and although it is still way to early to read anything into it, it at least was intriguing.
* Damien Woody got some reps at the left guard, but Mulitalo was held out of those drills. I still feel that he is a long shot to make this team. He may, but a lot has to happen. On and off the field. The odds are way out there against him being a Lion in 2007.
* Jon Scott looked mobile and coming off his season ending injury last season was very fluid and mobile. He has to get stronger, but he will make this team.
* Roy got an injury late in the practice. It certainly was minor at the worst but he really was putting on a show with his hands prior to it.
* Daniel Bullocks had a great interception. In fact it was on the play that Roy got hurt. He stepped right in front of Roy and made a great grab. He has really matured over the off-season. He was noticeably bigger and more confident in his reads. Last season he tried too hard. I hope you understand what I am trying to say. He let his instincts take over today and that was what made his performance so good and why the Lions took him last season with a second round pick.
* Ernie Sims or as one of you emailed me and called him: Simzilla looked just like the nickname. This is mini camp so it was non-contact but he would “tap” some folks to let them know he was prowling.
* Mike Furrey made a statement. I didn’t see him drop a ball and he looked like he was ready to start the season. He made A.J. Davis look silly once and I didn’t see any smack talk (who is notorious for it) from Davis afterwards. Welcome to the NFL…rook!
* Shaun McDonald will get the nod at returning punts so now the only thought is who will return kicks. As you know Eddie Drummond is my buddy but it would appear that his days as a Lion are marked. Unless he performs at a level that I don’t know if he can, I don’t think he will be a Lion to start the season. That is the part of my job I hate. He is my buddy but the facts are the facts.
* CJ finally dropped some passes. I saw him on two occasions drop balls that the quality of DB’s in the NFL will not let him get. There skills confused him and caused them to be dropped. He will adjust but you could tell he was frustrated.
* Shaun Rogers was here and didn’t practice but he did stretch. He just doesn’t appear to take anything serious. He needs to get serious fast or Sarge’s faith in him is going to test his teammates. I won’t say a lot about that now, that is for later, much later, and I hope I never have to get specific about it.
