By arm strength do you mean distance or "zip" on the ball. It is more important to throw it harder than farther. Tom Brady throws the hardest ball in the league.

He's top 15, but I'm not sure he's top 10. I'd say he's about on par with JP Losman, who I had at #10, and there were more than a few people who could have claimed that spot.

The Almighty Lord Favre is known to have the mightiest, strongest, upper body limb in all of North America, perhaps the universe. Even greater than Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson. May no other peon Quarterback reach his strength. Lord Favre's arm is so strong that during his favorite pastime: hunting, he once killed a deer without a gun or arrow, but rather an NFL licensed football.

kyle orton's got a stronger gun than grossman.
seriously.

in reality. either you put serious power on the ball. or you don't, when it gets to a certain point, it doesn't really matter who has a stronger arm.

it's like, who would you rather have, a pitcher with a fastball in the high 90's or a pitcher with a slider in the mid 90's? strong arm should be rated... good, excellent, or poor.

poor would be... kitna, pennington, hasselbeck, delhomme
good would be... grossman, bulger, carr, losman
excellent would be... farve, vick, cutler, russel (et al.)

ranking arm strength is rather shifty.

If we're doing that, then we need to seperate the throwers from the passers.

Either way, best deep ball accuracy goes to Carson Palmer hands down. The kid throws the best deep ball I've ever seen.

Well Russell will soon be in the mix near the top. JR has a cannon.

If we're talking most accurate deep ball, Russell still oscillates between being a thrower and a passer. Sometime his deep throws are just him launching the ball as far as he can in the general direction of a teammate. He has shown signs of improvement though, and he has as much potential in the area as anyone has ever had.

Ironic, "Lord Favre's" 3rd season he had 1 more INT than Ben, his superbowl years he had identical INT #'s, oh and don't forget the 05 "29 INT" Season.

This is Rex Grossman we're talking about here. We're talking 210 lbs. of twisted steel and sex appeal. I'm not just a gunslinger. I'm a cumslinger. Throwing that ball long tells all the Rexettes that I am ****ing out there. On the edge. Where I gotta be. The ladies love the danger. The unpredictability. Oh, maybe I'll tease them with a pretty touch pass every now and again. But then I'm gonna go right back to pumping that ball out for all it's worth. It tells them I throw like I ****. That's how we do things in the sexy business.

Tell me you're not turned on right now. I am.

Hahaha that was awesome. I'm a big fan of Rex but that's funny **** right there.

Leinart's arm ain't great, Rivers' arm ain't great either. Neither would be int he pros if they weren't so awesome at other stuff. I think the distance separating my 21st and 30th guys isn't that big, kinda a toss up.

Vince Young is too high. I think he's bottom half of the league. Same for Alex Smith. Quinn should be below 20.

Rivers is a little low. He had a stronger arm coming out of school than Schuab. It's certainly an awkward motion but he can get it down the field. Hasselbeck should be higher as should McNabb.

Pretty good list though.

Vince has a rocket. He throws a prettier ball than most seasoned vets. Smith has a pretty good gun too. Quinn's arm is really good, almost as good as Palmer's, his deep ball accuracy has nothing to do with how strong his arm is. Rivers doesn't have a great arm, that's not why he's good.

Smith has a pretty good gun too.

heres scotts report on him:

"Here was my scouting report on him coming out:

Strengths: Extremely smart player...Has good height...A leader and field general...Accurate passer with excellent timing...Good speed and very good mobility...Top intangibles and a winner...Very efficient with a tremendous TD/INT ratio...Still getting better and has a lot of upside.

Weaknesses: Has enough arm strength, but not a gun...Stats are inflated because he plays in such a wide open offensive scheme...Plays out of the shotgun a lot...Some are concerned he is just a system quarterback...Could stand to add some weight and bulk up.

Notes: Entered college as a junior academically because he took so many advanced placement courses in high school, earned a bachelors degree as a 20-year-old sophomore and was working on his masters as a junior...Michigan St. coach John L. Smith is his uncle...Played with USC running back Reggie Bush in high school...Chose to head to the pros since coach Urban Meyer moved on to Florida and should be one of the top signal callers available."

what QB's game was deep balls besides Culpepper with Moss? Our offense just never had a real deep threat that we can just throw it real deep. We might see this year with Moss and Stallworth but i've seen Brady make 55-60 yard passes with accuracy.

I live in South Carolina. Most every starting QB in the NFL has a strong arm save a few finesse passers ala Brees and Pennington. But Delhomme is not in the class of McNabb and Campbell and Grossman, etc.

BLACKnGOLD

I don't think you can rank them 1-32, but you can put them in tiers, no order in the specific tiers. This includes borderline starters/prominent back ups too. I think this is a pretty accurate way of "ranking" players arm strength.

Tier 1- freak- an arm like this comes out the draft maybe three times a decade

Russell
Vick

Tier 2- very strong arm- usually one or two of these will go in the first round of the draft, have some of the strongest arms in the league but the NFL has seen them before, unlike the Vicks and Russels.

Culpepper
Roethlisberger
Palmer
Cutler
Leftwich
McNabb
Grossman
Carr
D. Anderson
Losman

Tier 3- Strong Arm- Have no problem making all the throws, arm strength is viewed as a positive, but they don't have the elite arms of teir 2. Majority of NFL QBs who stick around.

P Manning
E Manning
Jackson
Favre (used to be in tier 2 but is aging)
Campbell
Brady
Quinn
Simms
Romo
Delhomme
McCown
Rodgers
McNair
Edwards
Kolb
T. Smith
Croyle
Harrington
Garrard
Gray
Walters
Brooks

Tier 4- Solid, Good Enough- have arms that are just good enough. Make up for a lack of a cannon through excellent accuracy or great mobility.

Bulger
Young
Smith
Rivers
Green
Kitna
Brees
Schaub
Beck
Huard
Ferotte
Nall
Rosenfels
Wallace

Tier 5-Average at best or slightly below- Arm strength is a concern, and they are better at touch, fades then all out stretching the field throwng bombs because they have limited range. Can still drill short passes, but cant throw deep outs on a rope. Must have exceptional anticipation and accuracy to succeed.

Hasslebeck
Pennington
Leinart
Dorsey
Garcia
Holcomb
Rattay

Auron

I agree with BlacknGold's tier rankings for the most part.

I do think Brees has a better arm than people give him credit for. It's in the lower half pure strength wise, but I don't think he has the second weakest arm of all starting QBs either.

He was spot on with his deep passes last season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TcQqsXTujg

keylime_5

Brees should be in the bottom tier. He is good, but the only starting QBs with weaker throwing arms than him are probably Pennington and maybe Leinart, Frye, etc, all those guys I listed off the top-o-my head

You should throw Charlie Frye into that bottom tier mix and Drew Stanton should be in that 2nd tier. Good post though. I agree that you can't really rank the QBs 1-32 unless you're like a scout or someone with no life

Um, I going to disagree with every here. I'm to lazy to dig up anything on VY's scouting report but he does not have a gun. He may throw a pretty deep ball but that is a lot different that a pure gun. I don't think he's much different that Rivers in terms of pure arm strength.

Quinns arm is solid, hardly great though and I don't think anywhere near Palmers. He floated a lot of deep balls at ND. Check his scouting reports to - never was labeled a guy with a "great arm."

You've already been shown some stuff on Alex Smith. I put him in the Rivers/Young category of having a nice deep ball but not really great arm strength.

Delhomme does have a pretty solid arm. He may not be the most accurate but he can chuck it down the field.

Pit Bull #53

McNair's arm is shot. He probably can still fling it every once in a while if he needs to, but I have doubts that he can do it consistently anymore. He used to have a gun though.

keylime_5

Young can throw some frozen ropes, he's got a great arm, just has a weird throwing motion. I've never seen a tighter spiral than on his ball either.

But to all the nitpickers, the only guys who are considered to have really great arms that feed off of arm strenght are Russell, Culpepper, Losman, Favre, Grossman, etc. (someone listed them earlier). See the point about the tiers too.

kmartin575
05-25-2007, 10:16 PM
Not to be too much of a homer but Brodie Croyle is probably in the top 15. He had the 2nd strongest arm in last years draft after Jay Cutler. Despite his small stature Croyle has a cannon for an arm and can make any throw within 65 or 70 yards.

This is probably another reason why Brees going to NO was the best thing for him, SD, and NO. In SD, he was never asked to throw that deep consistently and thus it affected his deep balls when he did throw it. In other words, the system in NO is better for Brees than it was in SD. He finally gets to show what he can do instead of being in LT's shadow. Of course, he still needs to work on some more consistency. Looking at those vids, there were several throws where the receiver had to slow down to catch, which is a big no no when it comes to throwing it deep. But that's just me being picky.
